About the Author
Ron Iverson first visited China in 1984 as the personal representative of the Mayor of Chicago as part of a Sister Cities program. For the past 30 years he has continued to regularly visit China and has founded joint business ventures with Chinese partners and taught Business Strategy at Tongji University in Shanghai. He also personally arranged the first ever exhibition of Forbidden City artifacts from the Palace Museum in Beijing to tour the US. Early in his visits to China, Iverson discovered The Three Kingdoms and came to realize the enormous cultural significance the Chinese people place in the book. Believing that one needed to be familiar with the principles revealed in the book in order to find business or political success in China, and being dissatisfied with existing translations, Iverson decided to fund and edit a new translation aimed towards delivering the thrill of a contemporary novel while imparting understanding of a key aspect of Chinese culture.

Yu Sumei is a professor of English at East China Normal University. She has translated several English language books into Chinese and is the first native Chinese speaker to translate The Three Kingdoms into English. She invested a total of two years into working on this new translation of The Three Kingdoms, spending the time on sabbatical in New York with her daughter, who typed the translation out as she completed it.

Vol. 3 provides an exciting conclusion to the preceding volumes. In Volumes 1 and 2, Zhuge Liang has masterminded, with clever maneuvers, victory at the Battle of Red Cliff against Cao Coa and then gone on to capture important cities, thus vastly increasing Liu Bei’s military power with additional soldiers and control of wealthy cities and provinces.
Liu Bei dies in Vol. 3 leaving control of his kingdom to his son Liu Shan. Cao Cao, seeks to take advantage of Liu Bei’s death and inexperience of Liu Shan. Cao Cao comes up with a cunning scheme to attack Liu Shan’s kingdom from five directions. I was anxious to read how Zhuge Liang was going to deal with this new threat. However he reclused himself in his hut and would not come out. Finally after 3 days, Liu Shan goes to Zhuge Liang’s hut to hear what plans he has in mind. Zhuge Liang has brilliant plans to thwart each of the five attacks. He will himself lead the attack again the fierce Man tribes. In his fight against the Mans, after the battle he releases their leader on the faith of his good word that they will not fight again. This happens six times that Zhuge Liang battles and has victory over the Mans, each time capturing the leader and releasing him. After the seventh time, Zhuge Liang refuses to even see the leader of the Mans and has his assistant release him. At this, the leader of the Mans was so humiliated that he agreed to have a peace alliance with Liu Shan and have peaceful cooperation in the future.
The Three Kingdoms story is truly one of the great classics of literature. This translation is easy reading. The footnotes were not only helpful, but at those special key locations in the writing, the footnotes at the bottom of the page made the flow of the story more meaningful.

I love the prints, the paper itself is like a thick magazine page and has a white core so any hard crease and it will show through.

Does not have folding instructions for those shown on the cover.

Paper is glossy and thick, yet easy to fold. Disappointed to discover folding instructions are identical to the instructions in the "Floating Worlds" booklet. I was hoping it would have included folding instructions for the flower and butterfly as shown on the cover, which sadly it did not. The included instructions had: crane, star box, kimono, peacock, balloon and swan.

About the Author
Caroline Self has studied Asian brush painting for 30 years. She holds a degree in art from UC Berkeley and a master's degree in art education and sculpture from San Diego State University. She has taught brush painting for over twenty-five years, and has studied traditional brush painting with teachers in Japan, China and Taiwan.

Susan Self studied art in college and on trips to Europe and Asia, often accompanying her mother. She has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from UC San Diego.

No matter what age or skill level you have achieved, you will not be disappointed. From the graceful beauty of the artwork within to each carefully worded, easily understood step that guides, this extraordinary journey is a well worth anyone's time. This book peels back the layers, revealing the soul of this elegant art and its tools. By understanding the philosophy, point of view, and choice of tools, I know that I will never view another piece of Chinese brush painting in any museum the same way. This book has opened the door for me to not only learn to create, but forever appreciate this ancient art form in all its elegant grace, beauty, and meaning.

Chinese Brush Painting is not well known by western artists. This book gives the new reader an exceptional grounding in the theroy and practice of a painting style that combines delicacy and spirtual context seldom found in western art forms. The authors present a wide variety of illustrations and work practice to discover the depth of methodology and meaning in this thousand year old art style.

Chinese brush art is a special way of painting that uses ink, paper and imagination to create art, and beginners now have access to this thousand-year-old art form through a step-by-step guide that closely follows traditional Chinese methods. From simple materials painting traditional subjects with imagination, this is an excellent starting point recommended for any library where introductory painting in general is of interest, and Chinese art in particular is a focus.

