Absolutely Superb Traditional Chinese Martial Arts
By A Customer
Previous reviewers who criticize this work based on their perception of impracticality have essentially missed the author's point. Martial arts literature does not have to present itself as a 'cookbook' in order to be useful.
Anyone who has had more than a casual introduction to martial arts understands that Leung Shum is one of the most knowledgeable masters of traditional Chinese kungfu in North America. The system he has studied for most of his life--Northern Eagle Claw (Faan Tzi Ying Jow Pai) kungfu--is legendary for it's devastating effectiveness, and is respected as one of the most comprehensive fighting systems ever devised. Anyone claiming this system as ineffectual has simply misunderstood the methods and aims of traditional training.
As pointed out by other reviewers, this work is not intended to serve as a technique-by-technique how-to, or as a catalog of "quick n' easy" self defense scenarios. Instead, it provides a solid, encyclopedic reference to some of the core principles ("secrets" if you like) of the Eagle Claw system. Also, the book does not serve well as an entry-level text. The reader should have at least some background in, or strong desire to understand traditional Chinese martial arts.

Reference vs Learning
By David Wilson
As a student of Sifu Shum for 10 years, I can verify that the contents of this book are verbatim for the lessons learned studying at Ying Jow Pai in New York City. Having said that, it should be obvious to any serious student that you will not learn a martial art by reading a book. You need to have a good teacher, and you need to practice constantly and diligently. Books such as these are for reference, to make clear and correct what you would learn from a legitimate teacher. The opponents' distance is for clarity of technique, not to demonstrate an actual attack. Comments from some other reviewers indicate they don't know the difference between learning a technique and actually using one. Eagle Claw locks are devastatingly effective, but are also difficult to learn to use effectively. In my years of training in NY, I have both used and seen used the techniques described in this book, and they certainly work. Sifu Shum is very careful about what he releases with the Ying Jow Pai name attached to it, and this book is a perfect example of the quality he demands from his students and the care he takes in disseminating the system.

Excellent book by an excellent teacher
By A Customer
The author of this book, Leung Shum, is a true master of Eagle Claw kung fu. He is the inheritor of the style, so the aunthenticity and quality of this book is of the highest standard.
The reviewer who keeps writing the same bad review over and over again obviously knows absolutely nothing about kung fu. He doesn't realize that the techniques in this book are the beginners training techniques of a complex kung fu system, not simple self-defense moves. This reviewer says "the locks are too complicated to use in a real fight". Some of the techniques are complicated, and they require lots of practice. But after they are mastered they can be executed in a split second by a skilled martial artist. This what separates martial arts from self defense; self defense is simple and easy to use, while martial arts are very complex and take many years to master. Marial arts can only be learnt directly from a master, people who think they can read a book and suddenly be able to use the techniques in fighting do not understand martial arts.
The reviewer also says that kung fu is only for looks. It is understandable that someone would say this because the movements in kung fu are often very unsusual, and look as though they have no value as a fighting technique. This is part of the mystery of kung fu, in reality every movement is a powerful fighting technique.
The book is well made and the pictures are of high quality. A person cannot learn kung fu from books, but this book is very good for getting familiar with authentic Eagle Claw, studying the comlicated techniques of this style, and learning the basic priciples of this style. The book also includes the 108 locking techniques of Eagle Claw, which have previously been kept secret for many years. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in learning about this style. It is rare that such a distinguished master such as Leung Shum writes a book, most books written on the subject of kung fu are written by unqualified masters.

From Library Journal
At first glance, this book appears to be a historical and philosophical treatment of Shaolin Kung Fu. But the reader soon discovers that it is more the story of Carradine the actor/martial artist, plus a limited philosophy of Kung Fu. The first half of the book is interesting. It gives an account of Carradine's initiation into the martial arts and his work on the TV series Kung Fu . Carradine comes across as very self-assured and completely devoted to the arts. The second part focuses on the philosophy of Kung Fu, but the narrative is disjointed and rambling. Points are not always clear and some bits of "wisdom" sound as if they came out of a fortune cookie. Carradine fans and martial arts supporters will probably enjoy this book, but those looking for instruction will not find it here.

