Ningyo: The Art of the Japanese Doll features over 250 unique photographs as well as extensive commentary and background history.

Japanese dolls (ningyo) have played an important role in Japanese art and culture since its earliest stages of development, as talismanic figures, centerpieces, in elaborate festivals, medical study tools, theater distractions, decorative objects, and avidly collected art forms, as well as childhood playthings. Ningyo: The Art of the Japanese Doll is the most comprehensive book on antique Japanese dolls and figurines published in English. The book focuses on the many types of Japanese dolls:

  • gosho: palace dolls
  • hina: Girl's Day dolls
  • musha: warrior dolls for the Boy's Day Festival
  • isho: fashion dolls
The principle forms of the dolls and their history, stylistic development, cultural context, and economic imperatives are discussed against the backdrop of Edo-period society and popular culture. Beautifully detailed color photographs of ningyo drawn from private collections, many of which are published here for the first time, as well as images of related materials selected from celebrated museums and temple collections, such as folding screens, woodblock prints, sculpture, painting ceramics, and textiles, help place the dolls in context. Ningyo: The Art of the Japanese Doll is a fascinating book for anyone interested in Asian doll art and doll collecting.

A 'must' for any studying Japanese doll history and art
By Midwest Book Review
Japanese dolls are more than just collector's items: they've planed an important cultural role in Japan's society as talismanic figures, festival centerpieces, medical study tools, and more. It's surprising, therefore, that Ningyo: The Art Of The Japanese Doll is the first comprehensive book in English to cover antique Japanese dolls. Six categories of dolls - palace dolls, Girl's Day dolls, Boy's Day dolls, costume and theatrical dolls, and those connected with health, were made during the Edo period: color photos from private collections detail these dolls and provide historical background as well as lovely, full-color photos. A 'must' for any studying Japanese doll history and art.

WARRIORS, ACTORS, AND DEMONS
By Jack Keely
Alan Scott Pate’s impressive book is a detailed exploration of ningyo, an enthralling array of dolls from Japan’s Edo period (1615 – 1868). The dolls are creations of wood, silk, and gofun (a paste of crushed oyster shells which creates their porcelain white faces). The term “doll” is somewhat misleading as these are not playthings. The meticulously detailed figures were intended to commemorate, entertain, and educate. Some were used in the theater and others by medical practitioners. The figures range from a fierce warrior battling a tiger to an undersea princess riding a turtle, and from exotically costumed actors to wild eyed demons. Many of the figures are shown alongside historic woodblock prints featuring the same character. Alan Scott Pate details the symbolism of the costumes, hairstyles, props, and gestures of the dolls. The bits of history and legend that illuminate the story of each doll are told in rich detail. The serious student of Japanese culture will find this book to be a valuable resource. Other readers will be captivated by the color photographs and enjoy an intriguing glimpse into a remarkable culture.

Shinsengumi: The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps, by Romulus Hillsborough

Shinsengumi: The Shogun's last Samurai Corps is the true story of the notorious
samurai corps formed in 1863 to arrest or kill the enemies of the Tokugawa
Shogun. The only book in English about the Shinsengumi, it focuses on the
corps' two charismatic leaders, Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo, both
impeccable swordsmen. It is a history-in-brief of the final years of the
Bakufu, which collapsed in 1867 with the restoration of Imperial rule. In
writing Shinsengumi, Hillsborough referred mostly to
Japanese-language primary sources, including letters, memoirs, journals,
interviews, and eyewitness accounts, as well as definitive biographies and
histories of the era.

The fall of the shogun's government (Tokugawa Bakufu, or simply Bakufu) in
1868, which had ruled Japan for over two and a half centuries, was the greatest
event in modern Japanese history.

The revolution, known as the Meiji Restoration, began with the violent
reaction of samurai to the Bakufu's decision in 1854 to open the theretofore
isolated country to "Western barbarians." Though opening the country was
unavoidable, it was seen as a sign of weakness by the samurai who clamored to
"expel the barbarians."

