About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist for decades, and is considered a leading authority and master of the art. An avid teacher, LaFosse co-founded the Origamido Studio, a learning center and design studio dedicated to the art of origami, and the only place in the world specializing in hand papermaking for the origami artist. LaFosse co-curated Origami Now!, a wildly popular, year-long exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. He was also prominently featured in the recent, Peabody Award-winning film, Between the Folds, by Vanessa Gould.

Great designs, nice format, excellent price for value

I purchased this kit for the book, and was happily surprised by the quality of the paper included -- all two-colored, with solids and patterns, and larger than the 6" "standard" origami paper. Nice!

The real reason to purchase this kit is THE BOOK. This is best for those who are not exactly "beginner" origami folders, but "beginner-intermediate" -- they know they like folding, aren't ready yet for the really complex stuff, and have grown tired of the same-old traditional folds. This book has, in compact but clearly-diagrammed format, Michael G. LaFosse's bird, animal, and fish folds which I'd only previously found in his kids' Step By Step series (and good luck finding those outside a library). The presentation is straightforward to appeal to adults while being appealing, colorful, and friendly. Many of the designs -are- the author's unique creations, and one should not let their apparent simplicity mislead one into thinking them uninteresting. This is not meant to be sculpture-type origami, but the simpler sort which evokes the creature represented rather than perfectly replicating it with a paper model. The charm of origami animals is here in full!

I bought this kit for myself, but it would make an excellent gift for an adult or child who likes origami or likes animals and crafts. The book, with the paper, makes an excellent value, and the box presentation is bright and festive.

I bought this book so I can share the Malaysian folklore I grew up with, with my own children, who are half-American. I'm grateful to the author for compiling these stories in English they can be passed on from people like me to their own children, who hopefully, will appreciate this part of their cultural heritage. Two of these stories (The Princess of Mount Ledang and The Youngest Princess) were also told frequently through plays and theatrical performances in Malaysia. This book is a wonderful collection of stories for children from all backgrounds.

Not for the beginner -incomplete and misleading

This book is certainly not a complete guide. If you buy just one book on oriental rugs this should not be the one. It is overly simplistic in some area and overly detailed in others.

It is neither a good book on new rugs nor of antique rugs as it is quite outdated. Still if you have a collection of rug books already and know the subject well some nuggets of information can be gleaned from this book.

William McNaughton was the founding teacher of Chinese at Oberlin College. From 1986 he taught at Kong Kong's City University, where he was the founding program leader of the BA (Honors) program in Translation and Interpretation. He now lives in retirement in Hong Kong.

A good list of characters, not a good standalone resource

I started learning to write Chinese by working my way through this book, memorizing the characters, pronunciation, and definitions. Now I sort of regret it. The list of characters is reasonable enough. If your goal is to memorize a bunch of characters, these are good ones to concentrate on, and they're generally presented in a reasonable order. The stroke order diagrams are helpful when you're first starting out, and it isn't a problem that they're only present for the first half of the list of characters; by the time you finish the part of the book with the diagrams, you will have long since developed a good intuitive sense of the stroke order rules.

Unfortunately, beyond the selection of characters and the diagrams, it kind of falls short.

My biggest complaint is that the definitions are often not good. When a character has multiple meanings (as most of them do) you can't count on the most common meaning being first in the list, and in some cases common meanings aren't listed at all. If you're using the definitions to make flashcards, you'll be frustrated by the number of times two characters are given exactly the same English definition, even though in reality they differ in connotation or in usage.

There is never any distinction made between characters that stand as words on their own and characters that only ever appear as parts of compound words, which will definitely trip you up a lot if you're using this as a source of vocabulary. And the compound words are sometimes obscure or very old-fashioned terms that, if you say them to a Chinese speaker, will cause them to give you a puzzled look and ask where the heck you learned THAT old word.

The font used for the characters is a typewritten one. If you learn to write the characters as printed in this book, you will end up writing in a very precise but somewhat mechanical-looking style rather than a more artistic handwritten style. Whether that's a plus or a minus is up to your sense of aesthetics. The traditional character edition of this book uses a handwritten font; even though I'm primarily learning simplified characters, if I had it to do over again I'd have picked up that edition instead. (Both editions actually contain both character forms; the difference is mostly the font and the order of the entries.)

