Not particularly useful
By Paul Jorgensen
I'm a little bit bewildered by the 5 star rating that the previous reviewers have given this book. I found it to be a jumble of example phrases thrown together with little structure, that doesn't help you to build a solid base for understanding Kansai dialect. It serves more as a Kansai-ben phrasebook to flip through and hopeful pick up a few scraps of knowledge along the way.

One thing that I need to point out is that the Kansai language listed in this book is low down dirty pure Kansai-ben, and from reading this book you may get the impression that people actually speak like that. They don't. Almost everybody under say, age 65, tempers their speech with Standard Japanese and many of the structures and words in this book are almost entirely out of use.

In terms of structure and organization the book is hard to follow. There are a number of topic-based sections, like 'Food and Drink', 'Feeling sick', and 'Family Talk'. That's not a bad idea, but within each section the reader is bombarded with a bunch of seemingly random phrases given in both Western (Kansai)Japanese and Eastern (Tokyo) Japanese. Rather than a bunch of short phrases and brief exchanges, I would have benefited more from longer dialogues which demonstrate a few main characteristics of Kansai Japanese. There are some such dialogues in the book, and they're much more meaningful and memorable than the short phrases. Also, much of the vocabulary used in the example phrases is uncommon and unnecessary, and just adds to the feeling of randomness.

The book does have interesting sections describing traditional (ie.not spoken much anymore but very well known) Kyoto Japanese, traditional Osaka Japanese, and Hiroshima Japanese. These sections seem more focused than the topic-based sections, with the example sentences more clearly demonstrating the characteristics of the dialect rather than simply giving the reader a pile of phrasebook listings.

This book is somewhat interesting to read through and you can get a little bit of a better sense of the difference between Eastern and Western Japanese from the examples given. But it lacks the structure needed to help the reader gain a solid base for understanding Kansai dialect. I found that 'Kinki Japanese' (recently renamed to 'Colloquial Kansai Japanese') by D.C. Palter and Kaoru Slotsve did a much better job of that.

A great read, and informative
By A Customer
Typically, a proper review should wait until you've read a few books on a certain subject and are able to properly compare all the books about that subject to each other.

... So I say, but really, since when do you see books around about Kansai-ben? Maybe I'm just not looking around enough, but I've only found two English books on Kansai-ben (this being one of them). So a word of advice: if you're looking for books on Kansai-ben, grab 'em when you get your first chance!

Anyway, as far as the book goes, it has a leaning towards example phrases. There are many for use and study in this book, and the author does us all a great favor by not only presenting these in regular Kansai-ben with the obligatory English translation, but by also giving us the translation into regular Tokyou-ben. Of course, all the proper explanations to follow these examples are provided. All chapters end with a dialogue, summing up the content of the chapter quite neatly. It should also be noted that although all text in this book is in romaji (Japanese spelled with the English alphabet), the words and phrases used in this book dictate that you have a working knowledge of Japanese words and grammar already - vocabulary and grammar (and thus, sentence deconstruction) is left primarily to the reader. As an aside, I personally prefer regular Japanese script with furigana, especially when the book is directed towards those who should already know some basic Japanese, but that's just me.

As the chapters progress, this book covers basic Kansai-ben, then moves to cover each of three regions with three chapters (Kyouto, Hiroshima, and Oosaka). From there, it moves towards macho-man speak and curses, then to the cool little colloquial words and phrases to talk people (or things) down or up.
Of the whole book though, I found the last chapter particularly interesting. "Kansai Grammar and Special Expressions" is its title, and it essentially distills much of the grammar work you'd ever want to make into one concise, easy to understand chapter. It gives many abbreviations of certain Japanese constructions and explanations on the use of certain particles in Kansai-ben.
About the only thing that I'd actually wish for more of is more detailed explanations and perhaps some examples and phrases that deconstruct the grammar and words used (not too many though, as I realize how tedious it can be). And, of course, Japanese text.

However, such complaints are really minor ones - as far as books go, this one's pretty solid, informative, and interesting. It's very reassuring that even though there's only an Okinawa-sized island of books about Kansai-ben in a sea of other books regarding Japanese language and culture, there's at least one thing there that makes it worth stopping by.

Well structured and INTERESTING
By Kitsuno
This is one of the best books on Kansai Japanese. It is very structured, and can help you learn to understand - and speak the Kansai dialect. The pronounciation is different from standard Japanese, so i'd recomend using the book more so you can understand it rather than speak it, but anyway, it is filled with examples and situations, using dialogs in English, 'standard' Japanese, and 'kansai' Japanese. Learn Japanese the way it was supposed to be spoken! After all, if the capital hadn't been moved to Tokyo, this might have BEEN the standard.