Those samurai plotted to overthrow the shogun and restore the holy emperor
to his ancient seat of power. Screaming "heaven's revenge," they wielded their
swords with a vengeance upon those loyal to the shogun.

They unleashed a wave of terror at the center of the revolution - the
emperor's capital of Kyoto. Murder and assassination were rampant. By the end
of 1862, hordes of renegade samurai, called ronin,
had transformed the streets of the Imperial Capital into a "sea of blood."

The shogun's administrators were desperate to stop the terror. A band of
expert swordsmen was formed. It was given the name Shinsengumi ("Newly
Selected Corps") - and commissioned to eliminate the ronin and
other enemies of the Bakufu.

With unrestrained brutality bolstered by an official sanction to kill, the
Shinsengumi soon became the shogun's most dreaded security force.

In this vivid historical narrative of the Shinsengumi, the only one in the English language,
author Romulus Hillsborough paints a provocative and thrilling picture of this
most fascinating period in Japanese history.

Review
"So, what do the Hell's Angels and the Shinsengumi have in common? They both had a propensity for violence, a strict internal code of conduct, and an alarmingly excessive reaction to insult, real or perceived. Also, they probably would have slaughtered each other on sight." —Goodreads

From the Author
Shinsengumi: The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps is the only English-language history of the shogun's notorious hit-squad in Kyoto during the final years the shogun's government. It is my most controversial book. I think that much of the controversy is due to the language. I experimented in this book, repeating certain phrases to stress certain characteristics of the Shinsengumi leaders, including their "propensity to kill." Readers either love it or slam it. But I stand behind my original language and would not change a single word.

About the Author
Romulus Hillsborough, originally from Los Angeles, lived in Tokyo for sixteen years, immersing himself in the study of Japanese language, history and culture. Most of his reading focused on major literary and historical works of Japan. He was particularly drawn in by the tumultuous history of the final years of the shogun's government and the return of political power to the Emperor.

To compliment his reading, the author traveled to historical cities and towns around Japan where his samurai subjects lived and died and where the revolution to overthrow the shogun unfolded. During that time he worked as a writer for a popular weekly magazine in Tokyo and later as a contributing journalist to a number of other Japanese publications.

Upon returning to the United States, Hillsborough settled in San Francisco. Since then, he has returned to Japan many times to resume his travels to historical cities and deepen his understanding of his samurai subjects.

Romulus Hillsborough is an acclaimed expert in the field of Japanese history and culture. His books have been published in seven languages. The author has appeared numerous times on television and radio including The History Channel special "The Samurai," first aired in 2003, and an NHK television special about the Shinsengumi in 2004. He has spoken at such internationally recognized venues as the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco, CA), the Pacific Asia Museum (Pasadena, CA), the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (Tokyo) and the Japan Information Center, Consulate General of Japan (San Francisco, CA).

Hillsborough's other books include "Ryoma: Life of a Renaissance Samurai," "Samurai Tales," and the forthcoming "Samurai Revolution: The Dawn of Modern Japan Through the Eyes of the Shogun's Last Samurai." Hillsborough currently lives in San Francisco.

Three Phrases Would Have Done It
By Brian Bear
When I saw this book, (quite by accident, actually), I was impressed that here was a book on something that I had never even heard of before. So, the expectation was high.

Hillsborough has tried to bring out the spirit of the organisation without getting bogged down in the details. Actually, it was the details that I was looking for and often the details will give you something of the spirit of the subject anyway. Some of the historical detail was there, and Hillsborough certainly came across as one who knew his subject material and sources. However, with his book being the first in English on the topic, I question whether the deliberate focus away from the said details was justified. For the average non-Japanese, that historical data would have been priceless, as most of us have nothing else about the Shinsengumi to read.

Three phrases were repeated and repeated ad nauseum: "propensity to kill", "will to power" and "self-importance". The latter had some variations, but all three are constantly hammered and drummed into the reader. At one point, the first phrase appears in almost every sentence for about two paragraphs. While it is certainly worthy to explore the motivations of anyone of historical importance, I again question whether the point needed to be laboured to the degree that it was.

