Osho in a capsule

OSHO is an experience to be relived by reading his writings and listening to his discourses. The Everyday Meditator is produced with extracts from his works. It is.... well...., a capsule.
You can eat a capsule of vitamins, well packaged, effective and will produce the results. But what you will miss is the totality of the experience.
So, if you intend to start with this book as a beginning to change the way you think and look at the world around you, go ahead and read it. But do not stop there. Go ahead and read more of OSHO's works.

Probably the only book you will need for meditation.

I recently got an interest in meditation and with that I purchased several books, including this one. Honestly, the only book that worked for me is this one here. In this book, Osho explains the different types of meditation in a way that makes sense to the newcomers.

Perhaps the way in which Osho arranges the types of meditation from morning to evening is what most people like about this book and the fact that it allows you to choose the meditation depending on your goal or stress level.

Example: if you have a lot of stress then the best meditation would be an active type such as kundalini meditation.

If you are looking into meditation and want a starting point then this book is for you even if you just want to get an insight of what meditation is about.

The best book on meditaion I have found

Osho is a great writer and there are plenty of pictures and stories on every page. I'd lost this book before and just got around to repurchasing it.
There are morning meditations, 12 of them, afternoon meditations, 12 of them, evening meditations, 16 to choose from active meditations, 12 of them, on vacation meditations, 13 of them, meditations in a part of the game chapter, with things like breathing, music, cleansing, sound.
I own quite a few meditation books and this one is my absolute favorite. Its worth it for the pictures alone! Lovely

Though Lafcadio Hearn went on to write a dozen more books on Japan, this collection of first impressions remains his most popular. Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan combines two volumes of a work that first appeared in 1894. In the pages of this book are the customs, the superstitions, the charming scenery, the revelations of Japanese character, and all the other elements that Lafcadio Hearn found so bewitching. Here, for example, are essays on such subjects as the Japanese garden, the household shrine, the festivals, and the bewildering Japanese smile—all aspects of Japanese life that have endured in spite of the changes that have taken place during the modernization of Japan. The Japanese character and the Japanese tradition are still fundamentally the same as Hearn found them to be, and for this reason his writing is still extremely revealing to modern readers.

This edition also contains a new foreword by noted writer and examiner of Japanese culture Donnie Richie that puts Lafcadio Hearn and his classic works into perspective for readers just discovering Hearn's writing for the first time.

About the Author
Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was born on the Greek island of Lefkas, the son of an Anglo-Irish surgeon in the British army and a Greek mother. After his parent's divorce when he was six, he was brought up in Dublin by a great aunt. At the age of nineteen, he went to America, eventually ending up in New Orleans as a newspaper reporter. His flight from Western materialism brought him to Japan in 1890, where he worked for an English newspaper, the Kobe Chronicle, and taught in various schools. In 1896, he began teaching English literature at Tokyo Imperial University, a position he held until 1903, and at Waseda University. Hearn married a samurai's daughter, Koizumi Setsu, became a Japanese citizen and a Buddhist, and changed his name to Koizumi Yakumo. At the young age of 54, he died of a heart attack. Hearn's search for beauty and tranquility, for pleasing customs and lasting values made him a confirmed Japanophile. His keen intellect, poetic imagination, and wonderful clear style permitted him to penetrate to the very essence of things Japanese. He became the great interpreter of things Japanese to the West. Hearn's most famous work is a collection of lectures entitled Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation (published posthumously in 1905). His other books on Japan include Out of the East (1895), Kokoro (1896), Gleanings in Buddha Fields (1897), Exotics and Retrospectives (1898), In Ghostly Japan (1899), Shadowings (1900), A Japanese Miscellany (1901), and Kwaidan (1904).

Japan through an old window.

