Collection of Academic Filipino Martial Arts Articles...

Be advised there are no pictures in this book, it is an academic undertaking. If you are looking for something with visual historical material in it, try the two books authored by Mark Wiley: "Filipino Martial Culture" and "Filipino Fighting Arts: Theory and Practice".
The placment of Mark Wiley's name on the front cover suggests he is the AUTHOR, where he is in fact, the EDITOR of this collection of articles (he is also a contributor). Not Wiley's fault--he credits the collective group in the introduction. Small point that only matters to us fans of footnotes, I know...now, on to assessing this collection of articles!
In Part 1, writers offer perspectives on the origins of the Filipino arts, including five articles such as "A Question of origins", by Felipe Jocano, Jr., and "Questioning the Origins of Escrima", by Dr. Ned Nepangue, etc.. Part 2 focuses on Historical Perspectives with five offerings like "A History of Eskrima in Cebu and Negros", by Krishna Godhania. Part 3, Cultural Perspectives, includes eight articles by different contributors, including "Passion from the Crescent Moon" by Marilitz Dizon, and "The Making of the Batangas (Balisong) Knife" by Dr. Jopet Laraya. Part 4, Facing The Future, includes three articles including Combative vs. Competitive Escrima by Krishna Godhania, and "The Implimentation of Arnis in the Physical Education programs of Tertiary Schools in Cebu City" by Abner G. Pasa.
Overall, this is a good collection of topics of a calibre more advanced than most newsstand martial arts magazines could tolerate. The tone is clearly academic in nature, although less than half of the article include notes of some sort at their conclusion. Wiley does include a well-rounded list of source materials for further reading. If you are tired of how-to manuals, here is a book which will present new information, even for those of us who have pretty well "been around the block" when it comes to learning about other cultures and practice. The variety of perspectives are insightful.

Well worth a read for FMA practioners.

Be aware, the "editiorial comments" above do not accurately reflect the content of this book; I suspect they are based on another of Mark Wiley's books.
There are no pictures in this book.
This book is actually a collection of articles about various aspects of the history and development of FMA. Some of them are new and some have been taken from the pages of Rapid Journal (published in the Phillipines). Some of the articles are written by well known people on the FMA such as: Tony Somers, Krishna Godhania and Mark Wiley, other names are new to me.
As the title suggests, the articles are about the history of the arts, not the technical side and as such this volume fills a gap in the reading of most practioners.
On the down side, some of the articles are very thin; it hardly seems worth while to have bothered with the item on the history of FMA in Europe.(This is a real contrast to some of the others).
I enjoyed the book, but was left wanting more.

this book breaks down the many terms and training methods as well as providing historical incidents and figures whom were shaped amid conflict and revolution.it also gives the reader a glimse of the spiritual aspects of the various anting-anting and oracion of the warriors who used them.

Memories of Bali forever.

On a cruise to Bali this book was in the ship's library and I feel in love with it. As soon as I got home I ordered it on AMAZON. I now have an wonderful book of memories of my time in this paradise. The photos are so good you can almost hear the Balinese music and smell the incense in the temples and markets.

About the Author
Boye Lafayette De Mente has been involved with Japan, China, and Korea since the late 1940s as a member of a U.S. intelligence agency, student, trade journalist, editor, and author working out of Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He is a graduate of Jochi University in Tokyo and The American Institute for Foreign Trade (now Thunderbird: The School of Global Management). His 70-plus books include Japan's Cultural Code Words, Business Guide to Japan, and Japan Unmasked.

A critical but insightful book with some caveats.

This interesting little book manages to pack insightful observations about the history and permutations of traditional Japanese "kata," or form in 168 pages. The easiest way to understand kata is that it's the Japanese people's idea of the "correct" way of doing something, which in Western equivalent, is etiquette. The Japanese, having derived its culture from a military heritage, infuses "form" into every aspect of their lives: everything from the correct form of humility, to bowing, exchanging name cards, ambiguity in giving answers, making an apology, dealing with foreigners, traveling in groups, and running an office. While this book seems to be geared more towards businessmen and women attempting or considering doing business with the Japanese, it also briefly looks at the cult of cuteness, infantilism, copying, and the Japanese approach to baseball. There's even a quick observation of the importance of role-playing (which some of us may know as cos-play) and that those we now see at the Hajaruku district, while appearing outlandish, will return to their staid office clothing come Monday morning.

I read in other Amazon reviews that De Mente exhibits a certain ethnocentric arrogance in his look at Japanese culture (the author worked in Japan as a member of the U.S. Military Intelligence Agency in 1949), so I paid additional attention for that monster to rear its ugly head. But I found that that's precisely where the strength of some of De Mente's observations lie. No one ever learns anything when everyone is at their best behavior. The protection of etiquette is that it veils what we really want to say. Unfortunately, the quoted praises in the bookcover are from people in similar positions, meaning non-Japanese. I'd be interested to hear what the ethnic Japanese practicing Kata really think about De Mente's observations, because an analysis of behavior is sometimes akin to conspiracy theories: easy to point out, difficult to disprove. You have a list of evidence and that list traps you into what you "see" in order to support of your evidence.

De Mente states at one point that the Japanese are eager to promote their kata mentality and "continue to emphasize its strong points as the ultimate social formula which the rest of the world should adopt." I tend to think this is not accurate, as all the Japanese I have come across are insular, keep to themselves, and have no interest in proselytizing their "way" to outsiders. De Mente continually brings up the notion that the Japanese use language, kata, and Japanese-ness as barriers to outsiders (foreigners) from penetrating their culture. That, to me, doesn't seem as if the Japanese are all that interested in getting the world to adopt their social formula at all. By contrast, when comparing the Japanese to progressive Western culture, De Mente observes that "their society is ruled by form and formulas and in a sense, in many areas, is empty of the individual human content that makes up a much more complete and satisfying emotional and spiritual life." It seems instead, the writer feels that Western culture is the ultimate social formula that the Japanese should adopt.

