About the Author
Andrew Dewar was born in Toronto, Ontario, and graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (B.A. Journalism) and University of Toronto (M.A. Japanese Studies, Library and Information Science) before moving to Japan in 1988. After completing his doctoral studies in library science at Keio University, he joined the faculty of a junior college in Japan. Soon after arriving in Japan he rediscovered his childhood love of designing and flying paper airplanes. His passion for paper airplanes led him to become president of the Fukushima Paper Airplane Club. Dewar has published over 30 paper crafting books and kits. He also teaches paper airplane workshops and does seminars at schools, libraries, community centers and museums. He lived and taught library science in Fukushima, Japan, until the giant earthquake and nuclear accident in March 2011, when the city became unsafe. After a brief stay in Canada, he's returned with his family to Gifu, Japan.

This is another great book of origami airplanes by Andrew Dewar. The illustrations are beautiful, and every page is different. I especially like that the back of each page has some surprise, even though you can't see it once the plane is folded. And the planes really fly! My kids fly them in the park, because the garden is too small!

I ordered this book for my 10 year old nephew. He had asked for an origami airplane book or kit for his birthday. He loved it! Besides the big hug we received after he opened the present, he immediately started folding papers to create the airplanes. The book includes many colorful & decorative sheets for airplanes, more than I expected, and the airplanes flew easily across the room. My nephew didn't seem to have any trouble folding the planes. He was able to construct all of them by himself.

Extremely helpful reference tool

I highly recommend this book to all who are learning Japanese. If you've learned multiple languages in the past and found the 501 Verbs series useful, this is the version you want for Japanese.

A verb dictionary with a huge amount of information is coupled with explanatory chapters on the grammar and usage surrounding verbs. I have found this book extremely helpful in my studies.

American in Japan for some years

This book helps. It not only clearly conjugates 600 common verbs but then gives 5 example sentences in English plus the Japanese translation in romaji. The headers indicate to which group the verb belongs and whether it is transitive or intransitive. Helpful. The kanji is a nice touch. The book does omit the prohibitive form. (E.g. Don't sit there!) I tried BARRON'S 1991 J verbs pocket book. The type is too small. The above book is 6x9 inches so the type is easy to read. Finally, there's a list of 277 commonly used NOUN + SURU verbs with kanji. The book was done by a team of teachers in Tokyo who used feedback from real students trying to learn Japanese. I'm pleased with this book.

I never buying anything unless i can look at it first

I bought this product because others gave it misleading reviews. I was hoping that the verbs would be written in the kanji and kana forms using furigana to translate the kanji. Its does have the verbs in all there forms and tells you which are not really used. It also tells you how to turn dictionary forms of the verbs to either the te or masu form. In that aspect the book is awesome. As for examples, it doesnt make it clear for which form it gives an example, which is a down fall. I was hoping that after every form i would get an example sentence but instead it gives us 5 random examples and if your not advanced your unsure which sentence belongs to which form. The book has potential just needs to fix those two downfalls and its awesome. Also letting the reader know if it is written in kanji or kana more often would be great also. Maybe next edition...

About the Author
Liana Romulo has lived on several continents and is a graduate of Barnard College in New York City. She practices yoga and enjoys traveling, scuba diving, and hunting through new and unusual bookstores. Liana has authored a number of books, including Filipino Friends, My First Book of Tagalog Words, and Filipino Children's Favorite Stories, which was a national bestseller in the Philippines.

Corazon Dandan-Albano has loved to draw ever since she was a child. A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, she has illustrated more than 30 books for children, including Filipino Friends and The Legend of Bamboo. A mother of two girls, Kora creates her illustrations on their dining table, between meals. Her favorite children's book character is Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk.

Great Family Heritage Book

Filipino Celebrations is truly that - a book that celebrates Filipino heritage and culture. I got the book for the kids (my son, niece and nephew) so that they can share and learn about their Filipino roots. The author depicts the customs and traditions very cleverly and clearly through a combination of narrations, which is perfect for the older kids who can read more complex words, and colorful pictures with a description both in English and Tagalog, which is perfect for the younger kids, so they can easily learn Tagalog words. Unlike most children's books, Filipino Celebrations caters to a wide range of ages, making it a family book. A huge bonus is the how-to's of the book. Even the adults can benefit...now I can make my favofite Filipino candy, pastillas (milk fudge). This book's a keeper for the family library and a book to be passed on for generations to come. Enjoy!

