The Living House: An Anthropology of Architecture in South-East Asia, by Roxana Waterson

The Living House is a pioneering work by respected anthropologist Roxana Waterson that has become a classic in its field. It is first book of its kind to present a detailed picture of houses within the complex social and symbolic fabric of indigenous South-East Asian peoples.

The main focus of the book is on Indonesia, but in tracing historical links between architectural forms across the region, it reveals a much wider field of inquiry—covering all of the Austronesian peoples and cultures extending as far afield as Madagascar, Japan and the Pacific islands to New Zealand and Hawaii. As it probes the centrally significant role of houses within South-East Asian social systems, The Living House reveals new insights into the kinship systems, gender symbolism and cosmological principles of the peoples who build them, ultimately uncovering fundamental themes concerning the concepts of life force and life processes inherent in all of these cultures.

A vivid picture is produced of how people shape buildings and buildings shape people—how rules about layout and spatial usage impact social relationships. The book concludes with a consideration of present-day changes affecting the fates of indigenous cultures and architectures throughout the region. This book will be of tremendous interest to architects and historians, and anyone interested in the indigenous art and cultures of South-East Asia.

As close to indispensable as they come.
By J&S
I have had this book since the mid-1980's, and will be buying a new copy before long--mine has finally fallen apart to the point that it's difficult to use. But this was the single most valuable asset to me years ago as I studied for and passed the highest level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.

Cutting Edge: Japanese Swords in the British Museum, by Victor Harris

The Japanese sword has long been appreciated both as a weapon and as an object of art. Only in Japanese culture has the sword been developed to such a level of technological excellence and spiritual importance. As a cutting weapon, the fully developed curved katana, or samurai sword, of the samurai warrior was uniquely effective. As a cultural object, it offers invaluable insights into the social and spiritual history of the Japanese people.

Cutting Edge: Japanese Swords in the British Museum offers a fascinating introduction to the design, manufacture and collecting of these Japanese weapons. It covers the development of sword art and designs, traditional forging methods, regional variations in style and signature works by legendary craftsmen. Includes hundreds of photos with 16 pages in full color.

Nihonto From The British Museum
By Joe Pierre
This fine volume documents an exhibit of Japanese swords (nihonto) on display at the British Museum circa 2005 (at least, that's when the book was published) along with some background information on nihonto in general. As the authors note, "this book is intended to be a catalogue for the exhibition... and also a guide to the study of Japanese sword blades based on that exhibition."

The book starts with a solid introductory text that covers rough basics about Japanese swords (how they're made, their place in Japanese culture, etc.) and also reviews in reasonable detail a brief history of medieval Japan, along with corresponding changes in sword manufacture over its different eras. This type of information can be found in any of a number of different introductory books elsewhere, but here it has just the right amount of detail on the main epochs of sword making -- Heian, Kamakura, Nambokucho, Muromachi, Momoyama, and Edo. Also included within the intro on a two-page spread is a nice illustration of different characteristics of blades -- kissaki/boshi (tip), hamon ('temper' line), jigane/hada (steel grain), blade cross sections, and nakago (tang) styles. This kind of information can also be found elsewhere, in both more and less detail depending on the book, but it's just about the right amount for the intent of this volume. Even better is a two-pager of representative blades from different eras lined up side-by-side and showing changes in sugata (shape) over time -- unlike other books, they are presented as B&W photos here rather than just line drawings which is very helpful to see defining features.

The real meat of the volume consists of the catalogue listing of the 89 blades from the exhibit. The blades (which include tachi, katana, wakizashi, tanto, and the occasional yari and naginata) are arranged chronologically from when they were made and categorized into Koto, Edo, Shinto, and Shin Shinto eras, with brief descriptions of defining regional traditions and schools (e.g. Bizen, Mino, Echigo, etc.) within those eras, followed by a brief but reasonably detailed description of each exhibit blade (discussing the smith, date of manufacture, sugata, hada, hamon, etc.) and their accompanying koshirae (saya, tsuba, and other fittings). The second section then includes stunningly detailed B&W photos of each blade, both up close so that you can see details of hada and hamon as well as full length shots showing the sugata, tang, and mei (note that all of the blades were brought to full polish prior to the exhibit). In addition, an accompanying photo shows each blade's assembled koshirae -- this British Museum collection seems to have included almost all blades with full mounts. These pages comprise the real strength of the book -- the photos are outstanding and document in rich detail each blade. My only complaint is that there are no color photos of the koshirae, which are obviously ornate with exquisite design and detail, so that B&W doesn't do them justice (though there are about 10 pages of color photos of koshirae elsewhere in the book). Likewise, it would have been nice to see some photos of the unsheathed blades fitted to tsuka and tsuba, but all of the photos are of the naked blade with nagako exposed. Oh, and there is the occasional typo in which the swordsmith listed near the photo doesn't match up with the catalogue description in the text.

