About the Author
Stephen F. Kaufman, Hanshi, 10th Dan, is the holder of the highest title and rank attainable in the martial arts. His martial system, Hebi-ryu ("School of the Snake"), is recognized as one of the most effective martial methods in the world. A career spanning close to 60 years began in Okinawa in the 1950's. He's acknowledged as the "founding father" of American karate and has received countless awards and honors, including an induction into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame as Author of the Year in 2011.

It's an interpretation, not a translation.

Like the title of the book says, it's an interpretation, which is simply a summary of someone's understanding of the book, not the book itself. If you've read a decent translation of the Art of War, this might be worth looking into in order to get someone else's opinion on such an old text, but if you haven't, get a translation first. This will only confuse you otherwise.

The reason I changed my rating to two stars is because I think that Stephen should make a point in the beginning on the difference between an interpretation and a translation, so people really know what they're getting.

If you are looking to get your hands on a translation of the Art of War, go for Lionel Giles translation. The two things that really make it great are the fact that it contains two sections(one with and one without commentary), and the translations themselves seem to be very well preserved.

A martial artist view of the art of war

I have read a translation of the art of war in the past by another author and found this version relatively easy to read. It is an interpretation written by a martial artist with over 60 years experience . It is basically a book discussing war strategy and may only interest those with those interest in mind. I found it easy to read and follow. I think most of us, involved with martial arts, will read atleast one of the many interpretations of " Sun Tzu 's Art of War " at some point in our journey. This version would be a good one to read ( since it is written by a martial artist) than many of the others.

"The definitive interpretation"

Being familiar with Kaufman's presentation of the Book of five Rings available from the same publisher this version of Sun Tzu is a good English language translation. Keep in mind that Kaufman offers these works from a decidedly modern perspective and in an extremely pragmatic fashion. Devoid of footnotes and references save for the brief prefaces Mr. Kaufman provides them as serious study guides nonetheless. Highly recommended Reading for strategy enthusiasts.

Cheap reprint of a classic book

This is a crummy reprint of a wonderful classic children's book. First of all, there is no hole in the book, which spoils the novelty. Second, the original colors are missing, as the pictures are all printed in black-and-white. Third, the pages are printed on the wrong sides, so the text you read on any given page doesn't correspond to the picture on the facing page! If you remember reading The Hole Book as a child, as I do, you will be tremendously disappointed by this reprint.

Excellent. It sticks with you for decades.

Of all of the books that I read when I was a child, this is the only one that I truly never forget. I have captivated the attention of my friends and their children by reciting some of the best verses. The rhyme and meter is exquisite, providing an almost musical theme through each episode. The vocabulary is perfect for young people and fun for adults. It utilizes advanced words, while not burying their meaning from beginning readers. The characters lend themselves to creative new voices for each reader to explore. This book has more in common with a glossy gardening magazine than a book of either oriental style landscaping or zen philosophy. There's lots of pretty pictures (which you may find inspirational) but the advice in the text if fairly shallow. The connection to zen is a bit nebulous... and seems to exist mostly to add some sort of deeper legitamacy to the book.

After reading this as a library book I wanted it in my personal library. A Japanese garden is not my goal - a serene and calm landscape is. I found inspiration and sound principles to work with in ZEN IN MY GARDEN. A pleasure to read.

Kindergarten-Grade 4—Some of these 13 stories have been widely retold, such as "The Crane's Gratitude" from Japan and "Liang and His Magic Brush" from China. Others have variations told in other cultures, such as "How the Sea Became Salty." Most of the selections are six to eight pages in length. Yee's watercolor illustrations add lushness as well as humor in all the right places. The final story, from Thailand, "The Lucky Farmer Becomes King," is the longest in the collection at 15 pages. There is a bit of gore when the farmer's wife kills a bear—she is shown holding a bloody knife, standing over the prone animal. The volume includes a brief glossary, but lacks source notes. David Conger studied electrical engineering and Japanese at Brigham Young University. He became interested in Asian history and folklore while living in Japan for two years.

Marian Davies Toth's work has achieved national recognition in the United States. While living in Thailand, she taught creative writing at the International School in Bangkok.

