From Publishers Weekly
Cooking school teachers Chung and Samuels offer an alluring array of Korean recipes designed for the Western kitchen. As an added bonus, the authors delve into the history of the cuisine, including the importance of balance in taste and color, medicinal qualities of ingredients, and construction of the typical Korean family meal. They also include a lengthy section introducing the reader to common ingredients of the cuisine. The dishes, some traditional, some modernized for contemporary tastes, are what the authors call a starter kit: the building blocks essential to Korean cooking. Staples include Kimchi Paste, Soy Scallion Dipping Sauce and a collection of homemade stocks. Because Korean meals often include a minimum of five dishes, recipes are quick and accessible. Some, such as Korean Dumplings, include handy sidebars with instructions on technique. Others, such as Asparagus Salad, Korean Hot Wings, and Stir Fried Beef with Vegetables clearly appeal to the American sense of familiarity, albeit with a Korean flair. For the more adventurous, recipes such as Roasted Corn Tea, Kimchi Soup, and Warm and Spicy Squid Salad are sure to appeal. Complete with full-color photos throughout, this collection offers a welcome and undaunting introduction into Korean cuisine. (Oct.)

Great beginner's Korean book
By A. Thomas
Got this book from library first and used it so much I decided to buy it. It's rare that I want to make every recipe in a cook book, but that's the case here. I wanted to learn about Korean food and, living in Los Angeles, I have access to a rich, authentic Korean community. I use this book to guide me in Korean markets. The recipes are easy to follow, they always work and they're very tasty. For anyone who wants to expand their cooking repertoire to include this great cuisine, I recommend this book. (Also, compared it to others in the library and this was my favorite.)

Good for beginners, but not very authentic recipes
By Melo
After reading the reviews on most of the Korean cook books available on Amazon, I decided to go with this one. I'm a Korean American born and raised in Texas marrried to a Korean man born and raised in Korea. Needless to say, I found the need to learn how to cook more Korean dishes. I had a couple of recipes up my sleeves already, but that obviously wasn't going to be enough for a man that was going to be missing his homeland food terribly now that he's living in Houston. Yes, there are a few very good Korean restaurants in Houston, but we can't be eating out all the time! I was hoping this book would be perfect for a novice like me, but I ended up being quite disappointed. The illustrations are great, but the recipes are not all the most authentic. Some of the dishses my husband had never even heard of. Many of the recipes seem to be "westernized." I still think this would be a great book for a beginner, but not for someone who is looking for authentic Korean recipes.

Attractive, user friendly, and practical even for busy cooks
By Lynn Harnett
The basics chapter, which kicks off this attractive and practical book, is a confidence booster. Simple base sauces and spice pastes which last for months allow the home cook to whip up kimchi or mouthwatering barbecue at a whim (plus a day for marinating).

A sample meal might include Barbecued Ribs or Hot Wings or Whole Baked Fish (simply seasoned with Red Pepper Paste, made ahead and handy in the fridge) or Kimchi Hot Pot; Cucumber and Grilled Eggplant (pan-fried eggplant with raw cucumbers in a soy-scallion sauce), or Seasoned Bean Sprouts; Potato and Basil pancakes (also served with soy-scallion dipping sauce) or Kimchi Pancakes; Sticky Rice with Dried Fruit and Nuts, or Korean Fried Rice; and Garden Ripe Tomatoes Drizzled with Honey for dessert.

Organized by course, using ingredients found in the local grocery and accompanied by luscious photographs, these 100 recipes are easy and exotic, many taking only a few minutes to prepare. A user-friendly introduction to a lively cuisine.

Simple Habits for Complex Times: Powerful Practices for Leaders, by Jennifer Garvey Berger, Keith Johnston

When faced with complex challenges or uncertain outcomes, many leaders believe that if they are smart enough, work hard enough, or turn to the best management tools, they will be able to find the right answer, predict and plan for the future, and break down tasks to produce controllable results. But what are leaders to do when this isn't the case?

Rather than offering one-size-fits-all tips and tricks drawn from the realm of business as usual, Simple Habits for Complex Times provides three integral practices that enable leaders to navigate the unknown. By taking multiple perspectives, asking different questions, and seeing more of their system, leaders can better understand themselves, their roles, and the world around them. They can become more nimble, respond with agility, and guide their organizations to thrive in an ever-shifting business landscape. The more leaders use these simple habits, the more they enhance their performance and solve increasingly common, sticky business issues with greater acumen.

