OK for basic words but a liability

This small dictionary seems to be modelled on Robertson's Thai dictionary. In this context it is light years ahead of its model. But it is next to useless for all but very basic vocab. Be warned too, that nine times out of ten the word you are stuck for will not be there, and if perchance it is, there will be no help at all on usage. The transliteration is terrible and often misleading or wrong. Be careful too because the meanings are likely to also be sufficiently incomplete or even wrong to create some embarrassment. Not very useful for anybody wanting to communicate in Khmer, and completely inadequate for anybody wanting to learn the language.

GREAT!

This book is amazing! Most Khmers books that i'd encounter just have an english word, then a khmer translation that's written in Khmer. This book gives a khmer pronunciation that's written in english, as well as Khmer. Somebody here gave it a bad review and I really don't understand why? That person said this book can cause embarassment but I disagree! If you can't play ball, don't blame the ball. Most of the words, if not all are accurate. What I think this book lacks is an audio CD that people can listen to. Otherwise, I think it's a great book. I got it at the library, I will buy it. Also, it's pocket size, very convenient.

Good quick reference

The Tuttle Practical Cambodian Dictionary is a good quick reference guide. Pocket sized and easy to carry, it isn't designed to be comprehensive, but has most of the essential words and phrases one is likely to encounter in everyday usage. I have some minor quibbles on pronunciation of a few words, but, spoken Khmer is often at variance with the written form of the words. For technical translation, a more comprehensive dictionary is a must, but for travelers and translation of simple documents, this is a fine tool.

About the Author
Michael L. Kluemper served as a board member for the National Council of Japanese Language Teachers from 2001—08, and has worked on national task forces for the implementation of a Japanese AP course. He lives in Louisville, KY.

Lisa Berkson was honored by the Association of Indiana Teachers of Japanese as the language teacher of the year in 2007. She currently teaches Japanese and Chinese language classes at Dobson High School in Mesa, AZ.

Nathan Patton teaches Japanese language at Scott County High School in Georgetown, KY where he serves as Chair of the World Language Department.

Nobuko Patton has taught Japanese at the University of Kentucky, Georgetown College and Jessie Clark Middle School in Lexington, KY. She lives in Kentucky.

Probably best only in classroom setting.

I saw this in a local bookstore and was charmed by its attractive look and use of manga for dialogues.
I picked it up and started to go through it deeper at home.

My early conclusion is that this book is intended for use in a classroom as a textbook, and not something for individual self-study. Here's why:
1) The other reviews are correct when saying that you really need to feel very comfortable with hiragana and katakana before you come to this book. I expect that in a classroom, the teacher would spend as much time as necessary to introduce the kana. And being fairly systematic, they leave it to the teacher to go about it however he/she sees fit. As an example, in an early activity, the book challenges you to write your English name in katakana. But it doesn't go into any detail about how to convert sounds which aren't in Japanese to katakana.

2) Also, the book doesn't have English translations of the dialogues, or many of the vocabulary words. This is obviously not a problem in a classroom setting. It's possible to look up words one at a time in the dictionary in the back, but leaving them out in the chapters themselves just seems like evidence that their target audience is classroom students.

3) The website component has extra materials but you have to be part of a class to make use of it. The teacher has to make a special account and then when you create your username, you have to pick which teacher is yours. So self-learners are missing out on some amount of content that they paid for.

4) I don't like that all exercises are relegated to the Workbook sold separately. I thought the Workbook would be only for additional practice, and that the main book would have some exercises too. But so far it seems like all the exercises in the main book are clearly intended for classrooms where you would talk with your friends in pairs.

this book is great for self study if you are dedicated enough

I picked this book up at boarders for 20% off since it's liquidating and I love it. don't believe what those other reviews say about needing a working knowledge of hiragana before starting this book. this book offers complete alphabets with phonetic translations, the CD rom that comes with the book helps you out with the more difficult sounds. You DO NOT need to join a teachers class to gain full access to the online materials. the only thing you need to join it for is the games section because that is hosted by a third party website designed for school use. you could pay 150 bucks to gain access to it but you don't need to. the content that is readily available to you even before you make an account on the website offers kana and konji flash cards and kana workbooks with some activities. there is little translation for you in the text book itself when it comes to the dialogue and some vocab but it offers pictures so it makes you work your brain more which will help learning. also this book teaches you to read and write as you speak so you use more of you senses while learning which helps retain information. also I find if I'm stuck on a word I can almost see what it looks like in japanese and all of a sudden I can remember it!
This book is meant for classroom use so some of the exercises in it are kind of awkward, the work book would not be a bad buy but I don't think you need it if you just steadily work on the content in the book. get down the vocab and suggested hiragana before progressing to the next chapter, a chapter a week maybe. there is no quick and easy way to learn a language but this is the best i've come across yet. Oh and for supplementary work I have a DS game, My Japanese Language Coach, I play every now and then to just reinforce what I'm learning in the book and pick up a few extra vocab words. Plus there is several online japanese word games you can play and websites with japanese children's book you can try reading when you feel more confident. bottom line this is a great book for classroom study and self study if you are dedicated enough.

