The Kojiki: Records of Ancient MattersFrom Brand: Charles E. Tuttle Company

Written by imperial command in the eighth century, The Kojiki: Records of Ancient Matters is Japan's classic of classics, the oldest connected literary work and the fundamental scripture of Shinto.

A more factual history called the Nihongi or Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) was completed in A.D. 720, but The Kojiki remains the better known, perhaps because of its special concern with the legends of the gods, with the divine descent of the imperial family, and with native Shinto. Both works have immense value as records of the development of Japan into a unified state with a well-defined character. Indeed, even the mythological aspects were accepted as fact throughout most of subsequent Japanese history—until the defeat and disillusionment of the nation in 1945.

This classic text is a key to the historical roots of the Japanese people—their early life and the development of their character and institutions—as well as a lively mixture of legend and history, genealogy, and poetry. It stands as one of the greatest monuments of Japanese literature because it preserves more faithfully than any other book the mythology, manners, language and traditions of Japan. It provides, furthermore, a vivid account of a nation in the making.

The work opens "when chaos had begun to condense, but force and form were not yet manifest, and there was nought named, nought done &ellipse;" It recounts the mythological creation of Japan by the divine brother and sister Izanami and Izanagi; tales of the Sun Goddess and other deities; the divine origin of Jimmu the first emperor; and the histories of subsequent reigns. Epic material is complemented by a fresh bucolic vein expressed in songs and poetry.

This famous translation by the British scholar Basil Hall Chamberlain is enhanced by notes on the text and an extensive introduction discussing early Japanese society, as well as The Kojiki and its background. Important for its wealth of information, The Kojiki is indispensable to anyone interested in things Japanese.

A Royal Pain to Read
By M. Young
The Kojiki is the seminal work of Japan's Shinto belief system. There's no understanding Shintoism (and Japan) without it.

Unfortunately, for those of us who speak English, but not Japanese, a good translation is hard and expensive to find. Basil Hall Chamberlain's is the earliest, dating bck to the late 19th century. Unfortunately, this translation suffers from the worst of the furbelows and obfuscations of the late Victorian/Edwardian era. This includes rendering into Latin anything a Victorian scholar might consider a naughty bit. I hope the new edition coming out in September translates the translation for those of us who didn't attend Oxford.

All in all, you're better off with Donald Phillipe's (Sp?) more recent and lucid translation. But since that, too, is hard and expensive to find, take what you can get. The Kojiki's worth it.

Not worth it
By Joseph Schachtner
This "book" is incredibly abridged. Translation issues make it difficult to read and if you have ANY Japanese historical/cultural knowledge or background it is disapointing and frustrating to read. For future translators; don't translate the Japanese names to their literal English meanings!

A Pain Beyond All Pain Unless You're Fluent in Latin
By NY Bibliophile
I did not realize that aside from the English language, one would also need a Latin language background. Add to that the way Victorian/Edwardians translated stuff and you get problems when things like translating names add to the complications. For instance: when is a name not a name? Well, instead of translating a proper name such as "Robert" to "Robert", "Robert" is translated to "Bright Fame." Tack on other descriptiveness and you get a headache - "His August Mighty Brightness met with Her Supreme Lovely Brightness" and you get the idea. Two stars for effort but for the average "Joe" (or the meaning of Joseph is "God shall add (another son)") I'd pass this on by.

The New Lao Tzu: A Contemporary Tao Te Ching, by Lao Tzu

A new interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, this book is a celebration of the Way of Harmony and Balance. Ray Grigg transforms what has been traditionally called the Tao Te Ching, what he calls the Lao Tzu, from the mysterious to the meaningful. He accomplishes this by abandoning the historical convention of a literal reading of the Chinese texts. The result is a poetic expression of ancient wisdom in a language that readers can approach directly. The wisdom of the Lao Tzu rests in its ability to tease confusion into insight that is beyond the confinement of intellectual understanding. Beautifully illustrated with ink drawings by Bill Gaetz, The New Lao Tzu demonstrates that living the wisdom of the Lao Tzu requires more instinct than reason, more intuition than argument.