Whether in large or small organizations, in government or the private sector, in the U.S. or overseas, leaders will turn to this book as a companion that helps them grow into the best version of themselves.

Illustrates How and Why Developmental Capacity Matters in the Working World
By Kirk S. Robinson
This text builds on Jennifer Berger's "Changing on the Job," which outlines the different ways in which one can make meaning (i.e., one's developmental capacity). This new text also does that, but goes one step further by showcasing through storytelling what it looks like, in practical work settings, to hold a self-transforming way of making meaning. Since operating from this capacity is a little foreign to me at this stage in my life, I really appreciated seeing how it could play out. As I continue on my journey as a scholar and practitioner in student affairs/higher education, I anticipate on returning to this text as well as "Changing on the Job." In fact, I see myself utilizing both texts in potential future classes I teach in student affairs/higher education.

Great example of how to convey complex theory by telling a compelling story!
By Bjørn ULdall
I loved the way the authors have succeeded in finding a form which combines the ongoing telling of a story (based on real practice experience I presume), with introduction/reflection on theory, models, simple practice habits etc. It made the book very engaging both emotionally and intellectually. It was quite a treat to see that work so well, especially since in my own PhD I have myself been experimenting with this idea of an alternative form and exploring ways to combine a compelling narrative with analytical reflections/discussions – so I was very happy to see an example of that really working out well.

I believe this book offers great support for promoting the ideas of adult development and a complexity approach to leadership.

Includes a conscise and splendid introduction to Buddhism
By Dennis Littrell
There are seven lectures delivered by Alan Watts in this book put together by his son Mark Watts and published in 1995. One is on the relevance of oriental philosophy, one is on the mythology of Hinduism, a couple are on Zen, one is on jnana yoga, which Watts calls "intellectual yoga," one is an introduction to Buddhism, and the seventh is on Taoism.

Since Alan Watts died in 1973 his stature as an expert on Eastern religion and philosophy has only grown, partly because of the reprinting of many of his books including "The Way of Zen," "Tao: The Watercourse Way," "Nature, Man and Woman." and others, and party because the memory many people have of hearing him speak. What is particularly attractive about this little tome is the clear sense of the voice of Watts that comes through and the concise manner in which he reveals the scope and intent of the major religious philosophies of Asia, including Taoism, Hinduism, yoga, Buddhism, Zen Buddhism and even some Confucianism.

The religions are called philosophies in the title, but it's one and the same because in the East there is little distinction between philosophy and religion.

But Watts is more than an expert on Eastern religions. He devoted part of his life to the study of Western philosophy and science so that he would have a greater context in which to view the Eastern ways of life so dear to his heart. And of course Watts was the kind of man people relate to and was deeply loved and is sorely missed.

He had a style that cut through the clutter and obtuseness of the subject matter and got to the pure essence within. Here are some examples:

"...[T]he stomach's point of view is that the brain is the servant of the stomach to help it scrounge around for food." (p. 7)

"...[S]o a great university library is very often a place where people bury themselves and write books about the books that are in there. They write books about books about books and the library swells, and it is like an enormous mass of yeast rising and rising, and that is all that is going on." (p. 63)

"You will find constantly...--in psychoanalysis, in Gestalt therapy, in sensitivity training, in any kind of yoga or what have you--that there will be that funny sensation of what I will call 'spiritual greed' that can be aroused by somebody indicating to you, 'Mmmm, there are still higher stages for you to attain. You should meet my guru.'" (p. 70)

If you study Eastern religions for any length of time it becomes clear that there are great similarities between the various approaches. "Zen" comes from "ch'an" in China and ch'an from "dhyana" in India, all three words meaning approximately the same thing: "meditation." In the Tao it is written:

"To know yet to think that one does not know is best;
Not to know yet to think that one knows will lead to difficulty."

