Letters of the Dragon

From this book, I learned that reading someone's correspondence provides insights into that person's life that might not be as available through biographies, or even autobiographies. These letters were intended as intimate and private expressions from the heart, to be transmitted to family members and close friends. They were not formal and highly edited manuscripts prepared for a large unknown audience. They helped me to understand this man.

I found the following especially interesting.

He loved his wife and children very much. He repeatedly mentioned them in his letters.

He had no animosity towards the Japanese. He loved Japanese food, found samurai movies entertaining, delved in the Japanese martial arts, and enjoyed his visit to Japan.

He stopped in Hawaii (that's where I'm from!) on his way to San Francisco. And he wrote about plans to honeymoon in Hong Kong, Japan, and Hawaii, with his wife, Linda.

His agent tried to connect him to the Hawaii 5-O television series. p. 103

He gave encouragement to other pioneering Asian martial artists (e.g., Jhoon Ree) in their missions to establish themselves in the United States. In a letter to Ree, Lee expressed this familiar coping strategy, "Remember my friend that it is not what happens that counts, but how you react to them." p. 117

He tried to make his television character, Kato, more of an "active partner" of the Green Hornet, and less of a "mute follower." p. 77

Generally, this collection describes the development of a human being who made a dent in the universe. Bruce Lee's energy, optimism, struggles, and visions are on display in this volume.

the real Bruce Lee....

I thought this book offered a completely different perspective of Bruce Lee and offered quality reading into the personal life of a famous martial artist. His letters were very honest, thought-provoking, and genuine from beginning to end. There was one very short and disturbing letter towards the end of the book which, in my opinion, was a significant clue as to why he passed so early and I hope other readers can understand this clue as well.
John Little did an extraordinary job of presenting the letters in order and importance as with all of his books on Bruce Lee. Highly recommended!

A Peek into Lee

This collection of correspondence gives the reader a chance to peek into the mind and life of Bruce Lee. We get to tag along on his first trip to the US since his birth, his friendships, his marriage, his children, what he thought of the jet set, how the dog was eating, father-son bonding, etc. His heart went into every word, as his hand interpreted the flow of his mind.
Bruce's widow, Linda Emery Lee Cadwell, mentions in one of the forwards that until the last year of his life, Bruce didn't have enough money to make excessive long distance phone calls. I'd hate to sound selfish, but, lucky for us.

Not sure about this one...

I'd like to point out before I get into the meat of this review that I am not out to give the writer, sorry "compiler" a damn good ragging, but I am not at all sure this book is as good as you may have been led to believe by the reviewer before me. OK, first, the positive points. There are many well known proverbs in this book that will be useful to anyone who is interested and each proverb is illustrated by a cartoon. So far, so good. However, I have found that a couple of these proverbs are unknown to my Japanese collegues who doubt their authenticity. For example, one of the proverbs that I liked when I first saw it is "Ke bukai mono wa iro bukai". The translation being "A hairy thing is a sexy thing". Well, if you know anything about Japanese culture and attitudes and believe me, I do! I work and live in Japan and I speak Japanese and know a lot of Japanese people, then you will know that body hair is considered to be dirty and repulsive. So how can there be a proverb like that? It stands to reason! Another example of an "unknown" proverb is "He o hitte shiri tsubome" which is supposedly a Japanese version of "It's no use closing the stable doors after the horse has bolted". The Japanese version translates as "It's no use scrunching up you buttocks after you have farted". This is more or less how it is translated in the book. It is an appropriate image, however no one has heard of that either! It is a proverb I like to use from time tio time in English but when I tested out the Japanese equivalent amongst friends, they just thought I was being rude. In fact the word "he" is a coarse word to use in Japanese. "Onara" is more aceptable, well, about as acceptable as talking about farts can be!!! When I have to explain a Japanese proverb to a Japanese person, I can only conclude that the proverb is erroneous to start with. I don't think this is a reliable book. If you get it then check out which proverbs are authentic with a native speaker so you don't end up looking stupid or intentionally rude.

