All of the numbers are interpreted with a Western-sounding melody, acoustic guitar, and young people singing. Overall, they are soothing enough for bedtime listening. The stylized artwork appears to be digitally enhanced, with large swatches of saturated color and plenty of elements from the rhymes, such as butterflies, blossoms, and children at play. Just as the melodies have a familiar feeling, so do the rhymes, which feature topics such as jump-rope games, naming facial features, and getting a little fright from a goblin. Each line of the text is written in Korean, followed by the transliteration in bold print, and then the English translation. Good Selection of Songs

We keep an eye out for children's books with Korean content, since there is very little available. When I saw this was out, I purchased a copy for my daughter. She immediately took to the book, and I enjoy that it has all the songs in Korean and English. I made a copy of all the Korean versions for grandma's house.

They've done a very good job of translating the songs into English that matches fairly close to the Korean cadence. The book is enjoyable to read through as poetry, too, just reading each page without knowing the tune (yet). The English versions are sung by New Zealanders, so occasionally the accent comes out. The production quality is good, with guitar backing up all of the singing. (I mention this because too much children's music is low-quality MIDI music.)

The song selection is a nice mix. Some are songs a mother would sing to a child, while others are songs you'd expect kids to sing themselves. Most of the songs are older or traditional songs. Honestly, the only song I was hoping for that wasn't there is "santokki" (mountain rabbit), which was one of the first songs my daughter could sing from memory. It does have "nabi ya" (butterfly), which was another of my daughter's favorites already.

Cute but...

Nice concept and cute book, but the music is a little hard to understand. Both the songs sung in Korean and English are difficult to understand--the words are not clear. There is a quality about the song production that sounds a bit home-made. They also are not as playful as I had imagined they would be. They sound a bit more like church music. A plus to the soothing sound is that this CD always helps put my son to sleep in the car. I would purchase this again, but I would just have slightly different expectations.

Steps towards becoming an Old Cat

Christopher Hellman has brought together 5 diverse texts by 4 writers on Japanese swordsmanship that are relatively unknown outside of Japan and in doing so has made available a store of knowledge of great value to anyone interested in martial arts in general as well as Japanese swordsmanship in particular. The first two essays ("The Mysterious Skills of the Old Cat" and "Sword Theory") are short and to the point and, frankly, after reading just those I felt I had got my money's worth. The first is a witty animal fable about a legendary mouser who can perform feats of rat catching beyond bigger and more athletic cats and expounds the elusive but fundamental phenomenon of "no mind" in martial arts, a theme that runs throughout the different writings in the book. The second essay is a down-to-earth but passionate declaration of the importance of ruthlessness and fearlessness in combat. Though vastly different in tone, together they underline the value of spirit over technique. The following two, "A Treatise on the Sword" and "Joseishi's Discussions on the Sword", are more discursive in style with frequent learned allusions to Chinese culture that can be a bit exasperating for a modern audience (though Hellman includes helpful notes on the same page), so it is easy to feel that you can't identify a main argument. However, what emerges is an interesting collage of details connecting swordsmanship to the role of the samurai that re-emphasise the primacy of attitude and heart in one's approach. The final essay, "Ignorance in Swordsmanship", is written as a dialogue, witnessed by the author, between his teacher and a distinguished visitor. I found it much easier to follow than the two preceding essays with an interesting emphasis on a moral dimension to the life of a master swordsman. What connects all the essays is the cultivation of the right spirit for a swordsman, something of fundamental importance for a martial artist of any level. A very readable introduction provides some interesting background information to the role of the samurai and the writing of the texts, as well as brief biographical sketches of the writers themselves. As a student of sword, myself, I found much in this book that was interesting and inspiring.

My husband is Filipino and we got this book so he could teach me Tagalog. The book is good and has a lot of useful words and lessons. A lot of the sentence structure they teach is more formal and isn't what is actually used in the Philippines. The CD could be better if it told you the English version of the words.

Not a good book for Beginners

When I first got the book I thought it was basic Tagalog, but it wasn't. This book is for people that know some Tagalog. It was very hard to use for learning the language. Not a good book for beginners.

