All of which was sanitized out when first published in 1937.

About the Author
Shi Naian is one of the respected elders of Chinese literature. In addition to authoring Water Margin, he was also the teacher of Lo Kuan-chung, author of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

J. H. Jackson first came into contact with Chinese culture through his involvement with Presbyterian missionary efforts. His translation of The Water Margin was the first to closely follow the text of the Chinese original. It was his only translated work.

Edwin Lowe is Associate Lecturer of Chinese Studies in the Department of Asian Studies at Macquarie University, Sydney. He researches Chinese strategic and defense studies, comparative cultural and philosophical approaches to warfare, and the evolving nature of conflict and warfare.

Good literature poorly translated

This book, if translated differently, might have rated four or five stars, but I find it hard to believe that the translator is a native English speaker. The book is rife with poor word choices typical of computerized translation or of someone using a Chinese-English dictionary without a good grasp of English. Some areas are polished, and read very well; unfortunately these are what I read while browsing in the bookstore. But many others left me puzzling over the poor word choices, and seriously detracted from both the flow of the novel and my enjoyment of it.

Entertaining but troubling considering it's historical impact

One of the Chinese classics, this is at times a disturbing tale of a large group of bandits that, while they themselves are corrupt (constantly bribing people, killing opponents and their families), unite to fight even more corrupt local officials while pledging loyalty to the the most corrupt figure of all -- the emperor! There are many entertaining stories, however, and colorful characters. It's interesting that the current leader in China, Xi Jinping, said he "admires" the bandit leader, Song Jiang. Perhaps it is because Song Jiang pledged unconditional loyalty to the Emperor.

I agree with other criticisms that the editing leaves something to be desired, which was a surprise considering how long this book has been in print and the number of revisions done.

A wonderfull chinese clasic novel

When I read this books approximately fifteen years ago, it astonished me with its beautiful story telling that cause addiction to it.

An eastern variant of Robin Hood story, only different in figures. If in original Robin Hood story, Robin Hood was became central figure; but in Water Margin, there were 108 figures with different kinds of back grounds which represented 108 ancient eastern astrological signs.

It was telling a story about a band of heroes who fight against injustice of corrupted Song Court, under administration of prime minister Kao. The fight was so dramatic to its detailed that making reader's heart to pound hardly.

Even this current version is still emanating the same light as previous read books.

If one of my friends like Robin Hood story, I will absolutely recommend The Water Margin since they will probably have a high chance to like it too.

About the Author
Patrick McCarthy is one of the few foreigners to actually teach karate-do in Japan. Moreover, he is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on the civil fighting traditions of Okinawa. He is also the first Caucasian to ever be awarded the coveted Kyoshi Seventh Dan Teacher's License from Kyoto's prestigious Dai Nippon Butokukai. He has been practicing karate-do for over thirty years, and has also studied Taijiquan, White Crane, Hung Gar, Monk Fist, and Five Ancestors Fist gongfu.

During the mid-seventies, while pursuing a successful competitive career, McCarthy met the "Harvard Professor of the Martial Arts", Master Richard Kim, a disciple of whose he subsequently became in 1977. A holder of a Butokukai Hanshi Ninth Dan Master's license, Kim Sensei emphasized the importance of studying karate's nonutilitarian elements. As a result of Master Kim's influence, McCarthy undertook a deep study of karate's history and philosophy, the research for which continues to this day.

His research has brought him not only to Japan, but also Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the People's Republic of China. With an extensive background in both the Okinawan and Chinese fighting arts, McCarthy was in a unique position to research the most profound and influential document in the history of karate-do, the Bubishi. Since that time, he has interviewed and trained with the world's top masters of gongfu and karate-do while unraveling the history of this document and the fighting systems associated with it.

After moving to Japan in 1985, he became Master Kim's personal representative in Japan and in 1987 established the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society (IRKRS) as an outgrowth of his research. IRKRS is a non-profit, nonpolitical group of researchers and practitioners of budo, dedicated, but not limited, to the analysis, preservation, and promotion of karate-do.
Mr. McCarthy is a frequent contributor to martial arts magazines throughout the world, author of The Classical Kata of Okinawan Karate, Beyond Physical Training, Kata: Karate's Paragon of Mystery, and translator of Miyagi Chojun's 1934 Outline of Karate-do, The Secrets of Wudang Boxing, Taira Shinken's 1964 Ryukyu Kobudo Taikan, The Matsumura and Itosu Precepts, and the 1936 Meeting of the Okinawan Masters.

