About the Author
Cornelius C. Kubler, Stanfield Professor of Asian Studies at Williams College, received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in linguistics from Cornell University. He earned a second M.A. in Chinese literature from National Taiwan University.

From 1980-1991 he was employed at the Foreign Service Institute, U.S. Department of State, where he served as Language Training Supervisor in Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, and Mongolian; as Principal of the advanced Chinese field school in Taiwan; and as Chair of the Department of Asian and African Languages.

Since joining Williams College in 1991, he has chaired the former Department of Chinese and Asian Studies Program as well as the Department of Asian Studies, which he was instrumental in founding. He has also served as visiting professor at Eisenhower College, Portland State University, Middlebury College, National Taiwan Normal University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages.

Kubler, who is author or coauthor of 20 books and over 50 articles on Chinese language pedagogy and linguistics, frequently serves as reviewer or consultant for Chinese and Asian Studies programs in the U.S. and overseas. He has served as Chair of the Test Development Committee for the SAT Subject Test in Chinese and as member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages of the Modern Language Association. He is currently serving as American Co-Director of The Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies in Nanjing, China.

Effective but irritating

I appreciate the tremendous amount of effort that has gone into the preparation of this book; the result is beautiful and draws the reader in to learn the language. I especially love the pictures and signs, and the introduction at the beginning describing the various languages spoken in China. The author's knowledge is very impressive and I enjoyed learning the history of various characters (which also acts as a memory aid).

Given the effort of preparation, I am at a loss to understand why the book is so riddled with errors. Some characters are used in the examples before they have been introduced, some characters seem not to appear in the glossary at the end, and many individual syllables are not in the Pinyin glossary (although their compounds are). Information on radicals is repeated for every character with the same radical, which I found irritating. The subject matter in the examples has a very narrow focus on Americans studying in China, which I found boring and not particularly relevant to street conversation.

Well designed, effective learning material

I've looked at, and rejected, many Chinese language learning materials. I learned my spoken Chinese with Fluenz, which rocks, but it doesn't teach reading and writing, This book takes good chunk sizes, and understands the importance of lots of practice. They even manage to make the practice reasonably interesting right from the start (difficult when your vocabulary is at the level of a dozen or so characters!). By about the fifty character mark, I was laughing at the occasional burst of humor in their exercise samples.

Note that this review really relates to the combination of Basic Written Chinese and the Practice Essentials workbook.

Great! The size: - big - with big ideographs. The paper: - strong, bright! The content:- clever ! Almost 400 pages of both simplified and traditional characters ! Colorful - dozens of beautiful pages with photos and illustrations ! Basic - for besides the 700 words one has the Mp3 audio. More: can print them in Pdf ! Do I need to say more ? Congratulations to Tuttle and Amazon.

Probably the best book on Taoism & Meditation for beginners.

This is surely one of the best books on Enlightenment, Taoism and Meditation for the beginner that I have ever seen. Although, don't get me wrong, it is a must for anyone interested in these subjects. It gives many new insights, all with a clear explanation. The author gives out the goods on enlightenment and why meditation is so important. He describes the subject with a westerner's scientific point of view and equates enlightenment as the understanding of Reality Without Time (to see as a fourth dimensional being can see). To perceive all time in one moment. He gives the reasons why meditation is the best vehicle to understanding and spells everything out with sound logic. There is a thorough guide to meditation, with basic instructions on Chi Kung exercises, transfer of Ching to Chi (Lien Ching Hwa Chi), transfer of Chi to Shen (Lien Chi Hwa Shen) and Proceed from Shen to Void (Lien Shen Hwan Shiu). This book is truly full of many grand arguments, wise sayings, stories and is a vast source of inspiration. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Robert Powell is an architect and writer. He was formerly Associate Professor of Architecture at the National University of Singapore. Currently Project Director and Head of Ecomasterplanning with Llewelyn Davies Yeang (London), he is working with Ken Yeang on projects in Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Qatar. He is the author of thirty books, including The Tropical Asian House; Modern Tropical Architecture: The Work of Tay Kheng Soon and Akitek Tenggara; Rethinking the Skyscraper: The Complete Works of Ken Yeang; Singapore Architecture; SCDA Architects: The Architecture of Soo Chan; Singapore: Architecture of a Global City; The New Malaysian House; Singapore Houses and The New Indonesian House. About the Author
Pierre Ostrowski has spent his time in Asia teaching English, studying languages and traveling as much as possible. He studied Chinese at Providence University in TaZchung, Taiwan for four years. In addition, he spent his leisure hours studying Chinese cuisine and perfecting his Ma Pou Doufu recipe. Although he has traveled to over twenty countries in Asia and elsewhere, some of his fondest memories are related to China. He loves the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. He also enjoys the memory of riding around Beijing's historic "hutong" area on a rattletrap Chinese bicycle. Finally, and as far as he's concerned, there's nothing quite as sublime as sitting on a remote section of The Great Wall of China and watching it snake off into infinity over rolling hills of green&hellipthe perfect Chinese moment.

