The Dream of the Red Chamber (Tuttle Classics), by Cao Xueqin

The Dream of the Red Chamber is one of the "Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature." It is renowned for its huge scope, large cast of characters and telling observations on the life and social structures of 18th century China and is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the classical Chinese novel.

The "Red Chamber" is an expression used for the sheltered area where the daughters of wealthy Chinese families lived. Believed to be based on the author's own life and intended as a memorial to the women that he knew in his youth, The Dream of the Red Chamber is a multilayered story that offers up key insights into Chinese culture.

"Henry Bencraft Joly's attention to detail and the faithfulness in his translation of Hong Lou Meng makes this revised edition of The Dream of the Red Chamber an excellent book for the student of modern Chinese." —Edwin H. Lowe, from his introduction

"…this partial version certainly deserves a wider readership, as a brave early skirmish on the outer ramparts of this masterpiece. The re-issuing of Joly's work will undoubtedly provide a rich crop of fascinating raw material for the growing community of Translation Studies scholars." —John Minford, from his foreword

Half the dream
By Allen P. Chase
Truth in advertising should, I believe, dictate that potential buyers be aware of two issues with this book: First, the book may have been recently published, but the translation goes back to two turns of the century ago. That's not a bad thing, but the buyer should know that this is not even close to a recent translation. Second, this book is not the whole book. It actually contains less than half of "The Dream of the Red Chamber," and abruptly breaks off leaving the reader suspended with nowhere to go. That's not necessarily bad either if only we were told that this was the case, but we are not. If you want the whole story, this is not the book for you.

Best forgotten
By NeverneverLand
Joly's was the first substantial translation of the classic Chinese novel "Dream of the Red Chamber", now reissued by Tuttle, lightly revised (or so it seems). However - and this is a big however - while the translation is relatively free from major errors, it has a nauseatingly crabbed and archaic style which makes understanding a near-impossibility. The thous and whithers and whenceforths are not excised from this text. Now that we have the David Hawkes/John Minford Penguin translation and the Yangs' more literal version, Joly's version can safely be binned. If you are curious about this version, Joly's 56 chapters are all available at the Gutenberg website.

Hard to get through
By Cynthia Dumarin
This is a tough read. It is apparently a well known book in China, but in translation it is nearly incomprehensible.

The Slow Boil: Street Food, Rights and Public Space in Mumbai (South Asia in Motion), by Jonathan Anjaria

Street food vendors are both a symbol and a scourge of Mumbai: cheap roadside snacks are enjoyed by all, but the people who make them dance on a razor's edge of legality. While neighborhood associations want the vendors off cluttered sidewalks, many Mumbaikers appreciate the convenient bargains they offer. In The Slow Boil, Jonathan Shapiro Anjaria draws on his long-term fieldwork with these vendors to make sense of the paradoxes within the city and, thus, to create a better understanding of urban space in general.

Much urban studies literature paints street vendors either as oppressed and marginalized victims or as inventive premoderns. In contrast, Anjaria acknowledges that diverse political, economic, historic, and symbolic processes create contradictions in the vendors' everday lives, like their illegality and proximity to the state, and their insecurity and permanence. Mumbai's disorderly sidewalks reflect the simmering tensions over livelihood, democracy, and rights that are central to the city but have long been overlooked. In The Slow Boil, these issues are not subsumed into a larger framework, but are explored on their own terms.

Review
"A must-read for anyone who wants to understand the contested local forms of participation in the creation of global urbanisms. Theoretically sophisticated and historically informed, Anjaria's sensitive ethnography shows that the lives of urban street hawkers are characterized not by transience and distance, but by deep relationships with the state."—Lisa Mitchell, University of Pennsylvania

"In this highly readable book, Anjaria demonstrates the power of ethnography to go beyond universalist arguments about neoliberal displacement of the poor from the city. What he offers us instead is finely-observed data that compels surprising arguments about the nature of citizenship and informality in the megalopolis of Mumbai."—Akhil Gupta, University of California, Los Angeles

"Is street vending Mumbai's lifeblood or affliction? This question animates the battles over space and rights in Anjaria's book. A compelling treatise against dystopic urban theory and determinist readings of the law, this rich ethnography illuminates Mumbai as a terrain of spirited maneuver, rather than outright exclusion."—Ajantha Subramanian, Harvard University

The Heredity of Taste (Tuttle Classics of Japanese Literature), by Soseki Natsume

Still timely after nearly half a century, The Heredity of Taste is Soseki Natsume’s only antiwar work. The heartbreaking story of love shattered by the realities of battle reveals Soseki’s attitude toward the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–5.