From Publishers Weekly
Griff (Tao of Relationships; The Tao of Selling, etc.) here seeks to lay bare the ``essential'' wisdom of a classic Chinese text by eliminating linguistic and conceptual obstructions. The result is a kind of tenderized Tao Te Ching. Lexical problems and controversies surrounding the source materials of the Tao Te Ching, Griff asserts, make even the best of translations subjective interpretations, calling his new version ``...merely an outright declaration of the way the source material has always been treated.'' Based upon nine translations of the ancient text, Grigg's work is also a reflection of the eclecticism typical of Western dabblers in Eastern mysticism-a hodgepodge of loose interpretations and manipulated conventions. But part of the appeal of such a work, as here, is the ability to retain the enigmatic while rendering the text highly readable. Thus, while this is never billed as a scholarly work, readers will want to remain mindful that this rendering provides access not so much to the Tao Te Ching as to one individual's view of what constitutes contemporary ``essential'' wisdom and that that distinction is an important one.

From Library Journal
The fascination with the spirituality of the East is evident in the continuing retranslation of the sacred texts of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism. Grigg's new rendering of the Tao Te Ching is based on arrangement of the recently discovered Ma-wang-tui texts. This sparkling, fresh translation is accompanied by several essays that explore the linguistic and historical context of the work. The simplicity of the translation will enable readers to gain the sense of harmony and stability that the Tao Te Ching strives to teach. Recommended for large public libraries.

Perfection is imperfect,

so the world remains vital.

Fullness is empty

so the source remains boundless.

Therefore,

The straightest course wanders;

The best teaching confuses;

And the greatest eloquence is wordless.

In the cold of winter,

keep moving;

In the heat of summer,

be still.

So the sage balances
the opposites of the world

By moving with an inner stillness.

When the Tao is followed,

the war-horses plough fields;

When the Tao is not followed,

the war-horses ravage countrysides.

The greatest misfortune

is desire.

The greatest burden

is greed.

The greatest curse

is discontent.
Only those who know
when enough is enough

Will ever have enough.

Without gazing out a window,

the way of the world can be seen.

Without stepping beyond a door,

the way of the Tao can be followed.

The Way does not get closer

by searching farther.

Therefore,

The sage keeps to the beginning

to discover the end.

And finds

without seeking;

Arrives

without leaving;

Does

without doing;

And knows

without understanding.

Learning consists of filling;

Following the Tao consists of emptying.

So the sage does less and less

until nothing is done.

When things are doing themselves,

nothing is left undone.

To live harmoniously
in the world,

Let the world do itself.

Selflessly,

the sage becomes one with others.

And with an inner emptiness,

people are received as they are.

The good and the bad

are accepted,

So acceptance is nourished.

The honest and the dishonest

are trusted,

So trust is nourished.
Thoughtlessly,

the sage receives the world as it is.

And with an inner stillness,

becomes one with the wholeness of all.

Fabulous introduction to the Tao Te Ching
By A Customer
This is a great book for two reasons. The first reason is Ray Grigg's translation of the Tao Te Ching itself. There will never be a definitive English translation, but Ray Grigg manages to bring it alive for modern Western readers. He ignores the literal sense of the original Chinese in order to convey the sense and underlying meaning of the message.
Secondly, his description of the history of the Tao Te Ching and the difficulties in translating the text provide a further valuable insight. I highly recommend this book.

Best translation I've read
By Bryan Ferguson
I've studied many translations of the Tao Te Ching and this is the very best in my opinion. Grigg takes a few small liberties with the original texts but his version makes more sense to the Western reader. Through the years I've re-read this book over and over and it is life-changing every time. As a "student of Zen", this book also gives some insight into the foundations of what eventually has come to be Zen Buddhism. If I was ever stranded on a desert island and had to choose only one book, it would be this version by Grigg without a doubt.

superior trranslation of the Tao Te Ching
By A Customer
This interpretation of the Tao Te Ching is poetic, meaningful, and moving. It is in no way "new agey". This translation, in my opinion, is far superior to the Stephen Mitchell translation. I don't know why that book has so many more comments than this one. I highly recommend this version above the Mitchell book.

