The workbook is great its almost all in Korean so its good so you can learn to read and write Korean. The Phonetic Symbols will not help you if you are American. Please do not try to learn the Phonetic Symbols it is a waist of time. It will be easier to learn how to read Korean.

I like this book

I like this book, BUT it's not completely usable with out the accompanying textbook. A few people mentioned in their reviews that purchasing the textbook was not necessary, but I disagree. The workbook specifically references the chapters of the textbook, and there are some exercises that cannot be done without the textbook.

That being said, I will be buying the textbook because I appreciate the exercises in this workbook. Practice is important for language learning, and this book helps with that. There's a CD included so you can practice listening as well as writing. I think it's a good book.

Great workbook with exercises that really make the grammar and chapter vocabulary stick. However, I would recommended studying Korean diligently and mastering the alphabet before purchasing this. 화이팅!

This is not a do-it-yourself book. The title even says it is an "introduction" to the language. I found it very helpful, and personally easy to use. Each section is purposeful, with an intro discussing how intonations and consonants can change the word, and how it is based on the closest English pronunciation as best as it could. (It has better phonetics than other Beginning Lao books out there, and there are not many options.) The sections are divided into basic conversational language, grammatical use, and reading/writing exercises. This book is not meant to be used alone, you definitely need a Lao/English Dictionary and probably someone Lao to fine-tune the pronunciation. My Lao friends were able to understand me after the first two lessons! As in many languages, there are sometimes differences in "casual" speech and proper speech, but they do say that you would use the examples given in the book for proper speech. This is more of a workbook a teacher would assign students given to support a Lao lesson.

This is the only Laos grammar book on the market.

Since this is the only Laos grammar book on the market, those of us who are interested in learning are forced to use it. The pages are not formatted well, having an amatuerish feel to the layout. The sentence diagrams are very confusing and the print is small. It takes a little extra effort to learn the language simply because the book is not formatted aesthetically. Otherwise, the grammar is fine, although it is a must to get the Lao-English Dictionary to implement what is learned in the grammar book. This book is the only game in town so we have to use it, but it needs another edition to fix the layout.

not very good

I am Laotion and wanted to be up to date on my language skills, so I purchased this book a couple of years ago to expand my Lao vocabulary. I noticed that some of the words are wrong, not just spelled wrong, but are of a totally different subject! Also, the diagram for the different Lao tones at the beginning of the book are difficult and complicated to understand. It's not clear on how to pronounce each tone. For a language that is based on tones, I think it's better just to buy a book w/ a cd rom so you can hear exactly how the tones are pronounced. I was extremely disapointed w/ this book.

A tough language like English can be made easy!

This book is EXCELLENT for a 2nd level ESL students practicing English. I tutor English to a couple of immigrants, and I have seen a fair share of good and bad books for teaching English. The "English Made Easy" books definitely belong in the "good" pile! At the beginning of every chapter of this book, they introduce a couple of vocabulary words in lists. Then they proceed to introduce some words using illustrations. They also show realistic conversations through very simple comic strips. In some of the chapters, there are exercises so English learners can fill in the blanks to finish the conversations in the comic strips. There are also a couple of other exercises in the book that allows ESL students to identify vocabulary words and use correct grammar. And occasionally, the scenarios are funny, so those with a good sense of humor will certainly appreciate this book.

It's preferable for students to go through the chapters of this book in sequential order. However, some students may be able to jump around the chapters and still be able to learn English fine. Either way, this is a valuable resource to students. Depending on how many ESL students are studying together, you can have them act out the conversations, write stories about the situations, and even add more to the stories.

This book by Jonathan Crichton was easy to use and was very user friendly by both the teacher and student. One complaint was there were over a dozen references to people, places and things that were entirely British and substitution had be made for the student who is living in America. Otherwise the book was very useful.

Required reading!

This book should be required reading for every executive of every major company. The average lifespan of a company in the S&P 500 today is about 12 years - primarily due to disruptive change that we see in virtually every industry. To survive and thrive, companies need to learn how to be ambidextrous - that is, not only to be able to exploit their current products, but also able to explore and develop new products. The vast majority of companies fail at being ambidextrous. In this book, Charles O' Reilly and Michael Tushman provide an essential guide to explaining why companies fail, and what it takes to achieve ambidexterity and solve the innovator's dilemma.

A timely and worthy successor to both the Prof's earlier work Winning through Innovation. Chapter 2 Explore and Exploit for me was an eye opener and is alone worth the price of the book. A must read for all senior management teams and aspiring professionals too !