Sadness About The Loss of Life & The Loss Of Individuality.
By Anna B. Paesler
This book is not as intense as Natsume's book, "Kokoro", which I read before this one, but it is a good insight into Natsume's opinion about war. The lack of intensity may be because he wrote this book in only eight days, and it is a short composition. However, Natsume does convey the sadness of the loss of life and the loss of individuality unequivocably within this book. The narrator has lost his friend, Ko-san, in a war, and his heart-sickness is conveyed emphatically by his repetition of variations of one sentence, "...Ko-san jumped into his trench, he has never come out again." He even ends the book with that sentence among his last paragraph. Also, Natsume laments the whole idea of war when he states, "War, when it does not kill people, ages them." Beyond the narrator's grieving of the death of his young friend, Ko-san, the narrator despairs the loss of individuality that war brings about. He stated, "...facing the shells that spat out of the guns and roared through the air, even the greatest of men like Ko-san was no longer apparent. He became as insignificant as a grain of soya in a straw bag." Although the narrator knows that his friend died due to the war, he bemoans "Ah, Ko-san! Where are you?" It is sad. The narrator is mournful for the mother of Ko-san, too, as Ko-san was her only child and never had the opportunity to marry his love interest, detailed in the latter half of the book, before he went off to war for Japan. Lastly, Natsume uses "Macbeth" to help illuminate his ideas at around the middle of the book, and this is probably from Natsume's time in England, where he studied great English authors of the time. Although this book is not as intense as Natsume's book, "Kokoro", it, nevertheless, is an interesting read to get to know Soseki Natsume, and war does produce "many deceased names."

Superb Soseki but Somewhat Superfluous
By Crazy Fox
Well, first things first, I'm not quite sure what the good folks at Tuttle were thinking when they published this book. Not that it's not a worthwhile title, mind you. Natsume Soseki was definitely one of the finest authors of the twentieth century, and any work by him is welcome; indeed, "The Heredity of Taste" is one of his more minor pieces but it too certainly has much that's interesting about it. However, it's already available by Tuttle, as one of three works included in one volume: "Ten Nights of Dream/Hearing Things/The Heredity of Taste", translated by Aiko Ito and Graeme Wilson. Despite the fine work that he's done so far in making much of Soseki's lesser-known works and memoirs available in English, Sammy Tsunematsu's translation here seems just a tad redundant. Both versions have their ups and downs, of course. Tsunematsu's rendering is sometimes a bit wooden and stilted, Ito & Wilson's a bit more flowingly natural and idiomatic, but Tsunematsu is often a bit more accurate whereas Ito & Wilson sometimes fudge things a bit. Pick your poison, I guess.

Perhaps in today's political climate (on both sides of the Pacific) Tuttle and Tsunematsu wanted to emphasize Soseki's attitudes to war as expressed herein. And certainly these are worth considering. To categorize this piece as "anti-war literature" (as Stephen Kohl does in the Intro) may perhaps be just a tad too cut-and-dried, but Soseki is very clearly evoking for his readers the dreadful costs of war in a serious manner at a time when hysteric triumphalism was more the norm. In a subtle fashion and with doses of typical Sosekian humor to sweeten the medicine dose, he uses his incredible skills as an author to make very concrete and palpable those ugly aspects of warfare its supporters would rather not consider: the loss of irreplaceable lives, the irreversible physical and psychological damage, and the leveling of human individuality and dignity. All of this in a way that is personal and genuine.

Still, this was all in the prior publication (which is still in print, last I checked) along with two other equally interesting works. That may be a better deal for your money if you're a Soseki fan, though if your interest is exclusively with literary treatments of the issue of war, then this little tome will do the trick.

The Tale of Genji (Tuttle Classics), by Murasaki Shikibu, Kencho Suematsu

The most famous work of Japanese literature and the world's first novel—written a thousand years ago and one of the enduring classics of world literature.

Written centuries before the time of Shakespeare and even Chaucer, The Tale of Genji marks the birth of the novel—and after more than a millennium, this seminal work continues to enchant readers throughout the world. Lady Murasaki Shikibu and her tale's hero, Prince Genji, have had an unmatched influence on Japanese culture. Prince Genji manifests what was to become an image of the ideal Heian era courtier; gentle and passionate. Genji is also a master poet, dancer, musician and painter. The Tale of Genji follows Prince Genji through his many loves, and varied passions. This book has influenced not only generations of courtiers and samurai of the distant past, but artists and painters even in modern times—episodes in the tale have been incorporated into the design of kimonos and handicrafts, and the four-line poems called waka which dance throughout this work have earned it a place as a classic text in the study of poetry.