Useful pocket book for revision
By Hanguphile
I didn't expect too much from this book, having seen other bad reviews. I paid $10.00 for my copy. For me the main advantage is the books small size , which makes it useful to leave in my pocket and use to revise basic korean expressions from time to time (while waiting for street cars, for example).

The subtitle, "How to express 1,000 different ideas with just 100 key words and phrases!" is just misdirection. The book is organised into 100 sections, each of which contains at least 5 or six PHRASES and additionally vocabulary with some 10 to 20 words to learn. I made that well over 1,000 words and phrases with which to express around 1,000 ideas.

There is no organisation in this book that would help anyone to begine learning Korean, but as an "additional resource" it is useful.

Too many spelling and misinterpretations!
By Justin Elliott
There are way too many misspellings in this book for it to be useful. The romanized spelling for pronunciation will have the reader speaking incorrectly but even if you know how to read hangeul then this will still not help because many, many of the words are misspelled in hangeul too! It's like they typed up this book very quickly and didn't bother to edit it (or even read it for that matter). Some Korean sentences given in the book combine formal and informal speech in a way that would sound very rude to a native Korean so be careful! One sentence is translated as "I don't understand Korean" but actually means "I speak a little (or some) Korean." That could be a confusing situation until the Korean you're talking to figures out that you don't really speak Korean! I think everyone would be better off if they just spent a couple of dollars more and bought a secondhand grammar book that has recordings with dialogs.

Huge disappointment
By The Teenage Linguist
I am an intermediate Japanese student. When I was a beginner, I bought the Japanese version of this book (Instant Japanese), and it was excellent. It was the best beginner's book and introduction to Japanese that I have ever seen, and very organized. When people tell me they want to begin learning Japanese, I tell them to get that book (or I lend them one if I have a copy of it). Anyway, I have have wanted to start learning Korean for a while, but most of the books I've looked at are no good. When I found out about a Korean version of Instant Japanese, I was really glad and I thought "okay, I'll just wait until this one comes out. All my problems are solved." I waited with high hopes. Well, when it finally came, my hopes here shot. I couldn't believe how sloppy a job the book was! The book was not very organized. There wasn't much explanation of grammar; just a lot of phrases slapped together in sections. On top of all that, it was full of spelling errors (of the Korean words).

No disrespect to Mr. DeMente--he has written good books--but I had expected much better from him.

Pa-kua: Eight-Trigram Boxing (Chinese Martial Arts Library), by Robert W. Smith, Allen Pittman

Originally published in 1967, Pa-Kua was the West’s first look into the esoteric Chinese martial arts. It has been a valued and sought after text ever since. It was put out of print in the 1970s, but since that time interest in the martial arts have continued to skyrocket. Pa-Kua gives an introduction to the little known mystical martial art from China, Pa Kua Chang (also known as Ba Gua Zhang), translated as "Eight Trigram Boxing". Smith describes its history, profiles its great practitioners and gives a series of unique exercises, illustrating the solo practice and their fighting applications.

Pa-Kua book is good!
By Steve Solo
As a relatively new student of Pa-Kua, I found Mr. Smith's book to be a good introductory text to this wonderful and complex internal style. While he does offer a very good history of Pa-Kua, my only criticism would be that he has a bit too many pictures and not quite enough explanatory text for a book of this size. I would like to know more about the purpose of each movement and less images, since I don't think one can actually learn a martial art via a book alone, but I do think that one can glean valuable insights form the author's experience, and that knowledge, combined with a good teacher, can help one learn this fascinating art more efficiently.

