i've worked through a couple of chapters and I have to spend more time with it yet to be sure but so far i'm very happy and plea

As at the time of writing, i've worked through a couple of chapters and I have to spend more time with it yet to be sure but so far i'm very happy and pleasantly surprised. I particularly love the subject matter and the approach taken with the grammar which seems to make it easier. Luckily i bought two books and could compare this with the other one i bought and this is the better one for my needs - which is as a traveller. The other one, Instant Japanese and although an interesting concept, i'm not sure it will be as effective as Japanese Made Easy . I'd like to write more but not at the moment.

There's one thing i'm missing in Japanese made EAsy though and i'm sure its deliberate. That is there is no pronounciation help beyond telling you how the syllables are pronounced which makes knowing how to pronounce works a lot more effortful. This may be the better system when all is said and done when compared to the system that provides pronoun cation spellings, but without any audio, i think its a weak spot in the book. So hence, i would suggest that a student does have some sort of audio aid to help with pronounciation. I've bought a flash card system of learning two scripts which has an audio and no doubt this will help me a lot. I think the book itself could be improved by having a cd in the back to attend to this matter. That said, i still think the books is fabulous and still want to give it the 5 star rating but it would seem irrational to do so given what i've just said. I am also helped by having learnt french previously and so i'm more aware of matters of intonations and stress. The Japanese stress system, seems to be much the same as the French where each syllable has the same stress.

If you're traveling for a short holiday

Then this is the wrong book to get - I am not looking to start conversations about or with Mr. Tanaka. I am looking for a survival guide to get to and fro around Japan. Purchase the correct foods, compare prices. Look for interesting places to see, wear proper clothes for the weather catch major events. I opened it browsed all the chapters found about two pages worth while and the rest is nonsense. The important things can be download easily in an app for free!

For serious students that really want to understand Japanese

I'm a Japanese learner, and I've begun to tackle the very overwhelming (and seemingly insane) task of learning Kanji. I've tried different methods of learning Kanji (Writing them over and over, flashcards, etc.), and I have found this to be the most effective book/method in UNDERSTANDING Kanji.
You learn key characters that make up Kanji characters; therefore when you learn a Kanji character. You'll say to yourself, "So that small character means "xxxx" and that other character means "xxxx." So I put the two together, and the Kanji means "xxxx." That makes sense." Rather then trying to mash into your brain the way of reading a Kanji you're unfamiliar with, you learn the concept of understanding the Kanji. You learn the pronunciation later.
But that's also the only downside. In order to commit to this great system of remembering Kanji, you have to be serious about it. So anybody that just wants to "skim" Kanji, I don't suggest you use this book. It takes commitment, and it takes time. But it pays off in the long run.

Great for serious students, not for tourists

The format of the book is to intoduce the simpler kanji first, and use sets of components which you learn before learning the associated kanji, thereby avoiding giving you kanji with unknown components. This allows you to create a stronger association between the character visually and its meaning, leaving the image much clearer in your mind. But if you want to use the book afterwards for looking up a kanji that you can't remember, then you would be much better off with a kanji dictionary or similar. Some other works have better facilities for looking up kanji, but most of the books that cover all of the every-day use (joyo) kanji are significantly more expensive than this. The stroke order numbering can also be confusing (the numbers are sometimes placed so that determining which line it refers to is difficult). If you want to quickly learn a core set of kanji that you can use, or want to be able to look up the kani you see rather than learn them all, then get another book. If, however, you want to learn the joyo kanji (something every serious student of japanese should aim to do), then this book could be of great assistance for your studies

EXCELLENT and Can Make into Study Cards

This book is a must buy. It simplifies the learning process and categorizes the characters by grouping them according to shape and meaning. With so many SIMILAR characters to learn, it is vital to have an effective system for memorizing and distinguishing them. Some characters are so similar that many students give up for this reason alone. No other book has been able to effectively group characters in a system for memorizing.

