Japanese Architecture: A Short History (Tuttle Classics), by A. L. Sadler

This expert guide to Japanese architecture is of enormous historical importance to the understanding of Japanese design and culture.

Pioneering Japanologist A. L. Sadler's invaluable study of Japanese architecture first appeared in 1941. Considered a classic in its field, unequaled in clarity and insight, Japanese Architecture A Short History is a lucid and uncomplicated introduction to this important aspect of Japanese culture. Beginning with the earliest evidences from prehistory and ending with the Edo period, when Japan attained stature as a modern state, Japanese Architecture is as relevant today as it was in 1941.

The book includes an overview of Japanese domestic architecture as it evolved through successive periods of history and perfected the forms so widely admired in the West. Of particular importance in this respect are the four concluding chapters, in which the distinctive features of the Japanese house are presented in clear detail. The architecture book also contains excellent illustrations, which show details of planning and construction.

Japanese architecture over the years
By Zack Davisson
A.L. Sadler's 1941 book "Japanese Architecture: A Short History" is one of several books Sadler wrote to help introduce the West to the then-unknown culture of Japan. More than just a textbook or academic exercise, Sadler infuses his description of Japanese architecture with short lessons on Japanese culture and society. One cannot separate the building from the people, after all.

"Japanese Architecture" goes through each period a chapter at a time, from the Early Period (660 BC - 540 AD) up to the Edo Period (1616 - 1860 AD). He then discusses some of the special features of Japanese architecture, such as the shoji screens, the bathroom, and the ceilings. He goes into some depth of the building regulations of the Tokugawa period, which prescribed what kind of house you could live in by what class you were born into.

By "short history," Sadler isn't kidding. Each period gets only a few pages to cover several hundred years, which makes for quick and easy reading. Fully a third of the book is illustrations. Unfortunately, the illustrations are not spread throughout the text but collected in the back as an appendix. That means you have to do a lot of flipping back and forth as you read the book to look at the picture that Sadler is describing.

I enjoyed "Japanese Architecture: A Short History" even though the writing was a bit dry. I was happy for the short chapters, and I wish the pictures had been published next to the text instead of in the back. I don't know if this is how the book originally appeared in 1941 or not, but that is likely. When I lived in Japan I was curious about the different types of buildings, particularly in the shrines and temples that appear everywhere but are often stylistically different. Thanks to Sadler's book I have a better grasp of the architecture and can better place when a particular building was made by what style it is in.

Outstanding Cookbook for Pros and the Kitchen Challenged!
By G. Z.
This is my first review even after years and thousands of dollars in purchases on Amazon. I felt I owed it to the author after finally feeling thrilled with a cookbook purchase.

As an aspiring "home chef" without talent or experience, I've bought dozens of cookbooks hoping to find one that would enable me to create cuisine, not just mundane meals. Sadly, I have been let down countless times. Sure, my lack of cooking skills puts me at a huge disadvantage, but I'm not buying complex books. I tried to stick with cookbooks that focused on the novice. In the end, my dishes looked nothing like the photos, tasted nothing like the description, and left me with little more than dirty dishes and buyer's remorse.

The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook changed that for me. I've now cooked six meals from within these pages and every single one of them left me literally smiling at first bite. Just like one of those corny food commercials. :) Here's why:

1. The ingredients were all found at my local supermarket...unlike books that sent me to far away places in search of obscure spices that I'd never use again.

2. The book was fun to read, kept my attention, and gave me insight like no other cookbook had given me in the past. Most just started right in with the recipes, leaving me with more questions than answers. Unlike the Steamy Kitchen, they focused on the "how" without ever addressing the "why".

3. The steps were easy to follow, the dishes easy to prepare, and the end result actually matched the photos. The other cookbooks I bought should have come with a sous chef because I was way out of my element. I never realized how inadequate they were until I read and followed this book.

4. The flavors were solid, delicious, and spot-on. I couldn't believe I made these meals. They seemed complex to the taste but they were actually quite easy to make. I wasn't the only one in our family raving about the food I cooked. If you knew me, you'd know how incredible that is.

The Scallops & Fruit Salsa...amazing. The Salmon with Cucumber Relish...amazing (I used her 250-degree slow-cook method instead of steaming). The Crab Cakes...best I have EVER tasted. I could go on and on. And I will, in my kitchen, until I've cooked every meal in the book.

