About the Author
Boye Lafayette De Mente has been involved with Japan, China, and Korea since the late 1940s as a member of a U.S. intelligence agency, student, trade journalist, editor, and author working out of Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He is a graduate of Jochi University in Tokyo and The American Institute for Foreign Trade (now Thunderbird: The School of Global Management). His 70-plus books include Etiquette Guide to China, Instant Chinese and Survival Chinese.

Useful introduction to Chinese Culture

"The Chinese Mind" is a short introduction to today's Chinese culture and thinking. I felt it was a fair and accurate description of modern China and how/why things are the way they are (I've myself lived many years in China). This would be one of my recommended books if someone asks me for more information about China. Yet, I was disappointed with the final chapter, hence decided to go for 3 stars (more about that later).

The book consists of four parts, which do not really contain sub-chapters, but rather sub-sections. The first of the parts is about the language and its relationship to culture. The second part covers traditional China and the next part modern China. The last part is a list of "codewords" from the author to help understand the culture.

The author is of opinion that language conveys culture and thus an understanding of language is essential for understanding its culture (which I don't disagree). He considers some words/concepts in a language to be essential for understanding the culture, thus explaining these words/concepts a person can within a short time get a deep dive in the culture. He calls these codewords. The first part introduces this concept and the fourth part lists important codewords.

Part two covers a more traditional view of Chinese culture. It explains current cultural values and practices but in its traditional context. The next part covers more of the modern China and how it has changed over the years. China has had a roller-coaster ride from tradition, to no tradition but instead communism and cultural revolutions and then back to tradition again. This roller-coaster ride has deeply influenced the modern China. The author does a good job in describing this.

The last part consists of code words or key words which give an deep insight in Chinese culture. From my experience, some of these code words are right on, some of them are perhaps a little old and of less influence in modern day China. I felt the code word approach only partially useful, but the chapter could be greatly improved. The code words are sorted alphabetically, which is really too bad because some of them strongly relate, whereas some don't relate at all. This makes reading this chapter like jumping constantly from one concept to the other. It would have been much nicer reading if the author would have grouped them together, perhaps explained the groups and the relationship between the code words which cover similar aspects of the culture. He could provide an alphabetical index for when people are search for a particular code word. Also, the author stressed the importance of pictograms in the Chinese language a lot, yet he doesn't show the traditional (or simplified) Chinese characters but instead pinyin. It would have been so much more interesting to add the characters to the code words. For me, these points were causing me to be slightly disappointed in this chapter.

All in all, The Chinese Mind was a useful book, especially if you are not very familiar with modern China. It does a good job explaining how and why things are the way they are (in such a short text at least). I disliked the structure (especially the "discussion topics & questions sections). I disliked the way the last part was written, it had so much more potential. My initial rating would have been 4 stars, but due to the above mentioned annoyances, I'd lower that to 3.5 stars and chose 3 stars in the Amazon review to reflect this. This doesn't mean this is a bad or average book, it is good, yet it could have been even better. A reasonable good overview of modern China.

Uneven Writing, Wrong Word Pronunciations

After reading the other reviews I was excited to consider this book for recommending to my students. After reading it, I had to lean toward the previous review that calls this book laughably bad.

For the "uneven writing" part of my review title:
- The writing was very uneven with some good sections containing useful information interspersed with trite sections containing little information at all.

- The book starts with a section on Yin and Yang which doesn't provide a definition of what it is or how it really influences Chinese culture, but it does say that it pervades all cultures. This is common to many of the sections of the book which contain what I felt were generalizations and shallow statements that didn't say much of anything at all. Another glaring example for me was the section on the influence of computers and the internet on Chinese culture which said essentially that the internet has changed Chinese culture by importing other ideas from around the world.

- The unfortunate thing is that there *were* some good sections of the book including those on: situational ethics, the soft "no", and Chinese way of viewing law. My problem is the good sections were simply too short, too few and too far apart.