Those minor complaints aside, this is an excellent tome that gives a decent introduction to nihonto, and provides a stellar photo-documentary of an outstanding museum grade collection. Aside from the auction books put out by Christie's of the Walter Compton Collection (which are out-of-print, rare, and expensive), I can think of no other English language book that accomplishes this (for less than $25 no less). All in all, an wonderful resource for both the novice who just wants to drool at swords as art, or those beginning kantei (study and appreciation of nihonto) in earnest.

Excellent book
By Jimbo
In a very few words, this book is informative to both the newcomer and the more advanced collector. The historical and technical information is authoratative and concise, but the best part of the book are the incredible photos of the blades. These are the best photos I have ever seen, you can actually see the hamons and hadas which are also described in the text. It is extremely difficult to take photos like these, and in many books you can see the blade but not the individual characteristics which actually give the beauty to the blade.

Clear and concise tutorial for the 24-form.
By A Customer
This light-weight handbook is a clearly illustrated and concisely written guide to the 24-movement Tai Chi Short Form. Recommended as an easy-to-understand workbook for those learning, or wishing to learn, this popular form of taijiquan.

Lacks theory and detail; incorrect movements.
By A Customer
This book LACKS a great attention to detail in the most common of areas. Hands are left open on every movement, footwork is almost non-existant, and the center of gravity is every BUT where it belongs. The demo of the Muk-Yan-Chong goes back and forth with pictures of Dr. Smith and one of his students. Every Wing Chun practitioner knows the swords are NEVER turned backwards along the forearm, yet he displays this quite often. The pole form is over 50 movements, yet Dr. Smith displays approximately 10 and claims this is all there really is. There is very little detail in the execution of movements outside of a general description. In short, this book looks to be written for someone who has no knowledge of Wing Chun, Wing Tsun, or Ving Tsun whatsoever. Those that do, I recommend not wasting your money.

More styles illustrated than other similar books
By Harold McFarland
The title says it all with "The Complete Book of Tai Chi Chuan". With many Tai Chi Chuan books just detailing the sequence of one particular form, it is refreshing to find one that details the history, philosophies, various styles, philosophy, and spiritual development. Author Wong Kiew Kit, a Grandmaster living in Malaysia, does a thorough job of describing and detailing the various styles. This is the first Tai Chi Chuan book that I have read that covered more than one or two styles in detail. Wong Kiew Kit details Wudang Tai Chi Chuan, Chen-Style, Yang-Style, Wu Yu Xiang-Style, Wu Chuan You-Style, and Sun-Style. The illustrations are line drawings that sometimes take some effort before you really understand the movements to be made. However, if you are looking for a reference on Tai Chi Chuan that will bring a complete understanding of the subject in all of its nuances including history, philosophy, patterns, and just about anything else, this is a highly recommended purchase.

Review
"A long walk in sweltering Bangkok would appear a daft proposition, fit only for mad dogs and Englishmen. And it has taken a knowledgeable and persevering Englishman to piece together not one but 22 splendidly labyrinthine strolls littered with the sort of historical trivia that brings the city's backstreets to life. Barrett's investment in shoe leather has clearly paid off." —Vijay Verghese, editor, SmartTravelAsia.com

"Demonstrating an impressive command of the history of each neighbourhood of the old city of Bangkok at the grassroots level, Kenneth Barrett has written the first book in the English language that really introduces the districts of this culturally and architecturally diverse city. Written in lively prose, 22 Walks in Bangkok is both local history to be read at home, and heritage guide to be clutched in hand while exploring the back lanes of the city on foot." —James Stent, chairman, Siamese Heritage Trust of the Siam Society under Royal Patronage

"The best way to truly get to know this city is on foot, and 22 Walks in Bangkok is a book that opens historical windows to the past…as well as telling how the city has become what it is today. For tourists as well as residents, this publication adds to the store of knowledge about Bangkok and offers a hands-on, foot-down way of getting to know the City of Angels." —Naphalai Areesorn, editor-in-chief, Thailand Tatler

"The metamorphosis of Bangkok from a water town to an overland city in less than three generations left behind a trail of the unexpected and undecided in the urban fabric. Strolling in and out of the alleys of Bangkok with Kenneth Barrett will reveal the unlikely and the co-existence of the opposite in the built forms and lifestyle of the inhabitants." —Sumet Jumsai, architect

