Poor Translation

This is an absolutely unforgivably poor translation--famous episodes are not even recognizable. He took a famous classic work of literature--full of pathos, humor, and drama, and not least of all romance--and turned it into tasteless cardboard. Buy McCullough's translation.

Before Genji, there was Ise

While the Tale of Genzi is the bedrock of all Classical Japanese literature, The Tales of Ise came first. Written in episodic form, each short Ise chapter blends prose and poetry, in the themes of nature image and live longing.
While having no plot per se, it does roughly track the ages of a man, a ladies man, from very young to old age facing death.
If you like Japanese poetry, this is a must read. It is also an appetizer to the much longer Genji, written 50 years later.

The Joy of a Great Cookbook!

This is a wonderful concise Japanese cookbook by an artistic chef, Kuwako Takahashi. It has many color pictures of beautiful presentations, clearly written recipes, and a great variety of classic and and some contemporary dishes.

Having "eaten my way around" at some restaurants in Japan and at many US Japanese restaurants, it's a double pleasure to see presentations I recognize as "classics", and to have the author describe clearly, often with clearly labelled drawings, just how to cut and arrange the component items from vegetables to fish and different types of sushi, and have you proud to serve them in a well presented dish or platter!

Not sure how to serve Japanese dishes...not a problem! The author show how to make tea, serve sake, and even shows the traditional order of courses as suggestions. Nearly all of the ingredients can be obtained at a typical local Asian grocery, with the remaining ones obtainable over the internet.The inari zushi covers or "bags" even come in cans, so that shortcut takes care of a few steps, if one is so inclined.

There are over 17 simple salad dressings, 8 simple ways to prepare tasty attractive rice dishes, and beautiful photos of sukiyaki to sushi, so you know how the item should look. She even has some pages on decorative food cutting. It's petty clear which are simple recipes, and which are more complex by the list of ingredients, so work your way up, from many simple and elegant recipes, to more complex if you desire.

There's a glossary of Japanese ingredients, and their substitutes, when appropriate.

The only "fault" I found is that the classic "shabu-shabu" was not in the index as such, I had to find it under "casseroles", as nabemono (a quick stew) is translated into that in English, and udon noodles are under "noodles"...fair enough!

I have the hardbound 311 page, 1994 4th printing of the 1986 copyright, and this book is preferable over many of the more recent books with it's ease of making simple tasty meals, and overall helpfulness, with pictures and suggestions to make the meals look like artistic gourmet meals, epecially if you have little prior food artistry experience.

easy to read!

I found this cookbook to be easy to read, with plenty of photographs and easily understood. This is not a hardcover book, but I kept it since it has so much valuable information about a cooking forum that I haven't seen much in the midwest. I'm loving trying the new recipes! They are as good as in any Metro Detroit Japanese quality restaurant - even better. I consider myself lucky to have so many markets available to me!

Good but some problems

I also live in Tokyo and hoped that this book would be helpful to me. In some ways it is but in others there are some problems.

The English translations of dishes are quaint, misleading and unhelpful. Nabemono as "casseroles"? Nikujaga as "Simmered beef and potatoes"? In many cases the Japanese term would be better.

The index is not helpful. If you look up "sukiyaki" in the index you will not find it under "sukiyaki". If you know the Japanese names of foods, the book is not convenient to use. You have to guess what arbitrary English name the author may have chosen.

The measurements are an inconsistent mix of metric and non metric - a good editor would have fixed that. (Why not both?)

Only a limited coverage of Japanese food is given. Many well known dishes didn't make it, but in fairness, you have to draw the line somewhere!

A few unauthentic ingredients are included and I think they should be described as such. I would rather only substitute when I can't find what I really want but the auther seems to have made a few decisions in this regard without telling us.

Coverage tends to be a little skewed toward foods presumably preferred by foreigners, which makes the book a little less appropriate for serious cooks.

Wonderful Aid for Learning

This set is just what several of my older students were looking for rather than buying a set early on to practice what they needed to become excellent players. Many will get along fine with just the book, which is larger when bought alone, but some will enjoy having the cardboard pieces to practice hands in between lessons or times when folks get together to play. I gave the set to a woman who was recuperating from foot surgery in a rehab facility so she could practice while there. For robust players, they will want to own a set, but for teaching and practicing I haven't seen anything that matches this quality. The Mah Jongg League has done a fabulous job of getting great books out to the public to make this game more accessible and fun for a greater number of people. I will buy more of this set in the future as I teach another class in the Spring.

