Review
"I have personally observed Hakim Isler teach his system to my soldiers operating in the toughest parts of Ramadi, Iraq. The confidence with which these soldiers were able to operate on the forward edge of the battlefield always paid dividends." —Michael Layrisson, LTC, USA
"I believe in Hakim Isler, and I believe in the system he has built based on our training together in Ohio and his life-saving experiences in the sands of the mideast. Enjoy Hakim's book. Learn and grow." —Stephen K. Hayes, from the Foreword

Good Overview of Isler's BPC system, and a good addtion to a SD resource library
By Alain B. Burrese
"Modern Hand To Hand Combat" by Hakim Isler is a book about the military combative system Isler developed, which he calls "The Effective Battlefield Proximity Combat Training System." For short you can call it BPC for Battlefield Proximity Combat. Isler relates it to ancient samurai techniques that were used on the battlefield, thus the pictures of combatants dressed as Samurai and combatants with modern military uniforms being compared. I say the book is "about" the system, because it really does focus more on the theory behind the system, and why he teaches certain things, more than teaching the actual system. Yes, there are some techniques from the system taught both in the book with descriptions and photographs, and then more in detail on the accompanying DVD, but these are few and by no means make an entire system.
In fact, at the beginning of Chapter 10 Technique Set One, the author states, "The purpose of this chapter is to give the reader an abbreviated view of the BPC Beginner Technique Set 1. Not all the techniques in this set are shown, because I didn't want the reader to look at the techniques and feel as though they could use these techniques in the real world without proper instruction." He continues with, "Furthermore, because this system was designed primarily for the American military combatant, it is important that the full dynamics of the techniques (as well as the curriculum) not be divulged in an open source fashion." This is why I say this book and accompanying DVD teach about the system, rather than teach the system itself.
With that said, I still believe there is much value in this book and DVD. The concepts the author describes that went into the development of his system are important, and all those learning or teaching self-defense should be analyzing these same things, and the insights that Isler presents in this book and DVD are good, and worth considering, regardless of the style you practice.
The book begins with two short forward by Stephen K. Hayes, one of Isler's instructors, and LTC Michael Layrisson of the U.S. Army. Chapter 1 contains a few pages on the journey to creation of the system, giving some of Isler's motives for creating BPC. The second chapter, Lessons From the Past, compares ancient samurai to modern combatants. I thought it was an interesting comparison. Chapter 3, BPC Philosophy, describes what the system is in about two pages. The fourth chapter, focuses of BPC Training describes things such as escalation of force, degradation of proximities and capabilities, operational creation based on operational realism, and continued evolution.
Chapter 5, The Basics, covers things such as basic stance, balance, stability, efficient motion, and non-commitment. It also looks at some basic defenses, weaponry, and angles and levels. All of these are good things to consider for any martial art or combative program, and this chapter provides some of the basics. Chapter six provides some basic information on understanding distance. Next comes, Chapter 7, Winning Concepts. Good chapter on thinking about combat. Chapter 8, Exhaustive Measures, covers training to exhaustion and the philosophy behind it. Chapter 9 addresses the authors views of ground fighting for soldiers. He makes some good points.
As I mentioned earlier, Chapter 10 moves into some basic techniques. The photographs in this section are all in pairs, showing samurai dressed combatants and modern combatants doing similar techniques. There are 6 techniques on edged weapon versus edged weapon, 6 techniques of pistol versus edged weapon (hitting with pistol, not shooting it), and 3 techniques for combat grappling. There are then 2 bonus techniques from a future volume 2. These are a take down and a control technique. The book then concludes with a brief conclusion. The techniques are simple and basic, just as Isler says they will be. Like I said earlier, the book is more about the system than teaching the entire system.
The DVD that comes with the book has video instruction on the techniques that are shown in the pictures, and this allows the reader/viewer to understand and learn these much easier than just with the book by itself.
Besides the techniques shown on the DVD, there are segments where Isler is describing his system to a group of military personnel who are asking him questions about the system. Again, this is telling about the system. The DVD is about 76 minutes long and is very well produced wish some scenes of military training, which ads to the "cool" factor, but the actual instruction is just on the same techniques listed above.
I like the book, and I like Isler. I think it is good to know what is behind a system to better understand the system. I believe a lot of the points made about this system are accurate and very important for military combatives, and these do have relevance to other martial arts and self-defense programs. For this reason, I think it is a good read and view, and a good addition to anyone self-defense resources.

Highly recommend for today's warrior!
By Mike Hoffman
Spent the weekend reading Mr. Hakim Isler's new book, Modern Hand to Hand Combat. As an Iraq veteran who led patrols in Fallujah in 2003, I understand the reality of applying modern combatives when you are wearing 60+ pounds of gear. Mr. Isler conveys the actuality of the scenarios our military faces on today's battlefield; the transition from zero to full on action that can occur in a split second and the fact that this will happen while a service member is tired and carrying a full "battle rattle."
Mr. Isler does a great job of showing the similarities between the warriors of old (the Samurai during the Sengoku period in 16th century Japan) and today's modern combatant on the fields of Iraq and Afghanistan. It truly lends itself to the adage of `what is old is new again.' He offers a no-nonsense approach to the fact that a confrontation should be handled and then the mission continued. This is something that is lacking in today's MMA `arena based' confrontations. In actuality, the mission may continue for minutes, hours, even days after an encounter and BPC (Battlefield Proximity Combat) addresses this in detail.
The book is well written and has detailed pictures and easy to understand text. The accompanying DVD is a great supplement and an added bonus at the price. I would highly recommend this to the service member, law enforcement, security or anyone involved in deployment operations. Great addition to your library!

Insightful & Realistic
By B. Visher
A lot of guys buy these books hoping for the ultimate fighting style but such a style doesn't exist. It makes no sense for a fully armored fully armed soldier to engage the enemy employing Gracie Jujitsu. GJ was designed for in ring combat, I mention this mainly because the common criticism I see of Mr.Isler and other authors is that they don't emphasize enough empty hand scenarios, this is as real as it gets for combat. Gracie/ Brazilian jujitsu is a very specialized skill that is only useful in a ring environment, it has no value outside the ring, Mr. Isler has shown things from a soldiers perspective who is well armed enough to not have to employ excessive ground fighting trying to emulate their favorite UFC fighter in the middle of a WarZone, guns and knives are jujistu's Kryptonite it only makes sense that they would emphasize weaponry in warfare. There are too many delusional fools out there who are not qualified to critique this book. Hakim Isler is a warrior and a Man's Man and deserves respect for his contributions to the skill sets of our armed forces.