If you get this book, use it as a list of characters to learn and a large collection of stroke order diagrams. Keep a real dictionary handy and it'll be a worthwhile learning resource.

a friendly way to learn characters

Learning Chinese characters is incredibly cumbersome. I look at some and wonder how anyone can remember all those lines and dashes! This book gives the character, shows how to draw it, defines it, and demonstrates how it is used in words (or in other characters). A helpful secret to learning characters is to see how they fit together. Often, a character is a compilation of more than one character. It is fun seeing how these compilations work; for example, the word "good" is a combination of the characters for "woman" and "child." Characters, themselves, can tell stories. Seeing the story makes learning and remembering them easier.

Perfect for novices

SO useful. I've started learning Mandarin and this has been an excellent reference; my tutor also flipped through it and pronounced it a good purchase. Especially helpful: it includes diagrams with the order of operations for strokes used in each character, and since I want to know how to properly write rather than just "drawing" characters, that's been great. You may or may not need something more extensive if you're already solid in writing skills, I have no idea; but if you're just starting out, it's perfect.

North American covered bridges were marvels of engineering long before modern civil engineering was invented. Early American bridge builders developed revolutionary new carpentry methods to join timbers into patterns consisting of triangles or continuous arches that resulted in structures rigid enough to span long distances. Called trusses, these systems were critical to bridge construction of the day and had to be protected from the elements by a roof and siding. Few people today realize that bridges were covered to protect the trusses—not the people using the bridge! Unprotected, the trusses soon degraded and the bridge would collapse.

Illustrated with some 550 historical and contemporary photos, paintings, and technical drawings of nearly 400 different covered bridges, America's Covered Bridges offers five readable chapters on the history, design and fate of America's covered bridges, plus related bridges in Canada. Most of the contemporary photography is by master photographer A. Chester Ong of Hong Kong.

About the Author
Terry E. Miller began visiting covered bridges with his father, Max T. Miller, in 1953 and has since visited more than 1,000 in the United States, Canada, Europe, and China, and researched the bridges of two Ohio counties from dusty handwritten journals. Miller spent his career teaching Ethnomusicology at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, retiring in 2005. In addition to his research and writings on the music of mainland Southeast Asia, he is the coauthor of the popular textbook World Music: A Global Journey.

Ronald G. Knapp is a historical-cultural geographer at State University of New York at New Paltz, where he taught from 1968 to 2001. For the past forty-five years his research has focused on China's frontier history and Chinese vernacular architecture, with many books that celebrate these traditions. His book, Chinese Bridges: Living Architecture from China's Past introduced China's covered bridges to Western readers and has served as the model for America's Covered Bridges: Practical Crossings—Nostalgic Icons.

Interesting perspectives on covered bridges

This is a beautiful book, well-written with great photography. It is a book to return to, time after time to look at pictures and to learn from the practical and historical writing about covered bridges. The eye-catching photos will make this an ideal coffee-table book, but the wealth of information will sustain your interest for years.

The authors have organized their book into "broadly conceived perspectives of the covered bridge as utilitarian objects, indicators of technological ingenuity and progress, obsolete nuisances, and nostalgic icons and symbols of the past." The book lives up to this daunting challenge and does so with engaging language, striking a balance between "erudite academic" and "down home." For me, the pictures and descriptions reveal a love of the subject matter. I was particularly taken with the speculative theories about how the bridges were constructed. People have wondered for centuries about how the pyramids were constructed and how Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In an investigative spirit the authors present alternative ideas on how covered bridges could have been constructed long distances over rivers. The deductive reasoning from known facts and evidence to a reasonable theory guides the reader to a conclusion, with just the right amount of "ah ha" combined with skeptical insight.

This book holds fascination for all types of readers. Casual readers may just want to browse the pictures while industrious readers will find descriptions and contemporary issues to ponder. In particular, chapter Five: Finding a Place for Covered Bridges in the Twenty-First Century grapples with combining nostalgia and historic preservation with the need for safety and practical use in a time of bigger and heavier vehicles.

This is a book to be enjoyed and from which readers will learn.

Excellent!!

You will most certainly want this book in your covered bridge library as it is just fantastic! It is extremely well written and information is well documented. The authors did their homework and put the necessary time and effort into making sure this book is one of the best in regards to our covered bridges. It is a great resource book and the photography is absolutely stunning. The Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center is proud to have a copy of it in their covered bridge library and it is already well used.