an earnest attempt to open doors
By A Customer
The original Kung Fu television show inspired me to begin studying martial arts: 24 years later I am still as fascinated by the martial arts as ever. David Carridine is no expert and much of his information on styles and systems is grossly inaccurate; overlook these flaws and what you find is a very interesting, heartfelt account of how the spirit of the martial arts affected, almost in spite of himself, a very intelligent but flawed man. Carradine no doubt ruffles the feathers of the Bruce Lee cultists who want to deify Lee, they should remember that Lee was a brilliant martial artist who deliberately chose to become a movie star. Carradines' advice seems very genuine and sincere. No, he is not a sensei, sifu, or master; he is simply a very complex man whose journey into the martial arts (a journey which seems to have not always been a pancea for his own demons) fundamentally changed him. Read this book not as a definite guide to Kung Fu, but rather as an exploration into personal change and growth.

This book has something that many martial art books do not
By John
It has authentic convictions that are expressed out of personal experience regarding many spiritual, motivational and practical matters. The content veers away from trying to express what is most commonly accepted through traditional teachings and instead offers an honest insight into the personal take on the full spectrum of the martial arts as a very human way of life.
I give David Carradine credit for placing personal truth with a greater priority than acceptance from others in his writings. I am a little critical myself of some of the comments made regarding some other styles and have found what I would guess to be some inaccuracies. Maybe even a couple of differences of opinion on some material. But what is here is like listening to someone who is real, like a friend who is sharing what he is made of. There is a lot of perspective here that is surprisingly uncommon yet enlightening and precious.

The book is basically divided into three sub-groupings.

Book One-The Stories: A biographical history of the author's experience in the martial arts.

Book Two-The Ancient Wisdom: A history and overview of Shaolin ways and David's take on what shined through to him.

Book Three-The Lessons: A practical breakdown of wisdom and advice on a variety of levels.

Like Bruce Lee has said... "All knowledge is ultimately self knowledge" and with this book a deeper knowledge of one's self can certainly be had as well as a deeper knowledge of David Carradine.

Drift with the wind, float with the clouds
By Steve Amoia
David Carradine was an actor in the original "Kung Fu" television series of the early 1970s. Although Bruce Lee introduced martial arts to mainstream American living rooms as Kato in "The Green Hornet," this program had a deeper martial arts theme, and the show was very popular. Mr. Carradine was asked by his martial arts master, Sifu (Master) Kam Yuen, to write a book that would present the teachings and principles of Kung Fu. The book is divided into three parts: Stories, Ancient Wisdom, and Lessons. I will devote more commentary to the last two sections. This work was published in 1991. At the time, Mr. Carradine had studied Kung Fu and related martial arts for 18 years.

Book One: Stories

Ironically, Mr. Carradine, who never had any martial arts training prior to the television series, beat out Bruce Lee for the part of "Kwai Chang Caine." Sifu Yuen was hired as the Kung Fu consultant, and Mr. Carradine remarked, "We concentrated on what I did well, and stayed away from the stuff that looked awkward on me." Mr. Carradine did not begin to study Kung Fu rigorously until the third season of the program.

Due to FCC censorship laws, "Kung Fu" could only film four minutes of actual fight scenes per episode. The show followed the journeys of a Chinese immigrant in the American West during the late 18th century. "We just kept beating our old drum, by coupling excellent production values with historical accuracy, kung fu fighting, and Chinese wisdom. We documented redneck prejudice and gave an authentic chronicle of the difficulties of the Chinese people in America." After the series ended in 1975, Mr. Carradine appeared in a few movies. He also produced two video tapes with Sifu Kam Yeun. One on Kung Fu, and the other on Tai Chi.

Book Two: Ancient Wisdom

Roots of Kung Fu

The Chinese martial art of Kung Fu traces its roots to the 6th century A.D. A Hindu monk, Bodhidharma, was traveling through Northern China. One of his visits took him to a Shaolin (which means "Young Forest") Buddhist monastery. At this locale, he developed 18 forms called "ahrat" movements that would provide the basis for modern day Kung Fu. Actually, Kenpo was also developed at Shaolin monasteries in Northern China. Kung Fu means "To know what to do." As Mr. Carradine states, "(Kung Fu) continues to teach the body and mind throughout life, and further establishes and strengthens the communication link between the two."