- In the end the book felt to me like different parts were written by different people, or that it was was assembled by cutting and pasting. (I agree with the "freshman writing" sentiment of the other reviewer).

For the "pronunciations" part of my review title:

- The pronunciations given for many words were wrong and should not be relied on. Using many of them will only result in confusion.

- Example: on the first page, Hanzi is not pronounced "Han Jee" and saying it that way will get you nothing but a blank stare. That was only the first of many, many.

- Even simple words were butchered: the word "bao" (pronounced as in "bow to the king") was written to be pronounced as Bah-oh - a 2 syllable word ???

I would have liked to recommend this book as there were a few good sections. But overall, there are much better books out there on learning how the Chinese think and how they do things. An easy choice for me is another book by the same publisher ("It's All Chinese to Me: An Overview of Culture & Etiquette in China").

Hilarious Sinophile rants against U.S. culture while briefly praising aspects of Chinese culture/history. Nothing to see here.

I have lived in China for four years. I thought I might learn something from this book, but only Part IV is useful, IF you correct the mispronunciations. As others wrote, many of the provided Chinese pronunciations are simply wrong.

I bought this book at Pudong Airport and laughed out loud while reading on Shanghai Metro Line 2. It is hilarious in a sad way. The author briefly describes an aspect of Chinese culture, often tossing in an unsubstantiated criticism of U.S. culture, then 'asks' the reader to agree with his outrageous conclusions in the 'discussion' sections. Many of the 'discussion' questions are simply the author's unsubstantiated statements of Chinese cultural superiority. Many 'discussion' questions are unrelated to the text.

In other words, the writing is horrific by any standard, even if you accept the author's opinions.

The author never provides examples or any support for any of his claims, whether outrageous or plausible, and he provides only basic Chinese culture. This book should be reduced to about 20 pages of content, but then you can't sell it for $30, can you?

I was robbed. Don't waste your money.

Great for Kids & Adults

Origami Activities is a great introduction and starting point for children (and grown ups).
It's simple, uncomplicated style and instructions make it easy to follow, with approx 15 projects to challenge your skills, from easy to moderate.
This book has been used quite a lot with primary school children.
Also, you don't need special paper to start off with. We cut up magazines into squares!

A Gem for Those Visiting Korea or Koreans

This little book is only 128 pages long but is a terrific guide to etiquette for those visiting Korea whether for business or pleasure. It also would be worthwhile for those dealing with the Korean communities here in the U.S.

A glance at Amazon's listing of this author's books suggests the high level of knowledge and ability to communicate embodied in this little book.

It is fun to read, fascinating, and surprisingly complete. On top of that, it has a phrasebook section with phonic spellings that is excellent and it has a brief selected vocabulary that I find very useful as an introduction to Korean. Easy to use with a nice format and good index, this book is a must have for travelers to Korea and those interested in an informed glimpse of Korean culture.

This will be a gift for a friend who is about to move to Korea (her husband is in the Army) and it will be a great start to learning how to live in Korea. I flipped through the book and it seemed very informative, without being very dry. Great book!

7 Chinese Folk Tales Retold In English

I picked this up at the PuDong Airport in Shanghai shortly after Chinese New Year after I was unable to tell a specific fairy tale to my son to explain the recreated scenes he saw while we were celebrating the Lantern Festival (The Story of the White Snake). There are 7 stories in this book separated into 3 categories.

3 Tales of Creation: Pan Gu and the Creation, Nu Wo the Mother of Mankind, Ho Yi the Archer
2 Mortality Tales: Journey to the West, The Man In the Moon
2 Tales of Love: The Story of the White Snake, The Heavenly River

There is also a historical introduction, story notes, and a list of characters at the end. I found the stories rather well told, the pictures are very beautiful and capture both the traditional artistic style and a kind of whimsical watercolor look. The stories were easy to understand in English and yet still kept true to folklore. Obviously if you wanted an in-depth Journey to the West, you'd have to look elsewhere, but this was perfect to introduce my eight year old son to the stories I had grown up with in a language he understood easily.

