An outstanding guide to the ancient monuments of Nara City

Its too bad that "Nara: A Cultural Guide to Japan's Ancient Capital" is out of print, as it is one of the best, most informative guides to the ancient monuments of Japan's first Imperial Capital. Other guides are more eye-popping, and more attention grabbing, but few have this level of detail and quality.
This small, compact guide's sole focus is Nara City, and the Shrines and Temples that make up the majority of its wonders. Offering eight tours, the guide is easy to follow and includes maps and major landmarks to help you find your way. It is best used if read in advance, to better appreciate the ancient treasures that you will be seeing, and to give a more thorough understanding of Buddhist culture during the Nara period.
The real limitation of the guide is that it is ONLY Nara city, and leaves out the other important sites of Nara prefecture, such as Muro-ji, O-Miwa-Jinja or Hase-derra. The guide is also only historic, and does not offer food or housing tips, or event guides.
The eight tours are:
1. Along Noborioji - The old road leading from the train station to Nara Park.
2. Todai-ji - The largest wooden structure in the world, housing to the Great Buddha of Nara.
3. Kofuku-ji and Kasuga Grand Shrine - The most important Shinto shrine in Nara.
4. Yakushi-ji, Toshodai-ji and Daian-ji - Competing temples of Todai-ji.
5. Heiji Palace, Hokke-ji, Futai-ji, Kombu-in and Hannya-ji - The old Imperial Palace.
6. Shin Yakusi-ji, Gango-ji, Jurin-ji and Byakugo-ji - More Buddhist temples
7. Saidai-ji, Akishino-derra and Joruri-ji - Home to the Big Tea ceremony
8. Horyu-ji, Chugu-ji and Horin-ji - The oldest wooden structure in the world, and an UNESCO world heritage site.

About the Author
Boye Lafayette De Mente has been involved with Japan, China, and Korea since the late 1940s as a member of a U.S. intelligence agency, student, trade journalist, editor, and author working out of Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He is a graduate of Jochi University in Tokyo and The American Institute for Foreign Trade (now Thunderbird: The School of Global Management). His 70-plus books include Japan's Cultural Code Words, Business Guide to Japan, and Japan Unmasked.

Easy Reading; Straight to the Point

Very good book. I work in a Korean Co. Very usefull points. Great opportunity to know in theory what I faced in practical reality. Lots of things are clearer now...! A very good book for starters in Korean culture interface. Covers from general aspects to details of daily situations. Easy to read. Subjects and capters ordered very well. A must-have-book for those who intend to work in Korea or in Korean Companies abroad. I strongly recommend. AV.

Useful not just for business

Not bad at all. Chapters are broken up into sizeable chunks that are insightful and easy to read. My biggest complaint stems from the fact that despite the author's extensive knowledge of the Korean language, he refrains from using any Hangul in the book - only romanization or transliteration of key terms. This makes for a sloppy glossary.

Don't let this questionable editing mistake steer you away from this book - not only does it contain nugget after nugget of valuable information, it also contains a fantastic summary of ancient and modern Korea wrapped up in about 12 pages.

The author does well to tie in his knowledge of Japanese culture and business as it plays a big role in Korea. However, I would have liked more taboos and "do-not-do-this-you-impatient-foreign-businessperson" tidbits - although the book has plenty. I suppose the best feature of the book is it's instant pick-up-and-read aspect however, if the proper context isn't taken into account, I'm afraid that some of this book might be forgettable - which is a shame.

Perhaps it goes without saying that this book is applicable to anyone living in Korea and has thousands of applications outside the business world. A great read

Great for an Untapped Market

As an individual who works in many different Asian countries, I am always on the lookout for books that help explain business culture in foreign countries to help with my own understanding of living and working in another country. This is exactly what Korean Business Etiquette seeks to accomplish.

The book is broken down to the T about many different facets of Korean business culture, including an essential brief history of Korea's past*. The author does a wonderful job not only identifying important characteristics but also explaining the reasons behind them. Though it is mainly aimed for foreign workers in higher positions, employees working for Korean companies can also find use in the information presented.

On a personal note, I am currently working for a Korean company and had some very large misunderstandings about the management here. Though not completely cleared up, the cultural differences are at least translucent and much more understandable than before.

I truly do feel like the author made a great effort to exhaustively cover every major issue related to working as a foreign manager in Korea.

