Definitive work in English

Heinrich Engel, the author of this book, studied architecture in Germany immediately after World War II, when he left in 1952 to travel the world in search of inspiration. After a year of wandering the East, he reached Japan and stayed for three years. This book is the result of that stay.
Overall, the work is difficult to over-praise. It lays out in solid detail how a Japanese house is constructed, starting with the measurements, and how they are based off of average human proportions, and proceeding through floor plans, how to construct a foundation, how the framing is laid out and the joinery selected. You see here, more clearly than in perhaps any other work, why the complicated joints depicted in Japanese Joinery: A Handbook for Joiners and Carpenters and other places were necessary. He goes on to demonstrate how the walls were assembled out of shoji, and gives numerous plans and variations of these screens.
A sizable portion of the book is devoted to exploring how the Japanese people, with their culture, relate to one another and the world around them, and how that is borne out in their architecture. I found this section especially fascinating, as the best architecture grows organically from the needs and wants of the people using it, and this is the most extensive treatment of the subject I've seen. It is probably most useful for those interested in Japanese culture for its own sake, or for architecture students seeking to better understand this relationship in order to deal with clients.
If you are interested in a quick overview of Japanese architecture without thorough-going authenticity, this may be too much for your purposes. Try the abridged volume Measure and Construction of the Japanese House instead. But if you are interested in the details, in authentic reconstruction, or clear plans for everything from flooring to framing to roofing to shoji, doors, and layout, and more importantly, in how those specifics naturally arise from the culture and needs of the Japanese people, get the original.

required reading

This is the definitive text (in english) on the subject of simple single-residence Japanese construction into the early post WW2 era. Mr. Engels treats the subject with clarity and reverence. I have been reading books on this subject for years and have yet to find its equal.
This edition is a far cry from the much abridged paper bound edition first issued in the 1980's and is far more comprehensive. As costly as it is, like the chisel you buy that seems so expensive at the time, as the years go by the superior value of that better tool displays itself more clearly with every use. Buy this one. You won't regret it.
One flaw exists; all copies I have seen have cracked their binding somewhere between the 50th and 120th pages. Otherwise a perfect book for the carpenter, woodworker or architect.

The ultimate guide to Japanese architecture

After finding this book in the closed stack of my school I knew that this book was a must have. The drawings are very detailed in addition with the multiple diagrams this book presents the idea of Japanese architecture in a clear way. Though if you are looking for a simple read this might be a little more than what you were looking for. The book is written clearly but is very technical and detailed in writing. Overall an amazing book that I'm so glad I spent the money on! Definitely worth the price!