Mr. McCarthy travels around the world lecturing on karate history and philosophy, kata applications, the Bubishi, and kobudo. He can be contacted for such seminars through the publisher.

Interesting, but keep some perspective . . . .

This book is quite interesting as an historical document. It is, by the author's own admission, incomplete and at times was uninterpretable. As a piece of martial arts history - it is a treasure. One can begin to see how a martial art migrated, was passed on and even how it influenced and influenced by, other styles. There are, of course, many unanswered questions. The Bubushi was undoubtedly of great value, but grammatical errors and uninterpretable, obsolete Chinese characters and time have made the true meanings of many of the parts, unknowable.
What I came away with was, judging by the scope of knowlege the Bubushi covers, the martial arts practitioner of the past was a well rounded individual in the truest sense. Science, medicine, anatomy and philosophy as well as the martial techniques were all a part of the makeup of the martial artist.
There are too many limitations to make the Bubishi a modern martial arts bible. Among others, there are really NO complete training guidelines, the medicine/treatments are incomplete, and the lethal striking points are unexplained (i.e. WHERE to strike may be explicitly documented, but HOW to strike and with what technique, and how hard is not addressed).
As a book (hopefully one of many) the student of martial arts would study to understand the roots of their art, I would say it is a good read. As an instructional tome I would be quite wary. The author points out the limitations of his reasearch. He is aware of the shortcomings of the final product and he cautions the reader appropriately. But he has given us a fascinating view of the past, cobbled together and distorted as it is.
So beware. This book is like being the last one in line at a game of telephone. We hear what has been passed on by the previous person, but do not really know if it is a complete and accurate interpretation of the original. This is not the fault of the author, it is just what is....

An excellent, high quality book

I bought this book mainly for the first 40 pages or so. It is basically a history of the bubishi itself, but also gives an excellent overview of karate history in general, even though it is mostly previously known information.
It goes further than most karate history texts, including a good set of references about where the author found some of his information.
This, along with "Unante" by John Sells is the most read karate book in my library.
As for the actual Bubishi translation, I have it on good authority that it is an excellent translation from people who can read the original Japanese translation from which this is taken.
I personally didn't find the Bubishi sections on fighting and grappling particularly useful, but they do serve for good historical perspective.
Some very useful sections from the book include a glossary of terms with their kanji equivalents, something that I've found very useful for translating lists of people's names, names of kata etc...
The quality of the books is excellent, with very crisp, sharp photos liberally distributed through the text and an excellent index.
I do feel that this should probably rank high on most people's list of books to buy, especially if you are starting out and are interested in karate history.

True Chapter and Verse

Bible of Karate: Bubishi translated by Patrick McCarthy is an indispensable volume for the avid Karate-ka. A novice to Karate-do might do well to put off getting this volume until a more stable grounding in the art in attained. Otherwise, I say get it.
It contains no detailed explanation of technique but the section on the history and philosophy alone would make buying this book more than worth it's price. Those practicing Goju-ryu, Isshin-ryu, or Kyokushinkai varieties of Karate-do will find the origins of Kata, such as Sanchin and Seisan, given here most interesting. If technique is what you're looking for then get The Essence of Okinawan Karate-do by Shoshin Nagamine, ISBN 0-8048-2110-0, along with this book and you won't go wrong.
The Bible of Karate: Bubishi contains the descriptions of Chinese medicine, vital point striking, and strategy that informed the techniques of the Okinawan Masters. In and of themselves these explanations are inadequate introductions to these subjects. But that together as a book, that it became a volume treasured by the Okinawan Masters is of immense importance in that it give us helpful clues to the subjects these Karate-ka concerned themselves with and which they felt to be of vital importance to the advancement of their technique.

While I was reading this book, I was also reading "77 Samurai" by Lewis Bush, which is about Japan's first embassy to the United States. The two books presented interesting contrasts. "77 Samurai" gave a portrayal of Japanese people who were ready to open their doors to the outside world, after a self-imposed seclusion of 250 years, eager to learn everything they could. Less than one hundred years later, they were embarking on their conquest of China, Korea, and Souteast Asia with wanton disregard of human lives, as detailed in this book. These two books present the benevolent and the evil sides of human race. The question is, how can the same people act so differently and are the rest of us any different?
The books contains many first-hand accounts from the participants of the experiments in Unit 731, which lends the book much credibility.
Disturbing contents but very well written. A great read!