One of the most practical applications of this book is that it is laid out in such a way, that you can photocopy each page onto cardstock and make your own study cards. After copying, I folded mine horizontally along the lines so I could alternate guessing at the meaning or guessing at the character readings. I don't think the publisher even thought of this, but it works! Another great element about this book is that beside each character is shown the meaning of each complex root. For instance "irodo(ru), SAI" has the meaning of "color" and comes from the root of "harvest" and "style." At the beginning of the book, you are taught each individual root, called graphemes, so you can easily pick out which part of the complex character means harvest and which means style. Also, beside each character is reference numbers so you may look them up in dictionaries for further study. And, one of the most important things for me is that this books contains all of the joyo kanji, "the 1,945 characters recommended for everyday use by the Japanese government." The graphemes are also numbered for stroke order so that you may practice writing. It is a great place to start, and you may find out at the end you are way ahead of everbody else! This book makes learning Japanese as easy as, well, ABC.

I just received this book and haven't been able to put it down. As a child of parents from the Middle East, this book has brought me such fond memories of when my grandfather would tell us stories. The authors have written the classic stories and made the Arabic easy for people who are learning the language. These stories are EXACTLY the ones I grew up on and it has made me so happy to read this book. I am able to relive my childhood memories of spending time in Egypt and hearing these stories passed down. This book is a must have for anybody looking for classic Arabic stories! I have also been able to successfully practice my Arabic reading with this book which makes it easy with the CD provided.

A great value at this price

This is an excellent choice for the price. Both the book and CD are high quality and much cheaper than most alternatives.

The book has 66 fairly short passages, all written in a somewhat simplified Arabic. Most are variations of traditional tales. For each passage, the English version is presented on the facing page. There is no glossary, but you don't really need one.

The recordings are a bit slow, but very clear and well-spoken. They are natural sounding and recorded by very pleasant voices, (unlike some materials). Most passages include both a male and a female voice.

My only quibble - as many beginners will probably be using this, it is a pity that the texts are not voweled. I would say that the book is best for false beginners and intermediate students.

Good for (Not-so) Beginners

The stories are good, covering many aspects of Arab culture. Comes with MP3 so we can listen to how it is being said properly.

The only setback I had is that the pronunciation of Arabic scripts (fathah / kasrah / dommah; what do you call this in English?) are not placed in the text. So as a real beginner, I dont know how to pronounce the words. However, the MP3 files that came together with the book helped me with this problem.

So overall very good.

About the Author
Ron Iverson first visited China in 1984 as the personal representative of the Mayor of Chicago as part of a Sister Cities program. For the past 30 years he has continued to regularly visit China and has founded joint business ventures with Chinese partners and taught Business Strategy at Tongji University in Shanghai. He also personally arranged the first ever exhibition of Forbidden City artifacts from the Palace Museum in Beijing to tour the US. Early in his visits to China, Iverson discovered The Three Kingdoms and came to realize the enormous cultural significance the Chinese people place in the book. Believing that one needed to be familiar with the principles revealed in the book in order to find business or political success in China, and being dissatisfied with existing translations, Iverson decided to fund and edit a new translation aimed towards delivering the thrill of a contemporary novel while imparting understanding of a key aspect of Chinese culture.

Yu Sumei is a professor of English at East China Normal University. She has translated several English language books into Chinese and is the first native Chinese speaker to translate The Three Kingdoms into English. She invested a total of two years into working on this new translation of The Three Kingdoms, spending the time on sabbatical in New York with her daughter, who typed the translation out as she completed it.

Insight into life today

Vol. 2 of 3K touched me in a special way. Vol. 1 was a good appetizer. Vol. 2 is the main course. I enjoyed It especially because it gave me insights into people who I experience in daily life. Liu Bei got his vision of who he was from being a descendant of political leaders. His work experience was only as a maker of straw sandals, but his vision of who he is, is based on his ancestors. To him, this qualified him to be the Emperor of China. We all know that character traits can genetically be passed from one generation to another. Often character traits skip a generation and appear in a second or third generation person. His inheritance opened the doorway to a place of possible political leadership.
Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei's senior Advisor, is the ultimate networker. The fact that he was a person of wisdom enabled him to come up with ideas and schemes. With these qualities he was able, through networking, to be able to overcome great challenges. He was not wealthy nor did he carry a weapon other than his ability to wisely advise. Amazing.
Liu Bei's ultimate challenger, his nemesis, was Cao Cao whose ability was to charge forward with great energy in an aggressive way. Often he seems ruthless in his efforts, but this is the way of the person who obsessively charges onward to achieve his goals.
Sun Quan seems like a person who finds himself promoted into a position that is really beyond his skills and talents. He relies on advisors and skillful supporters to maintain his position.
It is easy to relate these main characters in Three Kingdom to people we meet and deal with today. This book gives me insight into dealing with people I deal with in everyday life.
This version of Three Kingdoms was an easy read. All the Chinese names and places quickly began to confuse me however the list of main characters and who they were listed at the front of the book was a big help in getting through the exciting events written in this book.

