Really a book on service societies and "mutual" seduction.

This small book based on the authors Ph.D is a small gem. It off course tell the story about the male hosts catering in dreams for their female audience, but that is in my opinion just a very small part of what the book is about. The book is way more an empirical "grounded" discussion of modern service and service societies. The book draws on a significant amount of literature inside critical Anthropology and theory, without ever becoming difficult to read. As an ethnographic study I hope it will be read inside my own field of organizational behavior and theory, and in particular service management. Where it can be as an important book as "the managed heart"

My only critical comment is, that a few places the analysis and explanations tilt towards, what I call an asymmetrical and "feminist privilege" performance analysis. where the wording and dynamics highlighted makes the female patrons "victims of exploitation" - despite the fact using the same criteria of analysis would make the male host - the exploited part. That said the book always comeback to its fundamental line of analyzing the performed lies, feelings and embodyment in the mutual seductive process, which makes it such an important book for our understanding of all services.

Following key representatives of the sultan on their travels across Europe, Africa, and Arabia at the close of the nineteenth century, it takes the reader from Istanbul to Berlin, from Benghazi to Lake Chad Basin to the Hijaz, and then back to Istanbul. It turns the spotlight on the Ottoman Empire's expansionist strategies in Africa and its increasingly vulnerable African and Arabian frontiers.

Drawing on previously untapped Ottoman archival evidence, Mostafa Minawi examines how the Ottoman participation in the Conference of Berlin and involvement in an aggressive competition for colonial possessions in Africa were part of a self-reimagining of this once powerful global empire. In so doing, Minawi redefines the parameters of agency in late-nineteenth-century colonialism to include the Ottoman Empire and turns the typical framework of a European colonizer and a non-European colonized on its head. Most importantly, Minawi offers a radical revision of nineteenth-century Middle East history by providing a counternarrative to the "Sick Man of Europe" trope, challenging the idea that the Ottomans were passive observers of the great European powers' negotiations over solutions to the so-called Eastern Question.

Mastering Muay Thai Kickboxing

While not a student of MMA, but an avid follower, I've recognized these techniques as used by such greats as Anderson Silva and others. I've been a student of muay thai for over a year, and I feel this is one of the very best on the market that adheres to strict muay thai technique. One of the few I've read that doesn't bastardize or compromise the explicit technique involved in the tradition of true muay thai. All Photos are explicit, large, and in color, well demonstrated, and the format is excellent.

Not Bad, But Could Have Been So Much Better

After reading this book I was really torn on how I was going to rate it. I seriously considered giving it a 3 star rating, but then again I didn't want my rating to seem overly harsh since this book isn't really bad, just incomplete. Therefore, I decided to go with a 3 star rating and a 4 star rating with an explanation on both. First, the 4 star rating...

This book shows pretty much the entire arsenal of offensive and defensive techniques in Muay Thai in very clear full color photographs.

The layout is easy to follow and didn't present any problems for me as I was reading this book.

If you, as the reader, look at this book as a basic reference manual for the beginning student, then it really has served its purpose and lived up to its name.

And now the 3 star rating...

However, if you are buying this book with the intent to learn all the ins-and-outs of a particular technique, then you are going to be very disappointed. On almost all of the techniques shown, the only photograph you see is one showing you the end result of that particular technique. For example; when the author shows you a left roundhouse kick and a right roundhouse kick, the only photographs you have are one for each technique where the individual modeling the technique is standing there with their leg fully extended. This type of photographic layout is predominantly throughout the entire book.

The amount of text describing each technique is minimal and is really detrimental to anyone trying to learn how to correctly execute a particular technique. There seemed to be plenty of space available and had the author/publisher used the space available more wisely and perhaps used smaller photographs and a few more pages, might have really made one heck of a good book. Sadly, this is not the case.

Not that this is a horrible book by any means, it simply fell short in several areas when it came to providing a detailed description of the techniques being shown.

If you are looking for a basic reference book to show you the various techniques and a brief description of each, then this is definitely the book for you. However, if you are looking for a book to teach you in great detail the correct way to execute a particular technique, then you need to look elsewhere.

About the Author
Ron Wheeler is a two time National Champion and three time Regional Champion in the United States of America Wu Shu/Kung Fu Federation sanctioned competitions. He is a former Male Competitor of the Year for the United States Chinese Kuoshu Federation and a former member of the United States Traditional Wu Shu Team. He is a faculty member of the Department of Exercise Science at George Washington University.

The Power of Shaolin Kung Fu

'The Power of Shaolin Kung Fu' is an extremely comprehensive book, centered on the study of Jow Ga Kung Fu specifically and comes at the reader at many angles. The author, Ron Wheeler, begins by providing a history and ideology on this specific type of Kung Fu, and then provides not only exercise tips, but an actual detailed workout that one can attempt. This book, like his classes, is great for both beginners and advanced martial artists, as there are a variety of techniques and exercises that are well explained via pictures and even a dvd of him performing them.