I must admit that this review is tainted with bias. I read this book after staying in Izumo and Matsue on a week long trip to visit a good friend. In Matsue, Lafcadio is probably the most honored celebrity to have ever resided in the city. Statues, posters, honorary names of places abound with his image. I toured the house he lived in and describes in the book, and I became curious about this man I knew only in name.
So a week later I bought this book. It is a collection of his writings from 1891 and his first days in Japan to when he left Matsue just a few years later. The stories range from his personal favorite of telling ghost stories and fables of old, to his traveling adventures, which usually involve temples and festivals. Some stories are really edifying (especially when I had been to places he described), but I must admit that many times my attention was stretched thin and I grew bored.
Many moments in the book are enlightening and offer a glimpse of Japan and offer insights into the culture, but now after spending over a year here, I have to admit that most of these insights are a part of the past. Most of what is written is no longer around. Maybe it is because@I spend my time in Tokyo, but I feel somehow disconnected to the tales of festivals and people that filled Lafcadio's life over a hundred years ago.
But that is to be expected I guess. The true complaint I have is that after a few temples and shrines, every place seems the same in its confusing description, and it gets, if not redundant, old. The use of the Japanese language will prove confusing for people who have not studied the language. Even I, who is still slowly but surely learning, was stopped occasionally at a word thrown here and there. Also Lafcadio really does have a love for Japan. Sometimes it is easy to see why. Yet even though he never brings himself to admit it, he will often defend Japan at the expense of all things western. (The most foreboding was where he praises the loyalty of the common Japanese for their Emperor and how wonderful it is. Something that just 50 years later would be exploited and manipulated to horrific degrees.)
This is what half of the book is like. Other times there will be captivating stories that transcend time and bias and are completely absorbing. Lafcadio's prose are fluid and natural and I must admit make me jealous that I lack any such writing skill. It is captivating for exactly what the title says. It offers a glimpse into Japan that frankly does not exist anymore, at least that I know of.

Lafcadio Hearn--a unique "resident" in Japan and a famous Writer

Lafcadio Hearn is a notable person in Japan now and yesteryear. In 1947 for a month I lived in "his Matsue" and also nearby Yonago. His tales of Fox are very relevant to this area with many shrines to foxes and in turn the many symbols for Fox from village folk. For a westerner his varied writings combine enthusiasim with accurate description of what must be the enigma of Japan. I enjoyed his writings, again, in an economical book. My reading supports my interest in HAIKU and four modest books.

LaFosse is co-founder of the Origamido Studio, a learning center and design studio dedicated to the art of origami, and the only place in the world specializing in hand papermaking for the origami artist. Makes great monetary gifts!

As I've begun to start on my new hobby, a friend of mine gave me a heads up that you can actually take money and use them as projects. I thought to myself, well money is paper why not? Did a little research on Amazon and discovered this recently released book. Through my online research on origami, I've stumbled upon the authors names many times and figured why not take a chance on them since I've only read good things about these 2.

Much to my surprise, the projects aren't that difficult as they looks. Some actually are quite complex but for a beginner like me there are many options to work on. I'd recommend this book to those who are in to origami as well.

The best part is the finished projects make great gifts. So next time, instead of that card with money, why not use that monetary gift and put a nice spin to it?

