Bruce Lee: Letters of the Dragon: An Anthology of Bruce Lee's Correspondence with Family, Friends, and Fans 1958-1973 (Bruce Lee Library)

Letters of the Dragon: Correspondence, 1958-1973 is a fascinating glimpse of the private Bruce Lee behind the public image.

It portrays a man with the patience and concern to dedicate as much effort to crafting a thoughtful personal answer to the letter of a young fan as to those from his old friends and associates; an extremely active man never too busy to make time for an old family friend in need of simple companionship; a man who never wrote without careful thought, and never thought from the heard alone, but always from the head and heart together.

The letters in this inspiring book track Bruce Lee's career and development from his decision, made while he was still in secondary school, to move to the US to further his education, through the many setbacks, redirected efforts, and triumphs of life that shaped his martial art and humanity, all the way to the last letter he ever composed, just hours before his sudden death.

After absorbing the letters in this volume, the reader will inevitably find that the private Bruce Lee was every bit as great as the public Bruce Lee, and deeper and broader by far. Letters of the Dragon: Correspondence, 1958-1973 is conclusive evidence that a life lived well is never too short a life.

"Letters of the Dragon: Correspondence, 1958-1973 collects hundreds of letters from the movie star, mostly to his family. His fond and matter-of-fact missives about shooting schedules and his pets make it easy to forget what a huge star he was." &#

A Peek into Lee
By A Customer
This collection of correspondence gives the reader a chance to peek into the mind and life of Bruce Lee. We get to tag along on his first trip to the US since his birth, his friendships, his marriage, his children, what he thought of the jet set, how the dog was eating, father-son bonding, etc. His heart went into every word, as his hand interpreted the flow of his mind.
Bruce's widow, Linda Emery Lee Cadwell, mentions in one of the forwards that until the last year of his life, Bruce didn't have enough money to make excessive long distance phone calls. I'd hate to sound selfish, but, lucky for us.

the real Bruce Lee....
By A Customer
I thought this book offered a completely different perspective of Bruce Lee and offered quality reading into the personal life of a famous martial artist. His letters were very honest, thought-provoking, and genuine from beginning to end. There was one very short and disturbing letter towards the end of the book which, in my opinion, was a significant clue as to why he passed so early and I hope other readers can understand this clue as well.
John Little did an extraordinary job of presenting the letters in order and importance as with all of his books on Bruce Lee. Highly recommended!

Letters of the Dragon
By S. Yoshida
From this book, I learned that reading someone's correspondence provides insights into that person's life that might not be as available through biographies, or even autobiographies. These letters were intended as intimate and private expressions from the heart, to be transmitted to family members and close friends. They were not formal and highly edited manuscripts prepared for a large unknown audience. They helped me to understand this man.

I found the following especially interesting.

He loved his wife and children very much. He repeatedly mentioned them in his letters.

He had no animosity towards the Japanese. He loved Japanese food, found samurai movies entertaining, delved in the Japanese martial arts, and enjoyed his visit to Japan.

He stopped in Hawaii (that's where I'm from!) on his way to San Francisco. And he wrote about plans to honeymoon in Hong Kong, Japan, and Hawaii, with his wife, Linda.

His agent tried to connect him to the Hawaii 5-O television series. p. 103

He gave encouragement to other pioneering Asian martial artists (e.g., Jhoon Ree) in their missions to establish themselves in the United States. In a letter to Ree, Lee expressed this familiar coping strategy, "Remember my friend that it is not what happens that counts, but how you react to them." p. 117

He tried to make his television character, Kato, more of an "active partner" of the Green Hornet, and less of a "mute follower." p. 77

Generally, this collection describes the development of a human being who made a dent in the universe. Bruce Lee's energy, optimism, struggles, and visions are on display in this volume.

This is a pocket sized English to Japanese Romanji dictionary

This dictionary contains only Romanji, not Japanese Characters, and so is easy for foreigners who cannot read characters to use and pronounce Japanese. Since its first publication, this eminently practical pocket dictionary has proven its value many times over, not only to foreigners wishing to express themselves in Japanese but also to Japanese studying English. Presenting all definitions in romanized Japanese, it is simple and concise, yet remarkably comprehensive for a work of its size. For the benefit of students of Japanese, the main body of the dictionary is preceded by a brief but useful summary of grammatical rules. For the convenience of Japanese students of English, all English entries are followed by their pronunciations according to the International Phonetic System.