Large watercolor paintings with informative captions break up the text, and topics frequently shift, making this one ideal for browsers. However, complicated points are overly simplified. For instance, the text claims that Taiwan was originally part of China and implies that it didn't separate until 1949, which ignores Taiwan's complicated colonial history and that it was ruled by Japan from 1895 to 1945. Making the recipes kid-friendly results in loss of authenticity for many, such as one for mooncakes (which ends up being a jelly-filled crescent roll). About the Author
Allison Branscombe is an avid traveler, researcher and writer. After adopting two children from China, she took a keen interest in learning about the country in order to help her children learn about their heritage. Her interest grew as she became a founding board member of Families with Children from China in Northern California, helping to organize Mandarin playgroups and other cultural and educational learning opportunities. As a board member of the Sacramento Chinese Culture Foundation, and a founding organizer for Sacramento's Chinatown Mall Culture Fair, she developed arts, crafts, and other instructional activities for children. Allison and her family have traveled extensively in China. She resides in California.

Lin Wang loved to draw and paint as a child and started art training at a very young age. She couldn't imagine herself doing anything other than painting when she grew up. "All About China" has it all

"All About China" has it all - a vision of what living in China is like, filled with crafts, illustrations and information that will appeal to kids. My daughter loved the recipes. This is an excellent book for all kids, but especially for children adopted from China as it celebrates the culture, history and uniqueness of China in a lovely and highly accessible way. Highest recommendation!

What a beautiful book Allison Branscombe has produced

What a beautiful book Allison Branscombe has produced! She has covered so many worthwhile subjects that would be of interest to children and adults alike. The illustrations are beyond beautiful. Lin Wang is such a talented artist! I can't imagine the number of hours it took to produce such a wonderful volume. I recommend this to any child who loves learning about other children and other cultures. China really comes alive in all the words, illustrations, games, crafts, and all the other activities that foster learning by seeing and doing. This kind of knowledge engenders a deep appreciation and love of the chinese culture. There is no better way to do away with prejudice and ignorance. There is no better way to appreciate the chinese way of life than to understand its history, art, food, customs and folklore. This book leads the reader to do all of this through a most magnificent and enriching journey.

Great job......All About China!

Allison Branscombe, author, and illustrator Lin Wang have produced a book that is at once engaging, colorful and educational without preaching what the reader must learn. Written for children and young adults, so much of the content was enlightening for me as an adult! The subjects of religion, culture, traditions, food, the arts, dynasties and more were discussed and illustrated in such a way that helped the reader comprehend the country of China and its people.

“All About China: Stories, Songs, Crafts and More for Kids” should be in every classroom and home for it opens our eyes to a distant culture made accessible by Allison and Lin. Brava ------ Great job!

Disappointed in the layout. Turkish language printed way too small to see while english is normal size

This book has really great useful phrases. But the turkish print or font is so small and cant even be zoomed in. It seems like it was a cut and paste job on the part of the printers or something. Im very disappointed that i cant use this book because it would have improved my turkish a lot

Turkish for informal & intimate situations

Making Out in Turkish is a fun little phrase book that gives you some phrases that most books don't cover (at least I certainly don't recall books like Berlitz covering talk about avoiding pregnancy). It is more for getting to know people in less formal situations, and of course more intimate situations and as such probably isn't the only phrase book that you want to have. However if you are looking to spend any time speaking Turkish outside of business situations I would say that this is a good book to have.

Not to say that this book doesn't cover the basics of the language any less then other `pocket' sized books, it just has a different focus, it doesn't cover things that say a person there on business would use, like getting a taxi or finding a bank. If you are going over to live for a time as an exchange student or something it would probably come in very handy. It has such phrases as - Don't talk like an idiot, I'm kidding, Cool, My mouth is on fire, how do you eat this? Can we still be friends?

A Handy Little Book

As a teacher at an international ESL school, I like to learn some phrases (greetings, farewells,etc.) for each of the student languages represented in my class. This book is not for someone who wants to learn the Turkish language in depth, nor for those who want to learn the grammar or structure. It is ideal, though, for one with the same goals that I had and also for a traveler to Turkey. In both cases your efforts will be appreciated by the Turks with whom you are speaking.

About the Author
Kafu Nagai (1879-1959), one of the best known and most popular of Japanese novelists during the first half of the twentieth century, had a versatile career as newspaper reporter, bank clerk, university teacher, playwright, essayist, diarist, and lecturer on woodblock prints. His works are noted for their depictions of life in early twentieth-century Tokyo, especially among geisha, prostitutes, cabaret dancers, and other inhabitants of the city's lively entertainment districts.

