Cute and classic patterns!

Recently, I've been starting to sew for my kids, and something I love about Japanese sewing books is the cute, classic and simple designs they contain. This book is no exception! It has a great collection of patterns that are super-cute, but not difficult to sew, and you can't beat the price (seriously, 24 patterns for the price of this one book?! Fabulous!) These are typical Japanese sewing patterns (i.e. a lot of patterns per sheet, and seam allowances need to be added after the patterns are traced out), but there are several ways to accomplish this...if you don't like to trace stuff (i.e. to preserve the original pattern sheets), you could just take it somewhere and have the pattern sheets copied, add some seam allowances, and then cut out what you want from your copies. If you don't mind tracing patterns, an easy way to make a 'light box' so that you can clearly see what you're tracing is to flip a clear plastic under-bed storage box upside down over a light (flashlight, etc.), put the pattern sheet on top (i.e. the bottom side of the box), and trace away... just some ideas to make this task a little easier =) Long story short, as a mom who wants cute and easy patterns to sew for her kids, for a reasonable price, I highly recommend this book!

Clear, easy, and cute

I am in love with Japanese designs for children, These patterns are very easy, and lack of seam allowance makes them even easier to adapt to children's measurements. They are clear, well marked, and easy to follow. I love their simplicity and elegance. They are also very generic, which allows for lots of own creativity and original look of one's creations. I don't have much experience with sewing and yet I managed beautifully with this book and its patterns.

Very Confusing

I have been sewing for 30 years and can read most any pattern, this pattern book is simple in the sewing instructions but NOT when it comes to the patterns the lines are so close that tracing the pattern is difficult and time consuming, the pattern pieces are hard to locate because of the layout on the sheets.

Also you have to add the seam allowance yourself and I hate to have to do that!

The patterns are adorable and the fabric she uses complement her designs.

Don't be fooled

I am a big fan of Alan Watts. I know of no one else that has the charisma, sense of humor, and intelligence to communicate ideas from Hindu and Buddhist thought. I have read several of his books and while this book is as good as any other- I WARN YOU - it has very little about the beat generation. In fact, there is one ten page essay. It is interesting, but if you are buying this book because you are interested in the beat generation there are more informative books. This book is also a little expensive and is less than one hundred pages. Try "Cloud-Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown" or another one of his cheaper and longer books. Most of them contain similar ideas.

Forget the misleading "Beat" title...but it's good!

Definitely don't buy this if you're looking for lots of info or an extensive essay on the "beat" generation, etc. The awesome Alan Watts does deal with that topic, but almost in passing. He's goes into more detail explaining Zen and Hindu ideas with a huge helping of humor. Some ideas will stay with you. His emphasis on the key concepts of living the moment and a job as an avocation (not just to spend x number of hours making money but to do for the JOY of it)forever will be imprinted in your mind, as well as various clever examples he sites. Especially memorable is his explanation of how we Americans often live too much in the past and future and don't appreciate the present. He likened it to a coin: one side is the future, the other the past -- but the REAL stuff is the metal in between (the present). A small book with lots of big ideas that are cleverly presented.

Still fresh & relevant after more than half a century

While this slim collection of radio talks only occasionally deals directly with the Beat Generation, its essence is utterly relevant to not only the Beats, but to anyone today who chooses a life counter to the prevailing consumerist culture. It's vintage Alan Watts, in his always engaging tone -- an easy-going style that in fact encompasses quite a lot of erudition. He has the rare ability to be accessible to people from all walks of life without ever dumbing it down in the least.

At heart, Watts is reminding us of what we already know, even as we so often fail to follow through on it. That is, the world of endless production & consumption is not only an ever-shrinking serpent devouring its own tail, it's a way of life (or anti-life to be more accurate) that devours us as well. Everything we're raised to admire & aspire to -- success, wealth, the shiniest new things -- is turned on its head & shown to be our master rather than our reward.

He offers the examples of Taoism, Vedanta, and Zen as more truly rewarding paths to follow. Not as rigid, conformist disciplines that kill the spirit in order to maintain the letter of the law, but as alternative modes of experiencing the world, and experiencing ourselves in the world. He offers nothing less then the possibility of a more whole & spiritually healthy life, one that engages body, mind & soul, rather than constricting & crippling them in the name of a hierarchical power structure -- and if that isn't describing the Beats, or any other counter-cultural movement of the past couple of centuries, then nothing is!

