Written by a Japanese court noble during the Heian period (794-1184), the Sakuteiki includes both technical advice on gardening—much of which is still followed in today's Japanese gardens—and an examination of the four central threads of allegorical meaning, which were integral features of Heian-era garden design. About the Author
Jiro Takei, professor emeritus of the Kyoto College of Art, taught a course on the Sakuteiki for many years. Throughout his long and distinguished career, he has been deeply involved in the study of Japanese gardens, as the Chairman of the Japanese Garden Academic Society (Nihon Teien Gakkai), regional chief of the Gardening Academic Society (Zoen Gakkai), and chief researcher of the Research Center for Japanese Garden Art (Nihon Teien Kenkyu Senta).

Marc P. Keane is a garden designer, artist, and author based in Ithaca NY. Having lived in Kyoto Japan for nearly 20 years, his work is deeply influenced by the aesthetics and culture of Japan. Keane is the author of 7 books including, "Japanese Garden Design" (an introduction to the history and design of Japanese gardens), "The Japanese Tea Garden" (the history, design and aesthetics of the Japanese tea garden), "The Art of Setting Stones" (essays for the philosophical gardener, or the gardening philosopher), and "Dear Cloud" (a meditation on nature from the perspective of a unique traveler). HEIRLOOM that any Japanophile would lovingly pass down to his children.

This is THE BOOK to get for the Japanophile in your family. Not only does the book have the actual translation of this 900 year old classic work about gardening, but it is also a look into the aesthetic philosophy of garden beauty. The authors' commentary goes into nature, geomancy and taboos and other matters about the classic work. The book has index, glossary and ample footnotes. A quote to make you chuckle states, "When a stone from the mountains or riverbeds is set in the manner of deities, it will become a 'demon stone', there are many cases throughout the country of trouble stemming from doing this". I will treasure this book forever.

This book has made an enjoyable read, although it is more philosophical than practical. Nevertheless, the book provided insights into meanings and symbolic understandings of plants, rocks, boulders, flagstones, etc. as the;y are used in gardens in Japan. I will cherish this book as I go about creating a small garden at
my desert home in California.

Sakuteiki Visions of the Japanese Garden provides a foundational context for understanding many perspectives on Japanese Gardening. It begins with Visions of the Garden including the context of life in the period it was written. The emphasis on Nature, Geomancy, Buddhism and Taboos. In the words of the author on page 37 of the text:
"By examining each of these interpretations, we hope to set the stage for a deeper understanding of this ancient Treatise as well as to offer, to gardeners and garden designers alike, possibilities of enhancing their own work."

So foundational common principles and context for garden design they are too numerous to list in a review. A single example:

A beautifully illustrated book on the paintings of Tarkay

This book is contains much of the art output of Itzchak Tarkay. The paintings are printed on high quality paper, and represent the bulk of the book. The only criticism is that there is too little analysis of the paintings' relationship to each other.

About the Author
Oscar Ratti received his degree in classical studies and law from the University of Naples where he was intercollegiate Greek-Roman wrestling champion and a member of the championship judo team. He later came to the United States and began to study aikido with Yasuo Ohara, one of the first instructors to teach in New York.

Adele Westbrook studied philosophy at Columbia University at the same time co-author Oscar Ratti was doing graduate work in the classical languages. They began to practice aikido together, and while studying under a variety of instructors in the United States and Europe, started the collection of notes and sketches which finally developed into this illustrated introduction to the art of aikido.

They also authored Secrets of the Samurai, and Mr. Ratti, now deceased, also provided the illustrations for Code of the Samurai, both available from Tuttle Publishing.

This is a fantastic book, overall

This is a fantastic book, overall, though I am probably not experienced enough yet to fully utilize it. The techniques are fully illustrated, and there is text to back it up where it's less clear. Foundational techniques like the kote gaeshi are illustrated in great detail, then other techniques that are built off of it are less descriptive, but still show what's going on. This book illustrates the flow of the techniques well, and while I'm sure it would be easier for a more experienced practitioner to follow, it helps me as a beginner to get a better grasp on the techniques that I've learned.