Great read, wonderful character development and intrigue.

A new character was introduced at the conclusion of volume 1 who was to play a critical role in this epic adventure. Serendipity comes to Liu Bei in volume 2 as the new character becomes his advisor. The new character leads Liu Bei to military success over Cao Cao’s forces with clever winning strategies. However, the twist in the plot a few pages later reveals the perils of deceit and cunning to which Cao Cao is capable.
Incidents like this seem to mirror real life today; what seems like bad luck actually becomes good luck. In this situation the loss of his wise advisor opens an opportunity for Liu Bei. The advisor, as he is leaving, makes a recommendation to Liu Bei that will change the dynamics of all that has come before. We gather from the sequence of events to follow a whole new range of exciting strategies and episodes, filled with surprises.

About the Author
Patrick McAloon is a Senior Lecturer of Chinese at the Ohio State University and co-founder of SinoConnect, a firm that connects Chinese people of all ages with educational opportunities in the US. McAloon has been traveling to China since 1997, when he studied at Beijing Normal University through the College of William & Mary. This is one of the most comprehensive books available for students who will be studying abroad in China. As a study abroad advisor, I am comforted by the fact that my students who will read this book will be completely prepared for their time abroad. The most impressive thing is that Patrick McAloon is able to make 304 pages (which these days is hard to get students to read) is laid out in a very easily comprehendible way and is a very quick read despite its density. Students studying abroad don’t often think of the intricacies that come with things such as buying a plane ticket from home to a smaller city in the host country. However, Mr. McAloon breaks that down and talks about the pros and cons of purchasing one type of ticket versus another, things the students would have never thought of on their own. This book also tells you how to travel, what to bring with you, how to handle customs, and is accompanied by pictures to help the reader understand and be comforted in the process. Any concern a student studying in China or even someone simply traveling to China has is covered in this book. I strongly recommend it to everyone planning on spending time in China.

I've been to China on multiple occasions, for study, business, and pleasure. This book definitely nails the experience of traveling to China, and contains a ton of extremely useful information that a first-time (or second-time or third-time) traveler can use right away. Very clearly written and informative.

I recommend this book to study abroad students and advisors alike.

As a study abroad advisor (and someone who lived in China 9 years ago), I think 'Studying in China' offers a fantastic head start in terms of understanding China and Chinese culture. As I recently read the book and thought back on my own experiences in China, I found myself nodding and saying "Yes, this is what it was like for me." Or, "Oh! I wish I would have realized that before."

'Studying in China' goes beyond traditional travel guides that focus primarily on short term tourists. This book delves more into the day to day living in China and offers additional cultural understanding. The book is comprehensive and will help study abroad students prepare mentally and practically for their journey ahead. It can also help study abroad advisors identify important topics to highlight in advising sessions and pre-departure meetings.

There are many helpful chapters. In particular, I enjoyed the sections on Geography, Before You Go Preparations, Being a Foreign Student in China, Daily Life, and Intercity Travel. Great detail went into each chapter's descriptions and analyses. It's impossible to grasp everything about a country and culture just by reading a book, but students will be grateful they've read this when they arrive in China and can more smoothly navigate their experience.

I know I would have felt more informed, empowered, and resourceful if I had read this before my year in China. Students would be doing themselves a great favor by reading this book before going abroad.

No politics, just a review...

I'll preface this by saying I don't know ANYTHING about the politics behind Mr. Wiley and Mr. Cabales... I'll just stick to reviewing the book, thank you.

This book attempts to be an brief overview on the basic history, concepts, and techniques of Cabales Serrada Escrima. Without knowing anything about Escrima as a whole, I'd say that it looked good to me.