This version by Kencho Suematsu was the first-ever translation in English. Condensed, it's a quarter length of the unabridged text, making it perfect for readers with limited time.

"Not speaking is the wiser part,
And words are sometimes vain,
But to completely close the heart
In silence, gives me pain.

—Prince Genji, in The Tale of Genji

The most elegant translation
By Amazonian
The Tale of Genji boasts rights as the first novel ever written, but the road getting here has been rough. The novel is nearly a millenium old, and a translation usually has to go through two hands (the Japanese translator and the English) before we have the pleasure of reading.

The first translation, by Arthur Waley, reads beautifully and still holds a place in many fans' hearts. It has also been liberally edited and sometimes loosely translated; one wonders how much of the original work remains.

Two recent translations compete for top honors. The more recent one, by Royall Tyler, boasts helpful footnotes and background notes. It also takes great pains to render the novel in stylistic terms that are very close to the original. At the same time, it can be hard to follow at times, since many of Shikibu's authorial conventions have been preserved.

Edward Siedensticker offers good accuracy, with prose that's elegant and precise. He really excels with the book's frequent poetry; his translations are the best in English. While his complete translation is true, he doesn't take Tyler's cares to translate Shikibu's stylistic quirks. His translation is, then, more immediately readable. But more footnotes wouldn't have been a hindrance.

I admire Royal Tyler's achievement, but I enjoy Siedensticker's. Perhaps the best course of action is to read both (if you have the time). Otherwise, it may be a good idea to compare passages and see which you prefer. In either case, Siedensticker's poems are indispensible.

Kindle Edition is NOT the Waley Translation
By Remi Fasolati
This Kindle edition is a translation by Kencho Suematsu, NOT Arthur Waley, and I would not recommend it to anyone who wants to read The Tale of Genji. There are far far better translations available. The Kindle version is falsely labeled, in my opinion.

Not the translation advertised; also abridged
By Benjamin Venable
This is not the translation advertised in the description; it is an older translation. Also this version is abridged, which should be noted in the description. If you're looking for a complete translation, this ain't it. :(

"Katie Chin has done us all a huge favor: she's provided us with recipes for so many of the Chinese dishes we always wanted to cook but have never had clear and easy instructions to prepare…Thank you Katie Chin!" —Martha Stewart

Home chefs will enjoy preparing these Chinese home cooking-inspired dishes with this easy-to-follow Chinese cookbook.

Author Katie Chin's love of cooking blossomed at an early age—watching and later helping her renowned mother, Leeann Chin, prepare delicious Chinese dishes in her popular restaurants. Born in China, Leeann was an award-winning restaurateur and author revered for her ability to demystify Chinese cooking for the American home cook. Katie inherited her mom's passion and talent, and has become a respected food writer and television personality in her own right. Sadly, Leeann passed away in 2010, but her recipes live on. Katie is eager to share her mother's food legacy with you in this book—an homage to Leeann's mastery of all that Chinese cooking has to offer.

This treasury of family recipes includes many unique dishes that Leeann developed during a six-decade career in the food business, including time-honored classics that she herself learned from her mother in China. Some dishes reflect Leeann's Chinese-American childhood or are recipes which Katie and Leeann developed while together. Others are creations that Katie has developed more recently. Woven throughout the book are fond memories and anecdotes from Katie's childhood, always involving cooking and eating with her mom.

Katie Chin's Everyday Chinese Cooking is a celebration of Leeann Chin's amazing mastery of the complete array of flavors and techniques in Chinese cuisine, and her unique ability to make them accessible to Westerners. Katie provides tips and techniques which allow anyone to create a refined and tasty Chinese meal at home.