"I thought I knew Bangkok but Kenneth Barrett proved me wrong. He's shown me a whole different side to the city that I never knew existed. It's as if you're walking through the city with a friend who has lived there his whole life." —Stephen Leather, author, Private Dancer

"My journalism thesis at university was an attempt to define New York as a multitude of neighborhoods in search of a city. Kenneth Barrett has topped me in doing the same thing for messy Bangkok, a vast sprawl of unfocused energy I had always, until now, considered unwalkable. It takes a photographer's eye to see all that he's found and a writer's skill to share it so engagingly." —Jerry Hopkins, author, Romancing the East

"Did you ever hear of a guidebook that reads like a novel? Well, pick up a copy of 22 Walks in Bangkok and that is what you will find. I couldn't put the book down. The author has a wonderful way of making history come alive." —Harold Stephens, travel correspondent, Thai Airways

"Bangkok has so many sides to it, and yet most visitors only get to see a fraction of what is an absolutely fascinating city. This wonderful book will entice even long-term residents (like myself) to leave their cars behind and discover all kinds of curiosities and hidden attractions." —Colin Hastings, publisher, The BigChilli

About the Author

An interview with author Kenneth Barrett

Q: Hi Ken. Congratulations on your recent publication, 22 Walks in Bangkok: Exploring the City's Historic Back Lanes and Byways. Before getting in to the details of the book, please tell us a little about yourself and how you got interested in Bangkok.

A: I was a journalist and editor working out of London and covering the Middle East. When the company I worked for set up a new division covering Southeast Asia, they put me in charge of editorial. I had never set foot in the region before, and it changed my life. It seemed like a different world—so full of colour and action, and always with a feeling of adventure in the air. Later, another company offered me a contract in Bangkok, and I moved here for two years before going on to Singapore, and then to Hong Kong. Eventually I returned to Bangkok.

I have always felt particularly attracted to Bangkok because it seems to represent the East: to me, there has always been something mysterious about the city, a mystique that cannot quite be grasped.

Q: Why did you write this? And, what makes it different from guidebooks already on the market?

A: Bangkok is a difficult city to understand. To anyone arriving here for the first time, it is an immense sprawl, and probably not what they were expecting. Tourists will be taken to the big set-piece sights, but many of the most intriguing places are tucked away, and not easily found. The guidebooks will only give an outline to the main sites, and there really isn't much information on the city that is easily available. There is nothing that brings the city to life by explaining how it was formed and built, and by describing people and events that place the historic districts and buildings into context. This is my own personal interest and so I put everything into the research, which wasn't easy because the information is so fragmented. Ultimately, it came down to shoe leather— walking the districts.

The walks in general follow the chronological order in which the city was built, to make the whole place easier to understand. The walks themselves are linear, but they are not walking-by-numbers in style. The style is more of an exploration guide.

Q: Is this book intended for first time visitors or for those that frequent Bangkok?

A: Both! First-time visitors will find walks that take them around the big landmarks, putting the places into historical context. There are also walks that will take visitors along the old moat, or into specific areas of Chinatown—interesting places and easy walks that anyone will enjoy, even when their time is limited. For frequent visitors, or those living here, the book will prove an in-depth guide to areas that are full of historic interest but are more obscure, such as the old harbour district, or Bang Krachao, a jungled island in the middle of the city that few people know about.

Q: This book contains 22 places to visit. Of those, which is your favorite? Why?

A: I would say Walk 6, along the inner moat. The way is surprisingly peaceful, with the canal clean and quiet, and big shade trees overhanging the water. The historic sites are beautiful, and full of interest. And it's not a long walk— two hours at an easy stroll.

Q: Did you learn anything while compiling the text that was surprising or new to you?

A: I kept unearthing fascinating little stories! I would find a name or a vague mention of an event, and following it up would come upon something that was completely new. Or I would follow a path or an alley, and find a mansion, or a temple, or a neighbourhood that was unknown to me.

Amongst my favourites: Wat Kanikapon, built by a Chinatown madame, its windows and doors decorated by stylised wooden curtains; the Christian villages founded by Khmers and Vietnamese at Samsen Road; a Japanese temple tucked into the compound of Wat Liab, which has a colourful history; the royal execution stone at Wat Sampeng, and its grim history; the Temple of the Angels, the only temple in Thailand honouring bhikkhunis, or female monks; the mysterious structure outside the British Embassy, which is actually an old boundary marker and led to the story of a most interesting man; and the image of footballer David Beckham, who appears as one of the deities at the foot of the Buddha image at Wat Pariwat.