  • Contains over 14,000 entries.
  • Japanese and English phonetic pronunciations.
  • Notes on Japanese Grammar and the Japanese language.

Forget This One!

Yet another "also ran" (i.e., sub-par) romanized bilateral dictionary for use in studying/learning conversational Japanese. Highly NOT recommended. WILLIAM FLANIGAN, PhD

Only useful if you want to translate English to Romaji
By Local Wonk
So far I have found the book to be of limited use because it is strictly a dictionary to translate English words into Romaji. When I had purchased it, I expected an English-Romaji & Romaji-English book much the same as I have with similar dicitonaries I've purchased for Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish. No luck here. As my intention in purchasing the book has been to read a Japanese book I have which is in both Kanji & Romaji, this book was to aid me in reading and as such is useless.

Maybe it was my fault, but I didn't recall any clear explanation in the book's description that it was strictly English-Romaji.

"Kubler's books distinguish themselves with natural, culturally-rooted dialogues, detailed notes (for both written and spoken language), generous practice activities and an amazing care for organization. These books will be valuable tools for both students and their teachers." —Prof. Eric Pelzl, Wisconsin Lutheran College

"Meticulously planned, carefully prepared and patiently tested for over a decade, the Basic Chinese series represents the most comprehensive introductory materials available now. The eclectic approach, the flexibility in use, the attention to authenticity of language in its sociolinguistic context, the myriad of audio and visual aids, and the array of rigorously designed exercises makes the Basic Chinese the ideal material for any committed learner embarking on the journey of learning the Chinese language." —Dr. Jun Yang, Senior Lecturer in Chinese, University of Chicago

"This is one of the best elementary Chinese textbooks, I believe, ever produced in the history of teaching Chinese as a second language… A great and unique work which will benefit students and teachers for many years to come." —Dr. Shengli Feng, Professor of Chinese Linguistics, Chinese University of Hong Kong

"A breath of fresh air… Its dual track for spoken and written language finally gives American students a chance to develop oral proficiency without being slowed down by the character writing… An ideal textbook for any program that seeks to advance rapidly in spoken Chinese and to fully prepare the students for their encounter with China." —Dr. Jingqi Fu, Associate Professor of Chinese, St. Mary's College of Maryland

"I have been teaching Chinese to high school students for over 25 years and have used a variety of texts. I decided to try Basic Spoken Chinese (BSC) with one of my classes on an experimental level, and I have to say it is the best text of its kind that I have ever seen. —Richard Ayres, St. Xavier High School, Louisville, KY

"Revolutionary in its approach to teaching and learning Chinese as a second language, this textbook series is easily one of the best that are currently on the market. In addition to the highly useful content, grammar explanations and cultural notes for each lesson are extensive, detailed and straightforward. The dream of having engaged and fully-prepared students in every class is an easily reachable reality for any program that adopts this series." —Professor Cecilia Chang, Chair, Department of Asian Studies, Williams College

"Contextualized so learners know not only what to say, but why, when, and with whom it is appropriate to use such language. …thorough and clear…refreshing." —Dr. Matthew Christensen, Associate Professor of Chinese, Brigham Young University

"Outstanding for its carefully graduated presentation of material in easily digestible sub-units, comprehensive and clearly written grammatical and cultural notes, and perhaps most important of all, its separation of the task of learning to speak the language from the very different processes of learning to read and write Chinese characters… The most exciting Chinese language textbook I have seen in many years." —Dr. James E. Dew, retired associate professor of Chinese, University of Michigan; former Director of the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies in Taipei

By David H. Gilstrap
I have been learning Chinese a long time and have always been frustrated in the way other methods combine the reading and speaking together. As well, do not apply their methods to usage one will frequently utilize, thus remember. This method is great, it offers speakin and writing/reading as two separate entities thus one can learn to speak at a separate pace to reading Chinese Characters. In this book, the Practice Essentials, it is filled with different speaking pattern drills of commonly used topics, which are a wonderful and much needed approach that other methods do not offer. Keep in mind that this book "Intermediate Spoken Chinese Practice Essentials" should be used with the book "Intermediate Spoken Chinese". I purchased this Essentials book and the Intermediate Spoken book and am happy with it, however, I as well, purchased the "BASIC Spoken Chinese" to fill in any holes in my Chinese Speaking, and am glad I did. So you may find starting with the Basic Spoken Chinese will fill in your own holes and tune you to the Intermediate Spoken.