Pa-Kua Chinese Boxing for Fitness and Self-Defense
By Bob Shackleton
First published in 1967, this book was the first English-language text about Pa-Kua Chuan ("eight trigram boxing," also spelled Baguazhang), a comprehensive system of self-defense from China. It is one of the three nei-chia or "internal" systems of martial arts, the other two being Hsing-I Chuan and the more familiar T'ai-Chi Chuan.
Mr. Smith, now retired, was a CIA analyst specializing in the Chinese economy and is also a leading scholar of Asian fighting arts. ["Asian Fighting Arts," which he co-authored with Donn Draeger, remains the single best comprehensive description of the entire range of Asian martial arts.] Mr. Smith moved to Taiwan with his wife Alice in the late 1950s to study the internal and external arts with their leading exponents, nearly all of whom had left China in 1949. [He relates many of his interesting experiences in another excellent book, "Chinese Boxing: Masters and Methods."] He was thus among the first Americans to study these arts with teachers who traced their lineages back to the teachers who codified them in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
This text presents much of the material Mr. Smith brought back from Taiwan, including a brief history of the art and an illustrated description of much of the art's basic material as taught by Mr. Smith's primary teachers, Hung I-hsiang and Kuo Feng-sh'ih. The material covered includes eighteen basic exercises, twenty of the sixty-four linear forms, and the basic circling exercises. The book is thus an indispensable aid for anyone undertaking a serious study of Pa Kua, and also a very interesting and useful text for anyone engaged in almost any kind of serious physical discipline.

Reprint of the now classic book
By magellan
This is a reprint of the now over 30 year old classic that was the first book written by a westerner on this still obscure art. Pa Kua, or the "art of overkill," as it's sometimes called, is still much less known than its sister arts tai chi and hsing i.

After a brief into, some taoist philosophy (such as a brief explanation of the I Ching, and how it relates to pa kua), Smith gives a brief account of the history of the art before getting into the actual techniques. The introduction also includes some delightful stories about the adventures and exploits of some of the most famous masters.

There are two main basic technique sections, one presenting 18 basic movements, and a Forms and Functions chapter of 20 techniques shown with a partner that demostrate the applications. These include hand and foot strikes, traps, takedowns, and throws.

Smith then provides an excellent commentary on how to practice and some do's and don'ts. They're detailed, and at a high level of sophistication in terms of the theory, including much practical advice such as how to relax, how to breathe, how to prepare your mind, and so on. Another important point is that the pa kua techniques are not so much techniques in the traditional sense so much as concepts that manifest change according to the principles of the I Ching. If you understand these and internalize them then your progress will be great. The comments in this section are worth the price of the book by themselves.

Finally, the unique classical circling exercise is presented with a couple of variations thrown in the good measure. These are shown by Paul Kuo, one of Smith's teachers in Taiwan and a famous pa kua master who I had heard of for some years before I saw him demonstrating the form in this book.

I had just one or two final comments about this unique art. The evasive and circling skills of a true pa kua master are formidable and I once had the opportunity to spar with one and see them for myself. I being an advanced karate practitioner, and very big, strong, and fast at the time and the pa kua master being 20 years older and much smaller, I felt he was no match for me in terms of strength and that I had the advantage as far as "duking it out" and trading punches and kicks went.

However, I never got the chance to do that. The master would quickly disappear behind me as soon as I moved toward him. His evasive skills were truly a delight to see and I came away with a new respect and appreciation for this unusual art which is still rarely seen even in China.

Chinese Chess: An Introduction to China's Ancient Game of Strategy, by H. T. Lau

Learn the ancient and fascinating game of Chinese Chess with this expert guide.

Chinese chess, or "elephant chess," has intrigued the powerful and the quizzical for centuries. Although its rules are similar to the well-known Western game, subtle and fascinating variations must be mastered in order to understand the strategies it requires. A great way to learn Chinese Chess, this book is simple enough for Chess beginners but contains a wealth of information and tips that experienced players will find useful as well.

In Chinese Chess, author H.T. Lau explains the game's fndamentals—the rules, the board, and the basics with dozens of insightful diagrams. With the aid of 170 diagrams, Chinese Chess walks players through the board, the movement and values of the pieces, basic rules for capturing and defeating an opponent, techniques and game winning tactics. Once he's covered the basics, Lau introduces advanced tactics, methods for escaping difficult positions, and cunning strategies for winning.

This book includes eighty mid- and end-game exercises designed to sharpen playing skills and strategy, and concludes with two appendixes devoted to the elegantly constructed games found in The Secret Inside the Orange and The Plum-Blossom Meter, two classic seventeenth-century works on Chinese chess.