A lot of the historical information regarding important incidents involving the Shinsengumi read a bit like a medieval version of "Battle Royale". At one point, I wondered if I were indeed reading a "historical novel" rather than a book on history. This is something to keep in mind, if you are thinking of purchasing the book.

While the book was interesting, it was certainly not fantastic. It left a huge number of unanswered questions and also left me wondering just why the Shinsengumi was feared so much. From what the book described, there were far more vicious individuals around. That information would have gone a long way to create an understanding of just why the Shinsengumi were so feared and hated.

It is an average book, though with nothing else that I know of in English, there is little choice if someone wants to know about the topic. The Shinsengumi are interesting and worth the look, so for that reason alone the book is worth getting. Just don't expect too much from it, that is all.

Great information; terrible writing
By analog shoujo
If you don't speak Japanese, Mr. Hillsborough's books are pretty much your only source for information on the people and personalities of the Meiji Restoration. (Kenshin, Peacemaker, and Gintama can only get you so far!) If you are interested in Japanese history--or the pop culture surrounding the Shinsengumi et. al.--these books are definitely worth a read. But be warned that the writing is just this side of awful...there is more cliche, hyperbole, and terrible dialogue than you can shake a bokken at.

Kind of scholarly, kind of gossipy
By BRYCE O PLATT
I'm not too sure how to describe this book.

First, let me say that I did enjoy the story. For those only marginally acquainted with he subject, the Shinsengumi were supposed to be a pseudo-police force to protect the Shogun at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. They failed, on many levels. the Shinsengumi have a special place in the hearts and history of the Japanese - the closest parallel I can think of is the Texas Rangers, and even then that is not a good comparison. The Shinsengumi have been portrayed in film and anime (most notably Rurouni Kenshin for anime and, well, Shinsengumi with Toshiro Mifune for film); it's through anime that I became interested in knowing more.

The good parts: There is a lot of information here. This is the scholarly part. Mr. Hillsborough does a good job of telling the story of the Shinsengumi, explaining the historical setting and giving insight into the characters and their motivations. Footnotes and textual explanations while not copious are sufficient.

The bad parts: somehow, even though we are talking only a period of some 6 years the story seems short, almost a sketch. Dry. Bring a bottle of water with you dry. And, one of the most dramatic moments of the Shinsengumi - one of the most dramatic moments in Japanese history, the incident at Ikeda'ya - is pretty unsatisfying. Accurately portrayed I have no doubt but somehow lacking.

For a student of Japanese history and culture, this is a good book and does the job well and I do recommend it for this reader. For the casual reader in Japonica, maybe not so much.

Wonderful Introduction to Shaolin Kung Fu
By Laura De Giorgio
The book guides you through the theory and some initial practices of Kung Fu.

At the beginning is the overview of historical development of kung fu and different kung-fu styles, then some suggestions and tips for getting more out of your practice in the shorter time.

Then begins the practical part of the book with the foundation of Shaolin Kung Fu. Here you learn about different hand forms, stances and basic patterns.

The sequence of different practice sets is accompanied by appropriate illustrations (hand-drawn, not pictures).

There is a small section dealing with internal martial arts as well as suggested practices for qin-na and Tiger Claw.

One section deals with classical kung fu weapons, and then you're guided through some additional chi-kung exercises and meditation practices.

All in all, a wonderful introductory book on Shaolin Kung Fu.

Excellent overall book
By Melante
This book is an excellent introduction to the whole kung fu world.
The main focus is, as the title states, on the "Shaolin kung fu" style but also people interested in all the other styles will find this book a goldmine of valuable information.
The material presented in the book spans the history of martial arts in china, the differences and similarities among the various styles, carefully describes the basic stances and patterns of Shaolin Kung Fu (enough to get started on your own, althogh having an instructor is always a wise choice!) and also simple yet very effective chi kung exercises for developing and "feeling" internal energy.
In summary, if you are curious about the exciting world of kung fu and are looking for an excellent introduction, you can't go wrong with this book!
Highly recommended.

This is perhaps one of the best kung fu books you can buy!