Very good dictionary, with photos and pictures as well as hanja
By Amazon Customer
Excellent dictionary, although its sizes makes it a bit large to carry around. It has lots of great illustrations and photographs that are useful. An added bonus that was not in the description is that it includes the hanja (Chinese characters) for many (but not all) Korean phrases that originate from Chinese. The hanja is particularly useful for me as it helps me understand the meaning of the phrases in both languages, and understand the etymological roots of the words.

Think pronunciation not Romanization
By John Armstrong
I'm a Korean language learner and I've been using Kyubyong Park's Tuttle Learner's Korean-English Dictionary for about six months now. I really like it, and am constantly looking things up in it and generally poking around in it.

As the title indicates it is a learner's dictionary. The number of entries is intentionally limited and focused on common vocabulary. If you go beyond whatever textbook you are using and begin to take on Korean as it is actually written and spoken you are bound to encounter words and expressions that you can't find in this dictionary, and at some point you will have to get a more comprehensive one.

But what this dictionary may lack in coverage it more than makes up for with other information that is of great value to the learner. The most valuable feature of all, I think, are the example sentences. Every entry has at least one example, and many have two or three, illustrating different meanings or special usages. Moreover the examples are full sentences (as opposed to phrases) with sentence final verb endings in all of the four common speech styles (not just the polite that tends to dominate introductory texts but also intimate, plain and formal), and very often internal verbs as well in the so-called infinitive form (looks same as intimate) or with embedding and connecting particles. The copula is also very well represented. All examples are translated directly but naturally into English to show the meanings not merely of the individual words but also the structures ("patterns") they appear in, including a full range of tense and modal forms. (For example you will see examples of the colloquial ending -(eu)llae(yo) meaning `(I) want to' or `do (you) want to?' which, chances are, you will not see in your textbook.)

This is great, but the really nice thing is that the individual words in the examples are just about all in the dictionary, so that you can look up the words you don't know or aren't sure of and produce your own full "parses" in which every word has its meaning and role. The dictionary also includes endings and particles, so you can find them too. I've gotten into the habit of trying my best to fully understand the examples of any word I'm looking up (or that I just stumble on that seems interesting), and I'm finding that over time it gets easier and easier and I that understand more and more of the words and constructions on first look.

Another very valuable feature of the dictionary is that it shows you how every word is pronounced, not only in isolation but in context in the example sentences. This goes not only for the head words but all the words in the sentence. This is extremely useful because the pronunciation of Korean words, though largely predictable from the spelling (if you know enough), is not always so, and may also vary depending on what elements a word precedes or follows in a particular context.

The way the dictionary shows pronunciation is through the Romanization that has been since 2000 standard in South Korea. The declared purpose of this standard Romanization is to help foreigners see how Korean is pronounced (once they learn the basic conventions of the system), and it is very well suited for this. The dictionary uses it for this exact purpose in a highly consistent and accurate way. Once you get used to it you will see that having Romanizations for the head words and the examples is the next best thing to having recordings of all the items made by speakers of standard Korean. If you have a teacher who pays attention to pronunciation and corrects mistakes, or if you have opportunities to converse with native Korean speakers and have a good ear for language, you may not need the help the book gives you. But there are clearly many people learning Korean on their own who I think can really benefit from it.

Most Korean learners want to learn Hangeul, and many see Romanization as a crutch that they would be better off without and wish they didn't have to look at. This is understandable, but it misses the important point that Hangeul, while it generally represents the sounds of Korean, does not do so exactly, and chooses to hide (i.e. not indicate) a number of important changes that words (or rather roots and prefixes and suffixes, the building blocks of words) undergo in proximity to other elements. Hangeul is about spelling, and that is a different thing from pronunciation. Just because someone can recognize a Korean word as written in Hangeul does not automatically mean that they know how to pronounce it (at least not correctly).

