Wonderful series!!

I love this series of books for my classroom. They've been wonderful for me to read and review and also for my students to read. The illustrations are great, the information is comprehensive and at a child's level, making it great for adults who don't know anything about it to pick up.

great value, perfect size

I've been making fairly heavy use of this dictionary and find it indispensible. While there are some words missing (the most surprising being "tanpa", without!), it's quite complete for its size and price. You do need to know the root form of verbs to look some of them up, which requires a little knowledge of the language, but all in all it's a great buy.

For a tourist muddling through, not for serious learners

Dictionaries that, for most entries, simply give a selection of foreign words for an English word with no explanation of how they are used, are only of a limited use to a serious language learner. This is one such dictionary. A good dictionary will strive to give contextual clues for the usage of the various translations, and several common expressions and idioms that are related to the words you are looking up or working with. A further complaint, and a quirk of Indonesian resource writers that I can't copmprehend, is that most resources you buy these days do NOT make any attempt to mark in the occurence of the difference in pronunciation of "e" that occurs in some very common words. I can never see why, as the learner is lost without this guidence! The problem is that for Indonesian, there are so few, if any reasonably-prices dictionaries that are of any real benefit to the language learner. As it happens, and thanks to the 2003 edition of "Teach Yourself Indonesian" (which does, incidentally take into account the pronunciations of "e", as does the old version! Incidentally, I recommend the current edition of "Teach Yourself Indonesian" hands-down for anyone considering learning Indonesian - It's fantastic!), there IS a good dictionary available, but is isn't available through any of the Amazon sites. It is, to my knowledge, only available through OUP (Oxford University Press) Australia and it's called "The Oxford Indonesian Starter Dictionary". It's much better than the one I'm reviewing here!

The Best Pocket Dictionary You Will Find!

This is pretty much the best cheap, pocket-sized Indonesian dictionary you can find. Given the size, you obviously can't expect it to be truly comprehensive or to give exhaustive advice on when to use certain words or how to pronounce them (luckily, Indonesian is almost completely phonetically written so this is not a major issue), but it will give you the most reliable translation of most words you will need.
It is also very accurate, free of the errors that abound in most of the cheap, locally published dictionaries you would find in Indonesia itself. I would definitely recommend it to travellers, though of course "serious" language learners will also need to have heavier dictionaries they would probably never lug around the archipelago.
In fact I can share a tip with those headed for Indonesia: local editions of this dictionary (recognizable by having the same authors, a tiny size and a red plastic cover - also by checking the scanned image of it uploaded here) are readily available in Gramedia bookstores in major cities of Indonesia for a fraction of the price overseas.

About the Author
Born in Oxford, England in 1953, Christopher Earnshaw studied calligraphy and Japanese studies at Daito Bunka University in Tokyo and classical Japanese and Chinese through London University. He has held several exhibitions both privately and as the group Terakoya, in Japan and abroad. Receiving his master's license Shodo Kyojusha Shikaku Ninteisho in calligraphy in 1978, he exhibited several times in the Mainichi exhibition, the first time being in 1979 and received a gold prize in the twentieth All Japan Calligraphy exhibition. Presently he lives with his family near Kobe, Japan and works for a British pharmaceutical company.

Fascinating material marred by poor presentation

I received this book, along with "Brush Writing" and the Takase CD vol. 1, as a gift recently. I am finding each of them useful in its way, but this is the book that I most wish were better.

"Sho" covers quite a large range of subject matter--everything from interviews with sho masters to tips on selling your work at exhibitions to instructions on carving in wood, with little sidelights like Japanese monograms and brushes made of mouse hairs (and yes, there are step-by-step photos of actual brush calligraphy, too). Unfortunately, lots of these topics are discussed in just enough detail to make me want more, but not enough to satisfy me. The book lacks focus. In this respect, "Brush Writing" is much better--its author has wisely (I think) decided that a beginning text is not the place to drag in every topic under the sun related to sho. (Perhaps "Sho" is not meant to be a beginning text, but that's part of the same problem--I can't tell whether it's aimed at me, a novice, or at an expert, or at someone in between.)

Organization is a weak point as well. How to line your work (the equivalent, more or less, of matting/framing it) and sell it is discussed well before we get around to making basic strokes with ink on paper. Interviews are plopped in the middle of the book. There are two different discussions on brushes--one near the beginning, the other near the end. There's a blow-by-blow critique of a work in the author's collection that gives some real insight into how an artist imbued his work with emotion, but it uses technical terms that aren't introduced till later in the book. Take a look at the Table of Contents--I think you'll agree that it's all over the place. Great if you're a browser, not so hot if you're not.

