About the Author
Born in 1978, Sam Ita grew up in a small town near the Canadian border. His fascination with paper airplanes began at an early age when he attended a paper airplane contest held at the Kingdome in Seattle, WA. From the stands, thousands of contestants would throw airplanes with the goal of landing theirs closest to the center of a prize target. Hardcore competitors purchased stacks of paper and brought homemade launchers, and other tools. Sam found himself woefully ill-prepared, with only half a dozen sheets to fold. Sam watched his attempts fail one after the other, the planes not even clearing the stands below. Regardless of the outcome, the activity was incredibly fun, and Sam was hooked for life. He went on to study graphic design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating, Sam answered a classified ad, which led to his first paper engineering job. Sam now works for master paper engineer and acclaimed children's book creator, Robert Sabuta.

About the Author
Jim Algie has visited more than 50 provinces in Thailand in over nearly two decades of living there. In travel experiences he has run the gamut from scuba-diving and rock-climbing to kayaking off the coast of Krabi (and nearly drowning), learning how to hunt for red ant egg nests (a delicacy in the northeast), and trawling with Thai-Muslim fishermen down south. These experiences underlie many of the stories and guidebooks he has written, as well as his nonfiction collection of features about the country's stranger side, Bizarre Thailand: Tales of Crime, Sex and Black Magic. For the past decade he has been daylighting as the editor of some of the country's top travel magazines and working on a freelance basis with the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Small Book - Big Info

I have just recently returned from Thailand where using the Thailand Tuttle Travel Pack by Jim Algie was invaluable. Not only does it list all the important to do activities, it also has a full map of Thailand. The full map proved to be very valuable while traveling the country side. It also it a lot easier to haul around. The missing restaurant reviews compared to the more popular Lonely Planet was no loss. We had both books and the few times we used Lonely Planet for a place to eat I was left wanting for quality. The author lives in Thailand and is continually learning more about the country and I hope he will share that info in a new future book.

Tiny Guidebook Packs a Big Punch

I love tiny guidebooks, not so much for their portability, but because only someone who knows a place very well is able to write one. Tiny guidebooks are edited carefully before they go to a publisher for grooming. Anybody can (and frequently does) write a huge, encyclopedic guide that throws in everything that Wikipedia has to offer on the subject. It takes real knowledge and love to put a country into a hundred pages or so, and to make that hundred pages worth reading.

My criteria for a guidebook is to give me something I never knew before and different glances at places I have seen myself, making me want to go back and see it all. I want a conversation with the author as I read--"I didn't know that" or "Damn, I missed that part" or "Yes, wasn't that fabulous?"

I had precisely this conversation with my friend Jim Algie, as I read his concise and delightful guide to a country we both love very much. (And yes, he is my friend--which means if I disagreed with him, I would be vociferous, vocal, and visible. That's what writers do to and for each other when they are friends.)

Jim has lived in Thailand for twenty years or so, and as a journalist he's seen as much as anybody and more than most. If there was anyone I'd be happy to carry with me on my own solitary travels, he's the man--and now I can.

Bangkok is where the journey begins, and on the first page, I find myself cursing softly. "I know I didn't see all 178 Ramayana murals at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha--gotta go back." And that's a lot like making a New Yorker want to go to the Empire State Building more than once--almost impossible to do. Then there's what to expect at a Thai boxing match, which is one of my favorite art forms--it's over $30 for a foreigner's ticket now, but this book reminds me why I should pay up and go. This is followed by how and where and why to take a canal boat ride, including a trip to an island of Mon potters which is one of the few places near Bangkok where cars do not intrude. And then there's the wonderful culinary carnival of Soi 38 on Sukumvit Road--I've never been there and am now asking myself why not.

And that is a mere tiny portion of the book's first twenty pages--and only Bangkok. Every sentence of this guide holds information that will make a trip to Thailand extraordinary--from the historic ruins of Sukhothai to a live SWAT team taking on terrorists in the Hollywood Action Show at Dream World on the outskirts of Bangkok to the natural wonders of Kaeng Krachan National Park in the southern tip of Central Thailand to an evening cruise on the Mekong. Read carefully and use a highlighter; there isn't a wasted word in this guidebook.