Kay Lyons has lived in Malaysia for over thirty years. She is the author of Malaysian Children's Favourite Stories.

Joan Suyenaga, grew up with Japanese Children's Favorite Stories, the first title in this popular series. She has been writing, translating and editing for the past twenty years in Indonesia.

Requires a little too much interpretation to see the results

I have recently been trying to add new books to my craft book collection, and since I enjoy doing origami and I've recently been getting into handmade books, I thought I'd expand my library of origami books to provide myself with ideas for page elements and cover decorations. I have been designing a large "first book" for the two year old son of one of my coworkers. Tammi and I have known one another for over a decade now, having met while we both worked on the ICU ward in our hospital. We now work on the recovery ward together. She and her husband were blessed with a child during their thirties, and no one could be a more enthusiastic Mom than she. An interactive book that she could read with her son seemed just the thing, and origami forms to illustrate it seemed a splendid and simple way to go about the project.

Although I have several books in my library that include origami plants and animals they are a little on the old side (some dating to the 1960s), so I decided I'd see what new had been published. I selected three origami kits out of curiosity: Origami Made Easy by Irmagard Kneissler, Origami Jungle by Michael G. LaFosse, and The Great Origami Book and Kit, by Zülal Aytüre-Scheele.

First let it be said that I'm all for creating innovative and attractive ways for involving more people in the fun and creativity of origami. I've done paper folding and paper crafts for almost 30 years now, and I'm still learning about the art. Kits make sense in that they provide the beginner with everything they require at a known price. One doesn't purchase a reasonable book and discover there are a dozen other things one requires that all cost a fortune. It allows the novice to pick up a kit, try a few projects and decide whether this is a hobby they would enjoy enough to go out and find new materials to try and new more sophisticated books to study.

This said I also have to point out the caveat to this form of "boxed learning." In each situation, the packaging is designed to attract the purchaser. It tells what is included and stresses that it's all you need to do the projects, some of which are displayed on the package itself. What it doesn't do-short of opening it or having an open copy available- is let the purchaser look through the book itself to see if the illustrations appear too confusing to follow, or if the projects are useful and interesting enough to bother with. Furthermore, the choice of papers included is at the whim of the designer, rather than at the discretion of the novice artist. While none of these kits is particularly expensive, I felt that the drawbacks were not negligible. Two of the three kits were deceptively large but consisted mostly of packaging designed to attract attention.

Of the three books, I found the Aytüre-Scheele the most useful for my specific project. It contained the most interesting flowers and the most recognizable animals. It also contained patterns for buildings. While a little less diverse, the Kneissler book had patterns for a cat and an owl that were quite charming, and designs for masks that were stunning (I could see doing these in large pieces of handmade paper or expensive craft paper to hang on a living room wall). The LaFosse jungle animals were a little disappointing, because they often required quite of bit of interpretation to see the animal in the folded product. Of all of them I was most impressed with the Butterfly in Book One and the Tortoise and the Arrow Frog in Book Two.

On the whole, I think I'd suggest finding a book on origami and paging through it to see if the designs appeal. You might pay even more for a good book of designs than for the kit, but you'd know that the patterns were ones you would really like to try. You will also get an idea of how easy or difficult the designer's method of illustrating the folds is to understand. You can start out folding plain old xerox paper then purchase more colorful-and expensive-papers at a local craft shop when you gain more experience.

Product was fine, shipped fine but I just did not care ...

Product was fine, shipped fine but I just did not care for the book. I have " The Hole Book" and this is just an ever so slight variation of that idea. Much like watching two movies where just the characters names have been changed but everything else is the same. I expected more changes, and maybe even improvements.

incredibly entertaining artwork!

I read this book to my children when they were small in 1985. We had checked it out from the public library. I laughed so hard at not only the
story, but the expressions on the apartment
dwellers faces as the rocket continued to burst
its' way up through their apartments on its' trip
out the top of the building! I have been searching for my own copy ever since, and am
excited to have found it at Amazon.com. It will
be a welcome addition to my own library, and I will certainly be sharing it later with my three little
grand-daughters. I'm already laughing in anticipation of its arrival in the mail!