Finally, and this is a big one for me, the typography of the book is just awful. It seems to have been produced on a dedicated word processor with a daisywheel printer (anyone remember those?) or something similar. Boldface print is clearly just overstrike. There is no italic. The font is something from the typewriter era. The book is formatted in two narrow columns per page, which are right-and-left justified with no hyphenation, producing many lines that have huge gaps between the words. It's painfully unattractive, to the point of being difficult to read. In a book presumably meant to appeal to Westerners who are interested in an aesthetic of writing, the ugly typography is a major flaw.

Having said all this, I'll repeat--the book contains a great deal of information which fascinated me, and I'm glad I own it. But if I'd seen it in a store, I'd never have purchased it.

In any case, do yourself a favor and order the Takase CD, which contains something like thirty videos of the sensei writing characters and critiquing student efforts, in addition to the usual written text about materials, posture, strokes, and so on. The videos on this CD will make any book you choose much more understandable.

A true tool for spiritual growth...

I found this book to offer a complete in-depth analysis and discussion on the importance of Japanese calligraphy from a historical and spiritual reference point. There are many books in my opinion that offer novice information on the stylist qualities and brush stroke procedures, but not many of them focus on the deep history & spiritual connection that mastering the art of calligraphy can bring. The book explains that as your body & mind master the physical art of calligraphy, the spirit becomes enlightened and strong. It explains how great Zen teachers, warriors & emperors increased their proficiency in brush writing and as a result enabled them to reflect a high degree of inner character & self-discipline. Simply a fabulous read and reference for all of us who strive to improve ourselves and understand more of the inner workings and benefits of Japanese calligraphy. A+++

A "non-native" English reader takes a look at "SHO..."

This book is quite nice. It offers a good historical background about Japanese Calligraphy, with a lot of stories by famous calligraphers, interviews, and so on. There are also some useful informations on how to display/exhibit your own work. On the other hand, I found it a bit short about the character writng in itself, there isn't enough information on the way/order of the strokes. I recomend this book in adition with one which has a more technical and basic approach, such as "Brush Writing - A practical guide for begginers". I have the two of them and they seem quite complementary.

About the Author
Richard Mason graduated from Cambridge University. He received his Ph.D. from the Australian National University where he subsequently lectured on Japanese history as a member of the Faculty of Asian Studies for over thirty years. Dr. Mason is also the author of Japan's First General Election (Cambridge University Press, 1969). Now retired, he continues to live and work in Canberra.

John Caiger was born in Japan, graduated from Sydney University,and studied history at the University of London. He earned his Ph.D. from the Australian National University before joining its Faculty of Asian Studies where he has lectured since 1966.

A tiny if very complete history

The History Of Japan by R. H. P. Mason and J. G. Caiger is a very small yet very complete book of Japanese history and culture, from 10,000 BC up to the 1950s. Maps, photos, quotes and a small bibliography add delight and swift understanding to a very complex subject. Perfect gift for a person just showing interest in Japanese or Asian history. Deals with the major points, the changing twists and turns, in Japan during its history. It also deals with the culture, the religions, the development of city life, the arts, the political and industrial changes with just the right amount of information.

A mostly concise, very informative read on Japanese history.

Note: The context of my reading of this book was in that of a class room setting, so some information may have been made more clear after lecture and not because of the book itself.

In "A History of Japan: Revised Edition" the whole of a. Japan's history is covered up to the 1950s. From the original historical references of ancient Chinese scribes to the imperial documents of the Meiji period and beyond, this book manages to cover quite a lot of ground in a little bit of time, and it manages to do so with a nearly concise telling. I say nearly concise because the book tends to get bogged down in a generous procession of name-dropping and the occasional fluffed bit information. The authors are not attempting to pad their book by any means, so rest assured the price you pay is certainly worth the information you receive, just be prepared for reread a few sections in an attempt to filter out superfluous information and cut through the occasional fluff. Documents and references are provided for each chapter via footnotes, so you skeptics can fact check the fine work of these historians. Overall it was a great educational experience, despite the sparse moments of information overload. I highly recommend reading it, if you're at all interested in Japanese history.