Still Bruce, but...

I heard several of these interviews from other sources. If YOU haven't then the book might be worth your time and money, but then again even the interviews in the book get old. Each interviewer asks the same questions and Bruce gives the same answers. It's less thrilling than other Bruce Lee books.

It was a pretty good book, however, like people have mentioned, some of the stuff is repeated. A lot. I don't know how many interviews he did in that period of time, but I wish they had done better choosing what they did instead of repeating so much of the same stuff. The one I really wish they had put in there was his most famous interview. The one they video taped, where he talks about everything while trying out for a tv show. If you've seen the new Enter the Dragon 25 year anniversary, its the one before the movie that lasts like 15 minutes. They should have included a text version in this book.
If you find this book on sale at a used book store or something, pick it up, it's worth it. But don't go spending full price for this, because it isn't worth it. If you find it on Amazon here along with another book (like Tao of Gung Fu and this together) then go ahead and get them. To buy this book solo though would just be a waste, you would have it done within a couple of hours.

better title 'Words about the Dragon, Press Reports'

The title of the book „Words of the Dragon, Interviews 1985-1973" reflects a little bit a wrong impression of the book. A better title would be „Words about the Dragon, Press Report 1958-1973". At the beginning of the book a few things are repeated over and over again. It seems that it would be difficult to investigate e.g. how old Bruce Lee was when his parents returned to Hong Kong. Only at the end of this book one could catch a small impression of Bruce Lee's philosophy. His carrier as an actor comes primarily up. The US Press didn't understand until Bruce Lee's death that his art wasn't Karate. I expected more philosophically thoughts and background knowledge of his martial art. The Bruce Lee connoisseur gained no really news and I thing the book isn't stimulating for beginners. I was impressed by the letter of Brandon Lee, which is printed at the end of the book.

About the Author
Phan Van Giuong is professor in Vietnamese studies and served as the Convenor of the Vietnamese Language and Culture program at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia for over 18 years. He has taught Vietnamese and English since 1965. He was the founder Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Culture Studies at Hoa Sen University. Professor Phan is the author of many textbooks: Vietnamese for Beginners (1-4), Functional Vietnamese, Modern Vietnamese (1 - 4), Vietnamese for Foreign Travellers, Vietnamese Interactive Books and a series of Pocket, Concise and Compact Vietnamese-English dictionaries. He was the editor of several Vietnamese literature magazines and newspapers and awarded the Order of Australia Medal and the International Educator of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the teaching of Vietnamese language and culture. Professor Phan is now working for the International Baccalaureate, United Kingdom.

It's okay for a quick reference

I was born in Canada from Vietnamese parents and wanted to avoid becoming rusty. Most of the time, "Tuttle Concise Vietnamese Dictionary" satisfies me. In fact, it contains more contextual sentences than its printed and even mobile (smartphones and tablets) counterparts. Moreover, the layout is very user-friendly as the English and Vietnamese parts are clearly separated with two colour blocks. The blue part encompasses all Vietnamese entries and the black one, English entries.

However, "Tuttle Concise Vietnamese Dictionary" can be a tad misleading for those who are making their first steps in Vietnamese. For instance, the word "chess" is solely translated as follows: Cờ (tướng). The latter actually refers to Chinese chess, while "cờ vua" is the Vietnamese word for Western chess. I'm just saying...

Secondly, given that many of each English verbs and words can have many equivalents, the dictionary doesn't address the confusion one might have. For instance, the verb "to cheat" has six equivalents. Unfortunately, the dictionary doesn't tell you which word is the most used by native speakers be they from the South, the centre or the North of Vietnam. Here's a hint: it's not the first word you see. ;-)

Hopefully, the dictionary will get better as time goes by. After all, it is said, right on the back cover, that the dictionary has been updated to take in consideration the evolution of mobile technology, computers, the Internet and social media. I can't wait to see what will be written on the back cover of the next edition.

Probably best English and Vietname dictionary out there.

Not always perfect, but the best choice out there. The format is great, and the collection of words and phrases is more extensive than any other book I know of out there. They went to lengths to try to include alternate uses of words in both languages. Sometimes an exact phrase or use wasn't in there, but still very complete in my opinion.

Good reference for learners.

Good dictionary, clear layout and bi-directional - important for language learners! I've managed to read some fairly difficult Vietnamese books using just this for translation where needed, and haven't come across many words at all that aren't included. Good reference material - recommended.
