Lao Basics comes after living in Laos for nearly two years, working for the Vientiane International School, the US embassy, the Lao-American College and the Mekong Fisheries. I loved living in Laos, but I found at the time that there were no good Lao learning books. While visiting Thailand one time, though, I came upon Easy Thai, by Gordon Allision. It really helped me pick up Thai in an efficient manner and used practical vocabulary. After that, I started working on Lao Basics, which was always in my mind: Easy Lao.
My co-author, Tee, was a tremendous help. It took much longer than it should have for me to finish this book, because sometimes, to be honest, it's very easy to pass the days in Laos by doing not a whole lot. Tee pushed me to finish it though, and I am very happy with the result.
Lao Basics is a very thin book with a lot of punch. There is a CD that has all of the Lao spoken by a native speaker to help you with pronunciation; and the format, like Easy Thai is super easy, dare I say, fun, to use. The first chapter for example, teaches the first 4 consonants. You have to practice writing them, and memorizing the sounds, but after you do it, you'll know them backwards and forwards with our practice pages. Then you move on to the next set. Before you know it, you have learned all of the 26 consonants and are moving on the the vowels, the most unique part of the language. With each vowel set, you learn new and useful words that you can use right away. And you'll be translating sentences from Lao to English and vice-versa starting with this first vowel set.
I hope you enjoy learning Lao as much as I have. Once you start, you'll be able to use a Lao dictionary, and a Thai one for that matter. So much of the languages are similar, that you'll find you can get by in both countries with one language, and then you'll learn the other that much easier.
Lao is by far much easier than Thai, and a great place to start.

Good, but not solo.
By ksiezycowy
The sad fact is that there are few Lao textbooks out there. This one isn't too bad, there are just a few nagging issues I have.
They use romanization throughout the book, but they don't represent the tones in romanization. This isn't a huge deal, as you should be able to figure it out from the Lao script. But this seems odd to me. As you're trying to help people learn the Lao script and you use romanization to this end, you should represent all the sounds (including tones). Lao tones aren't very difficult to figure out most of the time, but I still think it would have helped.
Ok, I'm done with the tone thing now!
Other then that, the book is great for teaching the alphabet (which is it's main focus).
I just wished the book was a bit longer and have some dialogues and/or reading passages.
The audio that comes with the book is good. And Overall it's a good book to add to other Lao textbooks. I wouldn't use this text alone and expect to get too far.

Exactly what I was looking for
By Peggy B.
I was looking for a basic Lao book that focused on the writing (alphabet, vowels, vocabulary, pronunciation, and etc), and this was exactly what it was. I hope in the future that the authors consider making a Lao writing exercise book that's readily available in the US since there's no sufficient writing exercises online or locally; I usually had to get the exercise books from Laos.
Word of caution though, it is a basic, introductory book. If you want a through language-learning experience, I suggest getting a few books instead of one.

Perfect with the locals
By J. Conner
This past summer I brought this book to Laos with me during a service trip. It was awesome to look it over before the trip and learn some phrases. And when I finally got there, my first morning in Laos was spent conversing with a Lao waiter as he taught myself and my friends different pronunciations and words. It was a great way to break the ice with the locals; I definitely recommend it.