Man's guide to living in society

This book gives its readers a set of principles which when put to use can be the key to learning how to enjoy life in society in a civilized way. Definitely a must for every parent trying to raise a child in these must difficult times. This book gives you words that transcend race, religion and/or socioeconomic boundaries. If you are looking for a book that will leave you a better person than when you started reading it, then, THIS IS IT!

Worth it

I love the entire Kung Fu Series and while I had access to the on line resources of all the quotes and plot lines from Kung Fu, this book arrived and organized them well, making the reference useful to me. Sometimes I just open the book and get a bit of wisdom from Master Po, Caine or Master Kan.

I found the book at a "bargain rate" less than $50 including shipping. I noted the prices have soared over $100. I wonder why. I don't think I'd pay $100 for it, but it was worth the price I paid.

Not as good as anticipated

Not as good as anticipated. Years ago, the wisdom of Kung Fu came out in LP vinyl.It had both the music and also the actual quotations from the masters taken from the show. It was outstanding and I have tried to find it in cd format for years. I thought the book would be like that but it was not.

About the Author
Rick McDaniel was born in Indiana and attended college in New Brunswick, Canada, where he continues to live. He taught at the University of New Brunswick and Saint Thomas University before working in International Development with the YMCA. He is the creator of the YMCA Peace Medallion. He is also the creator and author of a five-part documentary series, 80/20: A Developing World and coauthor of the textbook A Two Way Approach to Understanding: Issues in Global Education. Dr. McDaniel studies at the Montreal Zen Center with teacher Albert Low.

A delight from cover to cover

It's unusual to read a book of profound Buddhist teachings like you would a best-selling novel, but that's what will happen. Every time you reflect on one of these profound stories of the masters ( that vary in length from several sentences to several pages) it will increase your appetite to read more, and so over several days the book will be completely devoured. Then, your hunger satisfied it will be time to go back and read it again, giving each gem passage the attention it deserves.

Before there was Zen in Japan, there was Chan (Zen) in China. This book follows that Chinese lineage from Bodhidharma through Wumen, and like the porridge of fairytales, it's just right in content and length. There are other lengthier books following these lineages, but this is book is manageable. Koans are frequently addressed and put into context. It was wonderful to find the author put sayings like "If you encounter the Buddha, slay him...." into its context over several pages. If you have been practicing Buddhism you will be familiar with many of the passages, and welcome seeing these old friends in their historical context. If new to Buddhism this will whet your appetite, encouraging you to go further along the path.

This book is an enjoyable read from start to finish. Dr. McDaniel has done a remarkable job of relating these tales in a form that everyone, academic or non-academic alike, can savor. Each story is clear and told in an understandable way by a great teacher.

Worth the money

This is a pretty cool book. I figured it would be interesting but I actually really clicked with it. It's well written and easy to read. It doesn't feel like you're reading an essay on Buddhist history. It's a mixture of history, folklore and intertwined in that mix are Koan's. Some nights i'd just read a few pages and put the book down and stare at the ceiling - the result of some really mind bending koan's. Other nights i'd read a chapter. The other surprising thing that sort of makes it an experience is the book itself. It has really cool fonts, images, cool Zen'ish icons or logo's throughout. The pages are dark and feel thicker, the cover is a nice dark red...all things you'd think are irrelevant but make for a fun read. The Forward by Albert Low and Preface set the tone. In a sea of books on Buddhisim this book stands out and is worth the money. I would definitivley highly recommend it.

About the Author
Caroline Self has studied Asian brush painting for over thirty years. She holds a B. A. in bacteriology and public health, a teaching credential in art from UC Berkeley and a master's degree in art education and sculpture from San Diego State University. She taught art in the San Diego City Schools for twenty-five years and taught Asian brush painting to children for six years at the San Diego Museum of Art. She has studied traditional brush painting with teachers in Southern California, Japan, China, and Taiwan. She also paints and exhibits her colorful watercolor and acrylic paintings.

Susan Self studied art in college and on trips to Europe and Asia. She has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from UC San Diego, where she taught in writing programs.

very nice intro

I've done Western art, which concentrates more on physical form, and line. Ink Brush painting is very different. It is more an art of feeling, of meditative brush strokes which suggest much more than first glance might see. Landscapes are particularly nicely done. Leonardo da Vinci introduced sfumato, I think it's called, the bluing and blurring of distant mountains. Chinese ink brush painting does it, with watercolors. This book is a very nice intro to this art. I did have some formal training, years ago, but other than that, I'm self-taught. This is a nice addition to my library on this subject. Useful examples and how-to ideas.