An uncle of mine passed away when I was only about ten. We were very close- even today, my mother and my aunts and uncles tell me how much I remind them of him. Two things immediately pop into mind when I remember my Uncle John- first, he was something of an oddball. And second, he had a passion for languages. Uncle John could speak just about any language you could name. He was particularly fond of Japanese, and I remember him reading to me from "Even Monkeys Fall From Trees." When he passed away, I inherited his copy, and it is to this day my most treasured possession.
What of the book, then? It is really quite simple- it is a collection of 100 Japanese sayings, written both in phonetic Japanese and with an English equivalent (Example- moshi wa moshiya- "for rice cakes, go to the rice cake maker"). Opposite each proverb is a full-page illustration, with the proverb written in Japanese calligraphy. A short preface by the author is included on the significance of the proverbs in Japanese culture, and a short appendix is also included which attempts to find an equivalent adage from our culture for each proverb.
This book is a rich source of inspiration, and I have continually found new meaning in the sayings contained within. The simplicity of its design affords a certain elegance, as it presents the proverbs in a manner which stimulates the reader to find his own wisdom in them. The illustrations are clever and appropriate, and yet do not force a specific interpretation.
This book would make a fine gift for anybody, especially a child, as it is the rare sort of book that one does not merely read, but rather grows with, like a close friend. Whether you're looking for an interesting way to learn some new Japanese, or merely searching for insight, BUY THIS BOOK.

Another Opinion

I just finished going through this book, and I enjoyed it very much. Today I read the other reviews, and I can understand their opinions, but think another perspective should be added. I'm sure my Japanese is not nearly as good as the other reviewer, and I don't live in Japan. Still, here is my opinion.
Translations are difficult in any language. Working on some very simple translations I found them most challenging. For example, the word Kobunboku I translated as Plum Blossom. If you translate the Kanji singularly and literally it would be Nice Prefered Wood. But if you understand the symbolic compounds it reads "The famous tree of Chinese literature" the flower of peace, the plum blossom. Most Japanese people would not recognize this literary compound. In reality no translation is perfect. In the version of one of these proverbs I have: "Fallen blossoms don't return to the branch. . ." It includes: "There is no sense in crying over spilt milk."
As far as testing them on Japanese friends, and average Japanese people having not heard them. . .would this be less common with English idioms? The South has many idioms people in the North have never heard. "He's drunker than Cooter Brown" "Penny wise, Pound foolish" I never heard till I was 40.
I would add I don't think it is a good idea to try and use these proverbs to impress Japanese speakers. Contrivance is rarely respected.
I greatly appreciated the author including the Kanji, Romanji, Hiragana, and English, and I think the book is helpful and a lot of fun to read with some nice thoughts to reflect on their wisdom.

I live in Japan and I am here to tell you that these proverbs are rarer than an uncooked steak. 80% of the proverbs my Japanese friends have never heard of, and the rest they are not sure what the proverbs actual mean. My advice is master the easier Japanese first!

A Japanese 'Odyssey' or 'Iliad'

This is one of *the* classic books of Japanese folk-lore.
Ten Foot Square Hut is a short(ish) philosophical piece. Personally, I found it harder to read, but I can see the value in it, and admit that it is probably my understanding that is limited rather than the piece itself.
The Tales of the Heike, on the other hand, I have to rave about. Also known as the Heike Monogatori, this epic poem is basically just an account of the great war between the Heike and Genji clans occurring in approximately the 12th Century. These two opposing clans were locked in a major war for the control of Japan, which would culminate in the destruction of one of the clans and the national dominance of the other. However, this is an account written in the Homerian style, with lyric, flowing poetry which works to heighten the whole experience.
Tales of the Heike is one of the first military tales of Japan, which is not particualrly surprising, as the war between the Heike and Genji was formative in Japan's history: it was a time when the Samurai code, Bushido, was still developing and when the Samurai tradition was still in its infancy.
This is a great book and well worth reading, both in its own right, and also for the background it provides for other works on Japanese history and for understanding the evolution of Japanese culture in feudal times.
For an interesting tale in a different medium that draws upon Tales of the Heike, check out the comic Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai, and the 'Grasscutter' storyline in particular.