Here's an example from the page 1 of the dictionary. I'll use Latin letters but Imagine you're looking at Hangeul. You see jeoneun + achime + iljjik + ireonayo. The given translation is `I wake up early in the morning' and is probably perfectly clear to you. (You may well know all four words.) But do you know how the sentence is pronounced? The book shows you in the Romanized version: jeoneun achime iljjing nireonayo. I'm guessing most beginners (and maybe also some intermediate learners) would not have guessed it right. What's happening is that an -n- is "magically" appearing between the final -k of iljjik and the initial i- of ireonayo and turning the k into ng. You may say, oh, that's just nasalization, and at some level you're right. Every beginner will encounter simple forms of it, for example hanguk + mal `Korean speech' pronounced hangungmal, maybe iss + ni `is ?' pronounced inni, and possibly sip+yuk `16' pronounced simnyuk, but I doubt most people will know every place it happens, whether in saying words themselves or understanding them when others say them, and I think everyone will benefit from seeing and taking note of it in pronunciations such as appear in the dictionary. Hangeul is not going to help them, they won't see it there. Hangeul represents spelling, not pronunciation.

Nasalization is just one case of Korean pronunciation that is not reflected in Hangeul. Another - and probably the most pervasive of all - is the strengthening of consonants after other consonants. Suppose you see a list of verbs in Hangeul, including sal+da `live', an+da `hold' and dam+da `put'. All three are dictionary forms. Are they all pronounced the same? No. The first is salda with weak (voiced) ending, while the second and third are antta and damtta with strengthened ending. Strengthening or lack of it is partly predictable but not close to completely, and to know whether a given word or phrase has it or not you really need to see (or hear) the pronunciation. The author pays special attention to this feature, and as a result the dictionary is a great source of information about it. This includes both the head words and the examples. (There are a number of other cases, but I think these two are the most important.)

If you accept - as I think you really must - that the real role of the Romanization in the Tuttle Beginners Korean-English Dictionary is to show pronunciation, both for head words and for example sentences, then there can be no question as to its value to the learner. It does not compete with or distract from the Hangeul (which is always given), it supplements it. The one challenge which proponents of a Hangeul only format can fairly make is, why use Romanization for the pronunciations, why not use Hangeul?

In fact, the author does show pronunciations of head words in Hangeul as well as Romanization, and in so doing confirms that Hangeul can be used for this purpose. (This is done by giving non-standard spellings that correspond directly to the pronunciations.) If it were only the head words that he wanted to show pronunciations for, then, yes, you could eliminate the Romanization and have a Hangeul only book. But the fact is that Korean pronunciation diverges from spelling most often where words and their building blocks are strung together, and the place where you see this is in the example sentences. You could in theory replace the Romanizations of the example sentences with Hangeul representations that conveyed the same pronunciation information, but in practice this would result in two mostly identical Hangeul versions of the sentences, differing only where spelling and pronunciation diverged. Would people read both? Presented with twice as much Hangeul as there is actual content, would they even read one of the versions? I don't think so. Maybe a system of selective Hangeul-within-Hangeul annotations would work, but somebody needs to show me. In the meantime, I believe that the existing format is very effective (once you appreciate its intention and value), and should be kept as is.

All in all then I really like the way Kyubyong Park's dictionary is put together. I have suggestions for possible improvements, but they are pretty minor. The first is to have a single main entry for each particle or ending that has multiple forms and reduce variants to simple cross-references to the main entry. (Most are items that vary depending on whether what they are attached to ends in a consonant or a vowel.) The second is to create a simple way of referring to the "infinitive" form of a verb or adjective and use it instead of -a/-eo/-yeo which is uses up space and is kind of tedious.

But those are small things. Overall I am completely satisfied with the dictionary and use it constantly. I recommend it to all learners and give it a solid 5.