If you are hesitant to purchase this book...don't be. Even if you actually ARE a chef, unlike me, you'll find the dishes and flavors to be divine. But if you're a hazard waiting to happen in the kitchen, like me, this book will literally motivate you to keep trying.

Yeah...it's that good.

best cookbook i own
By sugarbump
I love buying cookbooks. I love the pictures, the recipes, and trying new things. However, not many cookbooks have appealed to me because of their long, complicated recipes, so most of the time, these lovely cookbooks end up sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

A good friend of mine got me this for Christmas, and I literally jumped for joy when I opened the package. Jaden is one of my favorite food bloggers, and I couldn't wait to try out her new recipes.

I feel like she gets it-- who wants to spend 8 hours at work, only to come home and spend another 3 hours on dinner after stopping by the grocery to buy 50 things you didn't have and are only going to use once? She gets that I need dinner now, I want it good, and I want it to only LOOK like I spent a lot of time on it. This book is perfect. Her recipes are fresh, fun, and very simple. I've made some good stuff in a dinky studio kitchen (with no oven), and my husband is happy after a long day at pharmacy school. I HIGHLY recommend it, even for your kitchen-fearing friends!

I also bought this book for a friend of mine who lives in Florida. I told her no excuses about not being to cook Asian food; if Jaden can do it, she can!

If you like the blog, you will like the book
By Samuel Dram
If you've ever read the "steamy kitchen" blog then you already know whether you want this book or not. If you like the style of that blog, then you will love this book.

If you've never read it, the gist of it is that she rewrites of a whole bunch of recipes from different Asian countries, reconstitutes and presents them in a way that makes Asian food accessible to middle America.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you are looking for authentic recipes, this is not the book for you. If you are looking to make your meals more "Asian" but don't have a lot of experience with Asian food, and you enjoy the bloggy tone of the "steamy kitchen" site, then you will like this book.

If you have "Shiok" don't get this
By Serene Seah
being a Singaporean, have always loved Terry Tan's books. have tried to love this book. It being a hardcover copy, it's easy to read layout appealed me...but upon closer look, the recipes seem familiar...oh too familiar...no, they were juz not what I'd tasted at home, but from what I'd read somewhere. So I took out my "Shiok" cookbook by terry Tan (where recipes aren't arranged in an alphabetical order) & compared the recipes from this book

Golly....they were the same...word for word. So if you have "Shiok", please don't get this book, unless you fancy the same old stuff in a slightly larger print & format & a hardcover.

Fascinating and intriguing cookbook!
By SandrasKitchenNook
This is a beautiful, fascinating, well-thought-out cookbook. It begins with some history and information, then sort of a dictionary (with pictures which is great!) of Singapore ingredients, before moving on to a section called 'Marinades, Chutneys, Sambals and Achars' which also includes recipes for making your own curry powders (there's more than one) and Garam Masala Spice Mix. From there it moves on to 'Snacks, Soups and Salad', "Breads, Rice and Noodles', Chicken and Duck', 'Seafood', 'Meat', 'Vegetables' and finishes with 'Desserts'. There are lovely photos of the dishes, and the recipes are clear and easy to follow. You will want to have a good specialty food store nearby for ingredients such as pandanus leaves and juice, fresh cardamom pods, fish cake and fresh tumeric root.

I am intrigued by these dishes as they are very different from what I'm used to eating. I'm hoping to make Curry Puffs in the near future. I love the Quick Rice with Chicken and I can't wait to try the Bergedel Potato Fish Cakes. I also want to make up the spices to have on hand over time, I just have to get a couple of the spices (like fenugreek seeds) that I'm missing.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook and highly recommend it to anyone. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I received a copy of this book from Tuttle Publishing for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One of the best cookbooks for Singaporean cuisine
By Lynn
Very nice full page photos of Singaporean food and pretty authentic recipes. A good volume to give to people interested in South East Asian cuisine, or other Singaporeans who are away from home and miss the food terribly. Instructions are easy to follow, but not all the ingredients are readily available. Many recipes also require a special stock or sambal that has to be prepared before-hand in bulk. Singaporean cooking usually requires many ingredients and quite a bit of effort, so it's not recommended for those who are looking for recipes for quick, fuss-free dinners.