Phuket is a place I've never gone, since I was sure it's a high-roller's glitzy destination but now I know there's a "Robinson Crusoe kind of experience' waiting for me at Mai Khao Bay. Chiang Mai makes me yawn--but how can I resist a massage at the Chiang Mai Women's Prison Massage Center? Then there's a dude ranch near Khorat, Pensuk Great Western, and "a green saltwater lake walled in by limestone ramparts on Ko Mae Ko" in Angthong National Marine Park. Time to go...

The travel facts at the end of the book are invaluable--need a SIM card? Go to 7-11. Need an ambulance? Call 191. Making a phone call? Don't forget to add 02. Medical tourist? Go to [...]

My one caveat is that the recommended hotels and restaurants are more of a splurge than my travel budget usually allows but even so--what's a trip without a splurge? Thanks to Jim Algie and the Tuttle Travel Pack Thailand, now I have a wide choice of indulgences--and a whole new set of reasons to return to a country that I thought I knew.

An expat's inside guide

Thailand has grown into a tourist Behemoth over the years, and it's hot spots fluctuate faster than the exchange rate of the Somali Shilling. Leave it to expat author Jim Algie to pick out (in the first chapter alone) 20 hot spots that are in fact mainstays of the country, and they will probably still be around even if you visit a few years from now. From where to go in Bangkok, to a day by day (and night by night)'how to' on exploring Phuket, and other islands, this is a great guide book for the family friendly side of Thailand. Admittedly, I have been coming to Thailand for over a decade and there were many restaurants and things to do I had never heard of or even thought of before. This guidebook is not geared towards the average backpacker on a budget--but it will show you how to survive in style. You will find where the best hotels and restaurants are, and a section on where to take the kids. So for a romantic couple or a family on holiday, this is probably your best guide. This book has plenty of local color like where to see the mummified monk, or where to eat with the locals. As well as eco-tours, temples, spa getaways, and five-star resorts (and a few mid-range ones), to Muay Thai boot-camps, and medical tourism--this small guide packs in a ton of useful info and humor to boot.
It is a quality, durable guide that I would expect from an outfit like Tuttle, and I can see getting many years use out of it. As a bonus, there is a full country map printed on quality paper that has detailed close-ups of Bangkok and many of the islands.
If you are new to Thailand and want to take in some of it's great wonders, follow this guide and it won't let you down. For some of the more seasoned travelers, there are plenty of new things that only an expat like Jim Algie would know about and can surprise even a jaded traveler like me. If I ever get married and go on a honeymoon, this will be the first book I take with me.

"GO Basics" Delivers!

"GO Basics" is the sophomore effort from the prolific Go writer Peter Shotwell. Following his comprehensive first book, "Go! More Than a Game", could not have been easy, but "GO Basics" delivers on its subtitle premise of "Concepts & Strategies for New Players". Of course, there are many Go primers available, but this book stands out due to the unique approach it takes to teaching the fundamentals of Go.

Most fundamentals-oriented books teach by using isolated 19x19 board examples. Such an approach may adequately demonstrate a concept but it often fails to provide the new player with an appreciation of the relationship of the concept to the entire game. "GO Basics" uses a total of 7 professional 9x9 games to teach the reader everything found in a complete game of Go.

The first game is half the book. It covers the opening game, including captures, ladders, nets, and tesuji; and the middle game with life & death, eyes, territorial play, running fights, sente, gote, ko, and seki. The end game is taught with another unique approach. First the beginner's play is reviewed by showing the reader what not to do. This is followed by a review of the professional's play in the endgame, which of course, is the right way to play. The last six games cover advanced concepts such as sacrifice, big kos, cross-cuts, hunting big groups, invasions and thinking territorially.

Finally, the makings of a 9x9 go set and the American Go Association CD-ROM's treasure trove of materials with its interactive playing program cements "GO Basics" position as a complete primer for beginners, young and old alike.

Look elsewhere for a beginning Go book

Is this book horrible because of Peter Shotwell? Is it horrible because of Tuttle Publishing? Or just a combination of both?

This is the second book I've read by Peter Shotwell, and the second time that I've been disappointed. Let me start by saying that I don't have any doubt that Peter Shotwell is a great Go player. But as a teacher of Go through a book, he's horrible.