Tuttle Learner's Korean-English Dictionary
By A reader
A very useful dictionary that is perfect for any level of the Korean language one is at. In the beginning the book gives an overview on how to write each hangul symbol and how to put them together. What is also a plus for this book is that this book also provides the Chinese characters that some Korean words are derived from. What is also good about this book is that for every word that is listed, it has a sentence with it and some words will provide notes for a better understanding. The only this I wish would be different would be that I would prefer the hangul before the romanization other than that a great book for any learners' collection. ^_^

Glossy cards are more controllable than computer apps
By Amazon Customer
These cards are in the same improved format as in Volume 1. They have the rounded corners and plasticity that makes them more hard wearing than the previous (version 1) Tuttle set. These (2013 version 2) cards are tough enough to remain usable after a drink is spilled over them (although that makes them a bit less shiny).

I prefer these physical flash cards to the virtual cards on a mobile phone because:
* these don't drain battery power,
* they can be shared with other learners,
* and most importantly, I can manage recycling the cards in the order I want, rather than having software pop up cards I'm tired of. That works especially well with these cards because they can be shuffled like playing cards and re-arranged without damaging the rounded edges.

The included MP3 CD contains, for each card, a simple reading of its character, phrase, and the four compounds of that character as printed on each. The vocalization is very clear, and I suppose you could listen to it in order for two hours, but I got bored after ten characters and went back to reviewing the flashcards (I don't get bored of that for hours because it feels like a game).

Learn, Recognize, and Understand Effectively
By Austin
These flash cards are incredibly useful for anyone interested in learning Mandarin Chinese; however, I'd particularly recommend this product to individuals looking for supplementary material for a course that they are taking or additional language support. These cards are most effective for learning to recognize and identify characters and tones used in Chinese. If you're interested in learning how to write the characters, I'd recommend instead purchasing a book published by the same company that makes these flash cards (Tuttle) called "Learning Chinese Characters."

There are 5 predominate reasons that I particularly love this product:
1. The cards are the size of playing cards. This makes them portable and easy to take with you wherever you go.
2. There is a hole punch in every card that allows you to slide a small ring (included) around the cards. Super easy to flip through all of the cards without loosing any between couch cushions.
3. Each card is laminated. You don't have to worry about bends or tears as you would with homemade paper notecards.
4. The cards teach individual characters, but also include other words the same character in a different meaning. This will help you understand how Chinese is essentially a set of building blocks to develop new words.
5. Cards are numbered and ordered methodically so that you will learn how to develop new words and sentences as you gradually progress without needing to backtrack.

My only complaint about this product is that the English and the Pinyin translations are right next to each other on the back. When first learning Chinese, most beginners will go through the process of learning how to understand and observe English to Pinyin (plus tones), Pinyin to characters, Characters to English. In a perfect world I would have preferred that the Pinyin and English were separated on the back of the card in different corners or something so that I could quiz myself on that information.

Overall I am incredibly pleased with my purchase and consider it a bargain that I could benefit so much from a language product that didn't cost me $300+.

In Addition...
By PinkPearls
I have only just received this kit. It is in addition to kit number one, and continues with more flash card of the next 1,500 characters for sequential learning. This second kit has everything the first kit has but it extends the lessons by an additional 1,500 words. I highly recommend this kit in conjunction with other learning aids.

Tropical Inspiration
By Orrett H. Wynter
I'm an Architectural Designer that lives/works in Jamaica and Bermuda and I'm also a fan of modern/contemporary architecture. I own a number of books on the subject, but few tend to address basic climatic issues that we in the Tropics face (and rightly so, since they are about projects north of the tropics). I've just received the book from my freight forwarder and had a chance to browse thru it. It really looks interesting and certainly provides inspiration for projects that can be successfully executed in our hot, humid climate.
The inclusion of architectural drawings (Plans, Sections, Elevations) is also welcome - too many books on Architecture neglect this very important point. I think this may be the telling factor for deciding whether this is to be another one of my coffee-table books, or a serious informative reference for ideas and inspiration. For now, I'm leaning to the latter.