I definitely overpaid at the airport (as is usual at airports) but I would not hesitate to buy this book again.

This didn't flow as well as I'd have liked, however it is still very good. There are seven nice stories in this. The Chinese language, and worldview, is rather different from the Western mindset. It helps to be aware of that, when one reads these stories. Native American stories come from a culture that lives close to the Earth. The Chinese are also earthy, but in a more citified way, I guess one might say. You don't know a culture till you know its stories, and these do help explain something of how Chinese people think. The stories are told well, and the pictures complement the text very nicely.

I have used a few English - Chinese dictionaries now, and this is by far the best. The simplicity is supurb. It uses a larger font than many similar dictionaries, so you can see the Chinese characters with more clarity. The example sentences for each word are excellent. The Chinese is simple and eloquent, and for a beginner, it is a brilliant reference. The pinyin allows words in the examples to be referenced quickly. I haven't found a word in any example that isn't also in the dictionary (this is very impressive). The reference section at the back is also very well laid out. I have used this dictionary for well over six months now and I have tested it fairly well. Of several English - Chinese dictionaries that I own, this has become my first reference, firstly because of the usage examples, but also because it is just easier to use than the rest. I'd love an electronic version as well though - preferably for a PDA - so that I could click around the examples - it wouldn't replace the book though.

I would asolutely recommend this book for anyone learning Chinese.

This book is a must have for anyone wanting to get a better grasp on Chinese vocab. Includes plenty of example sentences to give a better feel for what the words look like in a sentence. I have studied Chinese independently for nearly 2 1/2 years and I have to say this book is something I wish I had back when I started studying.

I own several Chinese-English dictionaries. This is my favorite. In its layout, type size, sample sentences ( with pinyin), scope of vocabulary, breakdown of word components ( very helpful in understanding the meaning behind the word and the Chinese mindset) as well as many other features mentioned by other reviewers on this page this text is outstanding.

One feature which I love is the inclusion of traditional characters. Though the simplified characters form the basis of the book wherever the traditional character varies it is listed. Many dictionaries lack this vital resource.

I use this now as my preferred beginner and intermediate level Chinese-English dictionary.

Its alright, not great

This book is decent, but not great. I visited Kyoto recently and was hoping to get a nice overview of the temples that we had visited. Now understanding that a volume that included ALL temples would not really be realistic as their are so many there,I was hoping that at least the more "famous" ones would be included so as to have a nice memento of our trip. The book itself warns that it is far from a complete resource, and that it really doesnt have a particular theme.Rather, its a collection of random temples that the photographer happened upon in their own visit(s). The photos are decent, but not as stunning or as in-depth as I would have hoped.Same with what is written, the text barely scratching the surface on what each temple is about.

So again, this book isnt necessarily bad,but it left me a little disappointed. I would not recommend this book for the outrageous prices i've seen it listed at.In fact,after reading it im puzzled as to why its demanding such prices on the after-market? If this is the definitive volume in English on the topic, then that is quite sad.

As a Mah jongg instructor, I try to read everything I can about the game in order to help my students learn more easily. After reading this book, all I can say is if you are interested in learning to play Mah Jongg buy this book!! It will help you. It is clearly written, beautifully illustrated, and understandable by the most beginner of beginners. It will also help you later as you improve your game. Handy for experienced players too, as it will clarify many misunderstandings people may have when playing. Go forth and Mahj! BB

Of the five books I've purchased this one is without a doubt written for the beginner. And, it will be useful for as long as I play the game of Mah Jongg! This is a very easy book to follow. Excellent resource

I have been playing American Maj Jongg for over a year. This book provides well written easy to follow explanations and instructions for novice as well as others who have some experience. The author provides quizes to help the reader check his understanding at the end of each chapter. The best parts of the book for me were the exercises he provided for individuals to practice such skills as chosing what hand to try to play from the card. You can't go wrong with this book if you want to play American Maj Jongg (National or American).