Its strongest asset, in my opinion, is its emphasis on the application of said techniques--real life application for each technique, both in the ring and outside, is explained and described through pictures and video. It is almost as if you are receiving a personal training session with Ron Wheeler, in which he is trying to make you the best martial artist that you can be.

After training with Ron Wheeler on a regular basis, I have come to know that he has always conducted himself by the mantra that anyone can be a fighter, but few truly become `martial artists'. Technique is key, and when mixed with conditioning and a desire to succeed, the possibilities are endless. This book was clearly made in the hopes of teaching `martial arts' to those that choose to learn. So if you're an advanced martial artist looking to hone a new type of skill, a beginner looking to learn, or even simply interested in Kung Fu, check out `The Power of Shaolin Kung Fu'!

I do not know much about martial arts, but I have read The Power of Shaolin Kung Fu and I know the author, Ron Wheeler. While Ron was writing this book, he came to our house Monday mornings for almost a year to give individual personal training to my wife and me. He was a wonderful trainer, and Ron would tell us about the book he was writing.
Ron is the real deal when it comes to his craft: he is totally dedicated to what he does; he is extremely talented, knowledgeable and accomplished. He poured his heart and soul into this book.
And it is a very good book, I think. It is both a very well illustrated "how to" book, with Ron himself demonstrating all the moves, and a very interesting story about the origin and history of his particular style of martial arts (Jow Ga) and the philosophy behind it (not to be violent, but to prevent violence), as well as the culture, meaning and significance of martial arts in general and Jow Ga in particular. It is clear and well written.
For anyone interested in the topic -- and even for those of you, like me, who aren't so much -- this is an interesting and useful read. (And it comes with a CD to boot!).

Finally a book about Jow Ga!

As a former Hoy K. Lee student in Hampton Roads, Virginia, this book is detailed and is a great start in the family system Jow Ga Kung Fu.

1.The book is written well and has your typical layout of a martial arts book: history, exercise & warm-up, hand techniques, etc.
2.The book breaks down hand strikes/blocks and footwork for this system.
3.The form "Small Controlling Tiger Fist" is broken down step-by-step.
4.Additional information includes a brief explanation on external/internal principles of martial arts and a chapter that shows what weapons are in Jow Ga.
5.Every chapter has large and clear pictures that are accompanied with a text to help explain further the technique.

**The DVD demonstrates the form Small Controlling Tiger Fist (or Subduing Small Tiger) at normal speed and then slowed down to offer closer detail. The book breaks down the sections to the form and the DVD helps putting it all together. **

I only studied Jow Ga Kung-Fu for 2.5 years but everything I learned is in this book plus more! Mr. Wheeler explains that there exist variations of the "Heart of Jow Ga" for Small Controlling Small Tiger Fist. The version I learned has about 3-4 minor differences but is the same series of sequences. This form is applicable and great for building strength and flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. The book is a good starting point in learning Chinese martial arts and if have the opportunity to study Jow Ga Kung-Fu in the US. The footwork, hand striking and application can be used to broaden any practitioners' skills in the martial arts.

Mr. Wheeler gives an important message at the concluding chapters of his book. He provides a humble and modest message that reflects what martial arts truly represents. Mr. Wheeler has provided the martial arts community/library with a valuable piece of knowledge to a not well-known kung-fu system. Jow Ga is not a widely known kung-fu system but is highly effective in its entirety. Hands down a great book!

Modern Japanese art at its finest

It's a pity this appears to be currently out of print. It's a wonderful collection of Shinoda's works (the only one I know of). Her prints display a wonderful simplicity and balance combined with rich textures and subtle shades teased from the ink (mostly duotone prints with a few extra final strokes with a brush to finish). A must-have for anyone who enjoys modern Japanese art.

A really good treatment of a complex history

This book does an excellent overview job on the "big picture" of the growth and development of Karate, including how it has spread in the United States. Some of the statements about other martial arts reflect some small bias on the part of the author, but that is minor and understandable. The book serves to answer most basic questions a reader might have, like "Who first taught this-or-that", or "Where was the first school?" and things like that. I don't mean to imply that this book is basic, or superficial. The history is complete and detailed, and covers a large time period. Any dojo owner or teacher out there needs to read this book to intelligently answer questions raised by students and lay people.

Martial Arts content and education has changed so much over the last, say, fifteen years that this book serves as the model for other studies that need to be made. The book is readable without sacrificing accuracy or clarity, complete, coherent (i.e., it keeps its focus consistently), and logically arranged. Anyone that wants to publish work that amplifies or follows up this work would do well to study its composition. Thank goodness this history was compiled when it was, before so much could be lost or forgotten.

A believable source for MA history

Martial Arts history is so intertwined with myth and legend, that its hard to separate true historical facts. This book does a good job of pointing out when parts of the traditional history are likely to be just fictional, yet also pays respect to a very eastern perspective; sometimes myth represents better the essence of the idea than a myriad of facts, which are by nature, disjoint and subjective.