Gwen Penner, a graduate of the University of Manitoba's Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honors) program, is the recipient of numerous awards in painting, drawing and printmaking. She has spent the last several years living in Asia. An inquisitive person, Gwen has a profound understanding of Chinese culture, and her insight into the intricacies of Chinese culture comes through in the many subtle nuances she incorporates into her drawing. Most Accurate Summary of China I've Ever Seen

This book is a rare gem in that it actually serves up a healthy dose of reality. Of course, as other reviewers have pointed out, it's short and therefore contains a lot of generalizations. But I can't think of a better starting point for getting to know China as it really is. I am a Chinese-English translator, have lived in China, and love the country and the people. However, every country has its upsides and a downsides, the U.S. obviously included. You cannot truly understand any country, let alone China, until you have an understanding of some of the less-desirable aspects as well as the (obvious) positives. I have at least 50 books on various aspects of Chinese culture, and this is the first one I've seen that tells it like it is, no holds barred. Until you have this perspective, it's impossible to appreciate all of the many, many wonderful qualities China has. This brief overview has some of the best information on what makes Chinese people tick I have ever seen. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. And lest anyone make the mistake of thinking that I am anti-Chinese, let me just mention that I would move back there tomorrow if I could. I think that says it all.

Good guide for expats and tourists

"It's all Chinese to me" is an introduction to Chinese culture intended for tourists and expats. The start of the book is mainly text about the Chinese culture whereas the ending of the book is mainly pictures about the culture and things you should and should not do in China. The book is small and an easy read. Language usage is easy to understand. Like many of these books, the amount of generalizations in enormous and the actual insight in the culture is limited, yet it is a useful guide for expats and tourists.

The book consists of 11 chapters. The early chapters (History, politics, influences (or religion), rituals, and guanxi/mianxi contain mostly text with some pictures. From chapter seven onwards, the book mainly contains funny and interesting pictures with some text underneath it explaining the pictures and a tip. For example, on page 140 there is a picture with a foreign woman waving her hands while talking and a Chinese women looking puzzled. The text underneath says "Using excessive hand motions while talking may be a great source of bewilderment for many Chinese people." Etc.

A funny side-note on this book was that I bought it from the airport in Shanghai. When reading it, I noticed that one page was 'thicker' than the others, then I noticed that it also missed one page. After careful examination, I discovered that page 16-17 were glued together when I bought the book. These are the pages covering lacking democracy and the tiananmen incident. Apparently the Chinese censorship (ministry of information...) liked the book except for these pages and solved it creatively.

I enjoyed the book. It is all very stereotypical and shallow... it doesn't go deep into the Chinese culture and language. Yet, if I were an expat to China then this book would definitively be useful. It didn't contain very obvious mistakes either, as far as I could tell. Because the book does what it should do, but is not an exciting must-read book that gives great insight, I'd rate it to 3 Amazon stars. Good for quick reading by tourists and expats, not good for people looking for deep insights.

Excellent intro to China

This is a short, very readable book. I learned a lot.

My first reaction to a lot of it was, "Oh my. Well I never want to live in mainland China." But as I skimmed back through the book after reading it, many of the things seemed more positive and endearing (except the oppressive Communist system, which of course just plain sucks). I count this as a strength of the book - by the time I reached the end, I could understand the Chinese worldview enough to appreciate the good, empathize with the bad, and overall do more than merely react "how odd" or even "that's just plain crazy!"