I have always loved ancient Asian art there is something about the texture of the landscapes that just thrill me I am learning from this and several other books and although I have no talent this book is a great read for me.

Fabulous tale of medieval Japan, moving and insightful

A man, at the end of his long life, looks back at it and reflects on it. Popularly but erroniously seen as a romantic/tragic figure, he tells the truth of his life, and in so doing gives the reader an incomparable view of early medieval Japan (Kamakura period), the evolution of Japan from an aristocratic to martial society and makes one reflect on what we believe to be history. This is the saga of a peasant boy who rises to being almost a general, and the tale of how an incredibly cynical man becomes a Buddhist. Well written, fascinating to read, impeccably researched and very accurate. Not an 'action story', but the book has some excellent battle scenes. The only book I could compare it to is Bernard Cornwall's retelling of the Arthurian legends - the "Winter King" trilogy. Donald Richie is well known for his skill and expertise in writing on Japan and his other books are recommended as well.
I found the book hard to put down. In reading my review please bear in mind that I have a tremendous interest in Japanese history (lived there, speak some Japanese) so I'm guessing when I say I think it would appeal to anyone who would like to read such a warrior's tale. Also I suspect the book will primarily appeal to males.

Memoirs of the warrior without the morality.

This is a historical novel that was constructed mainly on the basis of Kumagai's memoirs. This work depicts in detail one of the most important socio-political transition of Japan and its society (the Kamakura shogunate establishment) that took place thanks to the elimination of the Taira clan during the Genpei war (1180 - 1185 AD). The famous samurai code with its rules and the emphasis of the loyalty to the lord have their roots in these events. I really do not like Kumagai, who is a central character of this book, because he was not the warrior of honour. He was a very lucky, materialistic man with a ''highly flexible'' morality who killed his opponents in combat mainly due to the fact that he was able to achieve the berserker-like state very fast and sustain it long enough.

I bought this for my son because it is about an ancestor of our family in Japan. It's not my kind of novel, but he tells me it's well done and, of course, of great interest to a descendant of the Warrior Kumagai.

Available for the first time, The Tao of Gung Fu includes not only insights into and descriptions of various Chinese martial arts, but Eastern and Western fitness methodologies, the difference between external and internal martial methods, sketches of martial arts and self-defense techniques, a contrast of various gung fu schools in China, Lee's personal scrapbook, and his famous thesis "The Tao of Gung Fu" which he wrote while attending the University of Washington.

Get The Real Message

This is a good book in that a reader can get a clearer idea of who Bruce Lee was. One reviewer was quite rude and unfair to Bruce Lee, took offense to the man as though he had written the book. Bruce Lee's writings were made into a book, Bruce Lee did not write nor construct the book. So appreciating that fact, it's fair to say that a reader gets a pretty good idea as to what type of prerson Bruce Lee was. Bruce Lee did study philosphy and he shared a lot of what he learned from others as well as his own personal views and opinions. Any true Bruce Lee fan knows Bruce never presented himself as "the one who knew everything" he tried to inspire and/or guide people to be themselves, find the true meaning of themselves an not be fixed, labeled, a copy, tied to any set thing or boxed into something with no way for self expression. And not just to be applied to the Martial Arts but in life as well. I think the insulting reader was confused by the deeper meaning of Bruce's writings and what he preceived to be "Bruce the great philosopher". The reader didn't get the real message, that if there is value in any book, as there is with this book (better insight and inspiration)then it should be recommended. Bruce Lee's writings should be appreciated for the content of what was originally from Bruce, his writings in this book should be looked upon to help people gain a better understanding of the thoughts and principles that guided him-Bruce Lee. If some people are inspired to follow his principles or those of whom he learned from, I think that's the point. If a reader has already made up in his or her mind that Bruce Lee's writings are not "real philosophy" or at least based on "real philosophy" then don't buy the book. In my opinion, this book would still be a good book no matter whose writings they were.

The pre-JKD Bruce

This book described his study of Kung Fu before it melted down into JKD. From a historical perspective, this is a very valuable book, because one can trace the root and development of JKD from traditional Kung Fu. I am especially surprised to see the section on set/form practice, which he abandoned completely later on. Bruce had a deep understanding of Kung Fu at a young age and he was way ahead of his time. I am glad that all of this information was preserved and made available to the public.
