A good basic manual containing some of the most effective fighting techniqes.

I have had a life long passion for the martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Boxing, Kickboxing, Krav Maga, Target Focus training, Combatives and numerous other combat arts). In my search for more knowledge on fighting I have trained both as a student and instructor in many different combat systems. I have also read and written reviews on numerous books on the combat arts. This book, Fight To Win: 20 simple techniques that win any fight by Martin Dougherty, attempts to cover two separate fighting subjects at the same time.

In each section he explains how a particular fighting technique can be used in UFC type of competition and how the same technique can possibly also be used in a real street combat situation. I am not convinced he succeeded in both of these objectives; however, if you are seeking to learn these techniques to enter competition you may get more out of this book. This text is organized into 13 chapters and covers the following material:

Martial arts or fighter? Functioning in the fight environment, fighting principles, ground fighting basics, straight strikes, hooked strikes, elbow strikes, kicks and knees, leg takedowns, reaping takedowns, other takedowns, submissions and destructions and putting it all together. The pages are slick and all the photographs are in color showing all the techniques. The photographs are small, however, and without a competent and knowledgeable instructor guiding you on how to perform these techniques I think it would be extremely difficult to learn the material in this book. Nevertheless, most of the techniques shown in this book are valid basic combat methods that serious martial art students should learn. In this respect, this book combined with actual hands-on training with an instructor will produce excellent results.

Just one more point, the author would have been better off writing one volume for controlled competition training for Judo, Jujitsu and Mixed martial art and a completely separate volume for actual street self-defense tactics. Yes, many of the techniques used in competition can also be used in a street combat situation; however, as the true saying goes, "You will react in a combat situation exactly how you were trained." If you are just training for sport scenarios this is how you will react on the street when someone taps out or pulls a weapon on you or you get attacked by more than one person etc. In any case, I did like this book and if you learn these techniques you will be better prepared for sport competition activities, but if you are seeking a street combat system you may want to check out other combative systems such as Krav Maga, Target Focus Training, Kelly McCain's Combatives and numerous other street systems. Stay armed and stay safe and free.

Kick but!!

I kicked about two dudes butts just walking home today. Easy read with lots of pictures. Simple chapters with lots of examples. The "Put It All Together" chapter was the best. I like to kick butt, so that one really helped me.

I'm going out now and looking for a fight. Yeah hear.

I have spent many years traveling and living in Bali and, like the author, have studied Balinese dance. I am very critical of books about Balinese arts and culture. I am pleased that Ms. Noensie, gets it right: The details and the emotional tone blend beautifully to produce a children's picture book that balances historical and cultural facts in an accessible manner. Dancing and life events are woven into the text with a care that echoes the care with which they are woven into daily Balinese life. Readers who have more experience in Bali will enjoy the manner in which Noensie uses Indonesian words such a "kodok," meaning frog. Lovely illustrations by Garretta Lamore contribute to the overall tone. The illustration and description of the family compound being like the human body is the best depiction I have seen. Children will be enthralled, and parents will want to learn more. A delightful book for all ages.

Tari The Little Balinese Dancer

I love this book about a little girl growing up in Bali. It gives children insight into another culture. It is the story of a little girl who loves to dance. She has a very close relationship with her grandmother. She wants to be a dancer like her grandmother who was once a famous Balinese dancer. The book also deals in a natural way with the death of her grandmother including the Balinese rituals around death. It includes stories of important loving relationships between family, friends, animals and nature. I would recommend it to all ages.

Charming historical fiction

Tari; the little Balinese dancer is a charming, real-life based story of a far distant land. Woven within the pages are descriptions of the history of the island of Bali, along with customs of the native population. Tari's daily activities are well described, as well as her relationship with her family and village. The death of her grandmother is treated with respect and becomes a focal point of Tari's growth, especially in her love of the dance.

The book is educational, historical, and cultural for young to mid elementary school aged children. It would have an ideal position in a curriculum on world cultures and geography. Weaving a story into history always encourages creative thinking and imagination in a child.
Reading the book out loud for story time might need some poetic inflections to ward off some of the stilted phrases. Certainly the illustrations will assist in opening the eyes of the younger student.