I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn what Chinese people are like and how to avoid the worst faux pas when in China. There is also a very enlightening overview of Chinese history and how it compares to the West.

Caveat: I have never been to China, although I have known a few Chinese people in the US. However, many of the things described are very similar to the Japanese, who I do know fairly well, having lived in Japan for a year and a half. So I have reason to believe that this book is probably pretty true for China itself.

A word about stereotypes: It's a fact that people of a culture share many common traits and behaviors. The problem with stereotypes is not that they don't exist - they do. Many Southerners are polite, many New Englanders are frank. Many Austrians are formal, Italians gregarious, Japanese reserved. American business people will offer their hand and shake firmly. If you've been to these places you know it's true. The problem with stereotypes is when you use them to pre-judge people, and never look beyond the stereotype to see their individuality and appreciate their point of view.

With a mother who is a dietitian with a master's degree in nutrition, Shubhra grew up with Indian food and nutrition as a constant presence in her life. Another Home Run Cookbook from Shubhra!

This book is a must for lovers of vegetables and Indian cuisine - and if you love both, even better! The recipes are easy to follow and just delicious. I have a CSA and am always looking for ideas to use my produce, so this will be my first cookbook to check. It also has a great section on lentils and legumes with easy and flavor packed recipes. The first recipe I made was the chickpea curry - awesome! Another favorite recipe is the the sweet potatoes with lime juice and seasonings. If you are looking for a go-to vegetarian cookbook that doesn't rely on a lot of dairy, this is it.

My boys like my cooking!

I recently attended Shubhra's cooking class and learned how to make strawberry lassi, vegetable biryani, and sweet & spicy butternut squash. The results were mouthwatering, and made me buy her new cookbook, "hurry home" and make the vegetable biryani for dinner, which was devoured by the next day! Shubhra lovingly (with stories from her childhood) explains the recipes in her book, and each recipe comes with a heartwarming anecdote.
She also made hot and crispy maki ki roti (indian cornbread) for all the classes at my boys' school. My boys came home saying nothing else but "make maki ki roti"! :)

You will love cooking with this book, and the aromas that await you!

Best Indian cookbook you can find!

I grew up eating North Indian food but never learned how to make it. So after leaving home and my mother’s cooking, I’ve been craving healthy and traditional North Indian food. For the past couple of years, I searched for Indian cookbooks but all the books I found had such complicated recipes with so many ingredients. It got to a point where I started dreading cooking. Until a couple months ago, I came across Shubhra’s cooking classes at Central Market in Houston. At first I was hesitant because so many cookbook authors claim there recipes are simple and healthy, which I find not true. But after taking Shubhra’s cooking class, I was so impressed. We made traditional North Indian recipes, that required such simple spices that most of us have sitting in our cupboards…cumin seeds, salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper and turmeric. And that’s it! Everything we made in the class only required these five spices. At first I was hesitant because the recipes seemed too simple. But after tasting the dishes we made, the food was the same traditional North Indian food that I grew up with. The taste of the food brought back so many memories of what I grew up eating. And best of all….the recipes are super healthy and quick to make! So I ended buying both of her cookbooks right then and there. Her cookbooks are organized so well. The beginning is full of tips and techniques to get you started with cooking Indian food. It is the perfect intro for someone who doesn’t have much experience cooking Indian dishes. And best of all, almost every recipe is accompanied by a picture. The books are so colorful and vibrant and full of so many different recipes. For the first time, I can now cook traditional North Indian food and enjoy it rather than dread the thought of cooking. No more standing in front of the stove for an hour and a half and searching grocery stores for a ton of exotic ingredients. These recipes are simple, healthy and most only require minutes in front of the stove! I’ve even made a few dishes for a potluck with some friends who are from North India. The dishes were a total hit and everyone was asking for the recipes. So for the first time ever, I’m having such a good time cooking because the recipes are so easy yet traditional tasting! Shubhra’s cooking technique has turned my experience in the kitchen from dreadful to excited! Thank you Shubhra for sharing your recipes in your books! I’m looking forward to more classes and more books in the future!