Three Books by Kosho Uchiyama

"The Wholehearted Way", "Opening the Hand of Thought" and From "Zen Kitchen to Enlightenment" I have re-read these books so many times that I think of them as different components of the same work, since the subjects interweave to produce a wonderful fabric of integrated Zen practice viewed from different perspectives. At first glance all of these books might seem "lightweight". I thought so at first because of their covers. Especially "Opening the Hand of Thought- Approach to Zen". It suggests a new-age type of quick fix book about Zen. Nothing could be further from the truth. This was just the book I needed, though I didn't yet know it. Having come to Zen meditation 2 years before reading this book, I was still unclear about meditation (zazen). Many of us reach the point where we realize that we need and want to practice meditation. Then we get to the same point of the monk in Master Dogen's (1200-1250) quote in Fukan Zazen-gi:
"When Yakusan was sitting [in meditation], a monk asked him 'What do you think when you sit?' The master said, 'I think of not thinking.' The monk inquired further, 'How do you think of not thinking?' Yakusan replied, '[by sitting] beyond thinking'".
What is beyond thinking? This is where Uchiyama makes his point of departure, walking us through just this juncture. He describes the movement of the mind and what need be done or not done about it. He even includes a diagram of the action of the mind getting caught up in thoughts and alternatively falling asleep. He speaks of zazen as neither developing thoughts, nor hating them, but releasing them (hence the title Opening the Hand of Thought). Zazen is opening the hand of thought (not grasping thought) and returning to seeing the wall millions of times.
"Opening the Hand of Thought" addresses the vast world of seated meditation and the religious and personal underpinnings behind it. It is as though Uchiyama Roshi is your own grandfather, telling you about his life, and your life, too. It is about living the "most refined way". This is not a detached dry retelling of ancient stories about someone else, but the vital story of ourselves living the life of ourselves (which he says is the very life of the buddhas, patriarchs and matriarchs). It is the way of "not being dragged around by our thoughts" and living our lives based on this even-mindedness. We take this into our daily lives in every encounter.
"From the Zen Kitchen to Enlightenment- Refining Your Life" at first appears to be a popular cookbook appending Zen to the title for more interest. Again, not so. This is Uchiyama Roshi's commentary on another of Master Dogen's texts: Tenzo Kyokun (Instructions to the Zen Cook) which was part of Dogen's manual for his monks. Translator and practitioner Thomas Wright says in the introduction: "Now, what possible connection could a text written for a group of male monks some 750 years ago have for present-day Europeans and Americans, neither living in a monastery nor particularly familiar with the society or way of looking at life which differs totally from our modern Western societies? That is the question to which Kosho Uchiyama Roshi addresses himself when he began writing the commentary that accompanies Dogen's text". I would say that the emphasis of this book is on Master Dogen's "three minds": magnanimous mind, joyful mind and parental mind. Through meditation we come to the place where we see that the world is none other than the self and that we take care of others because they are really ourselves. Everything which arises in your life IS your life.
"The Wholehearted Way" is Uchiyama Roshi's commentaries on Master Dogen's Bendowa, his early manifesto about the practice of zazen. It is followed by questions and answers (probably asked by his chief disciple, Ejo) directed at various misunderstandings of what Dogen felt to be the true significance of zazen.
Sitting is itself the practice of the buddha. Sitting itself is nondoing. It is nothing but the true form of the self. Apart from sitting there is nothing to seek as the buddha-dharma.
Eihei Dogen, Shobogenzo-Zuimonki
Uchiyama Roshi's commentaries are in the same vein as the other books, bringing these ancient teachings to us in a fresh and vital way so that they function in our daily lives. The translations and introductions are done by three of Roshi's close disciples and long-time practitioners, Tom Wright, Daniel Taigen Leighton and Shohaku Okumura. Their comments in themselves are worthy of our study.
There is for me tremendous appeal in the great scope and depth of Roshi's teachings expressed in his straightforward and engaging way. Although carefully thought out, I get the feeling, (as I expressed earlier) of being spoken to directly. He takes great pains to really look into and study certain Buddhist terms that can cause confusion if we are unclear about them. For example, he devotes several pages to the term "buddha-dharma".
I consider these three books to be essential in the deepening of my practice of Zen and meditation. Here are Uchiyama's closing words in his foreword to "Opening the Hand of Thought":
"Above all, I hope that when you read this book, (Opening the Hand of Thought) you will forget your sentiments about exotic foreign lands and read with a completely fresh mind. I hope that, as you read, you will look at your own life and apply what I have written to your everyday life. That is the only place where the real world of Zen is".

This is just about the best, and simplest translation of Dojen's Bendowa I have seen. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the basic writings of Dogen, and the practice of zazen...