Review
"Like fine wine, savoring a cup of tea involves more than expertise. In this charming anthology, freelance journalist and blogger Munichiello provides a refreshing reminder of the days when tea parties evoked thoughts of friendship rather than political differences." - Publishers Weekly

"In this charming anthology, freelance journalist and blogger Munichiello provides a refreshing reminder of the days when tea parties evoked thoughts of friendship rather than political differences." —Publishers Weekly

"As for the contents, the author recommends that you get a good cup of tea and sit back to read. I agree totally. This is a book to be taken in with some attention, not rushed through…" —EnglishTeaStore.com

"Not only is there a world of tastes and flavors to explore, but preparing and drinking tea provides "a quiet time to think and contemplate," says Munichiello, author of A Tea Reader: Living Life One Cup at a Time. In it, she shows the impact of tea on the lives of a cross section of tea lovers." —USA TODAY

"Like a fragrant pot of tea, this well-curated collection of personal narratives is full-bodied, bracing and delicious. Cozy up in a comfortable chair (with your favorite cuppa, of course) and lose yourself in the keen enthusiasm of this convivial group of tea lovers as they weave personal memories and heartfelt experiences about the importance of tea in their lives. This is a richly rewarding compendium that speaks to the passion and allegiance of tea drinkers." —Mary Lou Heiss, co-author of The Story of Tea and The Tea Enthusiasts Handbook

"Katrina brilliantly captures the romance and journey of tea." —Tracy Stern, founder of SALONTEA and author of Tea Party and Tea for You

"My recommendation is that reading an anecdote or two with a cup of tea will bring pleasure and appreciation to anyone who enjoys drinking tea." —Shozo Sato, professor emeritus, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

"While the book's topic alone makes it the perfect gift for the tea enthusiast in your life, the selections all are also skillfully written, whether somber, joyful or educational in tone. Most share a contemplative, peaceful sensibility (often achieved over a cup of Earl Grey). So although at least a passing appreciation for tea will further readers' appreciation, any fan of good writing will enjoy sampling the contents…even, dare it be said, those who prefer coffee." —Shelf Awareness for Readers

A Tea Reader: Living Life One Cup at a Time
By Linda L.
This is a wonderful book. After you read each story you feel as though you have just been comforted with a warm cup of tea. If you are able to sip a cup of tea as you read, all the better. It would make a great gift for any tea lover. If you buy it as a gift, order two copies, you will want to keep one for yourself.

A Warm, Cozy and Delightful Book
By Seas Mom
I enjoyed curling up with this book and reading several of the short essays each night. Just right for my short attention span! I enjoy tea, but am not a tea fanatic, and found myself longing for a cup of tea everytime I finished a story. What a delightful book. I've purchased a couple extra copies to give as gifts.

Like a good tea blend...,
By Jason O. Walker
A welcome addition to the tea book genre, mainly because it blends much of the praiseworthy from the various branches of tea-writings. In its pages, the path is broad enough to move from tea as tangential toward the direct epiphany tea delivers.

Though it may seem simple, writing a good tea-book is challenging. There at least three ways in which the literary work can stumble off the path toward an unfruitful demise.

The first is the tea history. There is already such an abundant selection of tea history books that they begin to become indistinguishable. The earliest popular works in this realm were warmly received, and so others followed. Same facts were relayed and stories re-told. Often these works were more of a history of the discovery of tea, or the business of tea.

The second pitfall is somewhat ichi-go ichi-e, the attempt to encapsulate individual, personal experience and then evoke the same psychological, spiritual, emotional reaction in the reader. Ichi-go, ichi-e, roughly translated as "one time, one meeting," reveals that unique and often fleeting element when sensory input and Mind converge. To a certain degree, even tea books that try to capture a lifetime of tea experience can trip over this stumbling block. The experience is observed but never completely shared.

Many tea writers also trip over the landmine of using tangential tea as a glue for the work. In these products, references to tea can become forced when another cohesive element (e.g. wine, coffee, etc.) would have worked just as well. To some degree, interpersonal and intrapersonal experiences can fall under this category. Many of the tea-evoked thoughts/feelings could have just as easily been encountered doing anything from using a new backscratcher to tasting that locally grown fingerling potato from the farmer's market.

A Tea Reader successfully avoids falling headfirst into the traps. While there are encounters with tea and references to literary works, there is enough here to capture the reader's attention without taking it hostage. If you tire of the granddaughter's recollections of grandmother's teacups, move on to a Qing dynasty poem. Or gain perspective from someone who works in the world of tea. Appreciating tea is like stepping into Heraclitus's ever-new stream, and A Tea Reader allows readers to step into the waters from various starting points.