The illustrations are gently composed and readily translate the author's meanings. It is only on the cover where one engaging illustration should be highlighted, not a handful of various poses.

About the Author
Origami Master Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist for over 40 years, and is considered a leading authority and master of the art. An avid teacher, LaFosse co-founded the Origamido Studio, a learning center and design studio dedicated to the art of origami, and the only place in the world specializing in hand papermaking for the origami artist. Author of many books and videotapes relating to paperfolding and hand papermaking, LaFosse produces fine paper art and commercial designs for a variety of international clients. He was prominently featured in the recent Peabody Award-winning documentary, Between the Folds.

Richard L. Alexander co-founded the Origamido Studio, where he is the chief papermaker. As a designer his specialties have included biology (systems ecology) and landscape architecture. Together, Alexander and LaFosse have created dozens of origami exhibitions, and more than seventy books, kits, and videos about paper and paper arts.

Beautiful models.

Although there are fewer models, they are original and some of the best, especially the bat. This kit includes a DVD and correct sized papers. Well worth the money. :)

A whole new world of dollar tips are available with the $3 bird base

The individual units of the $3 bird base are easily folded and assembled. The finished crane is impressive because of its stately size. When created using two dollar bills (for a $6 tip), the crane is quite striking. Many origami folds are made from the bird base. Knowing how to make one using three bills is well worth the cost of this small book. A traditional star is included, from the bird base, for an impressive finished fold.

This kit is worth the price!!! I have been wanting to learn how to make a traditional crane out of money. This method is a little large but works. The video instruction is very well made that even a person who has never folding origami can do this. HIghly reccomended.

Gr 2-5-This thought-provoking collection of 19 tales will resonate with readers familiar with more commonly known fables or parables such as those of Aesop or the Bible. Nunes draws upon Chinese yu-yen, or cautionary tales; some of them date to the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. She expands the original versions into brief (one to three page) tales accompanied by Tay-Audouard's enticing illustrations. A wry sense of humor runs through these selections, which point out the folly of arrogance, vanity, greed, and other common failings. Some tales celebrate virtues, such as "The Practical Bride" whose resourceful heroine solves her wedding-day dilemma of a poorly made sedan chair without mussing her elaborate wedding headdress. A grazing cow teaches an arrogant musician a lesson in "The Wrong Audience." Other standouts include "Sakyamuni and Lao-Tse" and "Scaring the Tigers"; ironically, arrows fail to scare the tigers but a heavy sheaf of donation requests from the monks makes them beat a hasty retreat. All of the stories benefit from the minutely detailed illustrations, which appear both stylized and naive. Created in pencil and wash on bamboo rag paper using natural elements such as pressed leaves, charcoal, and ground tea, the art is both exquisite and appropriate to the rustic origins of these tales. This is one of those rare books that speaks to all ages. Shiho Nunes brings a thoughtful selection of beautifully illustrated tales to life with the voice of a natural-born storyteller. I am looking forward to reading and discussing them with my children and grandchildren.

Amusing anecdotes showcase the clever and the clueless

A jogging bride, a musician who woos a cow, a noisy thief, rambunctious religionists, mercenary monks, an unemployed dragon slayer: These are some of the characters vividly portrayed in Shiho Nunes' Chinese Fables. The one-to two-page tales, which date from 500 BCE to the 12th century CE, are reminiscent of currently popular flash fiction, rich in detail despite their succinctness. In fact the source for this book is a collection of story lines that Ms. Nunes has fleshed out brilliantly.
Illustrations by Lak-Khee Tay-Audouard are at once charming and sumptuous, with exquisite elaboration.
Chinese Fables is an ideal gift for either children or adults.

About the Author
Boye Lafayette De Mente has been involved with Japan, China, and Korea since the late 1940s as a member of a U.S. intelligence agency, student, trade journalist, editor, and author working out of Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He is a graduate of Jochi University in Tokyo and The American Institute for Foreign Trade (now Thunderbird: The School of Global Management). His 70-plus books include Korean Business Etiquette, Survival Korean, Etiquette Guide to China, and Instant Chinese.

