Smith is the author but it's really all about Felix Leong

This series of books were put together by Smith as if he came up with this branch of thinking. He didn't but he puts forward the idea that he did. The pictures don't show Smith at all, they show Grandmaster "Felix Leong" who resides in Adelaide, who I don't think is ever mentioned in any of the books but deserves the credit. Basically what you get is Felix doing his thing and someone attempting to analyse it. Smith does a reasonable job but these books have major flaws in their sequencing of photo's. There are still many valuable tips contained within the pages and worth every cent. No book will ever replace going to a real master anyway especially Felix. If you're in Adelaide drop in to Sifu Felix's centre in Hinley Street. His linage is from three schools: Hong Kong- Grandmaster Yip Chun; Foshan- Grandmaster Pan Nam; Guongzhou: Grandmaster Sum Nung and Lei Chi Wah. He has a major focus on sticky hands (chi-sao) and free sparring and students can come in any time of the day and train. I once was his student until I moved away from Adelaide and have never found anyone adequate to replace him. I understand that this is typical of anyone blabbing about their first master but still, there are many students there who have blackbelts in other arts before doing WC and rave about Felix and WC.[..]

Suprisingly good

As a Martial artist for over a decade now i was suprised to read a book that wasn't just an advertisment for somebodys school. He puts forward interesting theories and lets you decide to take away what if anything you wish .
Ps begginers in martial arts should never, never, try to larn from books its just bad news trust me, unlearning is ten times harder than learning get out there and do some research and find a good techer.

I believe that every man will choose what he will wish to train in. Whether it be Wing Chung, or Jujistu. The thing that will make that man is character and values, Joseph is simply stating the princilpe of Wing Chung. We all know that it goes much deaper than just seeing pictures, and working through two man drills. True Wing Chun is way of life and could never be depicted by a book........

Superb Reference, But Fairly Dated

I bought this book primarily as a comapanion to A Japanese Reader: Graded Lessons for Mastering the Written Language (Tuttle Language Library), which was designed to accompany the Martin book. Only Lessons 18-30 of the Miller book are meant to be used alongside Martin, but they are tied somewhat closely. Though I have some solid experience with Japanese, I did find that there were a few forms in Miller that would trip me up a bit, and it was also assumed you would already have gotten the vocabulary from Martin (though it was somewhat rare for me not to know the words, as the vocabulary was mostly very basic), so I thought it would be worth having.

The book (Martin's) covers an enormous amount of ground very quickly. I don't think I could recommend it as a first book on Japanese, unless you were willing to spend quite a lot of time hammering in the knowledge from each page yourself. The book was chiefly intended for people who were already actually living in Japanese, and needed a roadmap to the language. Both the vocabulary and the grammar can be quite old, including terms that really aren't used so much any more, or aren't used in the same ways (this may have changed since; my copy is a used 2nd edition, revised in 1956). Still, most of what you see in this book still applies today.

The book does a very excellent job of explaining difficult and complex concepts as simply as possible, where many other texts struggle ineffectively to convey them. It also describes Japanese pronunciation much more accurately than I have ever seen elsewhere. I would recommend this for any student of Japanese who has had some experience with the language; however, due to its out-datedness and very, very brisk pace, I don't think I'd recommend it for new students of the language.

The book is both exhaustive and concise, which makes it a superb reference or grammar-refreshment book. Perhaps the best recommendation I can give it, is that it taught me more about Japanese in one book than I've previously gotten through several successions of college textbooks.

One of the Best Self-Teachers Available

I concur with the other users of this site in my opinion of this book. You really can learn colloquial Japanese from this book. It is a bit dated - it was, I believe, originally written for American GI's and missionaries who found themselves in Japan after World War II and needed a good self teaching book which could be used on the ground, preferably with a native speaker to go through the material with you or at least to provide pointers on pronunciation. However, this doesn't mean that what you're learning is too basic. Virtually every feature of the spoken language is at least touched on, and best of all, there are a lot of illustrative sentences for every item covered. The whole book is split into only ten lessons, and each lesson seems to last forever, but when you actually start working with the book it is much easier than it initially appears.
There is another book by Martin out that includes copies of the dialogues from this book in written Japanese, if you really feel a need for that. While of course it is a nice idea to be able to work with the writing system immediately when learning a new language, with Japanese I don't really really believe that this is a good idea. All told, Japanese is probably the most difficult language in the world to learn to read and write correctly, more so than Chinese, so I would suggest to the would-be learner that she work with this book for a while and then start on the written language with other learning materials.