For a lone practitioner, it is a great "manual" for developing your Kung Fu training and objectives.

Well pleased.

Complete Wing Chun: The Definitive Guide to Wing Chun's History and Traditions (Complete Martial Arts), by Robert Chu, Rene Ritchie, Y. Wu

Master the many styles of Wing Chun Kung Fu with this expert martial arts guide.

With the fame of Bruce Lee, the conditions in Hong Kong, and the hard work and effort of many of his classmates, the Wing Chun of the late master Yip Man became one of the most well-known and popular Chinese martial arts in the world. Although this gave Wing Chun international recognition, it also led to a lot of misconceptions. Due to a lack of authentic information, many mistakenly came to assume that the renowned Yip Man was the sole inheritor of the style and that his Wing Chun was the lone version of the art.

In fact, there are several different and distinct systems of Wing Chun. Unfortunately, over the years most of these systems have remained unseen or unreported to all but a few—until now.

Profusely illustrated with over 300 historical photographs, Complete Wing Chun: The Definitive Guide to Wing Chun's History and Traditions presents seldom seen information on a dozen branches of the Wing Chun art. It offers the reader side-by-side comparison of these arts by outlining each system in terms of Wing Chun history, principles, basics, and training methods:

  • Yip Man Wing Chun
  • Yuen Kay-San Wing Chun Kuen
  • Gu Lao Wing Chun Kuen
  • Nanyang Wing Chun Kuen
  • Pan Nam Wing Chun Kuen
  • Pao Fa Lien Wing Chun Kuen
  • Hung Suen Wing Chun Kuen

Every Wing Chun practitioner should read this book.
By Mingyuan Sung
Finally here comes a great reference book. Although I expect more detail information, this is a great milestone. I suggest every Wing Chun practitioner should read this book and have some insight about this martial art system. I hope to see more books from the authors in the future to show us more style pictures and training methods and maybe more true history. We should all thank the authors' effort to bring us this book.

Inadequate research & biased favor for Yip Man & Yuen KaySan
By A Customer
Without adequate research and candid comparisons, the authors are too hasty to claim that all Wing Chun schools are the same (p116 -- the three main boxing forms are fairly consistent in organization throughout the various styles; p117 -- All have, and none have.) Their statement appears to be made out of respect for the various schools. However, by ignorng the obvious differences in curricula and by generalizing the similarities of the three main forms, they are now ready to extol their practiced styles toward the end of their text -- the Yip Man and Yuen Kay-Shan styles (p118-120.) These two styles have been subtly positioned to be the standard of reference for comparative studies. Hence the differences found in other Wing Chun styles are ascribed to influences from non Wing Chun kung fu.

We need more books like this
By MR LIAM B KEELEY
I remember seeing an article, I think by Jane Hallander, in a martial arts magazine more than a dozen years ago, with an intriguing account of a Wing Chun type style called pao fa lien. I thought it an exceptionally interesting article, and it certainly made me wonder what other forms of Wing Chun were still alive in China and its neighbouring countries. To most Westerners, Yip Man's style has become the standard when it comes to Wing Chun, and so it was fascinating to learn of the existence of other branches.

Not only is this a groundbreaking book, but it could be the start of a new genre in martial arts books. What we have here is a fine compilation of information about no less than eight styles of Wing Chun and briefer mention of half a dozen others. The authors themselves are from diverse backgrounds and styles of wing chun, and I can only applaud their vision and maturity in working together to present such a wide range of information to the martial arts public. Very briefly, they are Robert Chu, resident in California, a practitioner of Yip Man, Gu Lao, and Yuen Kay-San Wing Chun styles; Rene Ritchie, of Eastern Canada, a student of the Yuen Kay-San Wing Chun style; and Y. Wu who resides in Singapore and practices the Nanyang and Yip Man Wing Chun styles.