Sadly, this seems to be the best book in English on this subject
By Laurentiu Cristofor
I was looking for a good book that could change someone who knows how to move the pieces into someone who knows how to move the pieces purposefully. This book is not it, but I also haven't found a better one either. Still, I will score it against an ideal that may be published later, rather than inflating its score because of the lack of alternatives.

The main problem is that this book does not really attempt to distill any understanding of the game in principles and demonstrate those principles with game examples. That is my idea of how a book teaching a game should approach its goal. What we have here instead is a bunch of move collections.

The book starts with the obligatory introduction to the game, its appeal, its rules, and the game notation. It next proceeds to openings where it quickly goes through the most important opening variations - just the moves, no theory or much commentary beyond who's doing better at the end of a variation. Next we jump to endings, which describe the material, the outcome, and then show the moves leading to the outcome, but again, with no higher level description of the tactical approach. The book ends with a collection of middle game problems followed by their answers. Then there are two important appendixes that contain the game collections from two classic old XiangQi manuscripts - moves, variations, no commentary - these account for about a quarter of the content. That is basically it. You're not really being provided with any insight, although, of course, you could derive some from studying all the material, but it's really up to you; the author has not bothered to provide you with much help besides collecting that raw material.

The only thing this book teaches you well is the game notation and how to read games. That is a useful skill, but I was hoping for much more. This book may become more useful perhaps once a really good introduction becomes available, so you can get back to it and play through the variations once you have a better understanding of the game. Otherwise, you can learn just as much about XiangQi (and probably more) by getting a XiangQi software app and playing through its collection of games and problems, and against the software itself.

The most comprehensive English book on the game.
By A Customer
The game of Chinese chess, or 'elephant chess' as
it is known in Chinese, has been played for centuries.
Since, naturally, most of the books heretofore
published on this challenging game of strategy have
been in the Chinese language, the present book by
H. T. Lau renders a welcome service to another large
group of game-lovers the world over.
Explained with clear examples coupled with about
170 diagrams are the fundamental aspects of Chinese
chess - the board, the mode of movement and values of
the pieces, and the basic rules. The reader will note
that there are interesting variations on the Western
chess theme (although no prior knowledge of other
forms of chess are necessary for an understanding of
this book). Once the basics have been outlined,
standard opening strategies are explicated, as are
tactics for use once the game gets under way.
Strategies used with various combinations of pieces
commonly remaining toward the conclusion of the game
are described in a chapter devoted to the end-game,
which is perhaps the phase that the beginner should
master first. This section shows how a player with
seemingly few pieces left can win a game, and how a
player in what looks like a losing situation can force
a draw.
Eightly mid- and end-game exercises designed to
sharpen the player's skill are presented with answers
at the end of the book. Finally, two appendixes are
devoted to the elegantly constructed games found in
two classic seventeenth-century works on Chinese chess.
Here, then, is a book for both the novice and the
chess fan who wants to add to his or her repertoire
of fun.

Not for the faint of heart
By Kris Rhodes
Well, it's a good book such as it is. I wanted to give it 3.5 or even 4 stars. I just didn't feel it delivered what it advertised.
The *tons* of recorded games in the appendices are great. The total lack of annotation is terrible. Perhaps many or most people don't need annotation, but the book was advertised as a book for *beginners* and I am in fact a total beginner, and I found the lack of annotation to be extremely unhelpful. I can't understand why many of the moves are made - and there are even a few games which end in resignation in which I don't understand why the player resigned. Now, like I said, probably many people don't need this explained, but I do, and if you think you would need these kinds of things explained, then this is not the book for you.
On the other hand the explanations of the various openings (8 openings and 8 responses are discussed) are quite good. Again, they will seem high-level to a total beginner like me. There are a lot of things it is assumed you will understand which you might not understand. But still, if you have a board in front of you and play through the moves as you go through the discussion, you will be at least somewhat edified.
Unfortunately, the discussion doesn't really go in-depth. The openings and responses are given, and some comments like "red intends to attack the right side" or "blue is defending the central line" are given at the end of the listing, but no real discussion of the implications of the moves are given. Xianqui is a very tactical game - even more tactical than Western Chess because of the extreme importance of aggressiveness and sacrifice in the game. For that reason, I feel a more detailed discussion of the results of the various opening systems was in order.
So, all in all a decent book but it is quite scary if you aren't ready. Not *really* a beginner's book though I think it is trying to be one.
Here's what it is that bothers me - it reads like a textbook; as though it is assuming you have an instructor there with you to go over the text and to help explain the material. Unfortunately, of course, there is no such instructor so it's kind of like trying to learn the Chinese language by yourself out of a slightly outdated textbook with no access to native speakers to practice with or ask questions of.
But it *is* one of only *two* books on Xianqui strategy I can find anywhere on the net, so the final judgement is: buy it, but be prepared.