Good writing, horrible editing
By Amazon Customer
First off, I think this book caters more to Bangkok residents and/or history buffs. I have the feeling the casual reader will not enjoy this book that much. Since I am both the book is in principal perfect for me and I enjoyed reading the book very much! I actually thought the narrative was brilliant since I was captivated as if I were reading a novel. So why do I give this book only three stars? Well, the problem are the inconsistency what is depicted on the maps and what is written in the text. In Part I (Thonburi) everything is still fine: The text describes the points of interest on the map in numerical order and the points of interest are laid out in the form of a walking tour. I have no problem that the points of interest are not connected, since everybody who lives in Bangkok knows how difficult it is to describe how to find your way through those back alleys etc. However, somewhere in the middle of Part II (Bangkok) all the organization falls apart: The narrative doesn't follow the numerical order of the points of interest on the map any longer, Also, the points of interest don't seem to follow a walking tour any longer. There are points of interest that are not mentioned in the text and other buildings are explained in the text that can not be found on the map... it is a really frustrating experience. My feeling, however, is that this is not Kenneth Barrett's fault, but somehow this "scrambling" happened in the editorial process. As I said: Beautiful written, interesting storyline, but as a walking guide in parts either unusable or it needs thorough preparation and a good map beyond what the book has to offer. Another complaint is that the b/w photos in this book simply look horrible. It seems somebody was trying to increase the visibility by enhancing the contrast, but now they resemble a big mess with a certain (bad) HDR quality to them. Thankfully, the color photos are unaffected and very nice to look at.
Unfortunately, I can give only give three stars, BUT the book has the potential to be worthy of five stars with some editing of the maps and the photos. If you are only interested in the narrative - highly recommended.

Better Read Than Walked
By Fred Armentrout
This has both the strengths and weaknesses of using "old hand" authors. Sorting this confusing city into district walks, measured mostly in 1-3 hour unhurried modules, shows the insight only an old hand would have. Bangkok is a hot and humid, crowded and confusing place. Small excursions are far preferable to grand tours here.

And only an old hand would have taken the hours to scan old newspaper reports about what are now arcane events, for the sake of the curious back-stories of notable people and places, and accuracy in describing the large local significance of small landmarks.

It takes an experienced writer to weave so much cultural and historical information into the casual patter of a guidebook and, in key senses, that's its limitation -- it's a great read in need of street sense.

Why? Maps without cross-referencing to text eliminates both's value as guides. That may be the publisher's fault, but it limits the book to being a reader's rather than walker's guide. The book's maps are merely place markers, without reference to or within the text. That said, it will make a good companion to the maps adventurous travelers may have to purchase separately to make any street sense of these walks.

Brilliant intro to Bangkok
By Derek
I bought this book for my first visit to Bangkok and read most of it as a travelogue before I even arrived - and I'm glad I did! Ken Barrett obviously has a great love for the city and his research is obviously based on many years walking its streets as well as reading its history. Possibly it might have benefited by having the numbers on the maps repeated in the body of the text, but this isn't your Lonely Planet style of guide (thankfully!) where those who simply want to see the 'hot spots' are led by the hand, (and I suspect the person who said that it needed dotted lines is exactly one of those), but a tantalizing wander through places you might never visit, backed up with anecdotes (many of them pleasantly tongue-in-cheek) and excellent information. Does it really matter if you get a bit lost occasionally (which I did), because the maps are perfectly good enough to get you back on track, and often getting lost lets you make your own discoveries. I highly recommend buying this book before you arrive as a major appetite whetter.

Flash cards are one of the quintessential keys to successful language learning, and Chinese Flash Cards Kit Volume 3 contains all the necessary ingredients you need to read and write Chinese.

Many Chinese language students understand that there are three secrets to committing these Chinese characters, or Hanzi, to memory: start with the basic characters first, then study the others in the correct order, and use constant repetition to reinforce them until they stick in your long-term memory. No other study tool is better equipped to handle this task other than flash cards, making this kit an ideal resource for practicing Chinese. These handy flash cards present the characters in the correct order and the cards have a full range of features to help you master the 448 Upper Intermediate level characters, along with their associated 2,240+ words and sentences. The HSK is China's standard test of Chinese proficiency for non-native speakers, required of foreigners who wish to study or work at Chinese universities and firms.

Whether at home or on the go, you can use these cards to learn several new characters every day, and watch your knowledge develop rapidly over time.

This kit features:

Best Chinese flash cards yet
By Baroque music lover
This series of four boxes is the largest and most useful of the three sets of Chinese flash cards that I have attempted to use this year.