From the Few Comes Adequacy

There aren't many sources from which you can learn Tagalog, which is strange, since it's the second most widely spoken Asian language here in the US. In fact, the study of Japanese is the big fad right now although it doesn't even make the top ten list of most widely spoken languages (besides English) in the US, according to the 2000 census. Anyway, I'm currently in high school and studying ang wikang Tagalog recreationally, and I was fascinated when I polled my friends and familiy about languages spoken in the US...asked whether or not they were aware of the Vietnamese, Mandarin (Chinese), Korean, and occasionally even the Hmong languages, most responded affirmatively.

However, when I questioned my friends and family members about their awareness of Tagalog language...only 1 of friends knew this language even existed (he's half Filipino). In fact, most of my friends and family didn't know where the Philippines even are, and a few didn't even know there was such a country.

Not to mention the intimidation factor of the Tagalog language; yes, Chinese and Japanese have radically different scripts and grammar than English, but there are tremendous resources for both! Japanese has anime and manga as an enticing resource, and Mandarin Chinese has that whole top language in the world thing (1.3 billion speakers), but Tagalog is entirely scary when potential learners see sweet, innocent little words, like tiwala, meaning 'trust', heinously mutilated by prefixes, infixes, and suffixes to become: pinakapinagkakatiwalaan; which means, I think, 'the most trusted'. Who, among the Americans of my generation, so accustomed to instant gratification, would really care to learn the grammar of a language that would even attempt something like that, unless to get in touch with their roots?

Not to mention the reassurance of "oh, the Philippines had been under Spanish rule for hundreds of years, and the Tagalog language has been tremendously influenced by teh spansh language!3@!!#432!!" Well, not really. There are actually several languages in the Philippines that are much more Spanish-influenced, but grammar-wise, Tagalog just didn't conform besides adopting stuff like numbers (veintedos as opposed to dalawampu't dalawa), some nouns, and words like mas (more) or o (or). Yes, learning Spanish would help...with about 400 words. Good luck from there.

This book is a decent resource out of the very few affordable resources for Tagalog out there. It's updated, and contains reading material to practice on (or just freak yourself out with), and I hate to break it to you...but it's only a book. Basic Tagalog will not teach you words at an amazing rate, learn "like a child would", "pass as a native", or any other commonly guaranteed results if you don't do the excercises, and if you don't make an effort to make flashcards, or if you put no extra effort in learning whatsoever. Unfortunately, learning from a book-any book on language-will feel like work at one time or another, even if you're simply learning out of interest like I am. This is not the book's fault; it utilizes, most of the time, the drill-and-rote method of learning, which means if you only "go by the book" and not take the effort to say, watch any Tagalog-language movies or speak to Tagalog-speaking people, it might take years to master.

In short, I was very surprised by the good quality of the book. I agree with other reviewers that it should contain answers, and it is INCREDIBLY annoying that there are typos within the book itself (!), but we're getting reading material from essayists and poets as opposed to trite little tourist phrases, and perhaps the lack of an answer key was to influence the reader to become more of an active learner...to study the writing provided, to study it's structure and affirm for oneself whether one is correct or not, or even influence the reader to (in the age of the internet) ask a fluent speaker, who would be incredibly happy to know someone else is attempting to master a language they love.

Perhaps I'm overthinking it ;)

Either way, Basic Tagalog is inexspensive enough where you can purchase it, take what you need from it, and leave it if you so prefer...or become interested in adopting a ruggedly lyrical, resilient language and connecting with the equally resilient people who've bothered learning it.

This is an amazing book, written with sincere passion to provide an important communication tool between Japanese and foreign visitors to Japan. This book gave the greatest impact to Japanese people of the time around 1860's. More amazing is that this book is the best book to learn Japanese pronunciation (of the time) even in the 21st century. Japanese are not capable to provide proper description on Japanese pronunciation as they do not know how to do it properly. (I teach Japanese language and English language in Japan). This book should be highly regarded for linguists who works on Japanese language.