I really enjoyed this book!
By Antonio Moreno
I've been following Aaron Fisher's articles for The Art of Tea magazine and the online tea journal "The Leaf" for a couple of years now, so I was really looking foward to reading a full-length work devoted to the Way of Tea. Surely you will find or may have read books on Chado, or Chanoyu, the Way of Tea as expressed by the Japanese tea ceremony... This book is positively different and will be a pleasant counterpoint to others you may have read in that it centers on what the tea ceremony is really all about in a spiritual sense, as opposed to other books that aim to serve as as instructional guides on how-to-perform the Japanese tea ceremony. I'd say the author does an excellent job bringing readers to the root of what drinking tea is all about. The book begins with a history of the masters that paved the way of tea, before continuing in a personal style where the author narrates his own experiences with tea before inviting and encouraging the reader to experience the tea ceremony first hand... for real... deeply.... a tea ceremony that revolves around living in the present and being at one with the Tao, where tea and life become synonymous. This can easily seem a bit too much for some people... but others will certainly understand... or at least strive to.

Gives readers a better understanding of tea and its role in a more serene and spiritual life
By Midwest Book Review
No one can chug boiling hot liquid, so it is the perfect beverage for time to think. "The Way of Tea: Reflections on a Life with Tea" is a guide from tea expert Aaron Fisher as he seeks to give readers a better understanding of tea and its role in a more serene and spiritual life. Hoping to serve as an introduction to the wonders of tea and contemplation, Fisher gives plenty of spiritual wisdom, drawing on eastern philosophy and religion to help readers gain a more through understanding. "The Way of Tea" is a must for those who are wondering what the big deal about tea really is.

An in-depth discourse on the many paths of tea

I most appreciated the interweaving of history and tea culture as seen through the stages of philosophical and spiritual thought. The intelligent and penetrating insights and interpretations offered by the author with regards to the major Taoist and Zen philosophies are engaging to the reader. Fisher ably uses key examples of "tea Zen" from the ages to show readers that mindfulness can be found not only in each cup of tea, but also in its ritual and accompaniments. A core theme of the book is that the essence of tea is found not in the debate or study of its characteristics or in the compulsion to find, grab and "own" tea wisdom & knowledge, but through a mindful approach to contemplating, enjoying, and sharing the beauty of each brew. Overall, the book is a gracious offering by the author to share the life-altering experiences that tea can have, which I think many introspective tea lovers will be able to relate to. I think this book will be well received by those looking for an experience of tea beyond the brew itself.

Classical Geopolitics: A New Analytical Model, by Phil Kelly

Geopolitics is the study of how the projection of power (ideological, cultural, economic, or military) is effected and affected by the geographic and political landscape in which it operates. Despite the real world relevance of geopolitics, a common understanding of what classical geopolitics is and how it works still lies beyond the reach of both researchers and practitioners.

In Classical Geopolitics, Phil Kelly attempts to build a common theoretical model, incorporating a host of variables that reflect the complexity of the modern geopolitical stage. He then analyzes thirteen pivotal but widely differing historical events stretching from the Peloponnesian War to World War II, from the fall of the British and Soviet empires to the contemporary diplomacy of South America. Through this analysis, Kelly tests the efficacy of his model as a comprehensive geopolitical analytical tool that can be used across a broad spectrum of geopolitical contexts and events.