Chinese Teachings

Chinese philosophy traces its roots to two distinct sources: Taoism and Confucianism. Taoism was created by Lao Tzu, a teacher whose name means "Old Master." He published his thoughts in the "Tao Te Ching," which remains a classic in Oriental literature. The word "Tao" means "The Way." The book title means "Changes in the Way." Confucius, who is also known as K'ung Fu-tzu, lived sometime between the 5th and 6th Centuries B.C. He developed a social and familial code of conduct. His philosophies were presented in the Wu Ching, along with the Ssu Shu.

Yin-Yang Concept

The symbol of all Chinese and Eastern religions is the T'ai c'hi t'u, which we know as Yin-Yang. This image, which depicts two fish, one black with a white eye, and the other white with a black eye, describes the passive (Yin: female) and active (Yang: male) energies of the universe that are in perpetual motion. This theory is also found in acupuncture. Some illnesses have Yang elements, while others have Yin components. For example, muscular problems are usually the result of too much Yang. Mr. Carradine provided an excellent explanation of Yin-Yang. "In the darkness is the light. In strength is the softness. In the question is the answer. It is all one thing... Choose the positive to begin with and most of the rest will follow. Choose courage instead of fear. Choose success instead of failure. Choose harmony not conflict. Choose love not hate. Choose life instead of death."

Chi

This is the vital energy or force that flows throughout our bodies. Chi can be developed by deep breathing techniques, coordinated flowing movements found in Kung Fu, along with stance training.

Book Three: The Lessons

Healing

Mr. Carradine views Kung Fu as a way of life. He also discusses the healing nature of this Art. "The use of special massages and pressures, herbs and tinctures, corrective and healing movements and stances, and certain mystical disciplines, having to do with meditation and divination (predicting the future), all of which can be tailored to benefit specific viscera (upper torso region), organs, maladies and conditions, are part of any Master's general knowledge." As we can see, the Kung Fu instructor is much more than a martial arts teacher.

Nutrition

Fresh and/or raw fruits and vegetables are relics of our hunter-gatherer past. Our distant ancestors did not eat much red meat. A diet that minimizes animal products has been shown to reduce the threat of modern day health concerns such as high cholesterol, heart disease, and certain forms of cancer.

Stance Training

Mr. Carradine discusses several important stances found in Kung Fu. The horse stance is a fundamental concept that all Shaolin students would study for at least six months. This is complemented by the forward, reverse forward, heel, toe or cat, and the crane stances. They are better illustrated with pictures rather than words. "The dynamic method is to strike a stance momentarily, and change smoothly to the next, altering the position of the arms as well... Drift with the wind, float like the clouds."

Become Who You Want To Be

Chien: The teacher. "Reaching to Heaven. Creative, strong, the leader."
Kun: The healer. "The Earth power: devoted, receptive, soothing, selfless."
Chen: The warrior. "The arousing thunder. Always moving. Sudden and quick. Ambitious."
Kan: The artisan. "As soft, as vital and as powerful as water: the artist."
Ken: The sage: "Standing perfectly still, strongly based like a mountain, the wind in his ears, the sun in his eyes, wisdom comes to him and stays."
Sun: The musician. "Gentle, penetrating, the entire sweet and terrible story of Creation can be heard whispering and roaring in the wind, rustling in the leaves."
Li: The poet. "Clinging to thoughts and words, giving light to the darkness, shining like the sun, crackling with fire."
Tui: The fool. "Filled with the joy of life, pure pleasure, spreading himself across pain and sorrow like a lake of gladness, the clown reigns supreme."

Which one of these describes you?

Thank you for the opportunity to review this very intriguing book.

I am very happy with this book
By Stephen S
I am very happy with this book. I am currently trying to learn Mandarin before returning to china this year for a second trip. This book is very helpful for beginners to get the basics you need when traveling to a new place. The book provides pronunciation guides and has both Pinyin and characters as you go along. i use this as supplemental material to actual language learning course work and it is great since it gives you the more useful vocabulary that you don't usually get in a class or through online tutorials.

Textiles of Southeast Asia: Tradition, Trade and Transformation, by Robyn Maxwell

Textiles provide a visual history of a country's culture and crafting traditions in a way few other things can accomplish. In Textiles of Southeast Asia, Dr. Robyn Maxwell provides the definitive work on Southeast Asian textiles.

Traditional textiles are one of the most widely collected and important categories of Southeast Asian art. Using an extensive range of locally produced raw materials and an astonishing array of techniques—including applique, weaving, batik and embroidery—the textiles of Southeast Asia are astonishing in their versatility and originality. Textiles are used to fashion everything from everyday clothing to sacred and ceremonial costumes, shrouds and wrapping cloths, hangings, banners and ritual regalia—all of which are represented and explained in Textiles of Southeast Asia.