Good Read

Very good and well written. Could've used a bit more polish, but I enjoy reading it. Plain and straight to the subject matter. This book dives straight into Japanese Onomatopoeia and helps you to understand things a bit more.
If you enjoy reading Manga or watching Japanese Anime, this will help shed light on what some things you see and hear and read mean.

I bought the digital version and everything is As advertized.

A good purchase for any budding Japanese enthusiast.

'The Second 100 Chinese Characters' vs. '250 Essential Chinese Characters (Vol. 1)'

In general, this book delivers exactly what it claims. Though it only contains 100 characters, it's slim and light weight so it's easy to carry around so you can practice on it when you have a few moments to spare waiting for the train (or what have you). It's rather wide though, so unless you're carrying a large purse or a backpack, it's weight is a moot issue.

The most redeeming aspect of this book is the way it presents each character. While Tuttle's other series '250 Essential Chinese Characters for Everyday Use' also provides the stroke order, it doesn't indicate which direction the stroke should be drawn. In many cases this is actually quite important, especially for beginners aiming to gain proficiency. If you purchase an electronic Chinese-English translator, for example, you won't be able to find the English definitions for Chinese characters with many models. I'm currently living in China, and I've had various people (some of them strangers) literally stop me in the middle of drawing a character and correct the direction of my pen.

Moreover, for students who have never drawn any of these characters before, the gridded boxes provided under each character are particularly helpful. The grids help with drawing the correct proportions, and this feature is absent in the '250 Essential Chinese Characters for Everyday Use' series. However, the boxes are pretty big, so you're learning how to draw the characters about 4 times the size you would normally write them. It's like writing the letter 'A' in size 42 font. Still, for a beginner, that might be best.

That having been said, the 'related compounds and phrases containing each character to assist vocabulary building' included in this book are actually quite limited and of little practical use. For example, the word Hui in 'The Second 100 Chinese Charcaters" gives the character and the definitions (1.return 2.turn around). Then the phrases and compounds are listed (in both chinese and English)

1. hui jia --- return home; 2. hui lai -- come back; 3. hui da -- answer 4. hui xiang--- recollect; 5. xia hui -- next time; 6. na hui-- take back/recover.

This is an example where the book is somewhat vague. Does 'hui da' mean TO answer (a verb) or AN answer (a noun)? There are no sentences in the book so you have to use other reference materials to find out for sure.

Moreover, I found that the characters selected for this book, while useful, aren't necessarily the most common.

In general this is excellent for practicing and learning how to draw characters, but it doesn't offer much practical help in knowing how to apply them. I purchased the First and Second '100 Chinese Characters' in addition to 'Volume 1 of 250 Essential Chinese Characters for Everyday Use'. I recommend buying both, but if you have to choose between one or the other, you get more for your money with '250 Essential Characters'. That book also includes stroke order (but not stroke direction) and moreover it includes other definitions with COMPLETE SENTENCES, quizzes, and review sections. Moreover I've found that '250 Essential Characters' offers a better, more useful selection of characters.

"how to" book about Chinese characters

Chinese characters can be a bear. For a long time, I had no idea how people learned (or remembered) them. This book takes the stingers out. It is available in two volumes. The characters are presented in bold type. There are detailed instructions on how to write them. (A professor of Chinese once told me that this was very important--know the stroke order!) This book also gives sample words showing how the characters are used. I use these books along with a text book. If I need to know how to write a particular character (remember the stroke order!), this book will show you. If you are mystified or intimidated by Chinese characters, this is your book!

Clearly written guide for beginners.

Very nicely done. I especially like the stroke directions and practice section. What I didn't find was how to write some of the common greetings, etc. I make my own greeting cards and hoped to find out how to write things like "happy birthday". The authors did explain radicals and how to combine them with other characters. Suppose I will write my greetings with a Japanese accent.

About the Author
Jana Costas is Professor of People, Work and Management at the European University Viadrina, Germany. Christopher Grey is Professor of Organization Studies at Royal Holloway, University of London and Visiting Professor at Université Paris-Dauphine. He is the author of A Very Short, Fairly Interesting and Reasonably Cheap Book about Studying Organizations (2012) and Decoding Organization (2013).