With these positive aspects, I would like to take a moment to issue a few constructively critical comments:
-*By far the biggest error I have seen is the author's brief history of the Korean war. Unfortunately, he made a grave error in his timeline which appears at the beginning of the book. Due to this serious error, it was difficult for me to take the rest of the book seriously. I would like to advise the author to carefully rewrite the chain of events in the Korean war section.

-One aspect I feel that is missing from this great book is a more personal approach. In one book I have read about working culture in Thailand, the author includes many personal anecdotes related to the topics being covered. With his close AMCHAM connections, I would have liked to have seen brief accounts written by some of these CEOs (who could remain anonymous) related to the topics covered in different sections. These personal accounts could explain their mistake in a situation and more importantly, how they took the authors advice to rectify the situation.

In the end, I definitely recommend this book to anyone living and working in Korea, whether they are a senior level exec. or entry level worker.

Perfect for new students of the Vietnamese language

Of the 4 or 5 dictionaries that I have purchased over the last 2 years, I believe that this one is the best. I like the example phrases that are referenced including local idioms. If you are learning Vietnamese, consider purchasing the Vietnamese-English dictionary by the same author to have a complete to-from translation resource.

It's too bad the dictionary can't pronounce the words for you! For that I have an electronic speaking dictionary and many Vietnamese friends. BTW, I prefer this paper dictionary to the electronic; it's easier to use, easier to read, has more definitions, and doesn't require batteries!

One more minor but agreeable plus - the pages are printed on a satisfyingly stiff paper that makes it easy to turn or flip through when looking up a definition.

A Must Have

A Vietnamese ESL must have dictionary, Great for school use. I order one for my in-laws (just came to the U.S.) I have to order several more. The English words are highlighted in Blue and stand out, a very easy way to look up words, great font, and print. It has an excellent Vietnamese pronunciation description, preface, and how to use section written in English. However, it would have been nice to have an English pronunciation description, preface, and how to use section written in Vietnamese.

My wife is from Vietnam, and I taught in Vietnam for 3 years. We both used different English-Vietnamese/ Vietnamese-English dictionaries there, but we did not bring any to the U.S. I ordered this one for my wife and she says it is the best! John Bohlman

These photographs of the Muslim holy cities Mecca and Medina, taken by a Japanese convert, Ali Kazuyoshi Nomachi, are something new for most Westerners, and perhaps even for many Muslims. Non-Muslims are never allowed into Mecca, and it is almost unheard-of for religious and government leaders to allow such pictures to be taken. Most of these images were shot during the holy month of Ramadan, when many faithful are in Mecca and Medina on pilgrimage.

Dr. Seyyed Hossein Nasr, professor of Islamic studies at George Washington University, has contributed an essay explaining the history and significance of the two cities. "Mecca and its twin city Medina flourish as the heart and sacred Center of the Islamic universe and will continue to do so as long as there are men and women who accept the truth of Lailaha illa'Llah and Muhammadun rasul Allah," he writes.

Nomachi has worked for National Geographic and Life, and his pictures have the information-packed clarity one might expect. There are fascinating images: literally hundreds of thousands of white-robed believers circling the Ka'bah, Mecca's sacred center; men ritually shaving one another's heads; tired families fasting; small children praying. Well worth the read

This book has stunning and beautiful pictures of Islam's holy areas and pictures of Muslims in action. As a non-Muslim, I would never be able to see these things in person. This book gave me a lot of insight into such things, and I definately do not regret the purchase.

A great book for non-Muslims as well!

We get so little information from our media on the largest pilgrimage in the world, that this book is a revelation. Islam and the Hadj are an integral part of the history and culture of the Middle East, and by extension, our world.
The photography is nothing short of stunning, and there is little that is not covered, so that one gets a good sense of the topography, the rites, and of course, the pilgrims.
An essential book not only for Muslims, but perhaps even more for non-Muslims looking to understand one of the world's great faiths.
I will never, as a non-Muslim, be able to visit the holy cities, but this book was the next best thing. Flawless.

A view into the holy places of Islam

This is a beautiful photographic essay on the experience of the Hajj. It includes photos of Mecca and the Kaaba, the physical locus of prayer for Muslims around the world. It also includes photos of the City of Medina, the site of the tomb of the Prophet, Muhammad upon him be peace.
An introductory essay gives a brief description of the historical expansion of the buildings around the Kaaba and the Holy Tomb. Colorful views of the rituals of the pilgrimage provide Westerners with an insight into this essential ritual of Islam. I especially appreciate the photos of Muslims from around the world as they gather together in pilgrimage.
It is a book I have chosen to share with friends and family to increase their understanding of Islam.