About the Author
Kenneth G. Henshall is a graduate of the universities of London (B.A.), Sydney (Ph.D.), and Adelaide (Dip. Ed.), and is now a senior lecturer in Japanese at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. He has also taught at the universities of Auckland, Western Australia, and California. Professor Henshall is well known for his translations of Japanese literature and is the author of A Guide to Learning Hiragana and Katakan.

Tetsuo Takagaki is a graduate of the universities of Wakayama (B.A.) and San Francisco State (M.A.), and is now a senior lecturer in Japanese at the University of Auckland. He has also taught at the universities of Hawaii and Maryland, and at Tsuda College in Tokyo. He is the author of a number of publications on Japanese language and linguistics.

Its a 4-star winner of its genre, 5-stars is still open

A formidable work which I found essential as a beginning student of Japanese. It will last a lifetime as a text, or at least until the first 996 kanji are completely memorised, which WILL be a lifetime for me. The kanji are ordered in grades according to the 6-grade system used in Japanese schools. I found this useful because this relates to the graded system of testing used in the international Japanese Language Proficiency Test. It's not the way Japanese learn kanji but it is a fascinating source-book for those studying Japanese as a second language. Henshall discounts many common explanations of the origin of kanji eg for EAST, whose common explanation of "sun rising behind trees" he debunks as an error of many centuries standing. I did not give the book 5-stars for the following reasons: (1) It lacks stroke order, so I constantly have to cross-check new kanji with my Kanji Dictionary. (2) It uses romanji. I have come to absolutely subscribe to the theory of my first Japanese language teacher who banned romanji from the classroom and loudly lamented the corruption of thought and understanding it imposed on students of Japanese. Why people who have the interest and motivation to study kanji would want to do so in romanji is certainly beyond my understanding. But obviously Henshall and his editors have given this matter weighty thought and decided otherwise. This book fully deserves 5-stars, but the opportunity for a 5-star kanji guide remains open to others.

An absolutely essential aid to understanding Japanese Kanji

Anyone attempting to learn the Japanese language quickly realizes that Kanji is the most difficult of the three Japanese alphabets to learn. Each kanji can have anywhere from 1 to 42(or so) strokes involved in writing it, and plain memorization is a Herculean task. Kenneth Henshall, however, has provided the divertable rivers with this book. Each of the 2000 standard Kanji that the Japanese have learned by the time they've finished school is indexed by the year it's learned, and each listing has the KUN and 'on' readings listed--just as in a Kanji Dictionary.. ..the difference is, Kenneth has researched each Kanji's origin as a picture or diagrammed idea, and explained the reason for the changes from that form under each Kanji. He has also included Mnemonic devices after each explanation of the origin of the Kanji, to help you remember what the Kanji is drawn like, why, and what each means..
I have found this book immensely helpful. As a straightforward Kanji Dictionary, it's only so-so, because it's not organized by stroke order or some similar method.. --but, knowing the reason for each line in a Kanji helps me to draw them correctly when I need to, interpret them correctly when I see them, and not accidentally add an extra piece to a Kanji that doesn't belong there. The Mnemonic devices weren't as helpful, to me--but they may help some.. --all in all, I found this book necessary in order to have any chance at all at remembering Kanji, and despite it's less than optimum potential as a Kanji Dictionary, it works well enough that I don't have to buying one until I can afford it. Kanji are facinating, and I've caught myself reading this book when I should be studying.

A Big Help Learning Kanji

If you are learning Japanese, you probably already know that one of the most challenging elements is learning Kanji, the ideographic characters that make up a large portion of the written language. This book helps a lot with the Joyo Kanji, the nearly 2000 glyphs that are mandated by the Education Ministry for basic competence.

This book presents the characters in the order they are introduced to Japanese school children, so there's no risk of getting a complex, obscure Kanji until you are ready for them. Each character is introduced with its possible pronunciations and meaning, just like most other Kanji dictionaries.

The two things that make this book unique are the detailed "etymological" explanations of the formation of each character, and the suggested mnemonic devices for each glyph. The mnemonics are not always useful, and often you can come up with better ones yourself, but the explanation of the formations of the characters is outstanding. By understanding how the character was formed, you learn the various elements that make up all kanji, making them easier to learn as you go along. An additional benefit is that by knowing the origins of the character, you won't be thrown off when you happen upon kanji written using the old style, which depending on where you live and what you do, may be fairly often.

The only thing that I found disappointing about this book is that is doesn't give stroke-by-stroke instructions on writing most kanji. Granted, that would make the book a MUCH larger volume, but when faced with a 23-stroke monster, some idea of where to start writing it would be helpful. Of course, if you use a word-processor exclusively, you'll never need to know.