I bought this book at the same time that I bought Beginning Go by Shotwell / Long, and Learn To Play Go - Volume 1 by Janice Kim / Jeong Soo-hyun. At the time I didn't notice that two of the books I had selected were by Shotwell. Without a doubt and by a mile, Learn to Play Go: A Master's Guide to the Ultimate Game (Volume I) (Learn to Play Go Series) is THE best beginning Go book that I've read. It makes the basics of the game understandable, and it presents them in a clear and concise manner that smoothly progresses at a gradual rate. It builds the game one brick at a time, and it doesn't leave you wondering by making too big of a leap forward, and the diagrams and excercises are easy to follow.

In Go Basics, I frequently found mistakes in the diagrams, or the diagrams were out of order, or the stones weren't numbered properly. I'm not sure if these errors are the fault of Shotwell or Tuttle Publishing, but in any case, shouldn't somebody be doing some proof reading? Especially in a Go book for beginners, if you don't understand the game to begin with, how can one be expected to decipher erroneous diagrams?

I was usually able to figure out the ideas that were trying to be presented, but it usually took a good amount of deciphering. All the material in this book could be presented in a manner that would make it much easier to understand, and require half the time to read, because you wouldn't have to spend so much time playing detective to try and figure out what the F this guy is talking about.

For a true beginner I would think that Shotwell's books would be more confusing than enlightening. Granted, if you had nothing else you could probably figure out what you needed to know from these books. But compared to other Go books for beginners that are out there, this one is muddy and confusing. I'm not a complete beginner when it comes to Go, my rank on KGS is currently 19 Kyu, but I decided to go back and read some basic books.

Another bothersome thing about Shotwell's books is that he's always trying to console you for not understanding the lofty principles he's trying to divulge to you. From chapter 11: "Don't feel embarrassed if this chapter requires a number of readings to understand the main threads of thought." The thing that bothers me is that most of the "threads of thought" that he speaks of, could be presented in a much clearer manner. And if they were, you wouldn't have to read the chapter more than once to understand them, and then Shotwell wouldn't have to console you.

Bottom Line

Peter Shotwell's books present Go concepts in a confusing and muddled manner. There are far better books out there that present the same material in clearer more understandable fashions. I recommend Janice Kim's Learn to Play Go: A Master's Guide to the Ultimate Game (Volume I) (Learn to Play Go Series). I have not read the other volumes of her books so I can't speak about them.

A great book for beginners to intermediates at Go

An excellent book for beginners to intermediates at Go. It focuses on the 9x9 board under the assumption that learning tactics, ideas and strategies on a smaller board will help kill bad habits before they start. It's very densely written, and I have to say that after the first few chapters I was lost, though that has more to do with the fact I'm an absolute beginner than anything else.

It's necessary to have a board or two on hand to work out the exercises in the book, though if you're not willing to work out the problems without skipping to the answers, then why are you taking up Go? It'll take multiple read-throughs to grasp the book. I certainly haven't gotten a handle on all of it, but I regard that as a plus. It also comes with a nifty CD packed with goodies that's worth the price of the book alone.

As for drawbacks, there are certain small errors in the book a little more careful editing could have fixed, and despite Shotwell's assertion that the lessons contained therein are easily extendable to the 19x19 game, a little more hand-holding from the 9x9 game to the larger board would be good for rank beginners like myself, since it's somewhat difficult and time consuming to completely master the 9x9 lessons before engaging more seasoned players who prefer the full board. All in all, a definite recommendation.

Lori O'Connell Sensei holds a 5th degree black belt and full instructor's license in Can-Ryu Jiu-jitsu, and has trained in martial arts for over 20 years and taught martial arts for 17 years in Canada and abroad. Lori currently runs her own Jiu-jitsu dojo, operating in the greater Vancouver area in Canada since 2006. She also teaches local women's self-defense programs, personal safety & awareness programs and corporate self-defense seminars. Fantastic Presentation of Solid Techniques

I've long been a fan of grappling and the ground "game" but have never really been exposed to self-defense techniques for a ground-scenario. This is a great book that includes a lot of excellent photos on the topic. Everything is very easy to understand and presented with context. The contextual information really makes the difference as it take the book from being more than just a technical manual and into something far more relevant to "real life"

The DVD is a nice addition as well. Great book. Would recommend to anyone who does martial arts or is interested in self-defense.