Elementary Korean is the best

After studying Korean (on my own using internet sources etc etc) I have decided that this book is definitely by far one of the best books you can get for Korean. It contains an incredible amount of information. Most courses are quite small for Korean and do not contain a great deal, or are hard to manage. I have looked at the Rosetta Stone series for Korean (costing $300) and this $50 book is by far better than that whole program. It is better than any books I have seen in book stores. I have done the Pimsleur course which is a little strange in my opinion. Pimsleur does help with pronunciation a little bit but some of the language structure is a bit weird and not natural for the Korean Language. I feel that ever since I bought this book a couple weeks ago (I am on lesson 6 out of 15 I believe) I am learning at a much faster pace than I ever was before.

1) The grammar in this is excellent. It contains many many grammar points for every chapter and introduces them in a nice order (meaning you get important stuff first unlike some other courses I have looked at where you have to wait till near the end of the course to really dig into some good grammar).
2) The vocabulary consists of a surplus of words that anyone could ever want to learn as they are starting Korean.

I admit, this course is really hard and does contain a lot of information right from the start and might be hard on someone who does not know anything about Korean, but if you have already begun looking into the Korean Language, I highly recommend this. I do not know how good of a job it does teaching Hangul as I already knew most Hangul when beginning this book, but I do know it covered some points and specific irregulars and pronunciation rules that I had not previously known so it probably is very good at Hangul as well. Others have said to do the 2 Hangul chapters first, which might be a good idea to someone who does not know it. It should be a pretty good book for teaching Hangul but I am not entirely sure if it teaches well and easy to understand for someone who does not know Hangul, but it seems to do a good job. The first two chapters on just basic sentences and sayings people should know were alright in my opinion. Chapter 1 is good because it deals with just simple things like yes, no, nice to meet you, thank you, etc...But honestly, the romanization confuses me very very much so I would learn Hangul first (it has both romanization and Hangul in the chapters 1 and 2 because they do not introduce Hangul until chapter 3). The romanization has a chart for how to pronounce all the strange letters they use for romanization and all, and I honestly think Hangul would be much easier to learn than learning romanization used in these two chapters. But if you know the Hangul (which is covered in the book) then chapter 1 is very good. Chapter 2 covers basic information on what a teacher might say in the classroom or the students, which didn't do much for me as I am learning completely on my own. 3 and 4 is Hangul. Chapter 5 is where this book finally really kicks in. Starting with Chapter 5 you have all your lists of vocabulary, your dialogues, and many explanations on grammar. Chapter 5 is where it gets intense.

People have mentioned the audio cd is not very good. I disagree. I think it is excellent. Even though it is just one 74 minute cd (seemed like it wouldn't last very long) it has most anything on the cd you would want being pronounced. It does not give you time to repeat after them or does not say words twice, but it fits a lot of words and spoken Korean on the one cd. You can listen to it and figure out how the word should be said. The woman speaker speaks at a nice pace, while the male speaker is a little faster but still a nice pace in my opinion. Listening to the male speaker helps build your listening comprehension because when speaking with a real Korean it will be just as hard if not harder to understand. The cd is excellent in my opinion.

Lastly, I want to mention the exercises. There are exercises at the ends of the chapters (mainly beginning with Chapter 5 when the real lessons begin) which I highly recommend you doing. Luckily I am highly interested in the Korean language and find it very fun to learn so I can make myself do them. Some may seem a bit dull or long or pointless at first but I know that's not the case. When it says figure out what this is in Korean and write out the WHOLE sentence for each one, I highly recommend doing that. It will greatly help, even if it is a lot of work. It has all the answers (or answers that work - for example if it says translate this sentence into Korean, it will give a correct translation, when there are a couple different ways to translate it. That is the only problem I have found so far. Sometimes its hard to check your answers if your working on your own and they only give one possible solution...but, they do cover an answer for every exercise in the book.).

Overall, I like everything about this book. It covers everything very well.

