Don't use this book in isolation

I have finally worked my through this entire book and the pages are thumb worn so I believe I can offer an informed review. At first I really liked it and felt it was helping me learn the Hanzi characters quickly. However, after now studying Chinese for over a year I would not recommend the approach I took. I tended to use this book in isolation, learning characters, writing them out, and using homemade flashcards, but not reading them in actual text. I think that that is a big mistake. I have found I need to see the characters in an actual text to really digest them. Perhaps if the student uses this book while learning new characters from a Chinese textbook that would be better, but I would advise strongly against just plowing through the book as I did, learning one character after another and thus do less reading. I find that you don't retain the Hanzi this way.

My second criticism is that the book's stories for the characters sometimes seem to determine how they define the word. The more common definitions are at times chosen for less commmon ones and many definitions are completely missing. It would be vastly better if all the words were used in sentence like Tuttle's flashcards are. Moreover, I think a big drawback of the book is that they don't sell accompanying flashcards that use the story. (I think Tuttle's flashcard series is very good but they certainly don't give you the stories used in this book.) Otherwise the student wastes a lot of time creating their own flashcards and mistakes in the writing of the Hanzi are inevitable for the beginner. Thus you are memorizing your own mistakes.

I guess the book may be good if combined with other materials in which the student is learning to read Chinese. However, I think if I were to do it over, I would skip this book and get a really good software program like Wenlin which has a great dictionary. This gives you all the meanings of the words, it gives you the words in context, and a history of how the Hanzi developed. Probably using Wenlin, Tuttle's flashcards, and this book would be a great way to start.

Finally there are a few typos in the book. I only started writing them down after I noticed a few so there are more.

Character 782A mistakenly identifies "Tian" as "slave."
Character 511: not sure what happend here. The top Hanzi is not "Ji" it's "Jiu" and the story is also wrong - not sure where they get "baseball" from?
Character 121 is pronounced "zhi" not "yi"
Character 561 - typo for the word "moon."
Character 779: story has a typo

The Ultimate Course in Chinese Characters!

I so wish I had had this book when starting to learn Chinese! While studying on my own, I was fascinated with Chinese characters, but I never managed to retain them. During an immersion course in Beijing, I learned to memorize Chinese characters by rote, just writing them over and over again - it worked for the 6 weeks I was there since I had classes every day and used the characters a lot. However, back home and only studying Chinese once a week or so, I quickly forgot all but the most common ones again.

Then I stumbled upon James Heisig and his method for learning Kanji (Chinese-derived characters used in Japanese). It was enlightening! I actually remembered the characters, and I can still remember them several years later! Unfortunately many characters in his book aren't really useful when learning Chinese, or they may even teach you incorrectly due to the meanings having changed over time. But I had learned what method would work for people with an analytical Western mindset like me, people who don't have a good memory for pictures and who hate the dull, time-consuming and ineffective Eastern method of writing characters over and over again.

From then on, I used a similar method to learn new Chinese characters I'd encounter or old ones that refused to stick. It was tedious though. My incomplete knowledge of Chinese characters wouldn't let me see the most useful order in which to learn characters and their parts; wouldn't let me distinguish between really useful ones and obsolete ones, and so on. I also had trouble memorizing the pronunciation and especially the tone with each character.

The sample of Heisig for Chinese was a disappointment, as it didn't tackle these problems. The characters introduced are mostly the same as in the Japanese version, never mind their usefulness (or lack thereof) in Chinese, the book doesn't even mention the pronunciation of a character and after the first few lessons you're left alone to invent stories and links.