Watts points to the striking similarity of these words from the Kena Upanishad of Hinduism: "If you think that you know Braham, you do not know him. But if you know that you do not know the Brahman, you truly know." (p. 80)

One can see in the lectures as Watts roams from one aspect of Eastern spirituality to another a common sensitivity. One sees, for example, how Buddhism came from the Vedas, partially in reaction to early Hinduism and partially in concert with it, and then travelled east to China and Japan; and how Zen, inspired by Taoism, became a corrective to the over-intellectualism of Buddhism. Again and again Watts applies this sensitivity to the modern world and to the lives of his listeners. He sees the world in the way of the Tao, as an organism that grows and needs to be left alone. And he gives us this prescient warning:

"The whole attitude of using technology as a method of fighting the world will succeed only in destroying the world, as we are doing. We use absurd and uninformed and shortsighted methods of getting rid of insect pests, forcing our fruit and tomatoes to grow, stripping our hills of trees and so on, thinking that this some kind of progress. Actually it is turning everything into a junk heap." (p. 57)

Curiously--or perhaps not so curiously--Watts finds a connection between the Western academic philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and the watercourse, non-intellectual way of the Tao and Zen. He says that Wittgenstein "shows you that what you always thought were the major problems of life and philosophy were meaningless questions. Those problems are solved not by, as it were, giving an answer to them but by getting rid of the problem through seeing intellectually that it is meaningless." (pp. 64-65)

On the dedication page of the book Mark Watts quotes his father as saying, "The nub of all these Oriental Philosophies is not an idea, not a theory, not even a way of behaving, but a way of experiencing a transformation of everyday consciousness so that it becomes quite apparent to us that this is the way things are."

The way things are is beyond language. The way things are is indescribable.

A Capitalist in North Korea: My Seven Years in the Hermit Kingdom, by Felix Abt

Business in North Korea: a paradoxical and fascinating situation is interpreted by a true insider.

In 2002, the Swiss power company ABB appointed Felix Abt its country director for North Korea. The Swiss Entrepreneur lived and worked in North Korea for seven years, one of the few foreign businessmen there. After the experience, Abt felt compelled to write A Capitalist in North Korea to describe the multifaceted society he encountered.

North Korea, at the time, was heavily sanctioned by the UN, which made it extremely difficult to do business. Yet, he discovered that it was a place where plastic surgery and South Korean TV dramas were wildly popular and where he rarely needed to walk more than a block to grab a quick hamburger. He was closely monitored, and once faced accusations of spying, yet he learned that young North Koreans are hopeful—signing up for business courses in anticipation of a brighter, more open, future. In A Capitalist in North Korea, Abt shares these and many other unusual facts and insights about one of the world's most secretive nations.

Review
"…this book is worth reading because it captures quite well the gradual, unplanned process of what might be called 'reform from below.'" —Peterson Institute for International Economics

"Few westerners have had a similar opportunity to meet and work alongside ordinary North Koreans – let alone socialize with them – and his book demonstrates an abiding affection for the people of this benighted state." —Julian Ryall, South China Morning Post

"No one has [Felix Abt's] credentials: seven years of unparalleled access to most levels of North Koreans in the central government and seven of nine provinces, founder of a Pyongyang Business School and first President of the Pyongyang European Business Association. This "capitalist" attacks conventional wisdom on North Korea; sometimes with blunt force, sometimes with nuance, but always with a businessman's eye and always with a fiery, humor-tempered wit. Indeed, the personal pictures and lively pace of the book combine the feel of a fireside chat with facts one expects from a businessman." —Roger Cavazos, Associate, The Nautilus Institute

"It's rare indeed to get an insider perspective from one of these agents of change." —Foreign Policy in Focus

"The Swiss-born Abt, who lived and worked in Pyongyang from 2002 to 2009, is one of a small number of Western businesspeople who encourage economic engagement with North Korea." —Vice News

"Felix Abt prefers to stay apolitical and impartial when sharing his thoughts and memories of the seven-year sojourn. From the book we can see that he loves Korea and cares about its people. In his assessments of North Korea's past and present the author approaches all issues from a human (and humanistic) perspective, trying to show life in the country without political or ideological coloring."—Leonid Petrov, lecturer in Korean Studies, The University of Sydney

"Abt Draws from a trove of personal experience to create a vivid account of the people and place. Along the way, Abt addresses big questions such as economic reform and practical ones such as how to use e–commerce to achieve brand recognition in North Korea."—Jeff Baron, U.S. – Korea Institute at Sais