Solid Foundation From Which to Begin

I am always skeptical about any work that talks about: "when the fight goes to ground." The reality of that very scenario is as harsh as the outcome far removed from the contrived octagon with its myriad of rules of safety.

In LE incidents, it is usually how the multiple officers contain a single non-compliant suspect successfully, or how an LE is in a world of hurt and fighting for his or her very life against the worst case-scenario.

In combat it means the target has been terminated or combatants are attempting to kill one another by any and all means available, where the most vicious soul will prevail.

This book bridges a gap that needed filled, and O'Connell Sensei provided solid basics of the movements required, that are fundamental for survival, when one has been rendered to the ground, for whatever reason. Both the book and the DVD complement this intense learning experience.

Bathed in common sense and practicality I have not witnessed in a while, in this arena, the reader/viewer will gain the insights into what will assist one in managing the self with top notch motor skills while on the ground, seeking to prevail in less than ideal circumstances.

Some weaknesses do exist, in that getting back up on the feet was not overly stressed. Getting back up into a vertical posture, quickly and smoothly, is paramount to survival here. We are at our most vulnerable when on the ground without weapons. Yes, we must be able to manage our actions to protect ourselves when we are on the ground. But we must be able to get upright and mobile to prevail. While getting to base was shown, standing up from any grounded position was lacking. It is not as easy as people think--though simple, it can be hazardous, if the basics of this transition are not fully understood, and these fundamentals own nothing to do with what is found in athletic contests. It's aggressive and proactive even from our worst position.

The other weakness was, while the book and video were both meticulous in its instructional presentations of these solid basics, there was no real example of the fast and brutal, real time action that happens in this environment. It was all very slowed down, and this impedes the realization of what is really needed down here. The abruptness changes things--mentally and physically.

People needing to learn the applications also need to learn this abruptness and violence of how things unfold, otherwise they become much more subjected to personal panic of not knowing.

The applications are solid--100%--some of the best teaching presentations out there--simple, direct and economical in the execution of said basics. If one masters these and then can apply them under the dire duress of the brutality that is ground combat, one will finally understand this area of operation. But that is the catch, the brutality of this arena must be understood if one desires to arrive on the other side of prevailing.

Technically and for an instructional format with the book and DVD, this is a superbly accomplished item, very well done, indeed.

Great addition to my library

Excellent book, and great value for money. Lori provides great advice on using ground fighting skills in a self-defence context. All of the techniques are clearly explained and well illustrated with photographs, with tips for how to drill and practice the techniques - very useful for those with limited or no ground fighting experience. In addition to the technical content, there is also sound advice on legal implications and strategic considerations, which even those with a comprehensive competitive grappling background should find useful. The included DVD is a great bonus to help visualize the techniques. I am definitely recommending this book to my students.

About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist for decades, and is considered a leading authority and master of the art. An avid teacher, LaFosse co-founded the Origamido Studio, a learning center and design studio dedicated to the art of origami, and the only place in the world specializing in hand papermaking for the origami artist. LaFosse co-curated Origami Now!, a wildly popular, year-long exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Some instructions are wrong.

The Cardinal is impossible to make because the instructions are wrong. It shows the wrong images and the text is too vague by itself. The Cardinal, seemingly complicated, can not be made because of errors in the folding instructions. Exactly, the first five images that accompany the steps are shown again for steps 7-11.

As an adult that follows technical instructions and illustrations daily at their job, I'm not so sure that this book is easy to understand. It's hard to make-out exactly what the line-art flat illustrations are showing. That combined with actual errors in the instructions is frustrating. I was hoping to enjoy a paper Cardinal, but probably never will get to.

Hours of paper folding fun!

My 9 year old daughter loves this origami kit. She has been doing origami for several years, but most of the projects in this kit are easy enough for a beginner. What we like most about this kit is that the paper is colored specifically for each bird - red with black for a cardinal, yellow with green for a parrot, etc. Enough good quality, double sided paper included in the kit to make a bunch of each bird or for use with other projects. Great gift for kids interested in birds and/or origami.