A good book about Southern Lohan

This is a good book, for people who want to learn more about Southern Lohan. It has many training methods, and many techniques. It also contains one form of the style. It is informative in everyway, but not a great deal of detail on the style itself

This book gives you a very good description of this Kung Fu style from history trough basic hand signs and greetings to basic stances, punches and kicks with drills for footwork. The Lohan pattern is alsoe shown in what i belive to be gret detail with several picturesfirst as a solo form and then again with the aplications. Pictures are big and clear with easy to understand and god text. A brief chapter alsoe on the shaolin fist and hand conditioning exersices.

This volume should be a must for anyone interested in following the Shaolin path, I found it to be clear and it continually challenged me to increase my efforts to learn the techniques of the Shaolin masters. Well worth the money.

About the Author
Timothy Richard traveled to China in 1868 as a Baptist missionary. When other missionaries were attempting to stamp out the popular local tales of gods and heroes such as The Monkey King's Amazing Adventures, Thomas Richard championed them for the universal messages of spiritual challenge and growth they contain. he is alto the author of Forty-five Years in China.

Daniel Kane is the Head of Chinese from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the Australian National University. He was visiting scholar at the Department of Chinese at Peking University in 1988 and 1993 and Cultural Counselor at the Australian Embassy in Beijing in 1996.

Beautiful story

For those who enjoy mythology and fantastic tales this book is for you. Plenty of fights and battles between supernatural warriors. However the story revolves around the Monkey's personal journey, first to gain the knowledge to become powerful and inmortal, then his naughty adventures as an inmortal disrupting heaven, earth and hell and finally to redeem himself by helping Monk Xuanzang from China get the Buddhist sacred scriptures from the remote West (India).
This book is like a Kung Fu flick from the Tang dinasty and it's a delightful first step to study the chinese literary tradition.

The brave band faces a formidable array of enemies, foremost among them the treacherous and bloodthirsty Ts'ao Ts'ao. The bold struggle of the three heroes seems doomed until the reclusive wizard Chuko Liang offers his counsel, and the tide begins to turn.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is China's oldest novel and the first of a great tradition of historical fiction. Believed to have been compiled by the play-wright Lo Kuan-chung in the late fourteenth century, it is indebted to the great San-kuo chi (Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms) completed by the historian Ch'en Shou just before his death in 297 CE. The novel first appeared in print in 1522. This edition, translated in the mid-1920s by C. H. Brewitt-Taylor, is based on a shortened and simplified version which appeared in the 1670s. An Introduction to this reprint by Robert E. Hegel, Professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Washington University, provides an insightful commentary on the historical background to the novel, its literary origins and its main characters.

Great story but a very sloppy edition

The story is truly a classic and the translation is pretty good. However, the actual product is pretty sloppy. Volume one was less problematic than volume two, but both had a high number of instances. The main problem is that letters that are similar in shape, such as b and d, p and g, etc. get switched, almost once a page. Also, the names weren't proofread very well, as apostrophes get pretty regularly left out. In a translation system where an apostrophe is the only difference between the names to two characters or places, this becomes a source of confusion. Also, entire words are left out pretty regularly. I wonder if any highly fluent English speakers actually got to proofread this, because most of these errors are so obvious. These errors aren't so bad that it is unreadable, but they really take a person out of the scene while the confusion is dispelled.

I love the Three Kingdoms. However, having read Brewitt-Taylors masterful exposition, this translation seems lacking, in my opinion.

First, I must confess, I hate the modern Pinyin system of romanization. I cannot abide in a system where letters do not have the proper values. I mean, an entire generation of Americans (and God help the ignorant French!) will pronounce names like Cao Cao as "Cow Cow", or the Qin dynasty as the "Kwin" dynasty. The Brewitt-Taylor translation uses the old Wade system, and while it can be hard on the eyes, the reader gets a sense of at least the rough pronunciation (Cao Cao is rendered Ts'ao Ts'ao, Qin is rendered Ch'in, etc).

Also, Brewitt-Taylors translation is nice to listen to. "Empires wax and wane, states cleave asunder and coalesce"; the sound itself is beautiful, and yet still renders the sense clearly. The Roberts translation certainly succeeds in the latter, but the beauty is lost. However, Brewitt-Taylor requires a very great vocabulary, whereas Roberts is more tame in this regards. Still, this was a book for scholars, and the translation should at least reflect that.

