Its alright, not great

This book is decent, but not great. I visited Kyoto recently and was hoping to get a nice overview of the temples that we had visited. Now understanding that a volume that included ALL temples would not really be realistic as their are so many there,I was hoping that at least the more "famous" ones would be included so as to have a nice memento of our trip. The book itself warns that it is far from a complete resource, and that it really doesnt have a particular theme.Rather, its a collection of random temples that the photographer happened upon in their own visit(s). The photos are decent, but not as stunning or as in-depth as I would have hoped.Same with what is written, the text barely scratching the surface on what each temple is about.

So again, this book isnt necessarily bad,but it left me a little disappointed. I would not recommend this book for the outrageous prices i've seen it listed at.In fact,after reading it im puzzled as to why its demanding such prices on the after-market? If this is the definitive volume in English on the topic, then that is quite sad.

As a Mah jongg instructor, I try to read everything I can about the game in order to help my students learn more easily. After reading this book, all I can say is if you are interested in learning to play Mah Jongg buy this book!! It will help you. It is clearly written, beautifully illustrated, and understandable by the most beginner of beginners. It will also help you later as you improve your game. Handy for experienced players too, as it will clarify many misunderstandings people may have when playing. Go forth and Mahj! BB

Excellent resource

I have been playing American Maj Jongg for over a year. This book provides well written easy to follow explanations and instructions for novice as well as others who have some experience. The author provides quizes to help the reader check his understanding at the end of each chapter. The best parts of the book for me were the exercises he provided for individuals to practice such skills as chosing what hand to try to play from the card. You can't go wrong with this book if you want to play American Maj Jongg (National or American).

About the Author
Richard Delacy, PhD., teaches Hindi and Urdu at Harvard University. He is the author of Teach Yourself Beginner's Urdu Script (McGraw-Hill) and Hindi in a Flash (Tuttle). He travels to India frequently.

Sudha Joshi received her MA in English literature in India and then taught Hindi in Melbourne, Australia at various universities for over fifteen years. She has produced numerous teaching materials and translated Hindi poetry into English for publication.

Simply the Best Hindi Learning Resource

I had the privilege of studying Hindi under Richard Delacy at Harvard, and piloting some of the materials that made their way into this comprehensive, well thought-out text. Simply put, there is no better book for beginning one's Hindi education, from mastering the Devanagari syllabary to approaching more complex aspects of the language (relative clauses, the challenging passive voice, the -kar form, etc) that allow one to communicate not only clearly, but eloquently. The text's storyline is amusing and as compelling as any to be found in a first-year language primer, and the explanations of grammar and usage are clear and simple without sacrificing nuance.

Finishing this textbook, with the accompanying flashcards (Hindi in a Flash Kit Volume 1 (Tuttle Flash Cards), workbook (Elementary Hindi Workbook), and perhaps a language partner, would allow a motivated student language skills akin to about three intensive semesters of Hindi, and this book would work equally strongly for independent study as it would be useful in a classroom setting. (When finished with this book, a motivated student would do well to move on to Peter Edwin Hook's Hindi Structures: Intermediate Level, with Drills, Exercises, and Key (Michigan Papers on South and Southeast Asia), and Usha Jain's Intermediate Hindi Reader.) While Rupert Snell's "Teach Yourself Hindi" set an earlier benchmark for self-study, there is now no better book than Richard Delacy and Sudha Joshi's superlative "Elementary Hindi." Happy studying!

book for the serious self-study student

I have gone through many beginner's Hindi books (including many by Rupert Snell and the Living Language books). The others are good and perhaps even a bit more *fun*, but this is the one I chose to steadily work my way through. I like the structure. And the fact that it is a large hardcover actually does make a difference when you are studying something like this. You want something you can lay out on the table and study from, and the physical size of the book makes that possible. The audio is okay, not the best in some spots, but it is fine. The pace is fast but it won't leave you feeling lost (for the most part). The accompanying workbook is a MUST for getting the most out of this course. I would also recommend having a couple of different resources, especially when first beginning Hindi. No one book can teach you everything. Overall, this book is for the serious self-study student and is like a college course you can complete at home.

The Best Out There for Hindi Instruction

I also had the privilege of learning Hindi and Urdu under Richard Delacy, only at Univ. of Illinois at Chicago, for the short time he was there. He used these text books as well as his beginner Urdu Script book, and I loved every minute of it. Looking back, it was my favorite class/favorite teacher, of my 5 years at UIC. (and I had a hard time learning Spanish!) A whole new world is opened up to you, and you can hardly believe how quickly you learn!

