About the Author
Architect Takashi Sugimoto, born in Tokyo in 1945, studied metal sculpture before graduating from the Crafts Course of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music in 1968. He founded Super Potato in 1973 and became a professor at the Musashino University of Fine Arts in 1992. He received the Mainichi Design Award in 1985 and 1986, as well as the Interior Design Association Award in 1992.

Mira Locher was born in Pennsylvania and has a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She is an Assistant Professor at the College of Architecture & Planning at the University of Utah.

Material Heaven

I got this purely based upon the caption that he was Japan's best interior designer. I think for material usage in traditional design sense he is, and this book shows it. Althought it doesnt cover his most interesting interiors( at the back there is a list of his complete works and some seem neglected not to be included in the main part). Restaurants are his main station and in the book it it shows a willingness to experiment and push the boundries as to what or bar, partition or ceiling can be made from. It contains text explaining materiality, overall space photos, detail photos and floor plans. His interiors are a good representation of how modern japanese interiors have developed from the traditonal approach. I would recommend this book to fans of japanese design, desingers looking to use manmade / natural / recycled materials and desingers trying to get their brains past the its all plasterboard dilema

The art of natural materials in interior design

I purchased this book, not knowing that I had already experienced first-hand the work of Takashi Sugimoto (founder and principal of Super Potato Design). While visiting Seoul, Korea, I stayed at the Park Hyatt and was very inspired by the interior design. The choice of large stones in their rough state juxtaposed to the delicate wood louvres were elements I haven't seen at that time. I knew the design was Asian inspired in the way that natural materials were incorporated to create an interior that blurred the boundaries of outside/inside, but I had no idea it was by a renowned designer from Japan.
Takashi Sugimoto's usage of raw natural materials in his interior makes us rethink what is acceptable in terms of interior scale and form. Furthermore, it shows that when a material such as stone is exaggerated and placed into an interior space, the size of the material takes center stage over form.
This monograph provides an insight into this phenomenal designer's ouvre from the early 70's to the present.

Phenomenal Book

Super Potato design work is amazing, exquisitely beautiful, intensely original and quintessentially Japanese without being typically traditional. One revelatory environment after another, everything perfectly crafted down to the smallest detail. Top photography, excellent text and unusually incisive captions here are icing on the cake. If you visit Japan, it's a great resource. The restaurants are as gorgeous in life as they are in the book, although a number are long-closed (the earliest project is the Radio Bar of 1971). You will never look at high-end restaurant design the same way again. A book I page through often and one I've given as a gift several times.

The problem with this dictionary is that it's a digitized book, not an e-book. For books you plan to read sequentially page 1-NNN that's fine but for a dictionary there needs to be a lot more sophisticated navigation. This book is one better bought in print.

About the Author
Boye Lafayette De Mente has been involved with Japan, China, and Korea since the late 1940s as a member of a U.S. intelligence agency, student, trade journalist, editor, and author working out of Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He is a graduate of Jochi University in Tokyo and The American Institute for Foreign Trade (now Thunderbird: The School of Global Management). His 70-plus books include Japan's Cultural Code Words, Business Guide to Japan, and Japan Unmasked.

Would Rather Have Borrowed The Book From A Library

There are a number of reasons why I didn't enjoy reading this book. First, many many many Korean words are spelled incorrectly, and it really does detract from the credibility of the author as an authority in this area. At least get the spellings right. Supposedly, going by the book's acknowledgments section, a number of people have had a chance to review the book for editing, yet, many of the most simple words are spelled in shall we say an unorthodox way. Second, the topics could have been covered in a systematic way. Talk about all things legal in one part, all things family in another part, and so on. There is no rhythm or rhyme to how this book organizes the topics, which is annoying. Third, the book is overly general and therefore some of its statements about the "unique character and personality" of Koreans seem unfounded and, quite frankly, bigoted. It is over 450 pages but due to how the topics are organized, many of the written material is needlessly repetitive. Some interesting history is mentioned, but this book could have been much better on a number of fronts.

Informative but repetetive and with atrocious Korean spelling

I found this book fairly informative, ideally to be read one entry at a time every once in a while perhaps. It is way to repetitive and unstructured overall to be consumed in one go. In order to get an idea about some key Korean cultural concepts this is better than reading many of the convoluted academic works. As someone with a Korean studies background, the wrong spelling of even the simplest Korean words and phrases frustrated and disappointed me a lot. As other reviewers have remarked, this clearly undermines the author's (and contributors') credibility unnecessarily. If you can't write simple Korean can you actually read/speak Korean? And if not, how do you expect to understand Korea - and particularly the Korean Mind?

Interesting info, but many mistakes

The cultural information contained in the book is interesting, but the organization was unproductive and the mistakes in the Korean spellings were distracting.

The book is organized by keywords of Korean culture. The keywords are arranged in alphabetical order according to the romanization of the Korean word. If you are approaching the book as a complete beginner to Korean and/or Korean culture this is unhelpful. It is impossible to know where to look. Although my Kindle version does have a section that assigns each entry into certain categories, it would be much easier if the book was just arranged into those categories to begin with. (I don't know if the print version has that section.)