"…the book is also peppered with interesting anecdotes and stories about cultural and private life in the DPRK that do not typically receive attention in the western media."—Curtis Melvin, blogger, North Korea Economy Watch

About the Author
Felix Abt co-founded the European Business Association as well as the Pyongyang Business School in North Korea. Prior to this, Abt worked in Europe, Africa and Asia as a senior executive for F. Hoffmann-La Roche and the ABB Group. In 2002, ABB appointed him as the Resident Country Director in North Korea. He went on to become a point man for Western investments in the country, representing several multinational corporations and even founding a business of his own. He currently lives in Vietnam, and remains a shareholder in various North Korean joint ventures.

Super interesting book, but not without flaws
By Amazon Customer
I'd definitely recommend this book. You can read about all its positives in the other reviews, so let me give some constructive criticism. It's an authentic personal story, and it's not just its biggest strength but also the origin of its two biggest weaknesses:

1. The author does not deny that the North Korean regime can be oppressive and aggressive, but he's very easy going with it. He had a different experience, and that's great, but it feels *way too* easy going sometimes.

2. The whole book has a very distinct "everyone else is wrong, only I know the truth" aura. Usually it's OK - I mean he really has a fascinating story, and many people are ignorant about NK indeed - but time to time it can be quite annoying.

That said, it's a very interesting read.

An entirely fresh perspective on North Korea and therefore a must-read!
By Stacey
"A Capitalist in North Korea: My Seven Years in the Hermit Kingdom" by Felix Abt has its detractors and you may not agree with everything (or anything) he says, but there is no doubt that this is a book written from a unique first-hand experience as a "capitalist" in an arch communist country and I believe it deserves to be read for that reason as much as any other.

A book that challenges our mind-set like no other! Simply a compelling read.
By Phoebe Brown
I nearly didn’t read this book. The last thing anyone would describe me as is a ‘capitalist’ and I thought I would find little or nothing in Felix Abt’s book that I could relate to. However, in a spirit of open-mindedness I thought I would give it a go. I am so glad I did. For a self-confessed capitalist Mr Abt came across as remarkably liberal and humanitarian. No hard-nosed businessman is going to admit in print that he is exploitative and greedy, but Abt is pretty convincing that neither he nor many other ‘capitalists’ are purely in it to make a make a quick buck from underdeveloped and vulnerable countries. While I may still not be entirely convinced that a ‘free market’ is the only way to go, his case for its value in helping a country to develop, especially in the face of ‘strangulating’ (his term, but I think very apt) sanctions is hard to dismiss. So whether you are already a committed capitalist or more of a ‘leftie’ I recommend you give this book a try and see if it challenges your mind-set.

The Secrets of Kalis Ilustrisimo: The Filipino Fighting Art Explained (Tuttle Martial Arts), by Antonio Diego, Christopher Ricketts

Master the art of filipino kalis with this illustrated martial arts guide.

The Filipino martial art of ilustrisimo hails from Cebu, Philippines, where martial arts are still considered a matter of life-and-death survival—rather than sport or exercise.

Named after Antonio "Tatang" Ilustrisimo, the master who taught the style to both of the authors of this book, the art of kalis ilustrisimo has been in the Ilustrisimo family for more than five generations. Based on traditional Philippine stick and sword fighting methods—and refined by Antonio Ilustrisimo's vast personal experience in challenge matches—it offers a powerful, flexible, dynamic, and effective fighting style.

The Secrets of Kalis Ilustrisimo is the first book to deal with the techniques and theories of this very effective system of personal combat including the history of kalis ilustrisimo and structure of the system, the fundamentals of practice, the defensive movements and applications, and the training techniques used to prepare for actual personal combat. It also includes hundreds of photographs showing the essential movements and techniques of this martial arts style.

    About the Author
Became interest in arnis as a child in Pasil, Cebu, one of the cradles of Filipino martial arts. First a student of the Balintawak style of arnis, he became a student of Antonio Ilustrisimo in 1976 and remained a student until his teacher's death in 1997. In 1992, he was formally named heir to the fighting art of Kalis Ilustrisimo.