We love this book!

We originally got this book to read to our son to help teach him about his grandparents' culture and traditions. The book is packed with so many historical facts, new words and even recipes and songs. It is a fun way for all of us to learn more about our heritage as a family, and I know we will be reading this book for many years to come. With the holidays approaching we are definitely getting more as presents for the nieces and nephews.

Filipino Celebrations - A Treasure!

As the mother of a 7 year old "global kid", I was delighted when my son literally dove into this book and promptly informed me that he was in "middle childhood". This children's book provides a colorful and detailed descriptions of Filipino holidays and celebrations, many of which I had never heard of before. Aside from learning about the cultural origins, new words and the vivid illustrations, my son loves the "how to" instructions - many of which we plan on trying.

Adults and parents will also love this book. I now have a new found appreciation for elements of Filipino culture that I had not known before. It is an informative, engaging and gorgeous book.

I plan to get a copy for my son's 2nd grade classrom at the International School.

About the Author
Alan Watts was born in England in 1915. He was an Episcopalian priest who became the spokesperson for Eastern religions during the late 1950s and tumultuous 60s. His first book, The Spirit of Zen, however, was written in the 30s when Watts was just 20 years old. He went on to write more than twenty other books. He died in 1973.

The Best (Most Practical) Book I Have Ever Read!

This book explains PLAINLY and SIMPLY what exactly Buddhism actually is. It benefits the reader immediately. No wonder he is the "Master of Communication."
While reading this book, studying the "Concepts of Buddhism", they began to settle in my mind, coming through in my meditation. Without the "Concepts", meditation seems like autohypnosis. With these ideas from the Awakened One, meditation starts to have a lasting effect. I have had days of Nirvana without a thought in my head! I did feel as if there were no difference between myself and another. The time passed as if it were a dream. Silence. What a change from the noise that used ot go on. I owe it to Alan Watts. What an amazing man!
Used in conjunction with Alan Watts' audio cassette, "Alan Watts Teaches Meditation", this is the most practical and effective book I have ever read!

Saved my life

I was an utter emotional wreck after having recently stopped my anti-depressant. I remembered listening to Dr. Watts' lectures on the radio many years ago. After purchasing this book and beginning to read just the first few pages I immediately recognized, in this book, the same wit, humor and insight of his famous lectures. Almost to the point where, at the end of certain phrases or paragaphs, you can almost hear the late dr. laugh. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who remembers Dr. Watts' lectures, who is interested in Zen philosophy or especially to anyone who is searching for their spiritual or emotional center.

Who wouldn't want to visit Grandma Panda!

As an educator, I was taught that one of the best ways for a child to learn about another culture is through that nation's folk and fairy tales. If you would like your child to get an introduction into Chinese heritage a wonderful place to start is with the book, "Grandma Panda's China Storybook." With it's appealing and colorful illustrations the book is comprised of bits of wisdom that Grandma Panda shares with little Baobao and Lingling. Grandma is so full of love and kindness for these little ones that I found myself wishing I could go visit her for a summer. The book starts off with a feast, a Dim Sum feast. Read the story to find out why "Dim Sum" means "heart toucher." The story that explains Chinese writing does so in such an accessible way that it will help a young learner understand Chinese characters. Yip has included the story of the "Brave Woman Warrior," Mulan. What an inspiring story for girls. The story called, "The Pained Faces of Chinese Opera" gives an introduction as to why the masks in Chinese opera are so vividly painted.
What a nice introduction to an ancient land, full of such rich history. These stories could be read aloud to little ones or they're just perfect for a child in elementary school who has learned to read. Each story offers just the right amount of history to provide a good talking point, whether in a classroom or around the dining room table.
And speaking of the dining room table, my mouth is watering for some Dim Sum.

I bought this for my friends' kids and they love the colorful pictures. The stories are also of a good length so they not exhaust the kids' attention span.

Wonderful book!!

We won this book through Miss Panda blog. My four and two year old boys love it! I love it too!. The illustrations are bright and the stories are short enough to read them all each time they grab the book. I act them out in Spanish and you can use a panda bear to make it more fun. The book shows parts of Chinese culture that I have not seen in other books (and I have many!). The stories are about food, kung fu, Mulan, dragons, chinese opera, calligraphy.. very engaging!! We are learning Mandarin at home and this book gives us ideas for learning about Chinese culture. We have practiced the Kung fu posses already and we are about to learn about Chinese opera soon. Yes! they wanted to paint their faces! Great book!!