There's also mention of how the Japanese tend to be unfair ("in the Western sense") and consider anyone who they have not developed good working relationships with to be "fair game." But then he advises that to get the upper hand - when dealing with the Japanese - one should draw them away from their base, use English as a barrier when one wants to be demanding and get things accomplished, and exploit the tendency of the Japanese to treat any transactions made in a language other than their own as an event that exists in the "other" realm from their reality.

The author often portrays the Japanese as tit-for-tat businessmen who trade favors, lunches, and parties for business deals. He talks about "Machiavellian political intrigue" where office workers block and sabotage each other's projects for personal promotion. The truth is, this has nothing to do with Japanese kata. It's capitalism at it's best, as a global Western culture is quickly replacing anachronistic societies. Working at many different offices in New York City and New Jersey , I have seen these same white collar dramas play out time and again, without a single Japanese person in sight.

I don't want to give the impression that this is a negative book about the Japanese. It does laud many of the great qualities of a disappearing culture. After all, this is the very same author who wrote "Why the Japanese Are a Superior People!" I love the spot-on sections on the Japanese being "modernized, but not Westernized," the superficial acquisition of Western "product" as identity, and silence utilized as a weapon to expose the Americans, who fear pauses and combat that fear by talking non-stop. That had me rolling on the floor.

Fascinating, insightful book!

This is one of the only books on Japanese culture that was written in such a fashion that I couldn't put it down. It covered a variety of topics I hadn't even thought to ask, and didn't address things like "Japanese people bow because it's polite", but "Japanese people bow because it's polite, this is why it's polite, it relates to their early culture because of this, and here are some examples of conditioning as it relates to the bow, etc etc". It's very well written, very interesting, and eye-opening to the westerner. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a genuine interest in Japanese culture that goes beyond anime, and would DEFINITELY recommend it to those pursuing Japanese and Asian studies in college.

One step closer to understanding.

Lafayette's revealing book is a survival manual for those who might feel lost at the unfathomable task of understanding the Japanese culture. The book focuses on the obstacles encountered in everyday life and business affairs, by almost every culture in the World when dealing with the japanese. It explains with first-hand experience how the culture has been changed and influenced by the Kata applied to every task from the art of Chado (or tea ceremony) to the miniturization of electronics, thus making the japanese such a unique culture. This book is a delight to read because of its objetivity and sociological insight. It is not a travel guide, it is a great work of cultural and sociological study.

Kristy is the founder and managing director of Far Flung Craft, a company that specializes in Asian-inspired papers and embellishments for scrapbookers and paper crafters. She lives in Singapore with her husband and children.

About the Author
Gershon Ben Keren has been training in Krav Maga since 1994 in both Israel and Europe. He holds a 5th Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga in Israel, where he also received his teaching certification. He has been trained by some of the IDF's (Israeli Defense Forces) most experienced and respected Krav Maga instructors. In December 2011, he was inducted into the "Museum of Israeli Martial Arts" at the Israeli Martial Arts Center in Herzilya. He has taught Krav Maga to civilians, security personnel, law enforcement agencies, and to members of elite military units and Special Forces. He also holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Judo and has won regional and national titles in Judo tournaments.

He has a Master's Degree in Psychology, with particular reference to violence and aggressive behavior, and incorporates this knowledge into the reality based self-defense training that he provides. He lives and teaches Krav Maga in Boston, running Krav Maga Yashir Boston.

Refreshing Approach. Amazing Photography.

There are so many books out there on martial arts and/or self-defense, and I've grown weary of a lot of it; this one, however, is a refreshingly thoughtful and straightforward take on the realities of dealing with violence. The author is clearly an authority on the subject matter, as he is able to break down physical techniques and general personal safety concepts to crucial details, while keeping it very easy to follow. To be more specific, though, there are 2 main features of this book that separate it from the rest in my opinion:

1. LAYOUT - The book is very descriptive and easy to understand. The color photo demonstrations are crystal clear and of insanely high-quality. If you're used to one or two black-and-white photos to accompany text, you're going to be pleased with the number of superbly photographed pictures in this book.

2. CONCEPT - Of all that I've seen, this book is the most effective at demonstrating combative techniques, but there will always be a limit to the physical content one can actually learn from reading a book. My favorite thing about this book is its emphasis on personal safety concepts and principles that completely transcend any specific technique one might use in self-defense. This is the most "real" take on violence that I've ever read (i.e. It includes psychological factors, physiological factors, and environmental factors), and the idea that the physical aspect is just one component of a much bigger picture of personal protection is the most valuable thing that someone can take from reading a book on this subject.

If you are looking to actually learn something of value, I highly recommend this!

Phenomenal!

Gershon Ben Keren has filled a hole that the martial arts genre of literature has been suffering from for some time. The subtitle speaks true, this book is very much a real world approach to dealing with the most common and likely forms of violence. I'm amazed at the level of instruction and the sheer volume of information the author was able to fit into one volume. Anyone interested in Krav Maga or simply looking for efficient methods of self defense could not ask for a better book!

Great book. Very easy to follow. The amount of pictures in the book that coincide with the information help you better understand what is being taught. This is an excellent book for military personnel , law enforcement officers, everyday civilians and anyone that is interested in training in Krav Maga