Review
"This book makes an important contribution to the current literature on Geopolitics. The theoretical approach it takes is both innovative and stimulating, and it displays an impressive synthesis of existing theoretical ideas. A milestone reinterpretation of geopolitical theory."—Geoff Sloan, University of Reading

"This is an important work. Many teachers of IR tend to dismiss geopolitics as having been overtaken by technology, but Phil Kelly's analysis shows how mistaken they are. He makes a strong case for the applicability of geopolitical analysis to the study of IR, foreign policy, and strategic analysis. A very worthy contribution to the study of IR and security affairs in general."—Mackubin Owens, Institute of World Politics

Insightful Fun and Useful- a new way of learning about YOU
By Rebecca Hood
The Tao of Birth Days jumped off the shelf at me- it is subtitled 'Becoming who you were born to be' and I thought, what a great goal! What is fantastic about it is that it shows a new system for learning about yourself using the I Ching to discover what youre 'natal hexagram' is- this is fantastic stuff! It is easier than figuring out an astrology column and it was so right-on I almost dropped the book! My natal hexagram really fit, it was uncanny how accurate it was. Everything from my pickiness to my love of nature, my fixation on patterns and my love of animals- really amazing! This book also tells you how to find the natal hexagrams of others, like husbands!- and how to compare your hexagram and theirs to see where you conflict or complimant eachother- very useful! And, my husbands was right on too- almost spooky! All in all this is a great book and I think Ill be using it quite a bit over the years- run out and buy it! Youll be looking up the hexagrams of all your friends and coworkers- it is even now making the rounds of my office and everyone is amazed-

A Poor Use of the I-Ching
By A Customer
I am always amazed when one individual decides to improve on a system that took the Chinise thousands of years to complete. Mr. Sargent claims to have "The words of the sages" behind him, but I was very disappointed with what he did with them. The fact that he does not include any changing lines is telling. Anyone who has spent time with the I-Ching will find nothing new here. Anyone who wants to learn the I-ching would do well to find the Richard Wilhelm/Carry Baynes translation and give it the time it deserves.

Excellent Book!
By Taka
I have been using the I Ching for 31 years with great effect and it has helped me quite a bit. This book opened a whole new view of the system to me, one based on personality types- it was AMAZINGLY accurate! Typing myself & my family has helped us all get along better and figuring out the natal hexagrams of my coworkers has really decreased tensions.
There are great exercises in the back of the book and I think he is one of the few Westerners to understand TEH!

The Secrets of Cabales Serrada Escrima (Secrets of Series), by Mark V. Wiley

A highly effective and well-rounded Filipino martial art, Cabales Serrada Escrima uses basic stick-fighting movements whose applicability extends into both unarmed engagement and knife fighting.

In Secrets of Cabales Serrada Escrima, Mark V. Wiley offers not only a clear presentation of the strikes, blocks, counters, and disarms unique to this style, but goes beyond mere self defense techniques into the concepts underlying the fighting art, explaining how and why the moves work, and when best to use them.

This revised and expanded edition of Mark Wiley's authoritative volume presents the heart of the Cabales Serrada system in six clear parts: an outline of the history and development of the system, personal accounts of Grandmaster Angel Cabales, discussion of the dynamics of body positioning and distance control, sections on the art's core single-stick and empty-hand defensive methods, as well as a comprehensive set of drills.

Ignore negativity and get this book!
By John "The Don"
This book is very helpful in that you get a deep understanding of the fascinating history of where the Cabales Serrada System comes from. You also get step-by-step outlines of many Serrada applications, which only gets better when you have a solid base knowledge of Escrima in general, and Serrada in particular. Mark Wiley brings Cabales Serrada into a new light with this book. The negative press? "Shine it"... you read the book for yourself, and you'll see for yourself! I myself study Serrada Escrima- actually mostly Inayan, from my uncle Mike who learned from my great-uncle Ray Subega, an early student of Inay's. The way I see it, the proof is in the pudding. Wiley has his diploma, who else here can boast that? I agree with Art Miraflor, it is a very GREAT book! Great job Wiley! I also read Wiley's Arnis book, and five stars on that one, too! For those who love to just soak it all in, this book has it! Wiley went to the farthest jungles of the Philippines to get instruction as well as mass info for that project, and well worth the price. I can't wait to read his other books on Filipino MArtial Arts!!!