A good deal for beginners

This is a fine starter set for those just learning to play Mah Jongg. It comes with cards instead of the standard tiles (this keeps the cost down), and I actually liked being able to shuffle the cards instead of just swirling them around like you do with the tiles themselves. I was a bit disappointed with the kit in that I was missing one of the cards (a joker) and book contains a couple of mistakes that are probably due to it being a chopped down version of Sandberg's A Beginner's Guide to Mah Jongg. The errors I caught are as follows: (1) In the Suits section, you are told that the numbers for the tiles are given on the upper left side. However the picture shows the numbers to be on the upper right. On the Mah Jongg cards included in the kit the numbers are on the upper left. (2) At the end of the Cracking The Code section, you are advised to perform an exercise. However no exercise is given.

About the Author
Linda Hibbs got hooked on Indonesia on her first visit at age 12 and has been studying the language and culture ever since. She has taught Indonesian for over two decades at the secondary school and university levels, and holds degrees in Indonesian language and ethnomusicology, as well as a master's degree in Asian studies. She is an educational consultant who has created various resources for Indonesian language educators at the primary and secondary levels, including Tuttle Publishing's Indonesian for Kids Flash Cards and More Indonesian for Kids Flash Cards kits. When she isn't teaching or consulting, she creates artworks and plays Indonesian music with a gamelan orchestra.

Fun book on Indonesia

Geared toward kids but entertaining for anyone, 'All about Indonesia' offers readers snippets of fun facts about the world's largest archipelago that joins Asia to Australia. The book is a treasure trove of accessible information about Indonesia's ecology, language, food, culture, geography, history, religions, and even everyday life. Text blocks are short and focused, while the numerous pictures and illustrations give visual points of reference on every page. Readers will be amazed at the diversity found throughout the book. Hibbs highlights cultural varieties around the country, including traditional clothing, landscapes, modes of transportation, sights of tourist interest, the performing arts, and animals, some of which have their own folktales. "Did You Know" and "Say It" captions add depth to the topic in each section. Educators looking for a hands-on resource will be pleased to find several arts and crafts projects detailed in the book. Of particular interest are the pages that teach how to make traditional masks and shadow puppets. In short, I wish I had come across a book like this when I was in school.

All About Indonesia

This is an excellent introductory book about fascinating Indonesia. The book contains excellent explanations and descriptions of Indonesian life, culture and history. The photos and pictures are stunning and capture many unique features of Indonesia. There are recipes, masks, puppets, batik cloth and even a volcano to make. Some of the folk stories of Indonesia are retold in a simple manner for young readers. There are many little balloons for extra information on how to practice language, 'did you know' and a funny Indonesian proverb. The book clearly highlights the variety of people, traditional clothes, houses and ways of life. It focuses on everyday life like street vendors, markets, transport and farm life. It is an interesting book for younger readers from age 5 to about 14 to learn about the diversity of Indonesia and to learn new facts in a nutshell as the information on each page is presented briefly, illustrated colorfully and relates to children at their own level.

Low on compassion; high on projects

This book is supposed to be a follow up to Tara Joe Manning's Mindful Knitting, however, it is less of a follow-up and more of an appendix to her other book.

First off, the title is where you will find the most "compassion" in the book. There is barely any discourse on the subject and if you are to truley knit with her brand of "compassion" or "mindfulness" then you are assumed to have read the first book. There is almost no explanation of compassion, holding mindfulness, or knitting as meditation in this slim volume, unless you count one or two sentences in the two-page introduction.

This slim volume contains very cute "zen style" patterns. The cloud pillow, stars jumper set for a child and other items are simply lovely, modern and clean in style without being too fussy or full of knitting cliches.

Perhaps what is disappointing to me is that I was looking for a discussion of compassionate knitting and not simply a catchy title for a slim volume of cute patterns. A more appropriate title would have been, Knitting Patterns in a "Zen" Style for Today's Knitter.