About the Author
Heino Engel studied architecture in Germany immediately following the end of World War II, then traveled through Egypt and Arabia, spent more than a year in India, Burma, Malaysia, and Thailand, before arriving in Japan. There, in his own words, he "realized that the Japanese house is as invaluable an experience for the contemporary architect as are the ancient Acropolis of Athens in Greece and the modern high-rise office towers of the United States." He remained in Japan for three years, concentrating on the study of the Japanese house, people, life, language, and culture, and also becoming a member of the Architectural Institute of Japan.

A great reference about japanese architecture

If you are an architect interested in japanese constructional systems, this is THE BOOK for you. If you aren't but find japanese culture a fountain of inspiration for living, you must read this extraordinary piece of art. Perhaps it don't shine like a jewel, but once you open it, you'll find the work of a man who decided to share his mastery. In this book, diagrams, materials, craftmanship, even detailed descriptions of the human space requirements are fully explained with precision and simplicity. Every page, and every example in them, is a world that must be carefully examined. And when doing so, you'll find that what the author is showing us, is more than a book about japanese houses: is the heart of the japanese carpenters and architects living in its pages.

Clearly Illustrates Traditional Japanese Construction

Anyone who wishes to build a Japanese tea room either in the garden or attached to their house could do well to start with this book. You can also use this book to design accents for a single room, or to craft an entire house. It was written by a German architect who lived in Japan several decades ago and carefully measured surving older buildings as well as studying architecture there. While there are more detailed books in Japanese, this may well still be the best available book in English.

Decent abridgment of a great book

This is a very short abridgment of a fantastic book: The Japanese House: A Tradition for Contemporary Architecture. Though that book is much more expensive, it is worth it if you are actually interested in the construction of a Japanese house. The original is nearly 500 pages, so just about four times longer.

That said, this does provide a decent overview of architectural principles, and an introduction to the philosophy behind Japanese construction. There are also a sizable number of floor plans, though the "250" number on the cover is misleading. The majority of these are tiny variations on the floor plan of a small teahouse, or variations on layout of a single room, and they are printed 14 to a page. (about 1.5 inches square)

After the floor plan section there follow sections on framing, on shoji screens, and on traditional exterior wall construction. These are a decent introduction to the purpose of shoji, but not extensive enough to allow construction of your own solely from this book.

Having read the original, this abridgment is occasionally choppy-sounding and since this book is printed smaller (about 7.5'' x 10'', while the original is 9'' x 11.5'') the pictures are not quite as clear. It is a decent overview of the origins, art and architecture, but is a poor substitution for the more complete version. If all you want is a quick overview in an easy to read package, this may suit your purposes nicely. If you are interested in adding Japanese flair without thorough-going authenticity, this may be perfect. But if you are interested in the details, in authentic reconstruction, or clear plans for everything from flooring to framing to roofing to shoji, doors, and layout, get the original.

Great Information for the beginner

If you're new to the topic of tea than Tea: The Drink that Changed the World by Laura Martin is the book for you. Beyond the expected coverage of how tea is consumed around the world the book includes a terrific load of basic information on the plant itself, how it is cultivated, managed, and harvested.

I'm well aware of the role tea has had in western history, especially in England and the U.S. I found the author's treatment of the role tea plays in virtually every major culture around the world very interesting. While not a long book, the coverage appears to me to be complete.

I found the rather extensive appendices at the end of the book to be particularly helpful. Tea and Health, Tea with Food, and Choice Teas from Around the World were very informative.

This book is loaded with great information.

Good look into the history of tea

Laura C. Martin gave the reader a good account of the history on tea and its intimacy with the history of man kind.

I was surprised with the brutality exercised by the British over the Chinese and Indians in order to profit from trading in tea and satisfying the social demand of the British. I have always viewed the British as benevolent and environmental conscious but this book changed that.

Some astounding historical events:
1. The European used tobacco and opium to trade with the Chinese for tea!

2. In 1830, the Chinese imported over 2.5 million pounds of Indian opium; controlled by the British!

3. From 1830 to 1840, the Chinese traded 366 tones of silver to the British, primarily for opium grown in India but controlled by the British.