Peace & Blessings, ~John

A few comments on this controversial book
By magellan
Despite the controversial and critical reviews of this book, I found it useful in learning about some of the history and background of grandmaster Cabales, and also the techniques of Cabales Escrima. I can't comment on the criticisms posted here on Wiley's book, as I'm not primarily an escrimador, being mainly a karate, kobudo, and iaido practitioner. However, I've trained in the Philippine stick arts too and I was just looking for a book that could provide some basic history on the art in addition to what I already knew.

The first few chapters are a brief bio of master Cabales, from his boyhood in the Philippines to his eventual arrival in the states, and his opening up the first Escrima school in the U.S. It was interesting to read about master Cabales's early training experiences and his teacher, F. Dizon, the origins of the first Doce Pares organization (which Wiley claims precedes by over a hundred years the current organization under the Canete family), and other interesting bits of history. After many years of working odd jobs everywhere from the Tondo docks in Manila to Alaska, master Cabales finally settled in Stockton, where he stayed the rest his life, founded the first Escrima school, and saw his art spread from a small inland valley school in California to dozens of countries and thousands of students around the world.

The following chapters are written by students and instructors who were close to master Cabales and who relate their training experiences with him, and the last half of the book is devoted to actual techniques. These show the basic strikes, blocks, disarms, and wrist and armlocks. I enjoyed these chapters too, although the problem with books on the martial arts these days is that you can get video tapes that are excellent on literally hundreds of martial arts which show the art far better than the static photos in books. I myself have dozens of tapes by a number of masters on various styles of Escrima and other Pacific Rim arts that are far better than the photos in any book. Nevertheless, since the book basically combines a brief history and biography of the master, a number of personal memoirs of the master, and a presentation of the basic technical aspects of the art, I didn't mind that too much.

Now not only is Cabales Escrima well established in the U.S. but a number of other Pacific Rim arts as well, including Filipino and Indonesian Kuntao, other Filipino styles and arts such as Pekiti Tersia, Lameco Escrima, Kali Illustrisimo, Kaji Kali, Bakbakan Kali, Arnis, Panajakman, Panantukan, Sikaran, and a number of styles of Indonesian Pentjak-Silat, such as Serak or Sera, Tongkat, Cikalong, Cidepok, Mande Muda, Bukti-Negara, several styles of Cimande, Suci Hati, Perisai Diri, and some others I'm no doubt forgetting. I've studied Kali Ilustrisimo, Inayan Escrima, Ted LucayLucay's style of escrima, Serak Silat, and Wagi Kali Silat myself, and enjoy them very much although they're not my main focus as a martial artist, as I said. But I've certainly learned to appreciate the Philippine and Indonesian arts more, which are truly great martial arts themselves, and I think it's great they're finally getting the recognition they deserve, although it looks like the Escrima world has the same political problems as the rest of the martial arts.

However the controversy surrounding this book plays out, it's amazing to consider that a once obscure art only about 20 years ago is now an international phenomenon with hundreds of instructors in the U.S. and many more overseas. Angel Cabales's Serrada Escrima has perhaps had the greatest influence of all and I hope his and the many other fine Filipino stick arts continue to grow and prosper.

A Escrimador of G.M. Angel Cabales since 1968.
By Art Miraflor
If any Martial Artists wants a complete understanding of the Serrada System, this is the book. I have read the book and it doesn't get any better than this. Mr Wiley is very accurate on the system and techniques because he is an Escrimador. He didn't just read some books than write this book. This book is long overdue. No one has given credit before like this book does, to the early students of G.M. Angel Cabales. In the early days G.M.Angel didn't have one paper, no application, class out line, or certificates of any kind. Everything you learned, you kept in your head, that way other students wouldn't know what number or how many blocks you really knew. Mr. Mark Wiley has given our great Master, Angel Cabales the highest honor by rewriting this new book. Tuttle Publishing has a top notch author of Fililino Martial Arts, and should be very lucky and proud of his quality products on Martial Arts.