Artist of Life (Bruce Lee Library), by Bruce Lee, John Little

A rare, never-before-seen collection of Bruce Lee's private letters and writing!

Bruce Lee was an intense man with such sheer concentration of energy that no one who encountered him, on screen or in person, could help but be drawn to him and his enthusiasm for life and knowledge. A voracious and engaged reader, Lee wrote extensively, synthesizing the thought of East and West into a unique personal philosophy of self-discovery. Bruce Lee: Artist of Life explores the development and fruition of Bruce Lee's thoughts about gung fu (kung fu), philosophy, psychology, poetry, jeet kune do, acting, and self-knowledge.

This volume from Bruce Lee's private notebooks is capped by a selection of Lee's letters that eloquently demonstrate how he incorporated his thought into actions and advice to others. Also included are multiple drafts of select compositions, showing how Lee's thought evolved and was refined over the years and how the ideas he was reading and writing about were reflected in his work and everyday life.

Sections include:

  • Gung Fu—reflections on gung fu, psychology in defense and attack, how to choose a martial arts instructor, and Bruce's own view on the martial art
  • Philosophy—regarding human understanding, Taoism, Plato, Socrates, and Descartes
  • Psychology—three types of philosophy, the top dog and the underdog, the four basic philosophical approaches, and learning
  • Poetry—'The Dying Sun,' 'Love is a Friendship Caught on Fire,' 'Once More I Hold You in My Arms,' and 'Parting'
  • Jeet Kune Do–The Liberation—toward personal liberation, notes on JKD, true mastery, and an objective evaluation of the combative skill of Bruce Lee, by those who know what it is
  • Acting—what exactly is an actor, the art of acting
  • Self-knowledge—in search of someone real, self-actualization, and the passionate state of mind
  • Letters—'The True Meaning of Life–Peace of Mind,' 'Use Your Own Experience and Imagination,' and 'It's All in the State of Mind'

From Booklist
Decades after his death, fascination with martial arts superstar Lee continues. Editor Little and Lee's widow, Linda Lee Caldwell, contend Lee was much more than the acrobatic guy on the silver screen. He was a "philosopher . . . able to apply specific principles of his art to the broader endeavor of living life as a `real' human being." Toward that goal, Lee wrote the essays on acting, martial arts, and self-knowledge collected here. In fact, most of them touch on the quest for self-knowledge and, in conjunction with specimens of Lee's letters and poetry, enhance appreciation of the man. Specific topics range from the cerebral (e.g., "Psychology in Defense and Attack") to the practical (e.g., "How to Choose a Martial Art Instructor"), and pithy nuggets (e.g., "Truth cannot be structured or confused") are highlighted. Movie stars aren't always the deepest people around, once the conversation turns from showbiz, but Lee's writings are inspired and inspirational, of interest to his fans and to the multitudes seeking the meaning of life. Mike Tribby

PRIVATE LESSONS WITH BRUCE LEE!
By A Customer
I've just finished reading "Bruce Lee: Artist ofLife" -- what a book! It was just like having a private lessonwith Bruce Lee on a host of different topics! I enjoyed spending time with him as he discoursed on gung fu and Chinese culture; then attending philosophy classes with him at the University of Washington; moving from there on to the study of the mind as he explored the Gestalt approach to psychology; and then listening to him wax poetic about life, longing and lovers separated by fate; then it was a journey into the inner recesses of the soul to learn about "personal liberation" through JKD; his views on acting followed, revealing how he applied all of the foregoing into his films, and then, finally, his profoundly personal essays "In My Own Process" allowed Bruce to share with me his views on the process of his life. Again, what a magnificent book and what an incredible human being it reveals. This is my favorite volume in The Bruce Lee Library Series and I, for one, quite enjoy the breadth and scope of this volume. If you're interested just in JKD -- read volume three in this series; if you're interested in just gung fu -- read volume two (both are devoted exclusively to these respective modes of combat); if you want more of Bruce Lee's private letters -- you will enjoy volume five. But if you're looking for a great anthology of Bruce Lee's most important writings, you HAVE to read this book! It's the only book that covers all the bases in the totality of Bruce Lee's interests and beliefs. A great read.