This authoritative text focuses on the changing relationship between indigenous Southeast Asian traditions and the outside influences continuing to be brought to the area, which change the nature of the region's textile traditions. This book considers the various ways Southeast Asian textile artisans reacted over the centuries to the steady stream of new and powerful ideas and raw materials arriving from India, China, the Islamic world and Europe. A detailed and definitive resource, Textiles of Southeast Asia is a welcome addition to the field of textiles.

Impressive study of a fascinating subject.
By K. Kawasaki
This is an excellent book, meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated. It's approach is thematic with an emphasis on various influences that shaped the history and styles of Southeast Asian textile, as well as the cultural significance that textile played in the region. The works examined were primarily drawn from the excellent collection of the National Gallery of Australia. The commentary on each work is detailed in terms of the techniques and motifs. Although it is quite comprehensive in coverage, because it is organized thematically rather than geographically, if you are looking for the styles and examples of a particular culture, you'll have to pick through the book. Historical photographs offer additional insights into how the textiles were used throughout the Southeast Asia. The writing is good and easy to follow once you get accustomed to the technical terms. I am new to this subject and my reading probably has not yet assessed the full extent of the book's merit.

There are plenty of newer textiles that are beautiful but if you are looking for antique pieces this is a great field guide.

Japanese Foods That Heal: Using Traditional Japanese Ingredients to Promote Health, Longevity, & Well-Being (with 125 recipes), by John Be

In Japan, the old ways have prevailed well into the 21st century.

Small family run shops still make miso, tofu, shoyu, tamari, amazake and other traditional healing foods the same way they were made centuries ago. Perched on ladders, tamari makers gently stir fermenting brew in two-hundred-year-old wood vessels that easily top ten feet. Farmers cultivate shiitake and green tea and harvest sea vegetables according to the ancient, natural ways. These producers use the purest ingredients available, and provide superior foods that promote and sustain health.

In Japanese Foods That Heal, John and Jan Belleme introduce eighteen essential foods from Japan that are still cultivated and prepared using time-honored methods and recipes. These traditionally made healthy Japanese foods have been proven to cure and prevent degenerative disease, and to prevent premature aging—a fact the Japanese have known for centuries. By stocking up on these healing Japanese foods, your pantry will become a key element of your healthy lifestyle!

This healthy Japanese cookbook includes everything you need to know about these healthy and delicious foods—from nutrition and medical facts to recipes and tips for creating wholesome and flavorful meals. You will come to appreciate how each food was produced in years past, how it can benefit your health and well-being, and how it is made today. This collection of recipes shows you how rewarding it is to prepare simple, nourishing meals that both promote good health and please the palate. A pronunciation guide and food glossary demystify Japanese foods that at first may seem exotic to Westerners. And a shopping resource offers practical tips for finding all the foods used in the book.

Using this healthy Japanese cooking book as a guide, you will soon learn that the old Japanese saying Isoku Dogen, or "Food is Medicine," is more than a proverb; it is the key to a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Food is Medicine
By Zack Davisson
I tend to be highly skeptical about this kind of book, mainly because they usually present some sort of idealized fantasy of a health-conscious and simple Japan where everyone is deeply in tune with the rhythms of nature, whilst I know from many years of experience living in Japan that your average Japanese person is much more likely to sit down to a steaming pile of fried chicken, reconstituted ramen and a few cans of beer rather than ocean-harvested kombu and mountain vegetables gently simmered followed by a sweet cup of amazake. However I was pleasantly surprised when the authors stated up front that "Japanese people don't eat this way", and acknowledged that many of these foods will be more readily available in an American health food store than in a Japanese supermarket.

With that fresh start, I was able to enjoy "Japanese Foods that Heal" for what it is, a brilliant guide to eighteen traditional Japanese ingredients that are powerhouses of health, with medicinal properties that strengthen the human body and provide resources and defenses against all manner of illnesses. Each ingredient is considered in-depth, talking about the traditional harvesting/creation methods, the known medicinal properties of that ingredient, and the traditional healing powers associated with it. The authors are careful to state what is a proven effect of the food and what is only a "potential" effect. Some of the foods, such as miso and green tea, are quite familiar and well-known for their health value. Others, such as soy sauce and the sweetener mirin, were more of a surprise, as I had not thought of them as having any particular value other than as a flavoring agent. Some of the ingredients I had never heard of, such as seitan and mizu ame, which the author admits you would need to either make yourself or find at a specialized store.