If you speak some Korean and have a specific keyword you would like to look up... well, you're still in trouble. The author never indicates which romanization system (of many varying systems) he is using (and I feel like it was inconsistant anyway), and many of the words were written incorrectly in Korean letters, so the romanization is similarly problematic. (Of course if you recognize this there are limited possible spellings so you would probably get where you wanted to eventually...)

Ultimately, while I think he does make a lot of interesting observations, as with other reviewers I am left wondering just how much I can trust the content given the blatancy of the mistakes. I also think it reads better as a reference book than as a cohesive narrative. (I also agree with one of the other reviewers that a book on the Korean Mind that doesn't address "jeong" is missing one of the more important cultural keywords... or maybe it was there and I just couldn't find it...)

Like looking through a family photo album

What an intimate look at the man behind the image! The book is highly visual--the text is very limited--but the photos are like none that I've ever seen in other books on Lee. I'm talking about the baby pictures of Bruce and Brandon, photos of Lee from behind the scenes in his movies (a kind of spooky one of him and Sharon Tate from what must have been just before she was killed), and pictures of he and his wife just sitting on the couch at home. It makes you realize that there's a man and father behind the superhero that appears in his films. I loved it.

The Way of the Intercepting Fist

Many of the documentaries and biographies out there about Bruce Lee were unauthorized and created by shysters trying to cash in on his sudden death. This book, based on the recent video documentary "Bruce Lee: In His Own Words" is not only superior because it really is based on the master's own words, but the book and video are also endorsed by Bruce's widow and daughter. Here we get plenty of great photographs from Bruce's films, training, and family life. Meanwhile, Bruce's thoughts on acting, family, and his martial arts style (or, according to him, its dismissal of style) are true revelations for any fan of Bruce's classic movies. His thoughts on being a serious actor, rather than a martial arts "superstar," are quite a surprise; while his personal philosophy and attitudes toward martial arts mastery are both fascinatingly Eastern but surprisingly down-to-Earth and accessible for Western enthusiasts. So instead of fighting your way through all the frauds and fakes out there, get it from the master himself. [~doomsdayer520~]

Informative. Great Pictures. A Great Addition.

This book is a great addition to my collection of Bruce Lee books of pictures, filmography, philosopy and techniques. It has one of the best picture collections of all the books I've seen. The content isn't bad either. Talking about the life of the Little Dragon and some of the deep thoughts he had in his short life in this world. My fan-ography of the Jeet Kune Do Sifu is just starting, even if I have been a follower for years. This book is not a dissapointment. It will be a great addition to any collection.

Twenty-four years after reading this book, its spirit still remains in me. I first read Tales of a Chinese Grandmother while in the third grade. Although I was raised in a traditional Chinese household, this book explained, with charm, the traditions and origins Chinese folklore.

This is not a college compendeum of every tradition, rather it is an endearing look at Chinese culture as explained by a grandmother to two young children as they grow up in old China.

Great photos but very little Sakuteiki

This is a better than average coffee-table book about Japanese Gardens. The photos are for the most part excellent (a few are too dark). Many of the gardens shown are located outside of the Kyoto area and have seldom if ever been shown in other such (English language) books on this subject; this is a nice touch because it means that there is little overlap between this book and others. I had high hopes that the book would include a substantial (if not complete) translation of the Sakuteiki but despite the introduction which implies that this might be the case, it is not true. I would guess that less than 25% of the text of Sakuteiki is included, and the authors have rearranged the material into thematic sections to fit their own taste. This is a terrible pity becuase the 11th century gardening manual known by the name "Sakuteiki" is a very important point of reference in understanding the historical developement of Japanese gardens - sections from it are quoted by almost every book written on the subject, yet there is no generally available English translation of it. The 1976 translation by Shigemaru Shimoyama (publ. by Town & City Planners,Inc. Tokyo) was printed in a tiny edition of only 300 copies so the only way to read it is by borrowing a copy thru the academic inter-library loan program at your local public library. The way the authors of this book have rearranged the text into disjointed quotations (with widely varying typographic style & presentation) really does not do justice to the orginal material and is in considerable danger of reinforcing the old western stereotype of "pearls of wisdom from the inscrutable orient". I would suggest that you buy this book for the pictures alone and not pay too much attention to the text as currently presented. If the book is popular enough to merit a 2nd edition I hope the authors will reconsider the current format.

Very Inspiring

Infinite Spaces is lean on the commentary and abundant in beautiful full color photos displaying a wide variety of magnificent Japanese gardens. Some are from temples and others from private properties. This is not a repetitive book that displays the same Kyoto gardens like many that have been published.

While some are from Kyoto, Eric Miller's review suggests most of the gardens are located around Kyoto. This is not accurate at all. In fact, what's so incredible about this book is the authors traveled virtually the whole country and shot incredible gardens the whole length of Japan. Gardens are documented from the following regions: Nara, Shiga, Tottori, Ehime, Yamaguchi, Nagano, Nagoya, Tokushima, Yamagata, Tokyo, Ishikawa, Shizuoka, Fukuoka, Mie, Kumamoto, Wakayama, Iwate, Aomori, Yamanashi, Fukui, Niigata, Aichi, Kanagawa, and Gifu.