Favorite Chinese recipes include:

  • Firecracker Shrimp
  • Mu Shu Pork
  • Peking Duck Summer Rolls
  • General Tso's Chicken

Asian cuisine is my absolute favorite. But admittedly
By Amazon Customer
Asian cuisine is my absolute favorite. But admittedly, I was very intimidated to cook dishes on my own...until now. Katie Chin's recipes are easy to follow making these dishes approachable yet authentic. There is a very helpful section highlighting all of the key Chinese ingredients you need to know as well as basic cooking techniques. I've tried many of Katie's delicious recipes and all have been welcomed with rave reviews from friends and family. Firecracker shrimp, Canton-style chow mein and glazed salmon have become regulars in my kitchen which was once devoid of any Chinese creations. Katie also weaves in wonderful and personal anecdotes that will keep you entertained throughout the entire book. Highly recommend!

Great for beginners!
By William Peebles
The recipes were easy enough for a great meal. I like to cook and enjoy Chinese food, however I don't trust restaurants to not use msg. So after my wife's urging I purchased a 16" wok and dove in.
Now that I'm comfortable with the various spices and sauces my backyard chef personality just wings it most of the time.
Katie and her mom are inspiring ladies. I enjoyed the family story she shares as well.
I highly recommend this book for an introduction to good Chinese dishes.

Flying Star Feng Shui, by Stephen Skinner

Flying Star Feng Shui adds a new "time dimension" to feng shui practice reflecting the fact that the subtle energies present in our living environment are constantly changing.

The flying star combinations make it possible to respond to-or prepare for-these changing energy "situations." These methods produce impressive and rapid results and can both shorten periods of bad luck, while initiating or prolonging periods of good fortune. These concepts have previously been available only from a few untranslated or highly technical sources.

Author Stephen Skinner has a international reputation as a populizer of feng shui concepts for Western readers. In Flying Star Feng Shui he introduces one of the most effective and popular aspects of feng shui practice today.

Rich & Rewarding! A must-have for any student of feng shui!
By Elizabeth Moran
There's a method of traditional feng shui called Flying Star. For the uninitiated, it's akin to knowing the astrology of your home: the probability of auspicious or inauspicious health-, wealth-, and relationship-related events occuring within your living and/or working space. Flying Star is a numbers game. The year your home was built along with the building's directionality produces a numeric qi map. The configuration of numbers tell you what's going on now and what can possibly happen in the future. Once you know the numbers that correlate with a specific area within your home, you then set about enhancing good prospects and discouraging the bad ones. How? Well, you'll have to read the book! I'm a big fan of Stephen Skinner's work. In this book, he begins with the fundamentals of Chinese cosmology. Then, step-by-step, he shows you how to perform a Flying Star audit. The information is clear, concise, and very well written and illustrated.

A good addition to your feng shui library
By Theresa Reed
I bought this book a few weeks ago and have been going through it very slowly. There is a lot of information here. You need to digest it a bit at a time, rather than plough through it.
Stephen Skinner gives detailed information - he covers the theories, formulas, interpretations and room by room analysis thoroughly. He also includes fascinating history on feng shui - making this more than a 'how to' book. I also like the fact that he explains the "wild stars" such as the Grand Duke Jupiter. Other feng shui books were sometimes not very clear on these and his explanations really helped me to understand them better.
Lots of great charts in here, plus an excellent appendix with information on Chinese Dynasties and Feng Shui Chronology and more! His list of the typical analysis sequence in the back also gives a great idea of what to include in a feng shui diagnosis.
I would definitely recommend this book. Add the following books, and your feng shui library is complete:
The Complete Idiots Guide to Feng Shui by Moran and Yu
Principles of Feng Shui by Larry Sang
A Master Course in Feng Shui by Eva Wong

Exactly what I was looking for!
By Alice
This isn't the easiest book to either read or understand, but there's an incredibly amount of information packed into a relatively small book.

I don't think this is a very good first book for Feng Shui, but it's a great great library addition! I too would recommend The Idiot's Guide to Feng Shui for a first introduction. THEN buy this book, as it adds to it by quite a bit.

I wish there were a stronger focus on remedies, I have yet to find a feng shui book that covers all the potential remedies for all the different circumstance. Every Feng Shui book spends a huge part in the beginning explaining Feng Shui... if you are a total beginner, a book of this type won't make sense anyway, fast intro notwithstanding. If you are not, it's just wasted pages, because every book covers the intro over and over again.

I'm still looking for that perfect book that dispenses with the Feng Shui intros and leads right into remedies... ie., the Host/Guest relationship in this book uses as it's only example a positive positive. What happens when you have a 6M 5T 4W combo in a critically active office? What do you do? I have yet to see a single book that answers this (if any readers can answer this, please email me!). I give it a 5, because it's the most comprehensive book of 5 I own on the subject next to the Idiot's Guide.