Kurt Meissner, a German businessman and an enthusiastic admirer of Japanese culture, has resided in Japan almost continuously since 1906. He has translated numerous Japanese literary works into his native language and is well known for his promotion of Japanese-German cultural relations. Mr. Meissner was a friend of novelist Nagai. His collaborator, Ralph Friedrich, a resident of Japan since 1946, has translated two Japanese childrenAEs books into English and is the author of a collection of poetry.

Mean girls

Apparently catty girls fighting over a popular guy knows neither the boundaries of time nor place nor social status. "Geisha in Rivalry" could just as easily be a hot new teen film, starring Lindsay Lohan as the naive new girl being manipulated and preyed upon by the more cynical seniors. Even when set against the elegance of the flower and willow world, these women of the arts are still just ordinary people inside, with hopes and ambitions and disappointments just like everyone else.

And that really is the charm of this book. The geisha here are just allowed to be people, and interact in a regular old-fashioned love/rival story, rather than serving as some great symbol of refined and mysterious Japan. There is almost no emphasis put on the job of the geisha, the endless hours of training, the various roles in the geisha house and the extravagance of rare mockingbird-poop make-up that gives them a special sheen. Instead, they are just human beings doing a job, not all of them happy with it, not all of them good at it, but all of them determined to make some go at happiness, by hook or by crook. Author Kafu Nagai has put forth a story that is far more Jane Austen than Kawabata Yasunari, more light-hearted romp than heavy-hitting classic.

The basic story has Komayo arriving on the Tokyo Shimbashi geisha scene, returning after a short break when she was married are taken to the countryside. Her husband dead and her marriage over, she returns to the only work she knows. Unknowingly stealing a client from another geisha, the established and imperious Rikiji, she sets herself in a position of retaliation, and the gears start slowly working against her. Others move about the scene, like Hanasuke, the second-place girl content to be in the background but still looking after her own interests, or the slutty Ranka about whom it is gossiped that she is little more than a prostitute painted like a geisha but is still very popular with the male customers. The prize for all involved is the handsome and popular actor Segawa, a somewhat fickle man who is content to watch the game unfold and see who emerges the winner.

The translation of "Geisha in Rivalry" is a little outdated, but does a great job of keeping the active and fun spirit of the original language. A few odd choices were made, like literally translating "maiko" as "dancing girl" instead of leaving it as it is or using the more common "apprentice geisha", but none of this interferes with the story. A short book at a little over 200 pages, it is still a great read and a refreshing perspective for anyone wanting to read about geisha, or just get involved in a fun catty story of a couple of pretty gals maneuvering for the top guy.

an old translation revisited

Just some background: This translation was first published in 1963. No doubt it has been re-issued to cash in on the fad for anything relating to geisha. A better (but partial) translation, along with a biography of the author and other translations of his works, appears in Edward Seidensticker's "Kafu the Scribbler" (pub. 1965 and still available), and was reprinted in 1971 in "A Strange Tale from East of the River, and Other Stories" (out of print).

Grief must lie at the heart of relationships between men and women

Kafû Nagai's novels are a real living source of the `water trade', the shady world of the geisha quarter in Tokyo with its `high' and `low' houses, its bosses and accountants, its madams and `servants'.

His picture of the trade is melancholic. He sees through the white masks and the kimono glitter of the geisha professionals: `Once you became a geisha, no matter what you do, it's hopeless.'
Nearly all the geishas in Kafû's novels (all translated in French) chose this profession out of economic necessity (if they were not sold by their parents), as a means of survival.
The studies are extremely hard and expensive. They are financed by `investors' who want their money back as quick as possible. Geishas are saddled with huge amounts of debt before they can earn a living.
Therefore, they search desperately for a rich danna (protector) or outright for a husband, who can reimburse their debt and set them free. The rivalry for that kind of persons is fierce and without pity. It is a world where the `human touch' is a real exception.
But, for Kafû, it is the same the other way round: `People are saying that what's more important than her good looks is her big dowry.'

Kafû Nagai's novels excel by their subtle, impressionistic, colorful picture of a harsh profession, by his in depth search for the human faces behind the varnish and by their subdued atmosphere.

About the Author
Dr. Sokyo Ono was a professor at Kokugakuin Daigaku, a Shinto university in Tokyo, and has lectured for the National Association of Shinto Shrines. He also served as Executive Director of the International Institute for the Study of Religions and the Japan Religious Cooperative Council

William Woodard directed the research unit of the Religious and Cultural Resources Division, Civil Information and Education Section, SCAP from 1946 to 1952.

