For those interested in learning about Chinese furniture, this is a very useful book. It is well written and illustrated and gives a good over-all survey of the field. It isn't written for experts, but for the "lay" person who wants to know something about the field either for personal interest or because he/she is beginning to collect.

Get The Real Message

This is a good book in that a reader can get a clearer idea of who Bruce Lee was. One reviewer was quite rude and unfair to Bruce Lee, took offense to the man as though he had written the book. Bruce Lee's writings were made into a book, Bruce Lee did not write nor construct the book. So appreciating that fact, it's fair to say that a reader gets a pretty good idea as to what type of prerson Bruce Lee was. Bruce Lee did study philosphy and he shared a lot of what he learned from others as well as his own personal views and opinions. Any true Bruce Lee fan knows Bruce never presented himself as "the one who knew everything" he tried to inspire and/or guide people to be themselves, find the true meaning of themselves an not be fixed, labeled, a copy, tied to any set thing or boxed into something with no way for self expression. And not just to be applied to the Martial Arts but in life as well. I think the insulting reader was confused by the deeper meaning of Bruce's writings and what he preceived to be "Bruce the great philosopher". The reader didn't get the real message, that if there is value in any book, as there is with this book (better insight and inspiration)then it should be recommended. Bruce Lee's writings should be appreciated for the content of what was originally from Bruce, his writings in this book should be looked upon to help people gain a better understanding of the thoughts and principles that guided him-Bruce Lee. If some people are inspired to follow his principles or those of whom he learned from, I think that's the point. If a reader has already made up in his or her mind that Bruce Lee's writings are not "real philosophy" or at least based on "real philosophy" then don't buy the book. In my opinion, this book would still be a good book no matter whose writings they were.

The pre-JKD Bruce

This book described his study of Kung Fu before it melted down into JKD. From a historical perspective, this is a very valuable book, because one can trace the root and development of JKD from traditional Kung Fu. I am especially surprised to see the section on set/form practice, which he abandoned completely later on. Bruce had a deep understanding of Kung Fu at a young age and he was way ahead of his time. I am glad that all of this information was preserved and made available to the public.

Great book

I just wanted to say that I think this is a great book and a must buy for both Ken Shamrock and mixed martial arts fans. Please do not believe the hype from some of the other reviews stating that the book is unduly biased. That simply is not true. Mr. Shamrock openly reveals his mistakes in his losses and does not ridicule or down grade any opponent, ie: he speaks well of the Gracies, explains what caused the personal frictions between him and Dan Severn. Many times people confuse confidence with cockiness, as the great Muhammad Ali used to say, "It ain't braggin if you can do it!" Being the first King of Pancrase, and the first Superfight Champion, Ken Shamrock was the best mixed martial artist in the world; he has definitely proven that he can do what he says. Yes Ken Shamrock is confident, but he is not arrogant. Many interesting insights you'll learn about his personal life, the politics of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, his fighting style, and the Lion's Den. Buy it if you're a fan of Ken Shamrock!

This is a great book. It is a great and informative book, while not being boring. Anyone who reads this book can easily appreciate what he has gone through to get where he is, and it is encouraging to people who will also need to go through alot to get to somewhere better.

Wonderful Insight Into The Man Personally & Professionally

This book will not only intrigue fans of all types of fighting styles that Ken Shamrock has competed in, it will also serve as a source of motivation and inspiration for all.

The book is creatively and effectively divided into two parts. The first half is ghost written, or at least co-authored, and chronicles Ken's life. It is a brief, yet very thorough and captivating life story.

The second half is a nuts and bolts introduction to all aspects of competing in mixed martial arts - from eating to strength training to technique.

"Inside The Lion's Den" is more than just a book about a tough guy who won some fighting contests and became a pro wrestler. "Inside The Lion's Den" delves deep into the trials and tribulations that chronicle Ken's awkward upbringing. His childhood was far from, "The Cosby Show" yet it is explained in a way that is quite unlike most biographies of high profile stars that claim of such horrible childhood life.

Too often are we subjected to a "Where Are They Now" documentary by some celebrity telling us that they were mentally abused, or how their horribly painful past forced them into a drug plagued life. Ken Shamrock doesn't mirror this all to common pattern. He simply tells about his life - and it doesn't appear to be one that most of us would have wanted at times.

The second half of the book can, and will, put any reader who isn't a professional athlete or combatant into shape. One will be surprised at the amount of inside information that Shamrock shares. I've met many mixed martial artists and several of them couldn't complete the training regimen that is covered here.

Some have belittled Shamrock for having the book co-authored, but that is a very unfair criticism. Ken Shamrock is a master fighter - an athlete - a competitor. He has a great story to share with us. Does any of that make him qualified to transfer that to paper and deliver it in a manner that is entertaining and interesting? No.

That is no disrespect to Ken. He is a master at what he does. And he is very smart for having a co-author. I would assume that Ken, and most of you, have an accountant prepare your taxes. We all bring in experts to handle tasks for us. There is no shame in that.

Professional wrestlers have amazing stories to tell and they are finally being shared with us all.

Katherine Davidsen completed her BA (Hons) in Indonesian at Monash University. She has since worked in Melbourne, Indonesia and Hanoi, teaching English ESL, Indonesian and Japanese. Good buy

This was much smaller than I thought it would be, but that was because I didn't read the dimensions carefully. It is the perfect size to carry around and is super easy to understand. There are pages in the front that explain the different abbreviations and symbols. Great value for the price!