Lovely!
By J. L. Peter
What a beautiful book!

I wanted to reach out and touch the textiles inside. It's humbling to know that "they" could create such glorious fabrics and clothing long before the invention of all our high-tech machinery and hyper-marketed "designer" creations.

The history of who wore what (and why) is fascinating. If you're interested in fashion and textiles and/or enjoy history and/or have an interest in China - I suspect that you'll enjoy this book. Stick it beside your bed or near the sofa, as it's a fun book for browsing.

By the way, I don't know the author (though I wish I did) and I don't have any relationship with the publisher, etc. I just liked the book - which I bought for myself. Soon after, I ran out and bought 2 more for Christmas gifts.

From an American in Singapore.

Beautiful book
By Crusader70
Generation gaps are a fact of modern life, but nowhere have they been as wide or frequent as in China, where nearly every decade has seen Chinese society remade to an astonishing extent. One area in which these enormous political and social changes can be traced is in clothing: from dragon robes to cheongsams, Mao suits to Yves Saint Laurent, garments tell the story of China's modern history.

Valery Garrett, the author of eight previous books on the subject and a doyenne of the field, is well placed to trace that fascinating evolution. In Chinese Dress: From the Qing Dynasty to the Present, she has produced her magnum opus.

Qing dress was about rank and control: one could gauge exactly where a subject stood in the imperial, civil, military or social hierarchy by a quick and careful study of robe, hat and accessories (designer handbags not yet having been invented). A massive work of regulations and penalties on the subject was promulgated by the Qianlong Emperor to ensure that Manchu customs were not "subsumed and diluted by Chinese ways." Using the first of more than five hundred gorgeous, mostly colour, illustrations, Chinese Dress explains how to "read" such key exemplars of this system as embroidered "dragon robes" and "mandarin squares." A rich resource for the experienced scholar, these chapters will open the eyes of those new to the intricacies of imperial dress in a way akin to first learning characters.

With much talk of cuffs and vamps and hems, a book so specialized runs the risk of glazing the eyes of the sartorially clueless, but the veteran author wisely spices the narrative with both the Chinese history needed to place the fashions in context and many interesting asides. Thus the perennially fascinating practice of footbinding is explored in every disturbing detail: braided ankle covers, hidden heel supports and puttees just part of the paraphernalia required.

The focus of Chinese Dress, however, and where it breaks new ground, is 20th-century fashion and the dramatic political and social changes that shaped its evolution. This second half of the book draws on the author's explorations in '70 and `80s New Territories Hong Kong, and her interest in the dress and culture of ordinary people; the garments and accessories collected during these efforts now reside at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

A short review can only hint at the contents of Chinese Dress. Wedding, military and peasant attire, hats, shoes, jewelry and accessories are all discussed and illustrated in sumptuous detail. Children's wear, with its focus on "locking the child to the earth" and protecting him (too rarely her) from theft by evil spirits is particularly fascinating: so too the culture's elaborate funerary practices.

Chinese Dress is a beautifully presented and accessible work of scholarship that retells the remarkable story of China's modern transformation from a unique perspective.

A comprehensive work on Chinese textiles in the last Dynasty of China and the early 20th Century which is profusely illustrated. It is an excellent book for any collector or person interested in this field.
Highly recommended. This book doesn't repeat information which has been previously published but gives a fresh view.

Yagyu was a renowned swordsman and chief of the Shogun's secret police, while Takuan was the Zen spiritual mentor to the Emperor. This samurai philosophy book contains the first English translations of their seminal writings on Bushido. Cleary not only provides clear and readable translations but comprehensive notes introducing the social, political, and organizational principles that defined Samurai culture—their loyalty to family, their sense of service and duty, and their political strategies for dealing with allies and enemies.

These writings introduce the reader to the authentic world of Zen culture and the secrets behind the Samurai's success—being "in the moment" and freeing the mind from all distractions, allowing you to react instantaneously and instinctively without thinking. In these classic works we learn that Zen mental control and meditational training were as important to the Samurai as swordsmanship and fighting skills.