About the Author
Donald Richie is perhaps best known as the leading Western authority on the Japanese film and has lived in Japan since 1947. Author of the definitive works on Kurosawa and Ozu, his most recent is A Hundred Years of Japanese Film. He also write on other aspects of japan and is the author of thirty books and dozens of essays. Richie is especially well-known for his travel memoir The Inland Sea which has been adapted into a popular PBS documentary. His best-known collection is The Donald Richie Reader, which contains 50 years of his writings on Japan.

The elusive brilliance of Donald Richie

As I have complained to Amazon, and will continue to until they change their policy, three stars does not equal "okay." Neither does it mean "average," or any other words associated with it. It means it is not great and it is not bad. It means it has flashes of brilliance and other times doesn't quite get there. So, I start my review off with this caveat. I wanted to give it 3 stars, but I would never insult the memory of Donald Richie by choosing such a pedestrian rating.

But 4 stars is pushing it. This little book of "portraits" of people Donald Richie met while he spent his life in Japan is mostly fascinating, sometimes highly erotic, and other times (not often) the writer is a bit too full of himself. Some of the portraits feel like he had a word count he had to reach for an article in a newspaper, and, by God, he reached it. Some of the people he "portrayed" were not worth the time. But others, mainly the troubled son of a woman that asked Donald Richie to be his father, were erotically charged and almost poetically written. Then there is story of the twin sisters, the neighbor and the geisha, all of them expertly portrayed. Richie has this unique style where you are right there with him... when he's willing to let his guard down and stop being so clever. Other times you do marvel at the way he has with a word, but some of the subjects just weren't worth covering.

I would say that if you have an interest or knowledge about the Japan that once was (oh, how beautiful, harsh, strange and fantastic it must have been), specifically the people, this will be an interesting read. I was sorry when it was over, because, by the time Richie had interacted with the Empress of Japan, I felt he was finally getting his footing... but then the book ended soon after. So, there are hidden gems here and you will quickly determine what they are.

That said, Amazon, please give me the respect I deserve by not telling me that 3 stars is "okay" -- why do you have to qualify what the stars "mean"? Aren't people on Amazon intelligent enough to figure out that 1 star doesn't have the power of 5?

Richie got below the surface of Japan, and writes with compassion about the various people he met, from the ordinary to the imperial. They all came alive to me, and paint a beautiful picture of the country as many of us will never get to see it. I first borrowed this book from the library, but then decided this had to be on my (virtual) shelf, so bought it and re-read it with joy.

Excellent Introduction to Suiboku

This book is designed for beginners to learn the art of Suiboku; teaching about the tools used, the basics (inlcuding the four main traditional topics), and continuing with well-illustrated lessons. It even includes a bit of history. The book is well written, easy to understand, and does not 'talk down' to the reader.

While ink and wash painting did develop first in China in the seventh century, it was introduced to Japan by Zen Buddhist monks in the fourteenth century and evolved to differ somewhat from similar techniques in other parts of Asia (including those in China). Chinese ink and water is often more literal, depicting landscapes with realistic textures and details whereas Japanese ink and water emphasizes the soul rather than realism.

To seriousthinker, I appreciate your desire to set the record straight, but you are mistaken. Suiboku and Sumi-e are the pronunciations of the Japanese words for ink and water painting and Japanese ink and water painting does, indeed, exist. The techniques originated in China, but have evolved many characteristics unique to Japanese style just as watercolor painting in the west has evolved characteristics unique of watercolor painting as it originated in China. Yet, study of western watercolor painting would not accurately depict its origins in China just as study of Japanese ink and wash painting would not accurately depict its originis in China.

As for Nihonga, that is a very specific type of watercolor painting using colored mineral pigments called Iwa Enogu. It is yet another Japanese evolution of watercolor painting (which originated in China even before ink and wash painting). Yes, ink and wash painting originated in China, but Japanese ink and wash is not the same thing as Chinese ink and wash and the two should be studied as separate and unique. This book is a great place to start.