INCREDIBLE NEW INFORMATION ON BRUCE LEE
By Grant Reynolds
I had to wait six weeks for the Barnes and Noble store in my area to restock "Bruce Lee: Artist of Life" -- but it was well worth the wait! This is the greatest Bruce Lee book I've ever seen! Not only is there new, never-before-published material in almost every section, but Mr. Little has done Bruce Lee a great service by reproducing some of the writings that had been published previously (both in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do and in the Bruce Lee Library Series) in the original format that Bruce Lee first wrote them. I particularly enjoyed the never-before-published drafts of Bruce's great essay "Jeet Kune Do: Toward Personal Liberation." There are new and subtle differences in each version of the famous essay as Bruce works it over with each draft. I understand that this represents "the essential writings" of Bruce Lee, that is, a representative anthology of Bruce's writings in many different areas. It certainly is "essential" -- it's the best Bruce Lee book I've ever read and essential for anyone who wishes a full and complete understanding of the totality of the man. If you are looking for a book that is both a great introduction to the phenomenon that is Bruce Lee as well as a book that will inspire you to fully actualize yourself...this is the book you've been waiting for!

OUTSTANDING!
By A Customer
BRUCE LEE: ARTIST OF LIFE is unquestionably the greatest Bruce Lee book (in the sense of being a pure Bruce Lee book) ever written. John Little has done a masterful job of compiling and editing an absolutely huge amount of materials into a unified and coherent whole. The book also reveals something I've felt for a long time but, until now, have lacked the evidence to prove; namely, that Bruce Lee was much more than a martial artist. While Chuck Norris and Van Damme continue to play schoolyard games of "who's the toughest?" (Norris, particularly is still at this level), it is obvious that Bruce Lee had long ago moved past this stage and was onto something far deeper and more meaningful with his "process of becoming," having transcended the martial art realm (poetry, psychology, philosophy, etc.)and becoming, ultimately, an "artist of life." This is an outstanding book by an outstanding man and is extremely motivational and inspiring. Which is something few books (and authors) can deliver in a man's lifetime.

Ningyo: The Art of the Japanese Doll, by Alan Scott Pate, Lynton Gardiner

Ningyo: The Art of the Japanese Doll features over 250 unique photographs as well as extensive commentary and background history.

Japanese dolls (ningyo) have played an important role in Japanese art and culture since its earliest stages of development, as talismanic figures, centerpieces, in elaborate festivals, medical study tools, theater distractions, decorative objects, and avidly collected art forms, as well as childhood playthings. Ningyo: The Art of the Japanese Doll is the most comprehensive book on antique Japanese dolls and figurines published in English. The book focuses on the many types of Japanese dolls:

  • gosho: palace dolls
  • hina: Girl's Day dolls
  • musha: warrior dolls for the Boy's Day Festival
  • isho: fashion dolls
The principle forms of the dolls and their history, stylistic development, cultural context, and economic imperatives are discussed against the backdrop of Edo-period society and popular culture. Beautifully detailed color photographs of ningyo drawn from private collections, many of which are published here for the first time, as well as images of related materials selected from celebrated museums and temple collections, such as folding screens, woodblock prints, sculpture, painting ceramics, and textiles, help place the dolls in context. Ningyo: The Art of the Japanese Doll is a fascinating book for anyone interested in Asian doll art and doll collecting.

A 'must' for any studying Japanese doll history and art
By Midwest Book Review
Japanese dolls are more than just collector's items: they've planed an important cultural role in Japan's society as talismanic figures, festival centerpieces, medical study tools, and more. It's surprising, therefore, that Ningyo: The Art Of The Japanese Doll is the first comprehensive book in English to cover antique Japanese dolls. Six categories of dolls - palace dolls, Girl's Day dolls, Boy's Day dolls, costume and theatrical dolls, and those connected with health, were made during the Edo period: color photos from private collections detail these dolls and provide historical background as well as lovely, full-color photos. A 'must' for any studying Japanese doll history and art.