Seeking Harmony of Heaven, Earth, and Knitter

"Compassionate Knitting", Tara Jon Manning's second knitting book, futher explores the relationship between mindfulness, knitting, and developing a compassionate outlook, the subject she explores in her first book "Mindful Knitting." There isn't a whole lot ot text or instruction in "Compassionate Knitting", just a few pages that explain how the knitting designs presented in this book are inspired by nature or by the concepts of healing or soothing. There are 20 designs, most of which are very simple. Several of the more attractive designs have nature-inspired motifs, such as a "Cloud Pillow" which is nicely adorned with knitted-in cloud designs.

I have to say that I was not overly impressed with most of the clothing designs presented here, except for the home decor ideas. THe garment designs presented here are quite blocky in nature.

My other reservation in recommending this book is that it does not offer much knitting instruction. This book presumes that the reader has mastered most basic knitting skills. To me, this book was more about inspiring meditation than inspiring knitting.

Awesome Resource!!!

I purchased this book and CD combo while waiting to adopt our little 3 year old girl from China. I was hoping it would create some security for her, hearing her native language amongst such new and strange surroundings, but what I didn't expect was the impact it would have on our whole family! We've had a lot of fun learning to sing the songs! The book has the Chinese characters, the pinyin writing and the English words for each Chinese song. (The English nursery rhymes just have English words.) Before listening, I was afraid the lyrics might be overpowered by the music therefore making it hard to understand. This wasn't the case! The lyrics are very clearly sung with just enough acoustic guitar as background music. This is such a wonderful resource, I'd recommend it to anyone, not just families who have or are going to adopt. It would make a great gift for any family that appreciates culture and open to learning different languages. I only wish there was a set of these!

Not real Chinese rhymes

If you are looking for real Chinese songs for kids, DO NOT get this book! I don't know about those English songs, but the Chinese rhymes are awful! I am sorry to say that, but since I am Chinese, a kindergarten teacher, and a music teacher, this is one of the few times that I know what I am talking about! There are a lot of great Chinese kids songs they could use, but they chose some songs I've never heard in my life! There is even one song that they put Chinese words in an English song, and call it Chinese song, I mean COME ON! You can do better than that! Also, they did a terrible job on the CD, English songs are ok, but I don't know where they find the woman to sing those Chinese songs, completely out of tune!

Overall I don't recommend this book! And if you already bought this book, Please don't think that Chinese songs are like this, we do have beautiful songs!!

And to those who published this book! Please don't just think of making money, put some effort into it, it will make all of us happier!

Fun but recording needs work

I am a native English speaker who studied Chinese in college. I recently bought this book to learn some Chinese songs to sing with my daughter. My family has no Chinese ancestry; I just enjoy speaking the language and learning the characters, and thought it would be fun (and useful) for my daughter to learn some songs in another language.

This collection certainly is fun. Some of the tunes are new to me and some of them I already know. Each song on the CD is sung twice to a simple guitar accompaniment so the listener can hear the tune once before joining in. The text of the Chinese songs is given in simplified characters (the traditional characters can be downloaded from the publisher's website), pinyin, and English translation. The book is very nicely put together.

I do have a big complaint: Faye-Lynn has a nice voice, but the children singing along to the Chinese songs have a hard time matching pitch, which sometimes makes it difficult to discern the tune. I would guess the reason for this is that some of the songs are pitched quite low. (There is a great disparity in pitch range between different songs--I'm not sure why this is the case.) My solution for this is to transcribe the tunes so I don't have to listen to the CD any more than necessary.

Other than that complaint, I am very happy with the book and I expect that my children and I will use it for a long time. I would have rated this product five stars if the CD were not so awful.

About the Author
Wendy Hutton, a New Zealander by birth, ?rst came to Southeast Asia in 1967 and has worked in the region ever since, specializing in writing on travel and food. She has eaten her way through every country in Asia, gathering recipes from cooks everywhere from simple villages to elegant restaurant kitchens. She has written or contributed to many books on Asian food, including the highly acclaimed classic, Singapore Food. She has also written reference books on Asian herbs and spices, vegetables and fruits. Hutton is based in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

Masano Kawana is a renowned interiors, food and lifestyle photographer with a distinctly modernist touch. Previous publications include New Asian Style, a book on interiors in Singapore, Asian Bar and Restaurant Design, a book featuring 45 selected sleekly designed and wonderfully executed bars, restaurants and clubs in the Southeast Asian region, and several cookbook, including the award-winning Shunju, winner of the 2004 James Beard Award for photography.