On one side these cards present:
-- the simplified Hanzi and corresponding Pinyin pronunciation and English
-- the Hanzi radical under which Chinese dictionaries list the character and the set of component radicals in the character
-- an example of use in Hanzi, Pinyin and English
-- a series of multi-character words using this character, where each line presents one such multi-character word in Hanzi, Pinyin and English.

On the other side these cards present the simplified and, when different, the traditional Hanzi character, the stroke order for the simplified character, and the simplified Hanzi for the series of multi-character words that are defined on the first side of the card. Together these enable self-test of Hanzi-to-Pinyin and Hanzi-to-English for both the single Hanzi character of the card and for those multi-character words whose pronunciations and definitions are on the reverse.

Each side of the card also gives the card number (of a total of 1792 cards in Volumes 1-4), simplifying card sorting and indexed computerized references where that is desired.

Great designed and superb in use!

Chinese in a Flash - Volume 1, 2, 3 and 4

As an additional tool to learn Mandarin Chinese characters these flashcards are excellent made and very easy in use. Each volume offers 448 character flash cards and 1792 compounds words.

On each individual flashcard you can find on the front side:
- Large print of the character
- Stroke order
- Four possible (and frequently used) words using that character
- A card number for easy ordering and traceability

On each individual flashcard you can find on the back side:
- Smaller print of the character (with pinyin and translation)
- Radical
- Character component
- Example of using that character in a phrase (with pinyin and translation)
- The four words using that character - as printed on the front side (with pinyin and translation)
- The card number

The 4 volumes offer in total 1792 characters and about 7168 words.

Each volume has also a booklet that allows you to search on pinyin, character or translation. Volume 1 starts with more frequently used words and the volumes built up on that. All are printed in easy to read fonts by the way.

This is a really great tool for the serious student of Mandarin Chinese. Great designed and superb in use!

Misspelled Pinyin
By Jen
I have not bought this, so you can take or leave this advice. I took a look at the preview's list of characters included because I am interested in expanding my vocabulary. This list is pretty familiar already and I noticed that at least 7 of the character's pinyin listed on the preview is wrong. I would think that someone would edit the list first. It's unfortunate because students just learning these characters will not notice this and learn the wrong pronunciation.

Field Notes: The Making of Middle East Studies in the United States, by Zachary Lockman

Field Notes reconstructs the origins and trajectory of area studies in the United States, focusing on Middle East studies from the 1920s to the 1980s. Drawing on extensive archival research, Zachary Lockman shows how the Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Ford foundations played key roles in conceiving, funding, and launching postwar area studies, expecting them to yield a new kind of interdisciplinary knowledge that would advance the social sciences while benefiting government agencies and the American people. Lockman argues, however, that these new academic fields were not simply a product of the Cold War or an instrument of the American national security state, but had roots in shifts in the humanities and the social sciences over the interwar years, as well as in World War II sites and practices.

This book explores the decision-making processes and visions of knowledge production at the foundations, the Social Science Research Council, and others charged with guiding the intellectual and institutional development of Middle East studies. Ultimately, Field Notes uncovers how area studies as an academic field was actually built—a process replete with contention, anxiety, dead ends, and consequences both unanticipated and unintended.

Review
"Zachary Lockman's labors in the foundation records make Field Notes a must read for understanding the history of the social sciences and the building of area studies. And his wry style and sharp, carefully drawn conclusions makes reading the book a true pleasure."—Robert Vitalis, University of Pennsylvania, author of White World Order, Black Power Politics: The Birth of American International Relations

"Fair-minded, thorough, and thoughtful, Field Notes is essential reading for scholars in Middle East studies who want to learn the origins and fate of their field. With a broad vision and deep research, Zachary Lockman has much to teach anyone interested in the past, present, and future of international studies in the United States."—David Engerman, Brandeis University

"In considering the creation of the interdisciplinary field of Middle East studies in the United States, Zachary Lockman provides a dystopic vision from the commanding heights of the war games planners and petroleum executives to 'the lower parts of Max Weber.' Bristling with ideas and criticisms, Field Notes deserves to be placed alongside the life cycles and vicissitudes of Latin America, East Asia and Africa area studies in the making and unmaking of the twentieth century American empire."—Edmund Burke III, University of California, Santa Cruz, author of The Ethnographic State: France and the Invention of Moroccan Islam

About the Author
Zachary Lockman is Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and of History at New York University. He is the author of Contending Visions of the Middle East: The History and Politics of Orientalism (2004, 2010).