Again, if you have no familiarization with the events of this tale, the complete rainstorm of names is daunting indeed. Always keep in mind the three separate forces (Cao Cao of Wei, Liu Bei of Shu and the Sun family of Wu) as well as a few of the other players (Zhang Jiao of the Yellow Scarves, Dong Zhuo, Lu Bu, Yuan Shao. Liu Biao and Liu Zhang) and you'll do fine. The book itself, in my opinion, is the greatest book ever told, succeeding in being at once a work of strategy, psychology, government, warfare, and human emotion, and there is nothing like it in the lexicon of Western literature. Confusing For Spelling and Comprehensive For Pronunciation Ideas

Romance of Three Kingdoms is a part of East Asian culture. It overtook the heart of both Chinese and Japanese as well as people in Southeastern Asia. In Japan even younger generation who rarely read literature enjoy the story in the form of either comic books or in popular PC games. In China many of the Chinese Opera plays come from the part of this story. Every Chinatown around the world has one or some Guandi(Kuan Ti) Temples such as those in Nagasaki, Kobe and Yokohama. The story is based on the history of ancient China around late 2nd century to late 3rd century when the Chinese continent was divided by three strong kingdoms, Wei(Gui in Japanese),Wu(GO in Japanese) and Shu(SHOKU in Japanese).

Part of the popularity of three kingdoms in Japan must be credited for Eiji Yoshikawa, the author of Musashi, focusing more on the story of Liu Bei(Shu emperor),Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhuge Liang. Comic book adaptation by Mitsuteru Yokoyama who is best known by the author of Iron Man(Tetsujin)#28Tetsujin 28: The Complete Set paved the way for current three kingdom boom in Japanese pop culture in general. Liu Bei, an heir of Han Dynasty ruling clan, is a humane leader supported by Guan Yu, deft both in brain and might maybe eastern version of Knight, Zhang Fei,short tempered but really strong warrior, and Zhuge Liang the master of strategy.

Rivaling Lie Bei is another giant Cao Cao outstanding ruler and historically known as one of the finest compilers of Sun Tzu's Art of War. Cao Cao courting the emperor Xian nearly took hold of the whole Chinese continent but was blocked by the allied forces of Wu and Shu in 208 as the dramas such as Red Cliff International Version - Part I & Part II depicted. Cao Cao is a bit demonized in this story but he is in fact one of the greatest rulers China ever had comparable to Napoleon. Lie Bei who has little power gradually gains by charming a lot of talented people by his couteousness yet with propaganda tactics to demonize Cao Cao. Cao Cao soon recovered from the defeat of the Chibi battle and with the finest staff collected from the whole continent he sought to break the alliance of Shu and Wu. After the death of Cao Cao, Cao Pi took over and named himself the emperor of Weihan. But Weihan would eventually be overthrown by Sima clan who would subdue both Shu and Wu but Lie Bei, Guan Yu and Zhuge Liang are still loved and idealized by Chinese public.

On first reading you will be enjoying the way the characters outsmart the other camps. On second reading you will be struck by the humanity upon which the story is based. It is much more than a legend. It will surely get you closer to the mind of either Chinese and Japanese. But be careful. The way character name is pronounced differ between Chinese and Japanese. Such as Cao Cao is pronounced in Japanese as SOSO.

Now I must add a few things for newer 3k fans who encountered this epic through koei games. Koei adopts Pinyin system for three kingdom character names and pinyin method has almost subdued English speaking community. Brewitt Taylor uses Wade system differing so much from the way the character names were currently spelled. For example. Cao Cao is spelled T'sao T'sao. As you can see older system is useful in pronunciation ideas.

Verdict: Excellent translation getting you much closer to this Chinese epic. Must-read for chivalry novel fans.
Rating: 94 out of 100. A bit cut by spelling confusion as I mentioned.
Recommended for the fans of Sun Tzu's Art of War, Chinese dramas or action and war fictions.