About the Author
Mark Bishop lived in Okinawa for more than fifteen years, studying with, interviewing, and writing about many of the best-known Okinawan martial arts masters. Married to the daughter of a prominent Okinawan religious leader, he has been allowed unusual access to the inner teachings and opinions of many of the masters he has encountered. Upon his return to England, he established himself as an in-demand martial arts lecturer and teacher. He is the author of Zen Kobudo and writes extensively for martial arts magazines. He lives in Sussex, England.

history of Okinawan karate styles

Mark Bishop has written a geneological history of most, if not all, of existing karate styles that have their roots in Okinawa. Though his work is not sourced and footnoted as is customary in academic writing, he does indicate that his information comes from interviews with karatedo masters in Okinawa, and presumably these interviews were conducted in the masters' native language. Since the vast majority of martial arts "history" is oral, and his book is so detailed, I find his accounts quite credible. In this book, Mark Bishop has done a good job of conveying the commonalities of all karate styles, despite the efforts by some to differentiate and mysticize them. Bishop should also be commended for debunking the frequently told myth that martial arts began in Okinawa when weaponless peasants developed fighting techniques to counter the aggression of Japanese samurai. He also presents his interview subjects as real people -- some of the karate masters he interviewed struck him as slightly bombastic or secretive, while others came across as humble and eager teachers. Instead of editing these impressions out he includes them.
This is not the book for people with little or no experience in the martial arts looking for a guidebook so they can learn how to win bar fights. The book is most valuable as a historical reference.

Bias - Shorin Ryu Marketing

Although we have to admit that Mr. Bishop put a lot of research on the history of the Birthplace and Development of Karate, there is too much of his opinions imprinted on the writing style... all in favor of the several branches of Shorin Ryu and at a certain point minimizing the importance of the other Okinawan Karate Koryu... Further more on his excerpt titled Goju and Health, Mr. Bishop presents an irresponsible and highly biased personal opinion disguised as a "medical proven fact" of the alleged health effects caused by Sanchin Kata (Three Battles Form). Reality has it that Mr. Bishop is not a health licensed professional and according to my research there has never been a scientific study performed or any type of medical lead investigation that supports his misguided and fantastic allegations about the Danger of the Practices included in Goju Ryu Karate Do... He goes to the length to even propose that Goju Teachers die at an early age, this cannot be further from the truth, e.g., Yagi Meitoku Dai Sensei founder of Meibukan Goju Ryu and Successor of Miyagi Chujun O'Sensei founder of Goju Ryu Karate Do, died at age 91, and reportedly, practiced Sanchin Kata until the dawn of his days (1912-2003)... The book relays interesting information to include apparent gossips of the Okinawan Karate Koryu, and excellent tables of lineage... Certainly NOT a technical book and NOT for beginners. Otherwise recomended as a good source of record of Okinawan Karate Teacher-Student Lineage and Geneolocial Tree... Juan Javier Adames / USA - Philippines

A Personal Journey Through the Homeland of Karate

Mark Bishop offers us a look at karate on Okinawa. Not in the usual manner, wherein an author tries to explain techinques through pictures and words, but through descriptions of his discussions with practitioners of different styles of karate and kobudo (traditional weaponry), and descriptions of the many dojo (schools) he visited. Bishop includes photos of the places he visited and the masters he met throughout the volume, and for most schools offers lineage charts showing who the major instructors of each master were, and that teacher's senior students. One emerges with a new awareness of and appreciation for the diversity of Okinawan Karate, both in practice and philosophy.
The author breaks down the book into three major sections. The first of these is on styles and teachers of Karate directly related to Chinese Boxing ("kung fu"), such as Jukendo, Ryuei-ryu, Goju-ryu, Uechi-ryu, Pangai Noon, and Kojo-ryu. section Two is concerned with Shorin-ryu styles of karate, including Matsumura Orthodox shorin-ryu, Ishmine-ryu, Tomari-te, Shorinji-ryu, Matsubayashi-ryu, Chuba-ryu, Isshin-ryu, Shorin-ryu (shaolin), Ryukyu Shorin-ryu, Kobayashi Shorin-ryu, Kushin-ryu, Kenwa Mabuni Shiito-ryu, Shinpan Shiroma Shiito-ryu, Tozan-ryu, and Okinawan Kempo. The third section of this book delves into schools and instructors of Kobudo (traditional weaponry), includingHoshin-ryu, Yamani-ryu, Uhuchiku Kobudo, Ryukyu Kobudo, Matayoshi Kobudo, Motobu-ryu, and Bugeikan. Also included are appendixes with a map of Okinawa (detailed names of each region of the Island), a Kata (form) chart showing what kata each school of karate practices, a list and description of Kobudo weapons, and addresses of major teachers and schools in Okinawa. This is probably the best guide to different forms of Okinawan martial arts, since the author is able to include his personal observations, and not simply a collection of data from other sources.