Excellent format with useful commentary
By Timothy George Roettiger/Belgian Mare Brewery
"Soul of the Samurai" contains the translations of three classic texts: Martial Arts: The Book of Family Traditions, The Inscrutable Subtlety Of Immovable Wisdom, and Tai-A Ki: Notes on the Peerless Sword. The introduction does a good job of providing context for the translations. The books themselves are rendered in an easy reading literary style, with intra-textual commentary. Some readers may feel that this disrupts the flow of the text, but I found that the commentaries were quite helpful. The translator does a good job of placing the commentaries in locations where the modern western reader is likely to have difficulty. So rather than disrupt the text, they aid the reader's understanding and keep the flow going, rather than forcing the reader to choose between stumbling on in confusion or flipping to the back for end-notes.

Overall, I found this collection full of insightful wisdom and a joy to read.

Global Responses to Maritime Violence: Cooperation and Collective ActionFrom Stanford Security Studies

Global Responses to Maritime Violence is a full discussion of maritime security short of war that goes beyond the current literature in both scope and perspective. The chapters in this volume examine terrorism, piracy, armed robbery at sea, illegal maritime trafficking, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes. Contributors uncover both threats and responses as a complex ecosystem that challenges even the strongest national and regional institutions. Managing this system is a "wicked problem" that has no ultimate solution. But the book offers strategic precepts to guide the efforts of any government that seeks to improve its responses to maritime violence.

The bottom line is that maritime violence can be managed effectively enough to protect citizens and national economies that depend on the sea. Comprehensive in scope, the volume coheres around the premise that good governance in the maritime domain, though difficult, is worth the considerable resources required.

The Book of Tea: The Illustrated Classic Edition, by Kakuzo Okakura

In 1906 in turn-of-the century Boston, a small, esoteric book about tea was written with the intention of being read aloud in the famous salon of Isabella Gardner. It was authored by Okakura Kakuzo, a Japanese philosopher, art expert, and curator. Little known at the time, Kakuzo would emerge as one of the great thinkers of the early 20th century, a genius who was insightful, witty and greatly responsible for bridging Western and Eastern cultures. Nearly a century later, Kakuzo's The Book of Tea is still beloved the world over. In this edition, readers are treated to Kakuzo's delicious wisdom along with evocative quadratone photographs in an exquisite new package. Interwoven with a rich history of tea and its place in Japanese society is poignant commentary on Eastern culture and our ongoing fascination with it, as well as illuminating essays on art, spirituality, poetry, and more. The Book of Tea is a delightful cup of enlightenment from a man far ahead of his time.

Review

"Beautifully written." -- Boston Globe

“How does one improve on a classic? Exquisite photography, a new thoughtful introduction, and expanded size . . . A perfect gift.” -- Tea Talk

About the Author
Okakura Kakuzo (1862-1913) devoted his life to teaching, art, Zen, and the preservation of Japanese art and culture, working as an ambassador, teacher, writer, and, at the time of his death, as the Curator fo Chinese and Japanese Art at the Boston Museum.

Liza Dalby has lived intermittently in Japan since she was a teenager. She is the first non-Japanese ever to have become a geisha. She received a PhD in anthropology from Stanford University in 1978 and is the author of several books, including Geisha, and the upcoming Tale of Murasaki.

THE CUP OF HUMANITY

Tea began as a medicine and grew into a beverage. In China, in the eighth century, it entered the realm of poetry as one of the polite amusements. The fifteenth century saw Japan ennoble it into a religion of aestheticism-Teaism. Teaism is a cult founded on the adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday existence. It inculcates purity and harmony, the mystery of mutual charity, the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life.

The Philosophy of Tea is not mere aestheticism in the ordinary acceptance of the term, for it expresses conjointly with ethics and religion our whole point of view about man and nature. It is hygiene, for it enforces cleanliness; it is economics, for it shows comfort in simplicity rather than in the complex and costly; it is moral geometry, inasmuch as it defines our sense of proportion to the universe. It represents the true spirit of Eastern democracy by making all its votaries aristocrats in taste.

The long isolation of Japan from the rest of the world, so conducive to introspection, has been highly favourable to the development of Teaism. Our home and habits, costume and cuisine, porcelain, lacquer, painting-our very literature-all have been subject to its influence. No student of Japanese culture could ever ignore its presence. It has permeated the elegance of noble boudoirs, and entered the abode of the humble. Our peasants have learned to arrange flowers, our meanest labourer to offer his salutation to the rocks and waters. In our common parlance we speak of the man "with no tea" in him, when he is insusceptible to the serio-comic interests of the personal drama. Again we stigmatise the untamed aesthete who, regardless of the mundane tragedy, runs riot in the springtide of emancipated emotions, as one "with too much tea" in him.