    Forget the politics
    By Dragan Milojevic
Previous reviewers have engaged in somewhat of "who's dady is the strongest" discussion, but that has nothing to say about this book. Now, I found the book very good in achieving the intended goal, i.e. giving an excellent presentation and explanation of the subject covered. My objection is that while it is nice to see applications of the same technique with different weapons, in some places the transfer is rather obvious, and I believe that that space could have been used better, maybe to show responses to some other types of attacks. Still, I have to note once more, thte book is very valuable to anyone interested in learning about FMA as it is, so I recommend it sincerely.

mistaken review by that Hawaiian guy
    By Dokleng
The book is OK as an introductory overview. The first guy who made a review was mistaken because despite all the videos and books circulated by authentic arnis/eskrima masters, they were never meant to impart more than a little peek into the art. For sure, they never meant to teach through books or videos, hence don't be surprised if this book is just 200 or so pages.

It's true that the Kalis Ilustrisimo masters learned by watching and videotaping Tatang Ilustrisimo. Most westerners like the first guy assume that arnis/eskrima has to be taught like a course or school subject. Sorry, but wrong. Arnis/eskrima is often self-learned in the Philippines by watching and training a few times with a few masters on sporadic instances. What makes them different from the much-looked down upon "seminar student" in the USA is that in the Philippines, you back up your training with LIVE and REAL sparring. Whereas in the US, they just attend seminars and collect certificates, videotapes, and photographs but don't spar w/o armor. Some masters and grandmasters here in the Philippines learned by just watching others practice or teach, and by imitating the moves and making them their own, AND THEN proving these techniques in sparring.

The students of Tatang didn't split up. Sagasa is not a school of Kali Ilustrisimo practitioners; it's a kickboxing style taught WITHIN and AS AN INTRINSIC PART OF Bakbakan International. Although not all Ilustrisimo practitioners are members of Bakbakan, they all interact together to this day since they all know each other personally.

Lastly, just because the late GM Villabrille was a great fighter, DOES NOT mean that he's incapable of telling tall tales. It is a very Filipino trait to tell tall tales especially in the FMA world where one-upmanship is the name of the game. The Filipino penchant for tall tales can be seen in the review posted by the Hawaiian first guy for this book, in which he describes the country of his ancestors' origins (I assume he's Filipino in ethnic descent due to his name and exposure to FMA, as well as his Hawaiian location) as NOTHING MORE THAN A COLLECTION OF GHETTOES. Exaggerated, isn't it? As I write this I am in the 52nd floor of an intelligent skyscraper in Manila.

It's safe to say that ALL the masters exaggerated their stories of achievement. The notion that GM Villabrille invented the word "kali" has enough basis although that notion isn't final as proven yet. The exaggerations come from the fact that they are all Filipinos, that they were recalling the stories from old memory hence getting some details mixed up or exaggerated, and that there was a language and conceptual barrier considering that 99% of FMA grandmasters who made FMA famous in the West were unschooled and practically illiterate. That's why the only jobs they got were not U.S.-educated "pensionados" but rather Hawaiian and Californian fruit pickers and harvesters.

All in all the book is great as an introduction and overview, and let's not begrudge the book's good traits just because we were hoping to learn Kalis Ilustrisimo from the book's contents. No, siree. If you want to learn Ilustrisimo, get yourself an AUTHENTIC teacher and train. Use the book only as reference and as a sort of primer on the style. Do not treat it as an instruction manual.

    Good but not Complete....
    By Jon
Although it explains the Ilustrisimo style to some extent, it didn't really explain how the weapon techniques can be converted to empty-hand. Also most of the information is on the history of this martial art and not enough on actual instruction. Personally if you wan't to really get a full grasp of this style try finding a good teacher. On a lighter note this book will still teach fundamental and intermediate techniques which will help you get a small idea on how this martial art works.

SUPERB COOKBOOK -- a MUST HAVE for those who like Asian food
By A Customer
I too love this cookbook so much, that I am on my second copy. The first one has been used so much that it has fallen apart, and it was a hardcover book! The pages are stuck together from so much use. There are so many delicious recipes in this book I don't know where to begin to recommend, but my absolute favorite is the chicken dish, I believe on page 393, or somewhere in that vicinity. It contains 5-spice powder, chili pepper, scallions, etc. Hot but DELICIOUS!!