I love this textbook!!

I am using Beginning Japanese in my classroom, with high school students, and We are enjoying it very much.

First of all, my students love the manga for the dialogues. It facilitates students engaging learning and understand the context. My students ask me for a permission to take the textbook home!

I like the content, too. The Dialogues, which are also in straight text, are longer than those of AIJ; so I feel that it is more practical, and there is A LOT of cultural content (including traditional and contemporary culture, social interactions, and even its historythat). I love the point that "culture notes" are NOT separated from the main component. My students also enjoy them, we have a chat about the component or context every time after reading a dialogue.

We love the vocubulary lists with creative and cute pictures/drawings with colores! My students often smile with the pictures/drawings and ask me some questions about the pictures because those reflect Japanese cultural. (ex. "telephone" is introduced with a picture of a green public phone seen in Japan.) It may be a bit inconvenient because there is no English equivarent with those vocab. pictures, but the textbook has glossaries after each chapter and at end of the textbook. So I encourage my students to utilize those glossaries in order to build their self-learning skills.

Our school for sure will purchase "Intermediate Japanese" when it is published!

"The Journey" is a realistic and rich novel which deals with the themes of love and greed in Japan near the end of the American Occupation. The author creates a sensitive portrait of the impact of American influence in Japan. The changing country is on a journey, but the country is not the only "character" which is on a journey. What makes the novel so interesting is that all the characters and their relationships with each other form a kind of web. They all affect each other in their actions and decisions. The main characters of the novel are affected by the changes caused by American influence on Japanese society and culture. Taeko uses the freedom in post-war Japan to get a job and to try to make something out of her life, while other characters, such as Ryosuke, use this change for purposes of greed. Okamoto is the opposite of Ryosuke. He changes his attitude on life and abandons the path of greed which he had followed all of his life. The character development is especially fascinating because the characters are changing for the better or for the worse in a country that is also changing for the better or the worse. While the era in which the novel is set in may be in the past, we can all relate to the characters in the novel because the themes and problems of their lives are timeless.

About the Author
Sarah Ann Wormald is from Ilkley, West Yorkshire in the UK where she previously worked as a Solicitor. Sarah began diving in 1999 in the Red Sea in Egypt and after having dived in numerous destinations around the world she moved to Indonesia in 2007. Since her move to Asia, Sarah has become a Instructor who has shared her passion with hundreds of students through teaching them how to explore the underwater world.

When Sarah is not teaching she spends her time traveling Indonesia diving and photographing. From the outset of this project Sarah's aim was to promote operators who dive safely and who protect and care for the reefs around them. Sarah's interests in Indonesian reefs, marine life, adventure and exploration led her to begin working on this book in 2013. Sarah currently lives and works full time in Indonesia.

A really great book about environmental friendly resorts

It contains some of the world's best dive sites all in Indonesia and recommends Dive Resort which take care of their environment.
Some of them i already know . The other resorts which were unknown to me i will go to and check them out. Since Indonesia is the best dive site in the world for me.

Wonderful ... with one major problem

I've never given any Amazon product only 1 star out of 5, but I'm hesitatingly doing so today because these flash cards -- while superior to other flash cards in nearly every respect -- contain one fatal flaw: the definition of each character is given on the front of each card (in the form of a picture) along with the character itself. This is contrary to all the latest research about how kids learn best. ONLY the character should be on one side of the card, and everything else should be on the other. Including pictures, Pinyin and radicals with these cards is awesome, something that most competitors don't do. When the cards are reprinted with just the characters on one side, I will happily give them a 5.

Tuttle Chinese For Kids Flash Cards

I've always LOVE flash cards for our children. The Chinese flash cards includes radicals and Pinyin (It is used to spell out the sounds of Chinese words in Roman letters). It is a written aid to pronunciation. Pinyin are NOT alphabets since Chinese writing doesn't use an alphabet. The front side of the flash cards contain also a picture of the character. The back side of the flash cards contain English translation and how the character is used in sentences. I like the flash cards and used for teaching purpose for our children and they love them, too. Also, the box includes a big poster of all 64 Chinese words so great if one might want to post in their child's room. (Smile) One last item is it comes with a CD as well. Overall, the flash cards are nice for anyone who wants to learn beginning Mandarin Chinese especially young children.