Awesome! Tons of great inspiration here. I highly recommend it.

Incredible photography!

The photos are so luscious--I can't think of a more appropriate term--that it's as if you're in these gardens. I believe all of the photos are of the ancient gardens in Kyoto, and if not, they're definately all from Japan. This book is truly one that was inspired by the Sakuteki, not an illustrated edition of the Sakuteki. You'll want it for dreamy page turning, not as an instruction book for your own gardens.

There are so few trustworthy English-language books on the Filipino martial arts that the publication of a new one is a landmark. And when such a competent and respected practitioner as Mark V. Wiley produces it, then the occasion is one to be savoured.There have been many technical manuals on eskrima, arnis, and kali, and the library shelves are well stocked with them. Even so, there has always been a need for well-researched scholarly material relating to the history and culture of the Filipino arts. Unfortunately, such works are rare--as incidentally, are the people capable of writing them. Mark V. Wiley is an exception and this book has surpassed all my expectations. I've no doubt it will become the standard reference on the martial arts of the Philippines.The book is comprehensive and covers the history of turbulence and war in the Philippines from pre-historic times to the present day. It also examines the culture from which arises Filipino martial arts, the spirituality, folklore, and weaponry, plus biographical sketches of 18 Filipino masters, and descriptions of their respective fighting styles, and a comparative study of the ethos, ideology, and development of the Filipino martial arts in relation to the traditions of India, China, and Japan.Wiley also addresses the many misconceptions which surround the Filipino martial arts, informing us firstly that the terms kali, eskrima, and arnis are not synonimous and do not represent the same art. Kali did not exist during the pre-Spanish times. Then he tells us that not all Filipino arts are based on weapons training--in fact, there are quite a few strictly empty-hand arts.These statements are based on solid historical research. I recommend this book to serious martial artists, whilst for all practitioners of the Filipino martial arts, it is an absolute must!

A good addition to your FMA library

While I wish this book had the same relentless scholarly execution as Don Draeger's work (and I can think of very few even comparable for any art) on Indonesian arts, this becomes an even more difficult book to review because this is in reality more than one book: it is a book on Wiley's theories of the development of Filipino Martial Culture and a book which documents the oral history of FMA masters he has met in the Philippines and America (which I presume helped shape his conclusions).
"Filipino Martial Culture" works for me because it represents an effort to document the efforts of some well-known, some less-known, but no less significant figures in the Filipino Martial Arts community. Most students of eskrima, kali, arnis, etc. (like myself) are starved for information on the masters of the FMA. I suppose that is why I appreciate this book, because it makes the effort.
While this book may be controversial for its conclusions, biases, etc. and its emphasis on some masters over others, it does attempt to tell the story of the FMA through the voices of the people themselves. It is definitely not the final word and anybody interested in exploring should seek out books by Cabiero, Canete, Draeger, Imada, Inosanto, Presas, Sulite, and others to supplement their research in Southeast Asian fighting arts.

This is a great book

You know 'em when you see 'em...shelves upon shelves of how-to martial arts titles at your local book superstore -- all presented by humorless thugs posing in grainy black-and white photos. Like a well-rounded Alsatian farmer's wife, they grab you by the neck and begin stuffing junk down your throat until you put the book down, none the wiser, but with the feeling that your liver justgot a step closer to becoming kung fu foie gras...
There are exceptions, of course. But few martial arts authors have the cultural awareness and sensitivity to put their art into a larger picture, one that transcends the stances, blocks, and hits -- positions it as part of a living, three-dimensional cultural phenomenon.
One writer who was able to live up to the task was the late Donn Draeger. Of course, any Westerner who attempts to create a competent comprehensive appreciation of an Oriental martial culture not only requires the appropriate amount of expertise in the subject matter he chooses. He also has to have guts to face the "my-kung-fu-is-better-than-your-kung-fu" and "my-facts-are better-than-your facts" pundits (mostly Westerners, too) who know everything better in the first place, and then believe their particular sub-system was not represented to their liking. (Or that their edition of Baedeker's Manila represents a better reference than the research of original data in sources and translations of the respective author...)
Mark Wiley has guts -- and the discipline, humility, perseverance and expertise to create a trail-blazing work on the ins and outs of Filipino Martial Culture. Rivaling, and often even surpassing Donn Draeger in scope, his book is probably the most important martial arts title to hit the stores this decade.
Wiley's approach combines solid historical research skill (uniting archeological and folkloristic sources) with deeply personal knowledge of the culture (and cultures) he is writing about. By adding an anthropological element into his analysis, he manages to put his work into a globally human perspective -- as important to a practitioner of a Filipino martial art as to any other culture.
Himself an accomplished practitioner of arnis and eskrima, the Filipino stick fighting art, he could have chosen a less holistic approach and still written an excellent book. But there's little of Mark Wiley in this book, reflecting his respect of all other styles and schools (most of which are represented in generous chapters) as well as the self-effacing humility you would expect from a master.
Even if you're not particularly interested in Filipino stick fighting, this is one of the most worth-while additions to your fighting library you're going to make for the rest of this millennium.