Almost everything you ever wanted to know about Asian cooking ...
By Jeff Templon
I got this book after seeing a couple of "Charmaines" at friends' houses. This book has an astonishing range, starting in India/Pakistan and heading all the way to Japan, including pretty much everything in between, including the Phillipines and Malay/Indonesia.

Things I did not like : in order to cover all countries, she of course could not go into a huge amount of depth in all countries ... I would have liked to see more Thai recipes for example. Another thing was that many recipes seemed to be difficult, one can't fault the book on this though, I suppose that's what happens when you cook authentic. I have tried a couple of the more adventurous ones and they came out fantastic, so if you have the time, well worth the effort.

Things I *did* like : the glossary in the back totally rocks! I am an American living in the Netherlands and I regularly travel to Switzerland for work, and here in the Netherlands (and in Switzerland) I get my ingredients at a number of different stores, some chinese, some japanese, many european, and some indonesian. The glossary has the spelling of each ingredient in as many as ten different languages, so it doesn't matter what store you go to, you can find your shrimp paste as kapi or as trassi ... Also there are some very good recipes from countries that I otherwise never would have tried ... one of the burmese curries is really great, and the korean recipes I have tried rock too.

There is also lots of information on how to cook the things right ... what order to add the ingredients, how long to cook the coconut milk before adding the spice paste in order to get the right consistency ...

Bottom line: excellent reference work on ingredients and techniques : wide range of excellent recipes, many of which you would not easily find elsewhere; not for casual cook who wants to make a quick, easy meal ... but detailed enough for an adventurous beginner to find his/her way. Recommended!!!

Everyone who wants to cook Asian should have this on the shelf
By G. Brown
I was given this book in 1985 as a new American bride living in Australia and it has become my bible for Asian cooking. Other reviewers have spoken more thoroughly about Solomon's book so I don't need to here, but I will say this: I learned to cook good Asian food by thoroughly reading the chapter I was interested in, then getting out and trying the recipe. When I started using this book I was not an accomplished cook but was competent. The recipes here are authentic and not trendy. Since receiving this book I've traveled a bit in Asia and was happily surprised that the food I ate in restaurants tasted just like the recipes I'd been making at home out of this book. These recipes are thankfully not "adjusted for the western cook," (that is bland and boring) but every bit as spicy and flavorful as what one would eat in Thailand, China, India and elsewhere. The criticism that some recipes are too involved or too hard can be justified in some cases, but really, if you're going to cook Asian, don't settle for lesser bottled sauces and pastes when by using Solomon's book you can eat the tastier real deal. For over 30 years now I've been serving delighted consumers Asian food made from this book. I recommend it to everyone who wants to cook real, varied Asian cuisine and not just the few popular dishes one finds in a restaurant. My last word on the subject: I have hosted nine foreign exchange students and countless international visitors to my home over the years. The one thing they all miss is food from their countries. Whenever Asians visit I try to cook something that will remind them of home. Virtually all of them have commented on how wonderful it is to taste "real" food and they are pleasantly surprised that an American can actually cook it. Many things I learned about Asian food and cooking I learned from this cookbook.

Pressure-point Fighting: A Guide to the Secret Heart of Asian Martial Arts, by Rick Clark

Supplement your martial arts skills with this expert guide to pressure point fighting.

Western students of Asian martial arts have long been haunted by the aching suspicion that something is missing from the arts they love and practice wholeheartedly—something intangible, but something so essential that its absence leaves an unbridgeable void. For many, that missing ingredient is a true and thorough knowledge of the body's vital points: what they are, where they are, how to quickly find them under duress, how to use them, constructively or for destruction—and how to recognize them in the kata, hyung, or forms they thought they knew so well.

In Pressure Point Fighting, martial arts expert Rick Clark offers a systematic introduction to this knowledge and to the tools needed to ferret out more of this information from forms and techniques already in place—knowledge and tools that are not dependent upon acceptance of the tenets of traditional Chinese medicine, or modern Western medicine, for that matter, but which are based solely upon open-minded observation and willingness to try new, or old, approaches to martial arts training.