About the Author
Marvin Gapultos is the author of the celebrated food blog, Burnt Lumpia, and was the founder of Los Angeles' first gourmet Filipino food truck, The Manila Machine. Because of his contemporary take on traditional Filipino food, The Manila Machine gained both a loyal following as well as critical acclaim, in just a short period of time. Using his knowledge of Filipino ingredients and flavors, Marvin not only developed the menu for his mobile restaurant, but he was also responsible for cooking the food. In fact, many of the menu items served from The Manila Machine originated on Marvin's blog. His singular passion and focus on the food of the Philippines has made him one of the leading voices on Filipino cooking. Marvin spends his time as a food and marketing writer. He lives with his wife and son in Southern California.

Like Mom's Cooking

Found this book at my local library and showed it to my Mom who came here from the Philippines in the early 1960's. Most of the recipes are those I grew up eating. My mom never writes down any of her recipes for filipino cooking. I had to learn by watching her cook throwing in a little this and that and mine never tasted quite the same as hers. My mom was surprised how similar these recipes were to her own and this book is my guide to practice with. The pictures are great and I can relate to the author's history! Affordable price--bought three to share with my Americanized cousins who crave simple and authentic Filipino dishes and want to make them.

Great addition to my collection

I frequent the Burnt Lumpia blog for delicious Filipino recipes so when Marvin finally came out with a cookbook, I quickly placed it on pre-order. Great authentic recipes, yet I also like his spin on "new" recipes, e.g. spicy adobo wings. I was pleasantly surprised to find the recipe for cascarone as this is a dessert that my late nanang (grandmother) and tita (auntie) only made. I've made it several times for my kids and I am happy to say that it's 100% exactly the way I remembered as a child. If you are a Filipino-American trying to reconnect with your culinary roots, or a foodie who appreciates all types of foods and wants to experience Filipino cuisine, I highly recommend 2 cookbooks - The Adobo Road Cookbook and Philippine Cookbook (by Reynaldo Alejandro).

There was a lesson in every bite!

All of the recipes are structured well and the photos are absolutely beautiful. The pages are colorful and lively and the recipes are healthy and yummy. I love how Marvin explains the story behind each dish and the history of common ingredients found in Filipino food. I felt a totally new appreciation for both Filipino food and culture! I honestly can't remember the last time I was so entertained by a cookbook. Absolutely loved it.

The essence of martial science...

Smith follows up volume one in this Wing Chun trilogy with another fine effort, this time detailing the techniques and tactics of the style. The material in this book can be used creatively as a guide to the applications of the forms described in volume one. This edition also contains an introduction to Chi Sau exercises, a vital component to Wing Chun training. What I like most about Smith is his open-minded perspective; in this book, he sights some of the strengths and weaknesses of the style, and he's not afraid to suggest solutions for oversights such as fighting outside trapping range and the lack of power strikes (readers might also consider a Wing Chun practitioner's vulnerability to a skilled wrestler's attack, an issue not addressed here). Another excellent analysis of this practical and highly efficient martial art.

simplistic and poorly illustrated

I agree with the other 1 star reviewer in that this book very poorly illustrates proper technique and is very, very basic. Fortunately, I read it at the book store and therefore did not waste any money.
When I found the book on Amazon while searching for other Wing Chun books, I was very surprised to see such good reviews for it. Of course, it could just be the author or friends of the author ;)
Especially watch out for anybody who tries to tell you you can learn the martial arts from a book - you can not. You can learn about it, but without qualified instruction, you can't learn how to do it.

Please, buy another book

I don't know why I keep on buying this kind of manual and after having read this book I've got a good reason to stop. 70 pages of chatting that 'any master' can do. The pictures don't show what the written should want to explain. They don't have a dynamical sequence and it's difficult to realize the words' author. 1 star is enough.

I took this book with me on a recent trip to Japan and found it both endlessly fascinating and surprozingly useful in understanding the little dance our hosts did when making introductions, the subtleties of negotiations about seating and a host of other behaviors that were curious to American eyes.