I expected too much from the book, and I was not fully satisfied.

I was attracted by the title and the introduction, and then I bought the book. Since I am interested the business issues, I thought the book would provide a different view point, and well, it did, but not quite as much as I expected. Also, the opinions are not strongly supported by real life examples, so they are so not very convincing. From a cultural perspective, I assume the author is not very familiar with Chinese, and the explanation of some Chinese phrases is somehow misleading. For example, the Budan XIn, which the author regards it as an expression of sincerity, is not well understood, at least to me as a native Chinese speaker.

Thus, I may recommend this book to the non-Chinese, who show interest in Chinese business way and its culture. Not a recommended book for native Chinese.

This was a gift

for my adult son who does travel to China on business from to time. I didn't want to insult him by giving him a 'how to' book on something he already has done. His response was that he knew about half the stuff in there and learned the other half. Actually for someone who has everything, is a guy, and is very difficult to buy (affordable) gifts for, this was a hit. I compared all the books on the subject and wanted to get something up to date. I could tell he liked it from his 'thank you.'

A clear and concise guide

As in most all of Boye Lafayette De Mente's books, The Chinese Way in Business offers a clear, concise guide to what one will encounter in another culture and how to overcome cultural barriers. He gives a good overview and history of why Chinese culture values certain traits and how they have a bearing on Chinese business practices. A must-read for those doing or planning to do business in China! I also recommend his book Kata: The Key to Understanding and Dealing with the Japanese!

About the Author
Paul Reps, the compiler, was an American who lived in many countries, including India, Norway, and Japan, and studied many of man's efforts to find and realize his true spiritual stature. He was the author of several books of poems and prose. He once said that he felt "the equal of each grass blade and pebble and believe that it is possible to be happy though human and grown up."

Nyogen Senzaki, a Buddhist scholar of international character to whom Reps acknowledged a deep debt of gratitude, was born in Japan. Early in life he became a "homeless monk," wandering the land and studying from Buddhist monastery to monastery. His wanderings eventually took him to America, where for over 50 years he lived in California, with no connection with any sect, denomination, or cathedral, radiating the free and creative spirit of Zen upon all who cared to share his study, meditation, wisdom, and loving kindness.

Highly recommended

Of all books about Zen, this is most unassuming I've seen. There is no theory or abridged version of zen philosophy. The stories are carefully chosen and gracefully translated. They leave the reader in a state of wonder, curiosity and puzzlement. What I liked in this book is that it is not trying to educate the reader by teaching him a doctrine. It seems to me that it is true to the zen spirit in this respect. A little literary gem.

This was my first Buddhist book way back in the '70s and I replaced it because it is wonderful and I found myself wanting to re-read some stories that made me laugh out loud. Also, This copy has the illustrations of finding and losing your bull. Those simple illustrations were a personal requisite when I looked up the different books available.

Ideal introduction

Zen Flesh, Zen Bones
To a student of Zen, it is unnecessary to introduce this book. For those folks reading about Zen for the first time, this is a collection of Zen and Pre-Zen writings. For the greater part, it allows you to explore with your own mind these great insights without a lot of left-brain interference. Oh yes, you get clues but no answers, because these must come from the fusion of the neurons in your own brain.
I will have to admit that I no longer lend this book to anyone. It never comes back. My copy is old and has notations on every page, thoughts that occurred to me. While I was reading it for the first time a few years back, I had a dream. In the dream, I entered an ancient house and walked down into the black basement. As I opened each of a series of doors in this darkness, I would reach for the light in the center of the room. Light after light popped on. I am sure I do not have to interpret this dream for you. That is exactly what happened to the darkness in my mind: light after light illuminated my world. I was so excited I could hardly breathe. It was the beginning of a long flight towards freedom.
The greatest part of this is you do not have to learn to meditate. Each teaching brings you closer and closer to solving the problem of your mind, that is, relating conscious to preconscious awareness, into your every day living. It offers the flesh and bones of Zen. The marrow is your discovery of yourself.