When I got this book, "Learning Chinese Characters", I immediately knew that I had found the answer to all those years of searching. This book is everything I would have wished for as a beginning student of Chinese and more:
- explanation of how Chinese characters work and how to write them, plus stroke order diagrams with each character
- introducing basic elements through pictures
- introducing more complex elements through short and memorable stories that combine the basic elements, sometimes also accompanied by an illustrating picture
- stories also remind you of the pronunciation, including a special mnemonic for the tone
- teaches the 800 most basic Chinese characters, with a focus on the ones necessary for the HSK Level A exam, and there's a story or picture for *every single character*. It doesn't leave you alone after the first few steps.
- the most useful characters (e. g. the ones for "to be", "I", "you", "good", and so on) are actually taught in the first few lessons, even though these are hard to teach and some books avoid them on purpose. This will be extremely useful for students using this book alongside a beginner's Chinese course.
- also teaches words if they can be formed using only characters that were already taught
- based on simplified characters, as these are the most common ones today, but equivalent traditional characters are given in brackets if different

Great job, authors! I haven't yet found anything worth complaining about, so my rating is 5 stars!

(Note: while the usage of particles is briefly explained whenever they come up, this book is not suitable to teach you grammar or conversation and it doesn't try to be. Use a regular course for that instead, or Chinesepod. These won't help you learn characters though, so you do need this extra book. Learning characters and learning the language have to be separate tasks in Chinese, though you can do them at the same time.

not for everyone (anyone?)

Although this book seems to please many reviewers, I think that it is too limited to be of great help to other serious learners. To begin with, the definitions are too limited and not really very accurate. To take two examples, their character 137 is xian1 which is defined as "ahead," but the central meanings are surely "first," "previous," and "before." "Ahead" is one of the meanings, but to single it out and present it all by itself is very misleading. Character 145 is dao4, which is defined as "way," and the little mnemonic story suggests that it is to be taken in the sense of "which way should you walk?" Again, the central meanings are surely "road" and "path."

A second fault is the method itself. People may be able to learn characters fairly rapidly this way, and that might help them on exams, but they may also find that they have to go through the whole song and dance each time they want to bring a character to mind. I once taught myself Morse code using short sentences, as in "Sam Said So" to remember that "S" (...) is three short sounds (one-syllable words in the mnemonic). It was very hard to build up any speed because I had to bring the mnemonic to mind in order to access the code. I'm afraid that this would work in much the same way. Brute force has something to recommend it, and that something is an immediate connection. Moreover, to put this method to use, one must spend a lot of time reading and learning little mnemonic stories (and ridiculous ones at that) that have no real relevance to Chinese.

I should also say that the "equations" they use to explain "composite" characters completely falsify the nature of the characters themselves. For example, the equation for li4 "stand" (which is their number 177) goes like this "lid + feet = stand." "Lid" is the colloquial name for radical 8; "feet" is their own invention; and "stand" is the colloquial name for radical 117, which is actually a pictograph of a standing man and needs no further clarification. (I have been referring to the traditional radical numbers here. In Chapter 24 they mention that they are using the system of 189 radicals--presumably the Xinhua system--and both "lid" and "stand" are a part of that system too. "Feet" is nowhere to be found.) To give just one more example, they say that number 195 xin1 (which they define as "spicy") "also means 'bitter' or 'acrid' and hence also "hardship." In fact, the character is a pictograph of an instrument used to mark the faces of prisoners and slaves, and the meaning "hardhsip" is basic. "Hot" (not really "spicy") is an extended meaning--not the reverse. Many of their explanations falsify the known etymology, which is very often more useful than their mnemonic stories.

One more point. No book that teaches someone to write the characters should present them in a Song typeface or other face with serifs and ornamental distortions. A Kai face that resembles Chinese writing should be used. This is more than a mere quibble.

