Great introductory book

This is a great introductory book to learn the basic movements of Xingyi and Bagua.

The book is divided into two parts, the first half teaches a little bit about the history of Xingyi, the basic principles of the stance (San ti shi) and the style, things to keep in mind during training, and it then goes into the forms in great detail. The second half gives the same treatment for Bagua.

The book contains clear pictures accompanied by detailed descriptions on how to do the forms: Xingyi's Wu hsing (5 elements fist) and 12 animals, as well as Bagua's 8 changes.

The book, however, lacks a section about application, and does not go into great detail about internal training and other concepts such as Nei kung or training the Yi (intent).

Still, the book's aim is to teach the forms, and with the detail given to how to do them and the basic principles, I can say that the book is excellent as a beginner's guide.

With this book teaching you the forms, I can recommend Martial Mechanics: Maximum Results with Minimum Effort in the Practice of the Martial Arts to teach you what it means to fight using an internal style, and Combat Techniques of Taiji, Xingyi, and Bagua: Principles and Practices of Internal Martial Arts to teach you more on how to train.

Excellent Volume

This book is an excellent, in-depth examination of the Chen Pan Ling method of Hsing-I Chuan and the Wang Shu Jin method of Bagua Zhang. Very clear step-by-step photos and written instructions together with valuable information regarding the deeper aspects of both of these excellent Chinese internal martial arts.

Easy way to learn Korean verbs.

I already took Korean classes prior to this, but since Korean is so focused on verbs, I knew I needed a book like this. I've been working through this book slowly trying to memorize all 500 verbs to up my Korean skills.

That given, this book is very good for either the basic or advanced learner, though it's missing some of the more common verbs I'm used to hearing.

Pros: It provides the romanization (though not quite an explaination for how the sounds go since there are several romanizations of Korean, so it's worth knowing the hangeul). It provides several conjugations and tenses of the verbs. Then it also provides a few example sentences and notes about how it's applied.

The indexes are also very thorough and handled well.

Cons: For those that love Korean historical dramas and were really hoping to learn verbs that are part of the upper levels of speech and upper levels of verb endings, this book does not cover those verbs. While there are some deferential verbs (the few that are there are dutifully noted at least), the majority of those are absent. So there isn't much hope you'd be able to address a King. (I was secretly hoping to ace some of those verbs too.)

Despite that, the average user won't need the upper levels of speech, so it's understandable that they are absent, however, a basic explanation about this choice for the laymen not used to Korean might help to understand the intentions of the book. (Also something about formal, informal, dictionary form and deferential (lower end) usage culturally.)

But if you're like me and slacked on learning vocabulary, then learning verbs will help you a lot in communicating in Korean. So this will be a helpful book for you to have.

Good, but--

This book is really great. It's in alphabetical order, has a good index, and the conjugation demonstrations are very helpful. Overall, I definitely recommend this book for the intermediate user.

However, I do have a bone to pick with this book. As an intermediate learner I understand that not everyone can read hangul. But if you can't read hangul then you really shouldn't be jumping straight to a verb book. I really needed a detailed essential verb book, and this is certainly that, but the romanization is, in my opinion, clumsy, distracting, and pointless for such a straightforward writing system. The book provides synonyms and antonyms for each verb but only provides a romanization instead of translating it for you, which is a shame. Although I would still recommend this book to others, I'll keep looking for other verb books.

About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist for decades, and is considered a leading authority and master of the art. An avid teacher, LaFosse co-founded the Origamido Studio, a learning center and design studio dedicated to the art of origami, and the only place in the world specializing in hand papermaking for the origami artist. LaFosse co-curated Origami Now!, a wildly popular, year-long exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. He was also prominently featured in the recent, Peabody Award-winning film, Between the Folds, by Vanessa Gould.

Great designs, nice format, excellent price for value

I purchased this kit for the book, and was happily surprised by the quality of the paper included -- all two-colored, with solids and patterns, and larger than the 6" "standard" origami paper. Nice!

The real reason to purchase this kit is THE BOOK. This is best for those who are not exactly "beginner" origami folders, but "beginner-intermediate" -- they know they like folding, aren't ready yet for the really complex stuff, and have grown tired of the same-old traditional folds. This book has, in compact but clearly-diagrammed format, Michael G. LaFosse's bird, animal, and fish folds which I'd only previously found in his kids' Step By Step series (and good luck finding those outside a library). The presentation is straightforward to appeal to adults while being appealing, colorful, and friendly. Many of the designs -are- the author's unique creations, and one should not let their apparent simplicity mislead one into thinking them uninteresting. This is not meant to be sculpture-type origami, but the simpler sort which evokes the creature represented rather than perfectly replicating it with a paper model. The charm of origami animals is here in full!