4. When the Chinese captured and destroyed chests of opium worth nine million mexican silver dollars (one Mexican silver dollars was worth 2.5 pound in mid-nineteenth centry, which is about 169 pounds, or 355 US dollars today), the British sent warships to Canton , where they quickly and efficiently destroyed the Chinese army. The result was the Treaty of Nanking, signed on august 29, 1842. In addition, England was awarded "most favoured nation" status in China. The Chinses were forced to pay for the lost opium and the cost of the war! {However, who started it??"}

5. The British was far from satisfied with the Treaty of Nanking and were impatient to legalise opium, The result was a second Opium War in 1856. Again, the British won easily, and the Chinese legalise opium, and England continued to export Indian opium to China until 1911.

6. The British controlled tea plantations in Assam during the nineteenth century but the conditions on the plantations were devastatingly difficult for the worker. There was rarely enough food and the water supply was polluted. and diseases such as malaria, fevers, diarrhea, dysentery, and cholera were rampant.

7. The British paid for coolie to transport tea from Bengal to Assam and paid for each coolie who delivered the tea alive. "Alive" did not equate "healthy" and in some years, over hald the coolies died in transit, while countless numbers arrived so weak that the died within the year, mostly from cholera. They were treated as just another part of the financial equation calculated by the Assam Company. About 30% of the recruits were women and children. {Now the British feel child labour is deplorable!}

8. Tea was highly taxed; five shilling per pound - equal to thirty -two British pounds today!

Comprehensive overview of the history of tea

I'll agree with other reviewers that this isn't an exhaustive history of tea, nor does it cover every aspect of tea production; however, it does provide a thorough look at how tea production evolved and how its popularity spread through East Asia, Western Europe and eventually the United States.

Although I have done some reading on the history of tea before, I still learned quite a bit from this book. For example, I didn't realize that tea used to be processed into bricks and then shaved. I also didn't realize that tea trade with China was the proximate cause of the Opium Wars (and an indirect cause of the invasion of India). Like many modern tea drinkers, I was surprised to find that tea production in India is so new (18th to 19th century).

Modern readers might find it interesting that tea has been linked to both health and status since it's earliest days. What I found provocative are the implications that it might also have been linked to a "return to nature"/protest of urbanization movement since the 15th centuries. Definitely something to think about the next time you're invited to inhale the aroma from your cup and be transported to a place of calm and peace.

Recommended for those who want to learn about the history of tea.

The development of writing jisei is then examined—from the poems of longing of the early nobility and the more "masculine" verses of the samurai to the satirical death poems of later centuries.

Zen Buddhist ideas about death are also described as a preface to the collection of Chinese death poems by Zen monks that are also included. Finally, the last section contains three hundred twenty haiku, some of which have never been assembled before, in English translation and romanized in Japanese.

I love the analysis done with the poems

I love the analysis done with the poems. But gave it 4 stars because Part 2 doesn't have the original haiku texts, like the ones shown in Part 3.

Odd and enchanting

An odd little book - kind of a Zen Goth collection - that ultimately makes me want to live better and more thoughtfully. Along with the poems are reflections and explanations and some history of the author. This isn't a book that I would read straight through but something to have nearby for frequent foraging. There are pages of great stuff here that will provoke new thoughts and insights.

Famous last words

The jisei, known in English as a Death Poem, was an ancient custom in Japan, where literate people supposedly extemporaneously composed a poem in the few seconds before their deaths, revealing their last thoughts and incites in that profound moment. Sometimes bitter, sometimes funny, sometimes profound and sometimes simply serving as a final will or testimony, they were almost a requirement for people of note. Of course, in reality the poems were usually composed well in advance of death, and only written from memory when the time came, they are still a unique and interesting expression of mortality.

"Japanese Death Poems" presents a massive collection of jisei, from people famous and infamous, from monks to authors to samurai to merchants and all walks of life. Most of the poems are accompanied by a short biography of the author, and sometimes with an interpretation of the poem. Most of them take the haiku format, although some are in the longer waka form. The selections are organized alphabetically by the author's name.

An excellent and rare collection, this book is probably best browsed rather than read straight through. There are so many poems that it gets a bit redundant reading them all in a row, and it is better experienced just opening to a page and random, and enjoying the specific poems. Because of this, "Japanese Death Poems" is a book that can often be revisited. I have found many poems that I have read several times, and find a deeper meaning each time.

It is a huge flaw that the book is not bilingual, and only includes the romanized version of the Japanese script. Due to the nature of the Japanese language, with kanji carrying inherent meaning, it is difficult to interpret the author's true intent without it. One is forced to rely on the English translations, or to hunt down the original poem in order to see what kanji was used. This is especially true of Japanese poetry, as the authors could get very creative with the kanji, creating their own words and combinations in order to add meaning to the limited characters allowed by the haiku format.