Since most readers are probably more familiar with the Yip Man style, I'd like to focus on the lesser known styles in this review. You'll be glad to know that pao fa lien is one of the eight styles featured in this fascinating volume, and it was the first one that I turned to when I inspected the book. We are told that the art is composed of 10 empty-hand sets, four wooden dummy sets, and over a half dozen weapon sets. The three trademark empty-hand sets of wing chun, siu nim tao (little idea), chum kiu (seeking bridge), and bui jee (darting fingers), make up the basic level of forms training. While the weapons sets focus on the familiar (at least to wing chun practitioners) long pole and double knives, there are also other weapons such as the 13 section whip, the scholar's sword, the trident, and the Kwan dao. It seems that there are two varieties of sticky hands practice within the various wing chun systems, one resembling more the pushing hands of tai chi rather than the "rolling" sticky hands that are more familiar to most of us, and the pao fa lien system uses the "tai chi" variety.

Among the other little known styles is Nanyang Wing Chun, which, we are told, includes the three typical sets of wing chun, the wooden dummy training, and the typical weapons: the pole and the double knives. In addition, it has a number of other empty hand sets, one of which seems to indicate some kind of relationship between Wing Chun and white eyebrow boxing (Pak Mei). A fascinating insight was the mention of the so-called "separate techniques." In the Gu Lao style, no use is made of forms.

The founder, Leung Jan, passed his style on in the form of a 40 point system. We are told on page 47, that "One should not simply look at the 40 points as techniques, but as to teach the fighting skills of wing chun. When the basics are mastered, a student can then do combinations and permutations of the techniques while moving left and right, with high or low stances, at high, middle, or low levels, to the front and back, and/or while advancing or adjusting the steps. Advanced practitioners can reach the level of being able to change and vary their movements with empty hands or the double knives."

I find this emphasis on perfecting single techniques absolutely fascinating, and it fits in with what Adam Hsu has to say about the importance of perfecting single techniques in his new book, The Sword Polisher's Record, where he asks: "Is it necessary to learn forms?" We are also told in the section on Yuen Kay-San Wing Chun, that some previously "separate" techniques have been formalized into training sets. It makes me think that this movement of techniques from single, separate techniques into sets is the norm, at least in Chinese boxing styles, and would seem to indicate that most styles start with a group of separate techniques which then gradually coalesce into a set or sets.

While this book is probably of most value to wing chun and jkd practitioners, I hope it will serve as a model of more comparative studies of the often amazing variety within a single system. Two related styles from Fukien, Emperor Fist, aka Grand Ancestor Fist, and Five Ancestors Fist, and on the Okinawan side, Uechi-ryu and Goju-ryu, are prime candidates for this kind of study. We need more books like this.

Blue and White Japan, by Amy Sylvester Katoh

From Finland to Guatemala blue and white is a classic color combination. But nowhere is this design element more a part of the interior landscape and culture than in Japan, where blue and white appear together in fine porcelains and on tiles, in textiles, kitchenware, futon coverings and kimonos. In this delightful, popular book, available in hardcover since 1996, Amy Sylvester Katoh and photographer Yutaka Satoh blend photograph and essay to explore the mix of functionality and beauty that is at the heart of Japanese style. They offer a rich array of great design ideas-from soba cups to sinks-in blue and white. Along the way, you'll meet Japanese indigo textile craftsmen and learn about such indigo techniques as katzome, stencil dyeing, and shibori, a delicate, sophisticated form of tie-dyeing in indigo. From hats to vases, floor cushions to tea settings, Blue and White Japan is a fascinating, inspiring look at this classic design.

Indigo and white. What could be more harmonious in your home? The photos in this book prove it. This is an excellent indigo primer that shows examples of dyed textiles such as tsutsugaki, shibori, sashiko and katazome as well as kasuri weaving and sakiori, a way of recycling old textiles by tearing them in strips and weaving them into floor coverings and quilts.