Review
"In my fifteen years as a martial arts journalist, I have seldom seen a martial artist with the ability and knowledge of Rick Clark. Pressure Point Fighting is a book for all martial arts styles… a must-read for students, teachers, and those interested in learning more about common-sense martial arts and self-defense." —Jane Hallander, from the Foreword

About the Author
.

Rick Clark began teaching martial arts in 1962, at the age of fourteen, and has been an enthusiastic student ever since. With ample experience in arts including judo, jiujitsu, karate, and Korean systems, a thorough understanding of physiology, and a knack for digging out gems from obscure sources, he has helped to bring about a quiet revolution in the training regimen of martial artists around the world. When he's not traveling throughout North America and Europe to conduct vital-point and applications seminars, he continues to research diligently at home in Indiana.

Core Principles

Do not think always in one straight line
- Hozoin School (1600 a.d.)

In this chapter I would like to look at what I consider to be some of the core principles of the martial arts I teach. These core principles can offer you some alternate constructs when analyzing various aspects of the martial arts. In addition, some of these concepts may prove useful in other situations in your life. For example, "out-of-the-box thinking," "fault-tolerant systems," "Ockham's Razor," and "Pareto's 80-20 Law" are concepts found in the business world and philosophy, yet they offer us some insights into the martial arts.

These core principles are not written in stone; they offer some alternate ways of looking at a problem and perhaps a solution not otherwise apparent. Principles can be added to this list at any time, and you may have some principles you feel should be added to this short list. As I become aware of other concepts that offer insight into my teaching and training, I will gladly add them to my core principles. We should always endeavor to increase the body of knowledge and our understanding of the martial arts. I have often found it interesting to discover principles in the strangest places; you could be reading a book on philosophy or business and find a principle that relates to the martial arts. Read and expand your knowledge, not only in the area of martial arts but in other areas as well.

The following concepts are touched on briefly, but entire chapters and books could be written on any one of these concepts. This is beyond the scope of this text and my limits as well. So, let's get to it!

Disappointing
By A Customer
I've been a student of the Martial Arts for 20+ years. I bought this book as the title and synopsis suggested it might have information on pressure points and their applications. This is a new publication that I was hoping would build and improve on what has been done before. I was looking for significantly more than "hit someone in the nose and it'll hurt them" type of information.
Chapter 1 covers Mr. Clark's Core Principles - easy reading on general concepts, ideas that most martial artists would agree with. Short chapter, no real useful info on pressure points.
Chapter 2 covers some info on Eastern & Western medicine and seems to allude to the notion that both are good sources of information, but not necessarily for pressure point fighting. Mr. Clark also elects to use terms such as "Triple Warmer 17" and "Gall bladder 20" instead of common terminology that most would understand. Short chapter, no real useful information on points.
Chapter 3 - Analysis: "The intent of this book is [to] help you look at Kata from a different viewpoint...". I would agree with that statement, not that it's evident from the title. Short chapter, no useful info on points.
Chapter 4 - Kata Applications: Very long chapter. Mr. Clark, in my opinion, strives to force fit Kata movements into applications, with some (not overly useful) information on points. Mr. Clark repeatedly states that the suggested application fits are not necessarily what was intended by the creators of the kata, just some of his ideas on how they could be interpreted. I found his "out of the box" ideas interesting, but my experience suggests that some of the techniques pictured/explained would work only with a willing victim, specifically some of the throws and entry into some of the locks - my opinion, I could be wrong. This kata application, while interesting, was not the information that I was looking for, nor expecting in this book. Some info on a very few strike points - nothing new or revealing.
Chapter 5 - The Points. Finally, but what a disappointment. No references to drawings or pictures, most points had no illustrations throughout the book. No alphabetical (or any sorted) listing, only a couple of lines on location of the points. No info on how hard to strike, muscular coverage, effect, or revival techniques. In fact, earlier in the book, he specifically states that revival techniques are not covered, and that you shouldn't try these points unless you know how to revive - so why would I buy this book if I wasn't planning to try some of it out?? I went to this chapter first, was stunned with how little information there was, and ended up reading the whole book in an unsuccessful attempt to find anything useful on points.
Appendix A - Vital Points List. A bunch of lists of point names, with minimal description, if any, from a bunch of other authors. Definitely only useful as a semi-bibliography. A detailed bibliography is presented in Appendix B.
My conclusion: There's so much more that this work could have been, judging from the bibliography. Having read the book, I would not recommend it if you want to learn about pressure points to any depth. If you want to have cool discussions on what kata movements could be interpreted as, then you may want to read Mr. Clark's book.