Symphonious silence

This is a book on Dogen's Bendowa. Commentary by Kosho Uchiyama Roshi. Translated by Shohaku Okamura and Taigen Daniel Leighton. These guys are all masters in thier own right.

The Whole Hearted Way is Dogen's view on the importance of zazen. He gives a short talk followed by answers to questions - probably to his main disciple Ejo. Dogen's dharma talks are often confusing and hard to understand. The biggest reason lies in the fact he was a genius. And partly Due to the fact he lived 800 years ago and dedicated his life to the Bhudda-dharma. Good thing for people like me there is a Zen master like Uchiyama out there.

The commentary by Uchiyama to me is the best part of this book. This isnt a knock on Dogen at all. This book is based on Dogen's Bendowa talk, but it is quite short. After the initial talk by Dogen, Uchiyama makes this book his own. He is down to earth, very funny and highly realized/profound. What more could you ask of a modern day Zen master translating an almost millenia old masterpiece?

Uchiyama doesnt stray from his commentary on the Bendowa. Yet he weaves his own life and zazen experiences into it (its rich in down to earth wisdom from two highly gifted zen masters, cant beat that). He teaches what to aim for in zazen and how to maintain compassion for oneself and the difficulties one may encounter. Uchiyama takes Dogens Bendowa line for line and explains it. He blends his own teachings with it in a way that not only talks of the virtue of zazen, but gives one motivation to continually engage it. Yet Uchiyama doesnt give you a fish and feed you for a day (its not typical motivation). Rather he says heres the ocean, heres your life and heres your zazen. There is no seperation between them. Everything sustains everything. Zazen is the realization of this universal truth.

After reading this book my 'idea' of zazen seems lighter and fresher. I still have continuous questions about this practice wich I think is natural (but it's best to let "secretions secrete as secretions" I've learned). This book did help me see zazen as less of a obligation, and more as an expression of life manifesting life (theres no seperation or duality in pratice/enlightenment). Due to Uchiyama's stories, metaphors and engaging imagery no doubt. I guess you could say I recommend this book. I dont think you can go wrong with this gem. Peace...

The best part of this flashcard set is that many derivatives and examples are given for each word. 448 main cards include 1792 additional derivatives--this is how Arabic works, if you learn a single root, your knowledge of grammar rules helps you multiply that root into lots and lots of related words. Bottom line, a bigger vocabulary with less memorization. I'd recommend these flash cards to anyone.

Great Concept - Poor Quality

I have at least ten products that I have purchased over the last five years to help me learn Arabic. The flashcard idea is a good one, but this set is filled with an unbelieveable amount of errors both in Arabic and in English. I stopped counting after 30 errors! Seriously, I don't know that much Arabic to even find close to the number of errors there must be in this product. I called the publisher (Tuttle) twice and emailed twice to request that I be compensated for this poor quality product. The lady on the phone seemed to take in all the information about each and every error that I found (thus far) and took my address and phone number, etc. Still, I have not heard from them.

Incredibly useful resource

Truthfully you could make your own flash cards but the great thing about this course is that the hard work has already been done for you and the author has already selected the most useful words for you to learn. After having learnt words from this course I had my learning reinforced through everyday Arabic conversations and news broadcasts because this course teaches you words in common use. The words from this course really stick in your head and conveniently every flash card has example sentences and other words from the same root.

It's true there are mistakes with the Arabic and English eg. a dot missing here and there, or a missing shadda but you won't have any trouble finding the error because the other source for the word on the card is correct. My only gripe is that one side of the card is appropriately all in Arabic however the reverse size is in Arabic, transliteration and English translation. So it's not possible to test yourself from English-Arabic and the transliteration catches your eye on the reverse side and you don't use the Arabic script as much as you should. Aside from this gripe flash cards are the best way to learn vocabulary fast and this is best flash card course for Arabic I've found.

I intend to buy Volume 2 soon and I hope a 2nd revision is released soon for the first volume with only English on one side, only Arabic on the other side, no transliterations and the necessary spelling corrections.