From Booklist
Elements of long-revered tradition and superb artistry naturally merge in both the textile art and the ceramics of Japan. Katoh's attractive sourcebook presents material for individuals interested in forming a collection as well as for those who appreciate the refined aesthetic of Japanese style and design. Katoh features simple tenugui (hand towels) and sublime Imari (porcelain ware) as two examples of Japanese collectibles traditionally decorated in blue and white. She also highlights individual artists. A detailed source list offers flea market schedules and locations of antique shops, galleries, museums, and artisans. Alice Joyce

Blue And White Japan
By Blue Rabbit
I really loved this book. It has wonderful photography and is an interesting read. I particularly like the fact that the author grew up in a western country, and now lives in Japan, because she shares her outlook from a Western eye, which is helpful to a Western reader who loves antiques and collectables, along with blue and white. I love the way the photos blend the simplicity of Japanese style along with a little Western taste in collecting things. It has a nice balance of not over doing the display of cherished things, while still enjoying them in the home. To me it had a very "Zen" feel of harmony and beauty, and had a feeling of "coming home" to things I love when I looked at this book. I felt inspired to rearrange my collections and cut clutter while still displaying favourite items in a complimentary way.

Complete Kendo (Complete Martial Arts), by John J. Donohue, Kathleen Sweeney, Matthew Donohue

A thorough introduction to the Japanese martial way of the sword, Complete Kendo covers every aspect of the discipline, from equipment and terminology to technique and strategy.

Complete Kendo is a thorough introduction to the Japanese martial way of the sword and a guided tour of the principles and philosophy upon which the art is founded. John Donohue covers everything from the care and handling of hakama, the pleated trousers worn by kendoka (practitioners of kendo), to the methods of cultivating the meditative state of mushin (no mind), all in an easy conversational dialogue that is a great pleasure to read.

Structured to echo the organization of the Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, this kendo book is a modern version of the swordsman's primer by a martial artist skilled not only in the art of kendo but, like Musashi, in many traditional Japanese martial arts, and with a superb understanding of the martial tradition and culture of Japan. The author uses lessons learned from a long career of teaching martial arts and academic subjects to impart clearly and concisely the fundamentals of kendo and the martial way.

With explanatory line drawings by Kathleen Sweeney illustrating significant points of discussion, kendo katas, a handy glossary of kendo terminology and related concepts, and an unusually helpful bibliography, Complete Kendo is an essential volume for every kendoka's personal library.

A decent book for beginners
By J. Leigh
This book is slightly better for the beginner than the Heart of Kendo book because it presents materials in the order that most beginners would engage the sport/Way. Ie you learn etiquette, then foot motion, then how to hold a shinai, then basic exercises.

The weakness of this book is it's lack of pictures or pictures that are too small or unclear. I have often found myself ignoring the pictures and simply reading the text and envisioning it in my head because the pictures were so poorly depicted. Furthermore, the pictures are numbered but there is no reference to the numbering within the text.

In general I don't know why Kendo books don't do a better job at presenting technical material. For example, why are movements explained in long paragraphs rather than as enumerated lists that say: Step 1- do this.... Step 2- do this....

If they would just present, for example, the Katas (which involves the actions of 2 people) as tables with 3 columns, where column 1 is what the Uchidachi does; column 2 is what the Shidachi does; and column 3 is the representative photograph; that would make the study of technique so much easier!

Comparing this book against the Heart of Kendo book, I'd recommend the Heart of Kendo book in its descriptions of technique. Complete Kendo presents the material in a more logical order for beginners. Neither books have an index which means you have to hunt thru the book to find something.

The best book for beginers and intermediate students
By A Customer
This book is an excellent companion to Kendo: The Definitive Guide (KDG). While KDG cover ALL of the technical aspects down to the last detail, this book's focus is aesthetics and beginners Kendo. It was recommended to me by one of my school's Sensei who felt it covered ideas and concepts that you would normally only hear through the spoken word: the relevance of Kata, the formal apsects of the dojo, and why there is no defence in Kendo. The author is an antropoligist in NY, and I believe it gives him a nice perspective on the aesthics and ideas behind Kendo that you will not find in most other books, especially those translated from the east. I think begginers and advanced students will learn a lot from this book and I believe it is the perfect companion to Kendo: The Definitive Guide.

Got it for a friend
By Pat Storm
She was having problems with a neighbor who made her feel very uncomfortable. Not sure what she got out of this book, but the neighbor is now gone, so the problem is over.