I bought this kit for myself, but it would make an excellent gift for an adult or child who likes origami or likes animals and crafts. The book, with the paper, makes an excellent value, and the box presentation is bright and festive.

Too complicated for me...the animals don't really look like they should in my opinion; however, have not done origami so maybe I should have started with something marked "easy"!

I bought this book so I can share the Malaysian folklore I grew up with, with my own children, who are half-American. I'm grateful to the author for compiling these stories in English they can be passed on from people like me to their own children, who hopefully, will appreciate this part of their cultural heritage. Two of these stories (The Princess of Mount Ledang and The Youngest Princess) were also told frequently through plays and theatrical performances in Malaysia. This book is a wonderful collection of stories for children from all backgrounds.

Not for the beginner -incomplete and misleading

This book is certainly not a complete guide. If you buy just one book on oriental rugs this should not be the one. It is overly simplistic in some area and overly detailed in others.

It is neither a good book on new rugs nor of antique rugs as it is quite outdated. Still if you have a collection of rug books already and know the subject well some nuggets of information can be gleaned from this book.

About the Author
William McNaughton was the founding teacher of Chinese at Oberlin College. From 1986 he taught at Kong Kong's City University, where he was the founding program leader of the BA (Honors) program in Translation and Interpretation. He now lives in retirement in Hong Kong.

A good list of characters, not a good standalone resource

I started learning to write Chinese by working my way through this book, memorizing the characters, pronunciation, and definitions. Now I sort of regret it. The list of characters is reasonable enough. If your goal is to memorize a bunch of characters, these are good ones to concentrate on, and they're generally presented in a reasonable order. The stroke order diagrams are helpful when you're first starting out, and it isn't a problem that they're only present for the first half of the list of characters; by the time you finish the part of the book with the diagrams, you will have long since developed a good intuitive sense of the stroke order rules.

Unfortunately, beyond the selection of characters and the diagrams, it kind of falls short.

My biggest complaint is that the definitions are often not good. When a character has multiple meanings (as most of them do) you can't count on the most common meaning being first in the list, and in some cases common meanings aren't listed at all. If you're using the definitions to make flashcards, you'll be frustrated by the number of times two characters are given exactly the same English definition, even though in reality they differ in connotation or in usage.

There is never any distinction made between characters that stand as words on their own and characters that only ever appear as parts of compound words, which will definitely trip you up a lot if you're using this as a source of vocabulary. And the compound words are sometimes obscure or very old-fashioned terms that, if you say them to a Chinese speaker, will cause them to give you a puzzled look and ask where the heck you learned THAT old word.

The font used for the characters is a typewritten one. If you learn to write the characters as printed in this book, you will end up writing in a very precise but somewhat mechanical-looking style rather than a more artistic handwritten style. Whether that's a plus or a minus is up to your sense of aesthetics. The traditional character edition of this book uses a handwritten font; even though I'm primarily learning simplified characters, if I had it to do over again I'd have picked up that edition instead. (Both editions actually contain both character forms; the difference is mostly the font and the order of the entries.)

If you get this book, use it as a list of characters to learn and a large collection of stroke order diagrams. Keep a real dictionary handy and it'll be a worthwhile learning resource.

a friendly way to learn characters

Learning Chinese characters is incredibly cumbersome. I look at some and wonder how anyone can remember all those lines and dashes! This book gives the character, shows how to draw it, defines it, and demonstrates how it is used in words (or in other characters). A helpful secret to learning characters is to see how they fit together. Often, a character is a compilation of more than one character. It is fun seeing how these compilations work; for example, the word "good" is a combination of the characters for "woman" and "child." Characters, themselves, can tell stories. Seeing the story makes learning and remembering them easier.

Perfect for novices

SO useful. I've started learning Mandarin and this has been an excellent reference; my tutor also flipped through it and pronounced it a good purchase. Especially helpful: it includes diagrams with the order of operations for strokes used in each character, and since I want to know how to properly write rather than just "drawing" characters, that's been great. You may or may not need something more extensive if you're already solid in writing skills, I have no idea; but if you're just starting out, it's perfect.