This is the dictionary you want

I bought this dictionary when I learned I would be working for an NGO in Indonesia. My interpreter had a larger "complete" English-Indonesian dictionary but she never used it because this little dictionary was better. I bought a second one to give to my interpreter as a Christmas present.

This is one of the few English-Indonesian dictionaries that lists words with their prefixes. Indonesian verbs do not have tenses, but they do have prefixes and suffixes which change their meaning. If you don't know the root word (not always easy to sort out) you can't look the word up in most dictionaries. Not so with this one. If you don't speak any Bahasa Indonesia, you need the simplest tools you can find. This one is it, and it's the perfect size to take everywhere you go.

My only complaint is that the cover on the second one I purchased is much flimsier than the first one. Maybe it was just an error in that production batch.

Excellent and unequalled

This book is excellent and unequalled. Though written one hundred years ago and re-released in the 1970's and 1980's by Tuttle, it is the best historical reference for Japan up to the 20th century that I've seen. I bought my copy 20 years ago and have lived in Japan for 12 years and still often reference it.

Found this book to be extremely helpful in researching Japanese history and to help deepen my understanding of all the events in Japanese history. There are a few errors in it that I've found, but overall, it's a very informative book.

Japanese historical dictionary: critical, classic research tool

The "Historical and Geographic Dictionary of Japan" by E. Papinot was originally published in 1910 when the Emperor Meiji ruled, a united Korea was part of Japan, and the regnal era name Showa referred to a 14th century emperor rather than the 20th century Emperor Hirohito. The book is thus outdated in that it does not include recent information, but it nonetheless remains a resource of great merit, one that contributed significantly to my research for "Symbols of Japan: Thematic Motifs in Art and Design."

The heart of the book is its alphabetized 765 pages of dictionary definitions of people, places, ceremonials, and bureaucratic matters. Japanese ideographs appear solely in these pages to render the name of the entry, but the book does assume that its user is searching against a romanized Japanese term. For example, page 560 has an entry for "Shaku-i shi-ju-hachi kai" which means the 48 ranks of nobles and officials system established in 685, but it provides no way of locating this material should the user be familiar only with an English-language descriptor. In addition to these A-to-Z entries, Papinot has included numerous appendices. Among these are identifications of important foreigners; tables of classical province, department and district names; mythological times; and chronological tables of the emperors, military shoguns, and "nengo" (regnal era years).

Good Starting Point

This book is, as it says, a good beginning for someone unfamiliar with Taiji Quan. It demonstrates the Beijing 24 movement form. This was in fact, my very first book on the subject, and gave me a basic understanding of Taiji Quan form and movement, before I was able to find an instructor.

Overall, the material is easy to follow, the illustrations are clearly drawn, the directional arrows are a big help in determining proper transition between the forms.

If you are completely new to Taiji Quan and have no access to a teacher, you will find this book a good starting point.

Lacks theory and detail; incorrect movements.

This book LACKS a great attention to detail in the most common of areas. Hands are left open on every movement, footwork is almost non-existant, and the center of gravity is every BUT where it belongs. The demo of the Muk-Yan-Chong goes back and forth with pictures of Dr. Smith and one of his students. Every Wing Chun practitioner knows the swords are NEVER turned backwards along the forearm, yet he displays this quite often. The pole form is over 50 movements, yet Dr. Smith displays approximately 10 and claims this is all there really is. There is very little detail in the execution of movements outside of a general description. In short, this book looks to be written for someone who has no knowledge of Wing Chun, Wing Tsun, or Ving Tsun whatsoever. Those that do, I recommend not wasting your money.

Excellent basic guide to learning the 24 movement form.

As a teacher of Tai Chi and having read numerous books on this topic, I recommend this book highly to all beginning students. It is very difficult to learn any psychomotor skill from just a book; however, this book is an excellent addition to those who are taking Tai Chi and are learning the basic 24 movement form. The drawings are a lot more clearer than any photograph showing the Tai Chi Forms, and I found the instructions are helpful to follow the movements.

Laura Kingdon is a graduate of Yonsei University's Korean Language Institute, so understands firsthand the complexities of learning Korean grammar. She is fluent in several languages and runs a translation firm. She has designed curricula and taught English as a Second Language to students of all ages, ranging from university students in Kazakhstan to elementary school children in Korea. After years of living in Seoul, she has recently moved to Thailand.

Revised edition is better

To address comments below, the revised 2004 edition includes more idioms with the same categories, but MOST importantly includes the phrases in Hangeul, which was a major shortcoming of the first edition. The romanization is different - 2000 official Revised Romanization of Korean is used along with a rough pronunciation. Even if you have the first edition, you should get a copy of the revised edition!

useful phrases; poor romanization

Overall this book includes a wide variety of up-to-date expressions and slang. I had heard many of the phrases in Korea, but until reading this book I didn't know what they meant, proof that this book is just as useful for advanced students as well as for pure beginners. My main gripe is with romanization. For example, Korean has an "uh" sound and an "oh" sound; in this book they are all written the same way. Also, the author has no knowledge of Korean grammar (e.g. he says "mashida" literally means "liquid"), which gives me less confidence to use phrases I have never heard before.

probably better than most other phrase books

Don't let other serious students steer you away from this book just because it's not a textbook; phrase books have their place for serious students also. I have learned both from phrase books for weguksaram's and from phrase books for Koreans.

Unless you are more kind-hearted than I am, you might be especially interested in Chapter 9, "Curses and Insults." That had some words and phrases which I have been unable to find in the dictionary. I even made a special computer file so that I could study those words and phrases.

To read the book through once takes only a couple of hours. Still, it's worth the price.