WARRIORS, ACTORS, AND DEMONS
By Jack Keely
Alan Scott Pate’s impressive book is a detailed exploration of ningyo, an enthralling array of dolls from Japan’s Edo period (1615 – 1868). The dolls are creations of wood, silk, and gofun (a paste of crushed oyster shells which creates their porcelain white faces). The term “doll” is somewhat misleading as these are not playthings. The meticulously detailed figures were intended to commemorate, entertain, and educate. Some were used in the theater and others by medical practitioners. The figures range from a fierce warrior battling a tiger to an undersea princess riding a turtle, and from exotically costumed actors to wild eyed demons. Many of the figures are shown alongside historic woodblock prints featuring the same character. Alan Scott Pate details the symbolism of the costumes, hairstyles, props, and gestures of the dolls. The bits of history and legend that illuminate the story of each doll are told in rich detail. The serious student of Japanese culture will find this book to be a valuable resource. Other readers will be captivated by the color photographs and enjoy an intriguing glimpse into a remarkable culture.

Shinsengumi: The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps, by Romulus Hillsborough

Shinsengumi: The Shogun's last Samurai Corps is the true story of the notorious
samurai corps formed in 1863 to arrest or kill the enemies of the Tokugawa
Shogun. The only book in English about the Shinsengumi, it focuses on the
corps' two charismatic leaders, Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo, both
impeccable swordsmen. It is a history-in-brief of the final years of the
Bakufu, which collapsed in 1867 with the restoration of Imperial rule. In
writing Shinsengumi, Hillsborough referred mostly to
Japanese-language primary sources, including letters, memoirs, journals,
interviews, and eyewitness accounts, as well as definitive biographies and
histories of the era.

The fall of the shogun's government (Tokugawa Bakufu, or simply Bakufu) in
1868, which had ruled Japan for over two and a half centuries, was the greatest
event in modern Japanese history.

The revolution, known as the Meiji Restoration, began with the violent
reaction of samurai to the Bakufu's decision in 1854 to open the theretofore
isolated country to "Western barbarians." Though opening the country was
unavoidable, it was seen as a sign of weakness by the samurai who clamored to
"expel the barbarians."

Those samurai plotted to overthrow the shogun and restore the holy emperor
to his ancient seat of power. Screaming "heaven's revenge," they wielded their
swords with a vengeance upon those loyal to the shogun.

They unleashed a wave of terror at the center of the revolution - the
emperor's capital of Kyoto. Murder and assassination were rampant. By the end
of 1862, hordes of renegade samurai, called ronin,
had transformed the streets of the Imperial Capital into a "sea of blood."

The shogun's administrators were desperate to stop the terror. A band of
expert swordsmen was formed. It was given the name Shinsengumi ("Newly
Selected Corps") - and commissioned to eliminate the ronin and
other enemies of the Bakufu.

With unrestrained brutality bolstered by an official sanction to kill, the
Shinsengumi soon became the shogun's most dreaded security force.

In this vivid historical narrative of the Shinsengumi, the only one in the English language,
author Romulus Hillsborough paints a provocative and thrilling picture of this
most fascinating period in Japanese history.

Review
"So, what do the Hell's Angels and the Shinsengumi have in common? They both had a propensity for violence, a strict internal code of conduct, and an alarmingly excessive reaction to insult, real or perceived. Also, they probably would have slaughtered each other on sight." —Goodreads

From the Author
Shinsengumi: The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps is the only English-language history of the shogun's notorious hit-squad in Kyoto during the final years the shogun's government. It is my most controversial book. I think that much of the controversy is due to the language. I experimented in this book, repeating certain phrases to stress certain characteristics of the Shinsengumi leaders, including their "propensity to kill." Readers either love it or slam it. But I stand behind my original language and would not change a single word.

About the Author
Romulus Hillsborough, originally from Los Angeles, lived in Tokyo for sixteen years, immersing himself in the study of Japanese language, history and culture. Most of his reading focused on major literary and historical works of Japan. He was particularly drawn in by the tumultuous history of the final years of the shogun's government and the return of political power to the Emperor.

To compliment his reading, the author traveled to historical cities and towns around Japan where his samurai subjects lived and died and where the revolution to overthrow the shogun unfolded. During that time he worked as a writer for a popular weekly magazine in Tokyo and later as a contributing journalist to a number of other Japanese publications.

Upon returning to the United States, Hillsborough settled in San Francisco. Since then, he has returned to Japan many times to resume his travels to historical cities and deepen his understanding of his samurai subjects.