A classic

"Ten Foot Square Hut" is an unforgettable, true, and brief memoire by a Heian-era court noble who gives up city life to live in the wooded hills outside of the city. One of his most memorable observations about Kyoto life at the time is that following fashion will exhaust you, but failing to follow fashion will make people think you're crazy. He walks away from what we might call the "rat race" of the time as well as a series of natural calamities (fires, storms and earthquakes) in Kyoto. In building his movable hut, he has chosen "like a hermit crab" a shell only as big as his basic needs.

If this sounds a bit like Thoreau, it is. Like Thoreau, the writer's a bit of a curmudgeon. Better than Thoreau, he's elegantly brief. The piece can very easily be read in one short sitting, and is enjoyable to re-visit over and over.

hauntingly beautiful

I've only read the first part- "The Ten Foot Square Hut"- and can't remember the last time I was so deeply affected by a short work of prose. Maybe it's because, way down inside, the author's feelings resonate with me. "Hojoki" (the Ten Foot Square Hut's Japanese title) is a stark reminder that sorrow and disappointment with the world is nothing new, and the desire to just run away from it all at times is only human. Recommended.

About the Author
Scott Shaw is a master instructor in the Korean martial arts of Hapkido and Taekwondo. He is certified as a seventh degree black belt by the prestigious Korea Hapkido Federation, and frequently travels to Korea to train directly under the art's top masters. Shaw has published articles in a number of international magazines, including Black Belt, Inside Karate, Inside Taekwondo, Karate/Kung-fu Illustrated, Martial Arts Masters, and Taekwondo Times. Great Book on Hapkido!

As a practitioner of Hapkido for fifteen years and an Instructor for ten, I think this is a great book on Hapkido -- it really takes the reader to the essence of the art.
Hapkido is such an elaborate system of self defense, I think few people really realize how impossible it is to truly illustrate this art in the form of a book. Master Scott Shaw, does just that, however. Through very clear detailed descriptions and photographs, he instructs the reader in the true self defense aspects of Hapkido.

This book is basic and lacks any intermediate techniques.

If you don't know how to kick and have never thrown before - this book is for you. If you are currently taking hapkido lessons, are beyond your first couple of belts and want to supplement your master's curriculum - I wouldn't reccomend this book. Mr Shaw makes some broad statements about the history of Hapkido which may not be supported by the entire Hapkido community. However, Mr Shaw provides a very knowledgeable account of Korean history and lots of clear photographs.

Understandably Good

As one of the few practitioners of Hapkido in Hong Kong I have read Scott Shaw's articles on Hapkido in magazines like Black Belt and Taekwondo Times for years. So, it was no surpirse to me when I picked up this book that I found it to be well put together and a great source of information on this advanced system of self-defense. There are two things I really like about this book. The first is the presentation of the true history of Hapkdio. The second is that each self-defense technique is clearly and completely described. This book is a great source of reference on Hapkido. RECOMMENDED.

About the Author
Daniel Beard was born in 1850 and lived most of his life in Kentucky. From an early age, Beard decided to devote his life to American boyhood. He was a prolific writer, illustrator, the founder of two different societies for boys and one of the original founding members of the Boy Scouts of America. Beard's writings were a great influence on Theodore Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot, and helped impress the need for preserving America's forests on them. Before his death in 1941, Beard received the only Golden Eagle badge ever awarded for his work from the Boy Scouts of America, and had the mountain peak adjoining Mt. McKinley in Alaska named in his honor.