This is the best book out there on the market,originally published in 1959,this book has remained a classic.You will be taken on an intriguing journey led by Ryukyu Saito.If your a beginner or an expert this book will be not only be your teacher but your friend which will patiently guide you in the Suiboko Technique.

Too much literature not enough technique

Teaching means to empart knowledge. This book gives very little in technique and a lot in the reason for sumi-e. Example: it gives a new name and does not explain the reason for its use in place of "sumi".
How is the brush turned when making the trunk, or when making mum leaves. How much ink vs water to create the dry brush effect for the plum.
The author mud decide if it's the desire to teach or have ones name in print that is important.

The migration of Chinese from southeastern China to the Nanyang--the peninsular and insular region known today as Southeast Asia--is a significant component of the world's major cultural diasporas. After many of these migrants and their descendants became successful, they built architecturally eclectic homes--shophouses, bungalows, villas, and mansions--that combined Chinese, European, and local influences. It is the story of these hybrid architectural forms, built under different social and geographical environments than had been known at home in China and thus the products of cultural fusion, that is the focus of this book. While most of these old buildings have disappeared, scattered throughout Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, there still remain; fine examples worth studying, documenting, and explaining. Over a three-year period from 2007 to 2009, Ronald G. Knapp and A. Chester Ong made; five; field excursions to Asia in search of the old homes of Chinese sojourners and settlers. "Chinese Houses of Southeast Asia, " a fascinating account of architectural multiculturalism in the pre-modern world, presents the results of their research. An introductory essay portrays the historical circumstances that gave rise to Chinese houses overseas, and includes historic images, color photographs, paintings, and line drawings. At the core of the book are stunning color photographs of nearly forty residences built from the late eighteenth into the early twentieth century. For each residence, background information about the individual and his family who built and then lived there is given. Useless picture book - the cover being the most interesting

Not really a collection of different examples of architecture. Just a few specific sites are shown. They are not that different, there are no details, really unhelpful book.

A serious book that also looks good on a coffee table

I can't imagine there being a better book out there on Chinese houses as this book has history and expert photographs. What's more it also has well-drawn sections and plans. Most books on this subject will use old diagrams or ancient drawings that are a hassle to decipher. Here the diagrams are purpose-drawn, clean, and add a great deal to the understanding. About a third is dedicated to a general history of the form, construction methods, social life, and geographical variety; and about two-thirds to about 8 pages each on specific houses. Just enough info on each.

The one gripe I would have is that, in the part of the book where he gives a general introduction of the elements and history of Chinese houses, he uses photos from the twenty or so houses that he discusses individually. It would have given a bit more breadth (and reduced a bit of redundancy later on) if he had used that opportunity for photos of houses that were not given an individual focus.

I like this book because it is very easy to understand, yet informative. If you are a beginning student, or you just want to learn a little Japanese for a trip then this book is a for you. It is small and thin which makes it perfect for studying on the go.

This book is really well structured. You learn key grammatical practices little by little, as you learn the vocabulary and phrases. For a phrase book, it is quite impressive.

Great book!

I just got back from a two-week vacation in Japan, where I used several books in an attempt to improve my miniscule knowledge of Japanese. This book was the best of a good lot; the word selection is excellent, and the book teaches sufficient grammar almost effortlessly; most important, it's small enough to finish fairly quickly. Of course, it's only a start--for a second book, I recommend "Japanese Made Easy" by Tazuko Ajiro Monane.
Even if you thoroughly learn the content of this book, though, you still want to carry around a phrase book for those (frequent) times when 100 words just isn't enough. De Mente's book will teach you enough Japanese so that you can make simple sentences without looking up every word, but you will still need words not in this book.
[Minor complaints: he spells the word "o" (pronounced "o") with the old spelling "wo" throughout the book, for no apparent reason. Also, an index would have been nice.]
In short, the book is superb for its one intended purpose, which is teaching a very basic, careful selection of Japanese--an "instant" introduction.