The outsider may indeed wonder at this seeming much ado about nothing. What a tempest in a tea-cup! he will say. But when we consider how small after all the cup of human enjoyment is, how soon overflowed with tears, how easily drained to the dregs in our quenchless thirst for infinity, we shall not blame ourselves for making so much of the tea-cup. Mankind has done worse. In the worship of Bacchus, we have sacrificed too freely; and we have even transfigured the gory image of Mars. Why not consecrate ourselves to the queen of the Camelias, and revel in the warm stream of sympathy that flows from her altar? In the liquid amber within the ivory-porcelain, the initiated may touch the sweet reticence of Confucius, the piquancy of Laotse, and the ethereal aroma of Sakyamuni himself.

Those who cannot feel the littleness of great things in themselves are apt to overlook the greatness of little things in others. The average Westerner, in his sleek complacency, will see in the tea ceremony but another instance of the thousand and one oddities which constitute the quaintness and childishness of the East to him. He was wont to regard Japan as barbarous while she indulged in the gentle arts of peace: he calls her civilised since she began to commit wholesale slaughter on Manchurian battlefields. Much comment has been given lately to the Code of the Samurai,-the Art of Death which makes our soldiers exult in self-sacrifice; but scarcely any attention has been drawn to Teaism, which represents so much of our Art of Life. Fain would we remain barbarians, if our claim to civilisation were to be based on the gruesome glory of war. Fain would we await the time when due respect shall be paid to our art and ideals.

a jewel by a giant
By Jerry Q. Winle
i read this book in preparation for participating in a japanese culture class for japanese 6th graders. i had heard of the book, but avoided it for a long time due to my assumptions about the book being just another new age-y trend that exoticizes "eastern culture".
however, when i actually sat down and delved into the book, i was thrilled. this little volume on tea is really a special book, for all the reasons other reviewers give and so much more.
but the book has become detached from its author, which is a shame, because okakura was/is a major figure in a very important period of time.
like today, the meiji period in which okakura lived was a time of extreme westernization in japan. okakura was a giant in the struggle to keep japanese culture alive, primarily through the arts. okakura was also one of the first and biggest presenters of japanese culture to the west. the book of tea is a fantastic example of the way in which cultures that are unfamiliar with one another's practices, mindsets, and histories can have meaningful exchanges without reducing the other side to exotic stereotypes. though okakura was japanese, this book was originally written in english soon after okakura joined the staff at the boston museum of art.
everyone should read this book. okakura's gem is much more a philosophy book along the lines of deleuze and guattari than it is a book about "tea" or "buddhism". this is a book that has no fear in treading into many different realms, and many of its cultural critiques of both "the west" and japan resonate profoundly in the today's world. it has been translated into scores of languages, including japanese. in fact, it is probably the japanese that would benefit most from reading the book of tea.

I loved this new edition and thought that the photographs were beautiful, capturing the essences of tea and giving examples( a rare thing) of actual tea implements. Unlike the reviewer who couldn't even leave a name who probably has no concept of the world of tea, I thought that the format also followed the ideals of tea by being contemporary and in the constantly evolving path of tea as given to us by Oiemoto (the current head of the Urasenke tea school). I enjoyed this book very much and have given several copies to my tea students and tea friends as well.

Brillant and beatifully written
By Robin Spencer
I bought this classic book of tea, thinking it was about... tea. It was, well the first half. But the last half had chapters on flowers, art and religion. Brilliant and beautifully written almost, well not almost, it was poetry. Written by a compassionate insightful man, I will never be able to look at flowers or art or interior design the same again.
A bargain at any price, but 99 cents from Amazon on my Kindle.

A must read for any serious Martial Artist
By James L. Whelan
An 8th degree black belt, Master Tabata is the founder and head of the North American Karate-do Foundation - NAKF, in 1967, as well as of the New England Collegiate Karate Conference - NECKC, in 1968.

He is in direct line from the founder of the Shotokan style, Master Gichin Funakoshi. His teacher, Master Iso Obata, was one of Gichin Funakoshi's first students and the first chairman of the Japan Karate Association.

Master Tabata was sent from Japan to promote Karate in North America in late 60's. He has done so most effectively, building a large Karate organization in the North East. He was captain of the US Karate team for two decades, representing the US at many international tournaments. In addition, he was technical advisor to the US National Olympic Committee.

My job has taken me around the world and I have studied in and run school in several countries. Tabata is the best Karate instructor I have ever come across.