A needed book today

When I was about 8-10, and on into my early teens, I checked one book out of our public library more than any other. That book was "andy boo for boys," at least that is what showed on the cover. The book was very warn and the cover had been taped with black binding tape. In so doing the first and last letters of two words were covered. The book was "Handy Book for Boys." I was talking to my brother a couple of months ago and realized his grandsons would probably love the book. So I bought my brother a copy, as well as one for myself. When the book arrived at my brother's house, the grandsons immediate confiscated it and began to devour its contents.

In today's world, with our children captivated by the phosphor screen in their rooms, this book is a window to possibilities that this generation has forgotten. The memories that a family will build with this book will be a legacy that will only grow with time. Right now, my brother and his grandchildren are building a "bunk house" in his back yard. Oh, the stories that will be told as the years pass!

Favorite book as a kid and taught me allot of usefull things that most aren't taught today

This book can occupy a kid for almost their entire childhood with the ideas inside meanwhile teaching them allot of things that most kids in today's world never do. Now i hear allot of people talking about supposed racial slurs, yet there are no slurs at all, simply the terminology is of a different era. The book never uses the N word, but things like colored people which was the appropriate term in that era that was NOT derogatory. This book enthralled me from the first time i found it buried in our bookshelf and still does, i use it as a reference on how to make proper knots, or cool project ideas, finding ways to have a little adventure in my life. You will find complex projects that require a month of work, or ones that take ten minutes, it is a must for any American boy who wants to be more than just a gameboy kid who if stuck in a tight situation has no survival skills outside of suburbia.

classic book for boys

I as a little skeptical when my daughter suggested I purchase this book for my 7 year old grandson. When i gave it to him to my delight, he could not take his eyes off of it. He could not wait untill he could make some of the interesting things that the typical boy of today is deprived of. Of course, it requires some parental involvement, but it will provide worthwhile expereiences for kids, their parents, and grandparents.

Good collection, dubious introduction

Bruce Ross has assembled a wonderful collection of haiku by many well-known and some not-so-well-known poets. The layout is excellent, maximum of three haiku on a page and nice typeface. The book is a nice size and a pleasure to hold in one's hands.

The selection, of course, reflects Ross's values and is thus not inclusive of the wide variety of approaches to haiku in the English language. And it is a selection of North American haiku from a 10-year period 1982-1992, so this should not be seen as a comprehensive collection by any stretch.

The introduction is so-so. Ross uses some terms that are not explained and can be quite dismissive of certain approaches to haiku. So take his intro with a grain of salt.

If you're new to writing haiku, don't view this as a "how to" book. It's an anthology. For a "how to" introduction, William Higginson and Penny Harter's still in print THE HAIKU HANDBOOK: How to Write, Teach, and Appreciate Haiku, is highly recommended, both entertaining and inspiring.

Ross says some good things too. But reducing Issa to a "Shintoist" is way off, as Issa was a Jodo Shinshu priest. Fortunately the book isn't about his introduction, which is mercifully brief, it's about the haiku contained therein, all of excellent quality.

An interesting collection

This collection is more limited in scope than Cor Van Den Heuvel's "The Haiku Anthology." Most of the haiku here were originally written or published between 1982 and 1992. The restriction to North American haiku leaves out some notable English-language haiku poets. Still this is an interesting collection. A few examples -- Alexis Rotella:
An old woman with bread / waves the geese down / from the sky.
Robert Spiess:
Winter wind-- / bit by bit the swallow's nest / crumbles in the barn
George Swede:
Night begins to gather between her breasts
As I said, an interesting collection, but one that I'd only recommend if you already have Cor Van Den Heuvel's anthology.

One of my favorite haiku books

This book is highly rated because it is simply a book of haiku--not someone talking or analyzing haiku. Sometimes, when reading haiku, I like a change from traditional Japanese haiku of the past. And the haiku in this book I think is of good quality. I would highly recommend it.

Addendum: Since my first review, I have continued to immensely enjoy and be impressed by this this high-quality collection of haiku. There has been no disappointments as I continued to read this book. To me, this is a must-have collection of modern haiku and my rating remains the highest.