Essential Japanese

This is the third book I've bought on learning Japanese. Unfortunatly, it's a lot like the other books. But i still think it's a good book to buy for anyone interested in the language. I thought the pace which it introduces vocabulary and the writing system were very good. A good part about the book (or bad depending on your tastes) is that you learn kanji. People that are interested in bettering their Japanese writing skills should also check out the book "A Japanese Reader" which goes along with "Essential Japanese", and introduces students to actual Japanese works, in how they appear in Japan. Enjoy the book! Japanese is a very interesting language and well worth the time!

Alfred A. Yuson was born and raised in Manila, and has received numerous literary awards, including the South East Asia Writers' Award given by Thai royalty. About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist for decades, and is considered a leading authority and master of the art. An avid teacher, LaFosse co-founded the Origamido Studio, a learning center and design studio dedicated to the art of origami, and the only place in the world specializing in hand papermaking for the origami artist. LaFosse co-curated Origami Now!, a wildly popular, year-long exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. A little too simple

The paper in this kit is awesome. Fun and colorful.

However, the origami is so simple that most of the bugs don't even look like bugs. I felt bad for my kid, I kept asking him, "What is that?" I looked at the book and his models looked just like the ones in the book.

Disappointed, he finally decided to use the paper for other models that actually looked like something. I understand wanting to keep it simple, but when the final model doesn't resemble anything, then it's not worth it.

If you bought this and want to know what else to do with the paper, there's lots of good origami models on the internet.

disappointed

I'm a 2nd generation korean hoping to pass on the little korean I know to my toddlers. i don't think this book will "teach" them much... or at least properly, but they're more into pictures right now than stories anyway. Illustrations are nice.

The first page starts with "A" is for "achim"... but I think I was looking for something that would teach my kids the actual korean alphabet... not the english alphabet and the corresponding korean sound...

This book is adorable with great pictures and it introduces a little bit of Korean culture, which is great for my young ones because I am Korean American and have not taught Korean as much to my three year old. Now she is showing interest, so I wanted to teach her korean before I send her to Korean school. I bought this book and Tuttle korean for kids flash cards kit. It is working out great. I just wished this book was organized by the korean alphabet not American.

the illustrations are very nice and it's a very cute way of adding some new korean vocabulary. You won't speak korean after reading this of course but I think children enjoy the way this book teaches new simple vocab.

This is more than a dictionary, giving an informative background to the language. The section explaining the Vietnamese alphabet and diacritic's is especially useful. It puts all other VN/Eng. dictionaries I have tried in the shade. Excellent value.

Great little dictionary

Great little dictionary, has been very helpful in our learning of the Vietnamese language. It truly is a mini pocket size dictionary but it contains a lot and has good descriptions of the tones.

About the Author
Robin L. Rielly holds a sixth-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate from the Japan Karate Association and a second-degree black belt in Shin Kage-Ryu from the Kobukan School in Yokohama, Japan. He is the author of Tuttle's Complete Shotokan Karate and Japan's Complete Fighting System: Shin Kage Ryu. He is currently chairman of the Technical Committee for the East Coast Karate Association.

Shotokan Revealed

The Secrets of Shotokan Karate by Robin L. Rielly Is a must have for those who want to get the most out Shotokan-ryu. Together with mister Rielly's Complete Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-2108-9, no more thorough grounding in Shotokan-ryu can be had. But if what you are looking for is a book for the beginner to learn the fundamentals I would suggest getting Hidetaka Nishiyama and Richard C. Brown's Karate: the Art of "Empty Hand" Fighting, ISBN 0-8048-1668-9.
The Secrets of Shotokan Karate details the methods for generating balance, stability, force, and speed. Explained are the principles of distancing, timing, hip and stance shifting, and strategy. Of special interest is the section on hip shifting for it is one of the more subtle connections Karate has with the Chinese arts of Taijiquan and Kung Fu. Separate chapters are devoted to Kumite and Kata. The chapter on Kumite includes helpful drills for mastering this aspect of the art. The chapter on Kata is especially enlightening in explaining what is meant by the "hidden meaning of Kata". Included in the Kata chapter is a detailed step-by-step explanation of Kanku Dai and its applications.
This book takes the Karate-ka from a mere practitioners of an exercise to the mastery of the techniques and principles required for the making of a martial artist.

A good supplement to training

I have always advocated subtantial reading together with normal training and R. Rielly has done a pretty good job. His explanations are clear and to the point, supported by numerous photos for visualisation. However, these "words" only come alive if the reader has performed the moves physically. I would have preferred clearer photos with some zoom-ins to stress vital points. On the whole an excellent book for the intermediate to advanced karate student.

A-Z hand book of shotokan.

The author gives excellent background and history of this martial art form. Excellent descriptions and understand of forms through photos and detail descriptions of movements. Easy to read and put to practical use. Recommend this text for anyone who has an interest in the martial art discipline.