Great book for a student of tea

I would reccommend this book for students studying the Japanese tea ceremony. This month by month guide tells which flowers, foods, pottery and poetry are appropriate for each month and season. It also has lists of all the important days of every month and gives key words and phrases asscociated with each month. It has some history regarding tea masters and it has a great glossary which gives the meaning of many tea words. This is a beautiful, useful and well written book if you are planning an actual ceremony...However, I must warn anyone considering buying this book of a few things: This book DOES NOT teach you how to perform a tea ceremony! This very thick book does not have many pictures other than a few dozen small black and whites of various scrolls and ancient art. There is not much in this book regarding different types of matcha. This book does not have photos of the many (and fairly expensive) tools you will need to make matcha the traditional way...In fact, if you have never taken a tea lesson I would hesitate reccommending this book. I had no idea what most of this meant until I took lessons! I have been taking tea lessons for about two months and TRUST ME when I say, it's practically impossible to learn how to do a proper tea ceremony from any book! (It would be like trying to learn martial arts by watching TV!) Most teachers will tell you this too. You learn the steps of a ceremony with your body and not just your mind. Other students in my class have been taking lessons for over ten years and are still perfecting their skills. The tea ceremony is a wonderful, relaxing and fun hobby. Like any fine art, it takes years of practice, patience and dedication to get really good at it. Please don't let this discourage you from learning or reading about tea ceremonies. Green tea can bring you a lot of joy and many health benefits! I made matcha lots of times before I ever took lessons and I always had fun but nothing compares to learning how to do it correctly. Overall, if you already have a fair amount of knowledge about tea you will really appriciate this wonderful book. If you know nothing about tea you might feel a little lost and may be better off with a more basic Japanese tea book. Either way, it is a very rewarding and most beautiful hobby. I encourage anyone who is interested to learn more about it. Tea ceremonies are truly the kind of thing you can keep learning more and more about for as long as you live and you may learn a lot about yourself in the process!

Chado- A Labor of Love

Like Chado this great undertaking in both the original and its translation are labors of love and I recommend the book to anyone even mildly interested in the art of tea and perhaps even more significantly to those who are interested in Japan. The tea ceremony permeates virtually all aspects of Japanese life and although this expertly written and translated work is not a how-do-do book it most certainly is a how-to-understand (and appreciate) book. Every time I pick it up I discover something that deepens my knowledge of tea and of Japan. Just last night was my last tea lesson of the year - a very wonderful occasion. I wish all of you could have shared a bowl of tea with me.

Samurai Adventure

The Taiheiki covers a period of Japanese history when there was a struggle between the emperor and the shogun for power. In this tale, the emperor notices that the shogun has amassed more power than he should have, and the emperor laments the days gone by when emperors held power. To remedy this, the emperor starts a rebellion to destroy the shogun's power. However, the shogun controls most of the military, so the emperor's struggles to gain control take on a rebellion or guerilla nature. It's a really fascinating read for those who are interested in samurai, but be warned--there are enough names to make your head spin. If you try to keep up with all of the people in this novel, it could be more of a chore than a pleasure to read. If you just focus on a few of the main characters, then it will be an interesting window into the world of the samurai.

Fantastic story and engrossing characters. This classic is always an entertaining read, and gives a deep dramatic insight to Japanese royalty and the samurai who follow them. if you like books similar to the tale of genji, then this action packed tale will fit beautifully in your collection.

The brave band faces a formidable array of enemies, foremost among them the treacherous and bloodthirsty Ts'ao Ts'ao. The bold struggle of the three heroes seems doomed until the reclusive wizard Chuko Liang offers his counsel, and the tide begins to turn.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is China's oldest novel and the first of a great tradition of historical fiction. Believed to have been compiled by the play-wright Lo Kuan-chung in the late fourteenth century, it is indebted to the great San-kuo chi (Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms) completed by the historian Ch'en Shou just before his death in 297 CE. The novel first appeared in print in 1522. This edition, translated in the mid-1920s by C. H. Brewitt-Taylor, is based on a shortened and simplified version which appeared in the 1670s. An Introduction to this reprint by Robert E. Hegel, Professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Washington University, provides an insightful commentary on the historical background to the novel, its literary origins and its main characters.