The first two chapters are on the overall history of escrima and the specific developement of CSE, suggesting that the system may have it's roots in India and noting that Spanish sword-and-dagger techniques had a significant influence on the overall style. The third chapter very briefly covers superstitions/ spiritual beliefs prevalent in the Phillipines and their relavence to CSE, though I'm sure entire volumes could be written on that subject. The fourth chapter, "Psychological Attributes", has a few paragraphs on awareness, motivation, imagery, and emotional control; while dealing specifically with escrima, I'm sure that they'd be useful to any martial artist. The following chapter covers some pretty intangible concepts, such as "innovation is your best teacher" and "mastery requires dedication", and seeks to bring together both the artistic and scientific qualities of escrima. Like the preceeding chapters, I just don't feel like this one was long enough.

Chapter Six starts into the physical aspects of Escrima, covering the arsenal (both anatomical weapons and the blunt and edged weapons). Mr. Wiley explains that the system uses a slightly shorter stick than some other escrima systems, and that the anatomical weapons and movements should mirror the armed weapons and their tactics. Chapter Seven covers the foundation of the system, as far as movements and posturing. In this chapter, there is the usual mix of stance and salutation presented, but also footwork, fundamental distance concepts, basic ways of striking, and the use of the "alive" (non-weapon) hand.

Starting with Chapter Eight, we are presented with the twelve basic attack angles (mostly with a single-stick, but also with stick-and-dagger), basic defenses against strikes along those angles, unarmed defenses (basic blocks, jointlocks, and "bodylocks" or takedowns), and disarms vs. the single-stick.

My complaints? Not many. It's clearly a book simply on basics (one block for one angle, one disarm per angle, no empty-hand strikes illustrated), and I was disappointed there wasn't more to it. And far be it from me to criticise something I'm not particularly learned at, but we're not actually getting twelve "angles" here, as some of the attacks presented follow the same "flight paths" of others, or are simply stick-dagger combination strikes. The fact that the possition of the wrist in some of the strikes looks weak lends some credence to the suggestion that the author isn't an athority in the CSE system, but again, what do I know? And as I said, I don't think there was enough substance to the cultural, philosophical, and mental chapters to really do any system justice

Overall, though, I'd say the book serves as a good intro to escrima and basic stickfighting. The pictures are clear and the writting, while not very detailed or in-depth, is understandible and easy to get through. I'm glad I spent money on it.

Mark Wiley's first version book on Cabales Serrada Eskrima

Mark Wiley is to be congratulated/encouraged for at least writing about this art of which there wasn't much info around. Mark does make some mistakes when he shows the basic counter routines, specially with the check hand sequence. In some photos every position is incorrect. The story about Guro Cabales and his anecdotes also is not really correct. Yet, I will keep the book as an important source of some information and a promising presentation. The next version is supposed to be out in coming months. Initially, in order to prepare for this story, Mark should have spent some time training in Stockton with Serrada's top Guros. He did not allow them to contribute to the book. This next version "Secrets of Cabales Serrada Eskrima" is supposed to ammend all mistakes.

A wonderful introduction to Cabales Serrada Escrima!

The foreword of the book was personally written by Grandmaster Angel Cabales who tells why he personally chose Mark Wiley to present his art to the public. As it clearly stated in the book, Grandmaster Angel Cabales read and approved the manuscript before his unfortunate death in 1991.
In this introductory book, Mr. Wiley purposely exaggerated the movements and distance of this short range fighting style to help the photographer and give the reader a clearer view of how the techniques are performed. Basic concepts and techinques were explained, but as with any martial arts book, it was never intended to be used as a means to learn the art without a qualified instructor. It is also admirable that Mr. Wiley focused on presenting the art form of Grandmaster Angel Cabales and did not digress into tales of his training that do nothing more than boost his own image like so many other martial arts authors do.
The author's qualifications to teach, write about, and demonstrate this art are impeccable. Mark Wiley received his Master's Degree (Pangulong Guro) in Cabales Serrada Escrima in March of 1990 by Grandmaster Angel Cabales. Mark Wiley has written for and edited numerous martial arts publications and regularly travels to the Philippines as well as other parts of Asia to do research on and continue his study of the martial arts.
