PreS-Gr 3—Choi collects 14 favorite Korean folk songs; his brief introductions open a window on Korean life and culture. For each song, he includes a simple musical score for keyboard, and lyrics in both English and Korean (Hangul and transliterated). Most are traditional tunes celebrating life (including "Mountain Rabbit/Santokki," "Boat Song/Baetnorae," and "Arirang"—Korea's most popular folk song), while a few reflect their political origins ("Blue Birds/Saeya saeya" was inspired by the events leading up to the 1894 Donghak Peasant Revolt; "Thinking of Older Brother/Obba saenggak" and "Mother, Sister/Eommaya nunaya" were written during the Japanese occupation of Korea) and influences from the West ("Butterfly/Nabiya nabiya" melody is "Hänschen klein," "Three Bears Song" text is based on "Goldilocks and the Three Bears"). From the Author
While doing the research for this compilation, I often found myself recalling memories that I associated with certain songs. When I hear "Doraji", for example, I can picture my grandmother tending to her small garden in our backyard, where she grew vegetables for her cooking. She would also sing while she worked, usually either church hymns or Korean songs like "Doraji " and "Arirang".
Another song that brings back memories is "Boat Song", which I associate with the Korean Language School that I attended as a young boy. The teachers, who were mainly women, would sometimes sing as a group and this was one of their favorites. Somehow they all got into doing the actions and had a great time.
There are so many good Korean folk songs that didn't make it into this book, but hopefully I'll be able to share even more books on Korea and its rich heritage and culture.

Wonderful, beautiful book/CD that I will really treasure

This is a wonderful book that I found at my library and now I'm buying because I've already kept my library copy so long and I need to let others enjoy it. Our Korean grandparents loved it as well. The CD is wonderful and we listened it in the car everyday for over a month. My 5 year old daughter sings along and never tires of it, though she can't speak Korean at all. My older son commented that the CD seems to calm me down in the car when I'm stressed and snippy with him, which made me laugh. Highly recommend! We are a Korean American family, but I think any family that enjoys children's songs/folks songs will be really impressed. I would recommend for a family that has kids in piano lessons or singing lessons - or music teachers would love it. Love the voice of the child singing on the CD, and I like that after each song there is an instrumental verson as well.

Great Resource for Introducing Kids to Korean Music

I'm teaching a unit on Korean music and culture at my early childhood ed center (1-5 years old) -- this book is beautifully illustrated and contains some great songs for young kids to sing. The CD that comes with the book has lovely child singer examples as well as solo piano accompaniment for each of the songs. My only complaint is that the English translations of the songs are not very singable -- they seem to be more literally translated from Korean. If I had my pick, I'd love a literal translation, with a more singable set of lyrics in English, especially if these are meant to be sung by young children. Great resource overall -- it's clear that Korea has a strong repertoire of music for young children.

Great Piano/Singalong book

My children love this book. I would consider it mostly a piano book. I love the fact that there is a companion CD. We play the CD often and although my children are in a English speaking home, they were easily able to pickup the lyrics and sing the song after a few times. Each song has a small background story and some of the songs have suggested motions. I have bought this for other parents who want to assimilate Korean culture in the home and would definitely recommend this book.