It has its flaws, but its well worth a read

This is perhaps the best known (and most widely available)introductory treatise of the Shinto religion. While Ono's The Kami Way certainly deserves its notoriety, those who wish a deeper philosophical coverage of this poorly understood religion will be a bit disappointed, for Dr. Ono really just scratches the surface and seldom goes beyond the topics of shrine architecture, ceremonial trappings, and local and national shrine administration. The mythology/cosmology of Shinto is briefly addressed, and I believe that the average western reader will find the nature of Shinto even more perplexing after reading this book for that very reason: Ono calls Shinto "a religion without theology", but no religion is without theology, regardless of how ancient it is (for example, I would have found a few examples of instances of local nature spirits being transformed into Buddhist saints most informative). For those totally unfamiliar with Shinto, I will make this rough comparison: imagin if the ancient European pagan religions had survived the Christian domination of the late Middle Ages and continued to exist in organized forms, occasionally incorporating Christian concepts into their own respective worldviews and religious ceremonies (as Shinto did to a limited extent with the imported Buddhist religion). Despite its scant coverage of actual religious matters, The Kami Way lucidly describes the mundane matters of this faith's temporal administration (and provides much coverage of shrine conditions and inter-provincial/national relations, with an emphasis on comparison between standards before and after World War Two). I highly reccommend this book as an introduction for the curious.

An introduction to the un-religion

Originally published in 1960 as "Bulletin #8" from the government-sponsored International Institute for the Study of Religions, "Shinto: The Kami Way" was written to serve as an English-language introduction to Japan's native religion. While somewhat dated in use of language and pictures, the fact that the book is still in print more than fifty years later says that author Ono Sokyo did a good job of it.

And Ono did do a good job. He stayed mostly on the surface, discussed the establishment of shrines, who pays for them and what their role is, who the priests are and what their role is, what are some of the important shrines and architectural style. He writes about the significance of certain objects like the shimenawa rope you see at many shrines, or the costumes of the priests and shrine maidens. He sheds some light on some of the rituals, on the history of Shinto through WWII and after, and the role of Shinto in the home and in the community. This is very much a "nuts and bolts" guide to the world of Shinto.

For the rest, for the nature of kami and the beliefs of Shinto, he simply says:

"It is impossible to make explicit and clear what that which fundamentally by its very nature is vague."

This is the aspect that many Westerners find so mystifying about Shinto. It falls too far outside what they think of as "religion." There are no prophets or holy men, no bible or salvation, no afterlife, no forbidden fruits, no code of moral conduct. Shinto is a life-affirming religion, and all things associated with life; sex, pain, indulgence, lust, joy, abandon; are good. Getting completely drunk and stuffing yourself like a pig on expensive treats is one of the most holy ways to honor the spirits. There is no concept of sin; the most one can be is dirty (the kami like things clean).

Shinto is also not so much a system of beliefs as an organization of rituals and traditions. Even reading some of the reviews for this book, it is clear how difficult a concept this is for people to grasp. One reviewer wanted to see a gallery of images of kami, even though Ono makes it explicit that kami have no form and are never depicted in art. Another reviewer insists that there MUST be a doctrine and theology for Shinto, and somehow Ono didn't include it in his book. But Ono is right. No such thing exists.

In truth, as Ono writes, Shinto is more of a collection of rituals, traditions and superstitions bound up in a very loose belief system. One cannot say "I am Shinto" in the way you would say "I am Buddhist" or "I am Catholic." That would be like saying "I am Christmas" because you put up a tree every year. In fact, most Japanese people have never even heard the word Shinto, and if you told them they were being religious just because they had a shrine at home and participated in the local festivals, they would just laugh at you. These activities are just part of daily life, part of being Japanese. And that is Shinto.

Because Shinto is something you do, not something you think about. Ono puts this succinctly in saying "Shinto is caught, and not taught" and "the strength of Shinto is in its emphasis on sensory experience derived from mystic rites and natural phenomenon rather than on theological discourse."

With this I could not agree with Ono more. As part of my Master's Degree, I have read many books and wrote many papers on Shinto, and no amount of study can really tell you what Shinto is. I would say that I have a strong understanding of the native religion of Japan, but this was gained through experience, through shouldering the heavy mikoshi as we took the local kami on a tour through the town, or burning under giant flaming torches in order to please a local fire kami, or suffering through the ordeal that is the Naked Man Festival from which not everyone comes out alive.

A book like Ono's is never going to be able to truly show you what Shinto is, any more than a book on sushi could really tell you what uni tastes like. They can talk about the history, the cultivation, the preparation, but when it comes to flavor you are really just going to have to try it for yourself.