About the Author
Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook met at Columbia University in New York, where he was doing graduate work in classical languages and she studying philosophy. Both share a longtime interest in the thought and rituals of ancient civilizations. Experts on the Japanese warrior arts and ethos, they were also the authors of Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere.

A Comprehensive Study, But Facts are Shaky

This is truly an impressive attempt to cover all of the martial skills that the fuedal warriors of Japan studied. Unfortunately, their section on Aiki-jujitsu and Aikido has some serious errors. First, they claim that Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido was the only legitimate heir of the Daito Ryu school of aiki-jujitsu. This is incorrect. Tokumine Takeda, son of Sokaku Takeda (Ueshiba's Daito Ryu teacher for over a decade), was the heir of Daito Ryu. The current headmaster is Katsuyuki Kondo. There are also several other branches of Daito Ryu: Kodokai, Roppokai, and Takumakai, which were started by students of Takeda Sokaku who were actually senior to Ueshiba. Ratti and Westbrooke also stated that Daito Ryu no longer exists, and that we have no way of knowing today the techniques of the the Daito Ryu. Again, untrue. Daito Ryu is one of the most widely practiced traditional styles of martial arts (Koryu Budo) in Japan. Finally, they state with some authority that Daito Ryu descended from Prince Sadasumi. This cannot be verified, even by Daito Ryu practitioners. Like many oral tales, it is a history that people accept in the absence of confirming or contradicting evidence.
What is disturbing is that after twenty years, this information was never updated. Perhaps this was because Ratti and Westbrook did not use any original source, i.e. Japanese, material (at least I did not see any when I glanced through the glossary). Perhaps it was because they felt some need to promote aikido at the expense of Daito Ryu. It does not matter, really. Writing a traditional Japanese martial art out of any book that purports describe the history of Japanese martial arts is a gaffe that makes me wonder what else about the book they have gotten wrong.
I give the book three stars for effort, but let the buyer beware. When reading, don't believe anything until you verify, verify, verify.

An Unreliable Book Containing Fantasy Material

I am writing this review, because people are erroneously using this book as a source for research into pre-modern Japan. It should not be used for this purpose. It belongs to a genre which I call "gosh golly" books. I will proceed to comments relating to previous reviews.

1. The illustrations are modern and appear to have been drawn by a western artist. What it does not contain is reproductions of premodern woodblock prints, paintings, &c. or photographs of actual artifacts.

2. While it has a large bibliography, the works are pretty much exclusively in English and appear to be popular rather than scholarly publications.

3. This book contains descriptions of Japanese "martial arts" such as "tessenjutsu" which do not appear in reliable Japanese literature.

4. This book contains descriptions of highly improbable "martial arts" such as the supposed ability for a seated practitioner to kill an armed opponent by shouting at him.

5. The historical descriptions in the book betray a woeful ignorance. For example, chapter 1 includes a claim that Buddhism is "monotheistic". This makes me wonder how the authors managed to use the correct Japanese words for the military class and the court nobility. Saddly, the scattering of accurate information in this book makes it even less desireable as it lends credance to the book's fantasy elements.

6. One commentor recommended the books by Stephen Turnbull. If you are interested in more scholarly treatments of Japan's medieval period, I recommend consulting books by Marius B. Jansen, Paul Varley, John Witney Hall, William Wayne Farris, and Jeffrey P. Mass. Heavenly Warriors by Farris specifically deals with the origin of the buke class going beyond earlier work by Mass.

7. If what you are looking for is battle paintings, pictures of military artifacts, &c. then you should cosider ordering books from the Mook Series published by Gakken. In short. If you are seriously interested in Japan, please buy better books.

A great addition to any library

Having read Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere by Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook, I looked forward to reading this book and adding it to my library. While Aikido was the newer of the two books, it was my first exposure to these authors. I had grown fond of their academic, though dry at times, writing style as well as their tendency to research their topic in great detail. I was hoping this book would live up to that standard, and I was not let down. In Secrets of the Samurai Ratti and Westbrook explore in great depth the historical roots and many practices of the samurai culture of feudal Japan. To lend some context or background for the focus of this book they include an introduction that contains a brief time line of the era, as well as some meaning to the words bujutsu (the group of methods employed by the military). The book then quickly moves into the structure of the Japanese military itself.