My Indian "auntie" saw the books I was using, and, a Hindi tutor herself, became very excited. I haven't seen the books since! She had been teaching Westerner's Hindi for years, with multiple books, and hadn't seen a more concise, simple mode of instruction for something that can feel so overwhelming to a Westerner.

This disaster is for real, and it is going to affect YOU!

I am astonished this book is out of print. Unlike most books warning of future calamities, this one's subject, a great earthquake devastating Tokyo and surrounding towns on the Kanto plain, is virtually certain to happen. The only question is "When?". The answer would appear to be, "Any time at all, now.", given the fact that detailed record-keeping shows a tremendous earthquake strikes this area about every seventy years, and that the last one was on September 1, 1923! Japan is the world's most severe-earthquake-prone area.
The author sets forth, in harrowing detail, not only what may be expected when the catastrophe occurs, but what may be expected to precede and, even more importantly, to follow the temblor.
A widespread cataclysm on the Kanto Plain will prove devastating to the economy all over the world, given Japanese overseas investment, which investment would naturally be withdrawn to rebuild the shattered megalopolis, and its varied heavy and light industry, as well as its many world business headquarters.
Indeed, given the inflated value of Japanese realty, every insurer around the globe will be jeopardized, not only through direct policies issued, but through reinsurance policies taken out by other insurance companies. This is the tip of the iceberg.
Loss of life may be astronomical. Excellent

Most martial artists have read all or some of Sun Tzu's The Art of War, as have people in the business world and military leaders on the battlefield. While Von Clausewitzsser is lesser known than Sun Tzu, he is nonetheless a powerful 19th century military strategist that most historians consider a military genius.

In Lessons in the Art of War, author Martina Sprague explores the writings of both of these great men. While they lived at different times, in different geographic locations and certainly in different cultures, Sun Tzu and von Clausewitz became masters of human nature and how that plays out in the toxic realm of combat.

Martina Sprague, a veteran martial artist and student of several fighting disciplines discusses the similarities and differences of these true masters and extracts vital elements that every martial artist must understand to truly master their fighting arts.

This book is scholarly but highly readable and should be included in every martial arts library.

Disappointing in some respects, useful in others...

Mr. Panganiban is (was?) a respected Philippine linguist. So I am a bit disappointed that this dictionary is only one-way. But the content is useful. However some words have multiple meanings and it doesn't say how they should be used.
However, I did like the section with the affix charts and their meanings.. That was very useful.
I also feel that the dictionary should have been updated more.

Dated, but useful

This dictionary is specifically intended for beginning students, it contains a limited vocabulary(I guess about 7000-8000) English entries, each entry is given from 1 to 4-5 Tagalog equivalents, different meanings of English entry words are shown by synonyms, eg. english_entry - (english_synonym1) tagalog_meaning1, (english_synonym2) tagalog_meaning2, (english_synonym3) tagalog_meaning3 etc. Accent place and glottal stops - an important feature of Tagalog - is clearly shown. The list of affixes appears to be very useful.
In short introduction the author relates the troubled circumstances of the WWII in whgich this short dictionary was born.
Of course the dictionary is dated, however since it deals only with the very basics of the language which change but very little with the time, it can be quite useful for the contemporary student.

Tagalog Dictionary

I must say that the price was right for this one. I only wish that I had paid attention to the fact that it was English/Tagalog and not English/Tagalog-Tagalog/English. Meaning it only translated English to Tagalog and not both ways as I thought most books like this should. I had to buy another book but this book was so cheap to purchase and some of the words in it are not in my other books. I do appreciate it. Thanks for great service on all ends of this purchase. I was pleased for the most part. Thanks!

My Granddaughter

I purchased this book as a gift for "Gotcha Day", a tradition started in our family when we picked up our new granddaughter at the airport. She has been exposed to a lot of Korean culture as a reminder of her birth country.

She is an avid reader at the age of six and loves this book as well as her mother and grandmother. I recommend it to any parent or grandparent of a Korean child.

Awesome depiction of traditional Korean tales that lend wonderful insight into Korean culture. As a former lit teacher who loves a great story, and as a mom who enjoyed reading stories with her children, I found each story engaging, insightful, and highly relevant for anyone interested in various aspects of Korean culture. Now that my family trains in tae kwon do--which originates in Korea--reading these tales helps us have even greater awareness of some of the subtle nuances of our interactions when we're immersed in Korean community settings. The illustrations are eloquent, quiet meditations on some of those nuances.