Post Red Cliff Three Kingdoms Epic

The second volume of one of the most popular Chinese literature works set in Ancient China during late second to late third century China narrates on what happened to the 3k world years after the Battle of Chibi(Red Cliff) in 208 A.D. In this latter volume, Liu Bei, Sun Quan, and Cao Pi(son of Cao Cao) name themselves as Emperors and China had been divided with Wei(Zao Pi), Shu(Liu Bei), and Wu(Sun Quan). When you read this volume you will find that lots of heroes of previous volume depart the earth such as Guan Yu, Liu Bei, Cao Cao, Zhang Fei. Particularly that of Guan Yu is tragic. On Chapter 106 even Zhuge Liang must face his own death. And that was not the end of the story. Although not as exciting as the days these heroes lived the story goes on until the Shu and Wu are conquered by Jin Dynasty led by Simas.

Note: Tuttle edition uses Wade system which spells differently from current Pin Yin system. Free softwares are available to exchange Pin Yin and Wade but it may take some time to get used to the spelling differences.

Verdict: Zhuge Liang and Simas take greater role in this latter half of the epic.
Rating: 90 out of 100
Recommended for: Chinese literature fans, fans of historical novels.

Essential Reading to help Westerners Understand Chinese Culture

It's a really long read, and there are many, many characters, each of whom may have several different names, and none of the names are easy for Westerners to remember; nevertheless, some very important mythological and historical characters permeate the majority of the book, for example Kwan Kung. You see a statue of Kwan Kung in a lot of Chinese businesses. He is a red-faced king who carries a long staff with a blade attached that is useful for chopping enemy heads off. His character is prominent, and his legend is understood by the majority of Han Chinese.

The story centers around the fall of the Han Dynasty, which is considered a "Golden Age" of Chinese History. I recommend reading this, just to gain an understanding of the attitudes and point of view of most Chinese. On the whole, most Chinese are very proud of their history, and most claim that the history is 5,000 years. Just keep reading, even if you're confused by the names and the discontinuities; by the time you're at the end, it should begin to sink in.

Beautiful work of literature

This, along with the first volume, combine to make one of the most engaging epic stories in human history. It can be dense at times and readers may find themselves reading only one chapter at a time, most of them being only ten pages, but each chapter is a rich story in itself. Characters appear and die rapidly so readers my find themselves, at first, going back to previous chapters to become reacquainted with some to try to understand their significance. This quality can slow the reading process. However, this book will provide you with years of good reading material and introduce you to great heroes and impressive strategies.

About the Author
Born in Hong Kong in 1941, Paul Eng began studying Kungfu at age 6 and has been teaching it since 1960. He has studied a range of Kungfu systems, specializing in Seven Star Praying Mantis. He has taught in New York, in Vietnam, while serving in the US Army, and in California, where he currently has a Kungfu school.

Nice book, I have been studying choy lay fut kung fu for about 4 months and this was a great primer before my first class. Made me understand so I did not have to ask so many questions, and I truly think it accelerated my learning!

Paul Eng has written a great introductory book to kungfu. His tone is very encouraging and his writing is informative but never dry. The guy loves kungfu and that's apparent from the first paragraph. He lays down all the basic information you could ever want to know to get you ready for your first kungfu class. Some of the chapter titles include:

Mr. Eng has earned some imrpessive credentials.He's studied Choi Li Fut, TaiChi Mantis, Seven Star Mantis, Fu Jow Pai ( Tiger Claw stle) and Tai Chi among others. He's been teaching kungfu snce 1960 and has taught tai chi chuan at the Kaiser Hospital Physical Therapy Department as well as served as Chief Instructor of the "Red Catcher" Combat Ranger training camp in Viet Nam during the war. If you listen to his advice your kungfu studies will be both more fruitful and more enjoyable.

Know thy basics

Well written and illustrated for understanding the basics of gung fu. Sometimes in class you may not pick up the subtle differences in foot position or receive conflicting advice on what the proper stance is. This book will help in sorting out the basics. The author also does a good job of referring the reader back to their instructor when a position is interpreted differently by various styles.