+ The vocabulary is a lot but not completely overwhelming. The authors try to group closely related words physically close together to reduce the cost of learning new vocabulary.
+ Better than Myondo in presentation of material. Instead of spreading out related grammar material, it tries to present them together.
+ What I think is really great are the pronunciation rules ... you won't find this kind of practicality and detail in most other text. (Now, Myondo is very detailed but describing ssang-chiut as a voiceless alveo-palatal glottalized affricative isn't particularly helpful to me).
+ No Chinese characters are used in this book which is a plus at this level since Chinese characters rarely appear in the main text of popular Korean newspapers anyway
+ The authors actually provide a decent number of exercises with ANSWERS in the back! Now what they need to publish next is a supplementary reading and exercise book.

- I concur with a previous reviewer that the CD does not have enough basic sound examples.

Wonderful, but difficult book

As others have said, this book is difficult, but wonderful. It will not hold your hand, and you have to be dedicated to learning the language. Personally, I enjoy that its raw learning without all the fluffy stuff (corny graphics, etc). I love that it is all in Hangul without Romanizations (there are only Romanizations in chapters 1-3). I have used other texts that have full Romanizations and many times they end up hurting you in the end because they are wrong, inconsistant, and you become dependant on them. There is also a good Korean-English/English-Korean glossary in the back in Hangul-alphabetical order (most are not), so you don't really need a dictionary yet, but of course one wouldn't hurt (warning: the dictionary with the big L on the cover is good, but in Romanized-alphabetical order which can be a pain for looking up Hangul words). Here are some things that will help you though:
-Yes, the CD is super fast, but that is the normal speaking speed in Korea. What I did to make it easier to hear was to play the CD in Windows Media Player and use the "Play Speed" function to slow down the CD. It really helped!
-Have a very basic understanding of some linguistics terms such as voiced, unvoiced, unreleased, aspirated. The authors are trained linguistics and sometimes use some jargon, although it is usually explained.
-I highly recommend learning Hangul (the Korean alphabet) before starting this book. The authors do not introduce it (but still use it) until chapter 3, which is very difficult if you do not have a Korean teacher.
-That brings my last point. If you know a native Korean, make sure you use him/her as a resource. That probably goes without saying for any book. However, I have been learning Korean about 90% on my own, and have used this book as my guide fairly successfully (no fault of the book; it is just a HARD language to grasp).

About the Author
Stephen F. Kaufman, Hanshi, 10th Dan, is the holder of the highest title and rank attainable in the martial arts. His martial system, Hebi-ryu ("School of the Snake"), is recognized as one of the most effective martial methods in the world. A career spanning close to 60 years began in Okinawa in the 1950's. He's acknowledged as the "founding father" of American karate and has received countless awards and honors, including an induction into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame as Author of the Year in 2011.

Kaufman has authored and interpreted many martial arts titles including Musashi's Book of Five Rings, The Way of the Modern Warrior, and The Shogun's Scroll, all available from Tuttle Publishing.

It's an interpretation, not a translation.

Like the title of the book says, it's an interpretation, which is simply a summary of someone's understanding of the book, not the book itself. If you've read a decent translation of the Art of War, this might be worth looking into in order to get someone else's opinion on such an old text, but if you haven't, get a translation first. This will only confuse you otherwise.

The reason I changed my rating to two stars is because I think that Stephen should make a point in the beginning on the difference between an interpretation and a translation, so people really know what they're getting.

If you are looking to get your hands on a translation of the Art of War, go for Lionel Giles translation. The two things that really make it great are the fact that it contains two sections(one with and one without commentary), and the translations themselves seem to be very well preserved.

A martial artist view of the art of war

I have read a translation of the art of war in the past by another author and found this version relatively easy to read. It is an interpretation written by a martial artist with over 60 years experience . It is basically a book discussing war strategy and may only interest those with those interest in mind. I found it easy to read and follow. I think most of us, involved with martial arts, will read atleast one of the many interpretations of " Sun Tzu 's Art of War " at some point in our journey. This version would be a good one to read ( since it is written by a martial artist) than many of the others.

Being familiar with Kaufman's presentation of the Book of five Rings available from the same publisher this version of Sun Tzu is a good English language translation. Keep in mind that Kaufman offers these works from a decidedly modern perspective and in an extremely pragmatic fashion. Devoid of footnotes and references save for the brief prefaces Mr. Kaufman provides them as serious study guides nonetheless. Highly recommended Reading for strategy enthusiasts.