Romulus Hillsborough is an acclaimed expert in the field of Japanese history and culture. His books have been published in seven languages. The author has appeared numerous times on television and radio including The History Channel special "The Samurai," first aired in 2003, and an NHK television special about the Shinsengumi in 2004. He has spoken at such internationally recognized venues as the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco, CA), the Pacific Asia Museum (Pasadena, CA), the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (Tokyo) and the Japan Information Center, Consulate General of Japan (San Francisco, CA).

Hillsborough's other books include "Ryoma: Life of a Renaissance Samurai," "Samurai Tales," and the forthcoming "Samurai Revolution: The Dawn of Modern Japan Through the Eyes of the Shogun's Last Samurai." Hillsborough currently lives in San Francisco.

Three Phrases Would Have Done It
By Brian Bear
When I saw this book, (quite by accident, actually), I was impressed that here was a book on something that I had never even heard of before. So, the expectation was high.

Hillsborough has tried to bring out the spirit of the organisation without getting bogged down in the details. Actually, it was the details that I was looking for and often the details will give you something of the spirit of the subject anyway. Some of the historical detail was there, and Hillsborough certainly came across as one who knew his subject material and sources. However, with his book being the first in English on the topic, I question whether the deliberate focus away from the said details was justified. For the average non-Japanese, that historical data would have been priceless, as most of us have nothing else about the Shinsengumi to read.

Three phrases were repeated and repeated ad nauseum: "propensity to kill", "will to power" and "self-importance". The latter had some variations, but all three are constantly hammered and drummed into the reader. At one point, the first phrase appears in almost every sentence for about two paragraphs. While it is certainly worthy to explore the motivations of anyone of historical importance, I again question whether the point needed to be laboured to the degree that it was.

A lot of the historical information regarding important incidents involving the Shinsengumi read a bit like a medieval version of "Battle Royale". At one point, I wondered if I were indeed reading a "historical novel" rather than a book on history. This is something to keep in mind, if you are thinking of purchasing the book.

While the book was interesting, it was certainly not fantastic. It left a huge number of unanswered questions and also left me wondering just why the Shinsengumi was feared so much. From what the book described, there were far more vicious individuals around. That information would have gone a long way to create an understanding of just why the Shinsengumi were so feared and hated.

It is an average book, though with nothing else that I know of in English, there is little choice if someone wants to know about the topic. The Shinsengumi are interesting and worth the look, so for that reason alone the book is worth getting. Just don't expect too much from it, that is all.

Great information; terrible writing
By analog shoujo
If you don't speak Japanese, Mr. Hillsborough's books are pretty much your only source for information on the people and personalities of the Meiji Restoration. (Kenshin, Peacemaker, and Gintama can only get you so far!) If you are interested in Japanese history--or the pop culture surrounding the Shinsengumi et. al.--these books are definitely worth a read. But be warned that the writing is just this side of awful...there is more cliche, hyperbole, and terrible dialogue than you can shake a bokken at.

Kind of scholarly, kind of gossipy
By BRYCE O PLATT
I'm not too sure how to describe this book.

First, let me say that I did enjoy the story. For those only marginally acquainted with he subject, the Shinsengumi were supposed to be a pseudo-police force to protect the Shogun at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. They failed, on many levels. the Shinsengumi have a special place in the hearts and history of the Japanese - the closest parallel I can think of is the Texas Rangers, and even then that is not a good comparison. The Shinsengumi have been portrayed in film and anime (most notably Rurouni Kenshin for anime and, well, Shinsengumi with Toshiro Mifune for film); it's through anime that I became interested in knowing more.

The good parts: There is a lot of information here. This is the scholarly part. Mr. Hillsborough does a good job of telling the story of the Shinsengumi, explaining the historical setting and giving insight into the characters and their motivations. Footnotes and textual explanations while not copious are sufficient.

The bad parts: somehow, even though we are talking only a period of some 6 years the story seems short, almost a sketch. Dry. Bring a bottle of water with you dry. And, one of the most dramatic moments of the Shinsengumi - one of the most dramatic moments in Japanese history, the incident at Ikeda'ya - is pretty unsatisfying. Accurately portrayed I have no doubt but somehow lacking.

For a student of Japanese history and culture, this is a good book and does the job well and I do recommend it for this reader. For the casual reader in Japonica, maybe not so much.