A Wonderful Guide

Craig Sensei has done a wonderful job with this treatise that remains the foremost primer on Iado. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Iado, Kenjutsu or Japanese culture in general. It has been quite a long time since I first read this book and having recently picked it up again I felt compelled to post a review and state that it is still at the forefront.

Iai: The Drawing of the Sword is an excellent

work documenting a little known style of

japanese swordsmanship called iai-do, or,

"The Way of the drawing of the sword".

This style of martial art centers on the act

of drawing one's sword as quickly and

efficiently as possible. A person well adept

at it is capable of tossing a fruit into the

air, stepping back, drawing his weapon,

slicing the fruit and resheathing before the

orange halves can hit the ground. It is a

deadly poetry of motion to behold.

Mr.Craig continues to teach this and other

traditional martial arts at his Dojo in

Houston, Texas. He attained the title of

Shi-han or "Master Teacher" in 1973. This

title is rarely given to westerners. I've

visited and talked with Mr. Craig and must

say he is an honorable man and a competent

sensei.

Iai: The Art of Drawing the Sword is good as a refresher, at best. Craig opens his tome with some personal history and stories, which is a fine method of doing things, until he brings his own opinion into it. He gives the impression that spiritualism should account for most everything in iaido; as most practitioners are aware, spiritualism is only one aspect, and technique is equally or more important.
Throughout the book, Craig provides small interludes detailing Japanese history, and other information, some of which is accurate, some of which is very much exaggerated, and some of which is not true. While the thought was nice, he should have researched his facts more.
The drawings accompanying his descriptions of the kata are sketchy and vague; a beginner would have difficulty following them, although someone with grounding in another Japanese sword art such as kenjitsu may have better luck. However, with knowledge of the kata, or at least of the mechanics of the motions, a reader would find this book a helpful reminder, as long as he does not try to base his study entirely on this book.
Overall, this is not a terrible book, but there are much better on the subject, with regards to technique, illustration, and history.

About the Author
John Matthews has produced a number of successful divinatory systems based on early spiritual beliefs—including the best selling Arthurian Tarot (with Caitlin Matthews and Miranda Gray), The Wildwood Tarot (with Mark Ryan and Will Worthington), The Green Man Tree Oracle (with Will Worthington), The Celtic Animal Oracle and Grail Tarot (with Giovanni Casselli). Wil Kinghan is a writer, artist and explorer of the Hermetic and Celtic traditions. He studied Archeology at University College Dublin, and Environmental Design at NCAD in the 1980s. He left advertising to form his own company and develop his art and writing. This is different

This is a lovely book and deck set, the box is incredible sturdy as are the cards. The book comes in handy because the artwork based on the 1500's may be a little to a lot harder to interpret them as you would Rider Waite. I love the images in particular the magician, a mans head with a dragons body wow! An example is the Death card and the extract refers to the rise of Adolf Hitler. The book is 160 pages long with good descriptions of the cards as well a picture of the card, so no getting lost. There are also some tarot spreads at the end of the book. I like this book and admire the authors for their hard work, I can imagine translating from Latin and cryptic artwork was no easy feat. Mysterious Secrets of the Past

How intriguing! Lost manuscripts, cryptic revelations, mysterious prophecies - and, a beautifully crafted deck that feels as if I discovered it in an ancient medieval crypt! What I love most about this tarot set, beside the research and thought that went into its creation, is how well it blends the occult, alchemy, and Western mysticism into one beautiful and magical tool. Wil's enhancement of the original artwork is stunning - I feel as though I am working with an original deck from the Middle Ages. John and Caitlín Matthew's work is always superb and I am honored to include another of John's tarot decks in my collection.

II love this deck. Why? Here's why. First, mo pips. Second, the artwork is borderline alchemical, but not overwhelming incryptic; very pure simple symbolism. 3 The artwork itself is not outstanding, but given it was done by nostradamus brother, it has a real sense of reality. 4 the cards themselves are a good size, print quality is very good, the card stock is heavy. 5 the book is very well written, mine was all English, a good size, not miniature.6 I hate buying stuff from mainland China cause I know the workers there are getting screwed, but the price is way low. Outstanding deck

Very simple book, a lot of papers

I bought this kit in order to restart my long forgotten hobby: origami. It was a disappointment. The book is ridiculously easy with very few interesting models. The only thing left to remember from this specific purchase are the 98 sheets of paper that I use with the other books I purchased. If you want to give this to a kid below 10 years old, go for it. If you are an adult, there are much better deals out there.