While there are recipes for each ingredient included, "Japaneses Foods that Heal" cannot really be considered a cookbook. About five or six simple recipes with no photographs are all you get for each item, and the bulk of the text is educating you about the food itself. While the recipes are easy to make and delicious, I was more intrigued by the concept put forward of using these foods in regular recipes replacing items of little nutritional value, such as refined salt or white sugar, with more nutritious substitutes like mirin or the salty picked-plum umeboshi. Definitely something to give a try.

The only drawback to this book is that the authors reinforce the stereotype that eating healthy means eating expensive. When they talk about soy sauce, they are quick to distinguish between the mass-produced condiment available anywhere, and the healthy, hand-processed variety only made in few places and only available at specialty stores for quite a bit more than you would expect to pay. The cheap stuff, they say, isn't worth your time. The same story is told for almost every food, with a lengthy description of its traditional, healthy processing method followed by a disclaimer saying how the majority is now chemically produced in factories, and you will have to search out and be prepared to pay for the good stuff.

Miracle Foods
By Nathanael Greene
This is a superb gem of a book, extremely valuable for the rare nutritional "food is medicine" information it provides concerning 18 different, "traditionally"-made, Japanese ingredients - I know of no other book, including Japanese cookbooks, which provides this unique nutritional information.

The appearance of a book containing this unique information is long overdue.

The authors are highly qualified to write this unique book, John being a research biologist with extensive (25 years) laboratory experience in medical research at two U.S. universities. Both John and Jan spent over a year in Japan living with a Japanese family and learning how to make miso in the "traditional" way.

Japanese medicinal foods produced by "traditional" methods include UNREFINED, FERMENTED, UNPASTEURIZED or MALTED foods, which means that one has to read the product labels or vendor websites VERY CAREFULLY, e.g., on Shoyru, Tamari, toasted sesame oil, brown rice MALT syrup, miso and tofu. Included at the end of the book (p. 221) is an indispensable "Shopping Resources" guide, in which vendor websites are listed. Unfortunately, South River Miso company is not listed: [...] - this company's traditionally-made and unpasteurized miso and tamari are rare and excellent, but this company DOES NOT SHIP ITS PERISHABLE PRODUCTS DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS!

Regular Japanese food stores in the U.S. DO NOT carry the "traditionally" made Japanese medicinal foods discussed in this book, but only carry products produced in Japan by modern, INDUSTRIALIZED methods.

Each chapter in the book uniformly and consistently follows a standardized analytical format. This book's contents must be read very carefully, particularly the information under each chapter's "Shopping For . . . " entry.

This book is not a traditional cookbook. However, some representative recipes are included. The few recipes provided in each chapter are very good ones.

These "traditionally"-made Japanese foods have nearly become extinct in post-WW II Japan. However, because of their unique "food is medicine" qualities, these rare foods deserve to make a major popular comeback. Oddly, this comeback is happening in U.S. health-food stores - which are a major export market for these rare Japanese-made foods - rather than in Japan (at least so far).

Right Brained Readers will love this book!
By A Customer
The Chinese Way to Health deals with so many different elements. Beautiful full color photographs showing actual herbs, massage techniques, explaining the maridians of the body and more. This is quite the rererence book for diagnosing problems and determining solutions. Easy to understand diagrams that are cross rererenced by diet, food preperation, massage etc. WHY DO I SAY IT IS FOR RIGHT BRAINED PEOPLE? Simply because I am a person with a very short attention span and find it hard to digest straight text with long explanations. The author has effectively caputured a way to use the visual aids of beautiful full color photography and marry it with the clinical information. Strong logic plays a part in Traditional Chinese Medicine and author, Stephen Gascoigne has conjoined the knowledge of the Ancients with the hunger of my knowledge. I lent out this book to a friend and never got it back. I used it as a reference so much that I have came to Amazon to replace it.

A great basic guide
By EricaLynn
This book is exactly what I was looking for. Use the "look inside" option that Amazon offers. It has basics that you can read details on and also has several table charts that help to treat illness very simply. Love it and refer to it often.