The authors go into great detail on the ranking system of the military, as well as it's relation to the government of the period. However it is not a book strictly about the rise of the samurai. Instead, the authors include a vast amount of detail about many topics surrounding the warrior class. Details such as the clothing that would be common for each rank or class, the armor the samurai would have adorned and the weapons they had employed. They do not limit their exploration to just the samurai themselves, choosing to also cover more obscure topics of the samurai culture, topics such as subcultures that existed within and around the samurai: ninja, Buddhist monks, and the women of the samurai for example. The use of simple sketches and drawings help to fill in the picture and are a nice inclusion.

While they choose to cover many topics, there should be no concern that the material is watered down. Instead, the main focus of the book is given great depth. The authors go into exhaustive detail about the many military tactics the samurai had used. Exploring fighting techniques does not limit itself to weaponry and armed combat. Instead a hearty portion of the book is devoted to many styles of martial arts. Great detail is given in techniques of unarmed combat, as well as the history of many styles and schools that the samurai would have been exposed to. Certainly they give an in depth look into the religious beliefs and spirituality of the samurai, as well as any influence Zen Buddhism may have had on these warriors. Having studied martial arts and eastern philosophy a bit myself I truly appreciated the coverage afforded the martial arts, and spirituality.

Westbrook and Ratti have clearly put a great deal of research into this comprehensive and indispensable text. Some have claimed that their sources lack any ancient Japanese texts, and while most of their sources are English, they do cull information from various Japanese sources. Surely this is not the end all of information regarding the samurai, but it is certainly a good place to start. While it may be a bit dry in reading due to its extremely academic nature, it comes as no surprise and the book never claims to be a page turner. It is however a wonderful asset to anyone interested in martial arts, feudal Japan, and the rise of the militant ethos of the samurai, and may allow at least a fair amount of insight into an old and very foreign culture. This book makes a great addition to a martial artist's library, and is a great value.

Missing Tones

I am living in China and taking Mandarin lessons for the past 9 months - I bought this book on Amazon without having looked at it. It has a major flaw - the Pinyin (the a-b-c version of Characters) does not have the tone markings. This means that you will not be understood without the correct tone - I know that from repeated experience.

For instance "mai" can be pronounced 4 different ways each with a different meaning - pronounced in 4th tone is to SELL and 3rd tone is to BUY and 2nd tone is to BURY. Quite the variety.

Look at the learning dictionaries by Tuttle publishing with the author of Li Dong and then get a Rough Guide or Lonely Planet phrase book -they show Pinyin with tone marks. All have pronunciation guides in them and some grammar and phrases. The phrase books are pocket size with menu list and Chinese Characters-PinYin-English in them. I have a mountain of language books but regularly use the 3 by LiDong and my pocket phrase books.

A language DVD/CD and hand recorder to compare your voice to the DVD/CD would help you to match the tones very well if you are serious about speaking the language.

A Perfect Phrasebook for Visitors to China

With plans to study at Beijing University next spring, I thought that it would be helpful to purchase a Chinese phrasebook so as to be able to fully take advantage of all that Beijing has to offer. From what I have already read of this little, but surprisingly effective, book, I am quite confident that I will have no problems at all exploring the city.

The phrasebook is broken into several practical sections, including ones concerning greetings and introductions, eating out, shopping, doing business, and almost anything else imaginable. Do not be fooled by the book's diminuitive size; it certainly packs a punch!

Although this phrasebook is by no means a comprehensive guide to the Chinese language, it is extremely helpful for anyone wanting to gain a basic understanding of the language before venturing out to China for a trip.

Perfect for Travelers and comes with phonetics

I just returned from China and this is a convenient and perfect phrasebook for a traveler. It has the 1,000 most used phrases logically grouped together into 100 categories that are easy to find. You will see the English phrase, Pignon translation, Phonetic pronunciation (not all books have phonetics), and the Chinese characters.

I practiced the Phonetic pronunciations with my Chinese friends and they understood me! The previous reviewer states that tones are not in the book, but I found that they were expressed in the English phonetic pronunciation. The book also has Chinese characters, so if someone doesn't understand you, you just point to the phrase in Chinese characters.

For someone traveling to China and not wanting to take a long class to learn the nuances of the language or a giant book of phrases to lug around (ie, Speak E-Z book), this book works fine. And you can slip it conveniently in a pocket, purse, or camera bag as it is the size of a wallet.