The mainstay of my spiritual reading

I have hesitated to review this book because I didn't feel I could do it justice. As other reviewers have reported, I too have found this the epitome of insight among the mountain of Buddhist/Zen/Hindu books I have read over the last twenty years. Razor sharp and chock-full of mind-enlightening insights. This is the one book I ALWAYS take with me on retreats or long vacations--the first book I turn to when I feel spiritually stale. I have yet to plumb its depths. I only wish I could meet and sit with the author in his Zendo in Germany. He has my undying gratitude for writing such a clear, illuminating book.

I have read literally hundreds of books on the philosophy of zen, buddhism, and advaita, but this book is one the clearest discussions of the process, the seeing, and the realization. Best of all, it sounds completely unpretentious and real. I very strongly recommend this book to anyone involved in awakening!

It centers on Ximen Qing, a wealthy, young, dissolute, and politically connected merchant, and his marriage to a fifth wife, Pan Jinlian, literally "Golden Lotus." In her desire to influence her husband and, through him, control the other wives, concubines, and entire household, she uses sex as her main weapon. The Golden Lotus lays bare the rivalries within this wealthy family while chronicling its rise and fall. It fields a host of vivid characters, each seeking advantage in a corrupt world.

The author of The Golden Lotus is Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng, whose name, a pseudonym, means "Scoffing Scholar of Lanling." His great work, written in the late Ming but set in the Song Dynasty, is a virtuoso collection of voices and vices, mixing in poetry and song and sampling different social registers, from popular ballads to the language of bureaucrats, in order to recreate and comment mordantly on the society of the time.

This edition features a new introduction by Robert Hegel of Washington University, who situates the novel for contemporary readers and explains its greatness as the first single-authored novel in the Chinese tradition. This translation contains the complete, unexpurgated text as translated by Clement Egerton with the assistance of Shu Qingchun, later known as Lao She, one of the most prominent Chinese writers of the twentieth century. The translation has been pinyinized and corrected.

About the Author
Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng wrote The Golden Lotus during the early years of the Wanji era (1573—1620) of the Ming Empire. Nothing certain is known of Lanling's life.

Clement Egerton was at various times a senior officer in the British army, an Anglican bishop, and a writer, editor, linguist, and prolific photographer, but he is best known for his enduring translation of The Golden Lotus.

Shu Qingchun boarded with Clement Egerton and his wife when he was a lecturer in Chinese at the School of Oriental Studies in London, but he became famous as the Beijing novelist and dramatist Lao She, whose best-known work may be Rickshaw Boy. He was killed, or committed suicide, during the Cultural Revolution.

Robert Hegel is the Liselotte Dieckmann Professor of Comparative Literature and a professor of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literatures at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

About the Author
Ashley P. Martin is a martial arts enthusiast who started training in Shotokan Karate in 1992. He is the founder of Just Karate, a martial arts school based in Cambridge, England. Martin is also a martial arts writer, having authored other books such as How to Improve at Karate and How to Improve at Judo.

Comical It's So Bad

I borrowed this book/DVD set from the library on a whim, and was leafing through the book when I noticed a some pictures in the Ground Fighting chapter that were straight out an entry-level jiu jitsu class when the instructor says, "never do this". After studying various martial arts for a decade, I couldn't believe that the author was advocating passing a closed guard with one arm inside and the other outside of the opponent's locked legs, not to mention pictures of arm bars with the opponent's thumb pointing in the wrong direction, making the submission largely ineffective. Then I flipped back through to the standup fighting techniques and began to notice some things that had evaded my first perusal: a ball-of-the-foot roundhouse kick, and the kind of old-school karate blocks look pretty badass in a kata, but will get you beaten to a pulp on the street. While there are some effective, proven techniques in this book, there are also some maneuvers that could either get you hurt, or, in a best-case scenario, laughed at.
Thinking that the DVD could only be better, I gave that a try. This was pure comedy, showcasing two stickly guys throwing half speed punches with the form of eight-year-old girls. I can't believe this footage hasn't gone viral yet. There was little to no editing as they were constantly readjusting the four tumbling mats that they had set up, and were often whispering instructions to one another. At one point, the sound of a fire truck siren lingered outside of the building until they shut off the microphone and continued in silence. I won't even get into this DVD's other home-movie production values. Anyway, the whole thing was so bad, it was good.
I would not recommend this to anyone unless they needed a good laugh.

Very basic and focused on fundamental elements of modern MMA techniques. A good quick read before getting further involved in any of the topics included within.