Useful book
By magellan
This is an excellent book by Mr. Clark, although I agree with some of the other reviewers here that the title isn't exclusively a book on pressure-point concepts and their application. The book's real strength is in illustrating some of the bunkai implicit in the katas, and in clarifying some applications that might otherwise seem mystifying. This is certainly valuable as the bunkai aren't practiced enough in many schools (and even in my own school), and this book goes over a number of these in detail. My only criticism is that the connection between the actual bunkai and the pressure point information isn't as clear or relevant as it could be.
For an experienced instructor like myself this isn't a problem, as I can extrapolate, for example, in the case of a throw or takedown, several pressure points that might be useful to apply along with the throw or takedown. But a beginner or intermediate student might not be able to easily make that connection. Also, Clark had some applications I hadn't thought of myself and I found those vaulable.
The author discusses both eastern and western medical theories and concepts and how they relate to pressure points. I noted the author doesn't uncritically subscribe to the Chinese theories, which are best regarded as pre-scientific metaphors for later scientific analysis of the underlying anatomy and physiology, but he discusses these concepts presumably for completeness, and besides, every other book on pressure-point fighting accepts these ideas as received truth, anyway. Even Dr. Yang Jwing Ming, who I consider very knowledgeable and educated in several arts and in Chinese medical theory, ascribes to these ideas in his Eagle Claw kung-fu book and other places. Well, Dr. Ming's doctoral work was in engineering rather than physiology and neurobiology, which was my field, so although an educated man it's not exactly his main scientific strength.
The problem is that there are too many martial artists who aren't well grounded either in western anatomy and physiology (let alone the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, which can get quite technical), and so they naively accept lock, stock, and barrel the Chinese theories for which there is no scientific basis whatsoever. Of course, people can say, "Well, science doesn't know everything." That's true. However, the fact that science doesn't know all of the truths out there doesn't mean we don't know that certain things are simply false and are nonsense, and the Chinese theory of meridians and chi and how pressure points work (especially how certain pressure points are more vulnerable at certain points of the day) is an example of this.
Not to beat a dead horse, but my kung-fu instructor would occasionally say that a certain point was vulnerable in the afternoon. Well, being a polite student (and his senior student) I never contradicted him on this, but this is now 25 years later and now I'm the teacher. The simple fact is that almost any pressure point strike could have a greater effect later in the afternoon than in the morning since that's when many people reach their physiological low during the day, and things like blood sugar and circulating catecholamines (such as epinephrine and norepinephrine) reach their lowest points and people just don't have as much energy. Furthermore, neuroactive chemicals that can cause drowsiness build up in certain areas of the brain. Furthermore, the brain, which can only digest glucose, is sensitive to a drop in blood levels. But the ancients who devised these theories had no knowledge of blood chemistry, neurobiology, or any other modern medical science area.
One interesting aspect of the book that I really liked is Clark's drawing from writers as diverse as Klauswitz, the 19th-century German military strategist, William of Ockham, the medieval philosopher and logician, and economist Wilfredo Pareto (the "80/20" rule) for concepts to illustrate different concepts in the martial arts. Since the only military stratetgist that most martial artists seem to be familiar with is Sun Tzu (who gets too much press in my opinion), I was pleased to see something a little different in that regard and I give Mr. Clark points for that. I found this quite useful and shows Mr. Clark to be educated beyond the boundaries of the martial arts as well.
The author illustrates and discusses about 30 different techniques specifically drawn from Okinawan and Japanese katas. These include attack combinations, self-defense, takedowns, and throws. There is some excellent material here on the application of some otherwise obscure and hard to understand movements. For example, Clark shows how the double mountain blocks in the kata Jutte (which is spelled "Jitte" in the book) could be used as a striking and throwing combination, which had never made much sense to me before except as a double blocking movement. The author uses mainly Heian (or Pinan) 4 and 5 Naihanchi 2 (or Tekki in Japanese karate), Bassai Dai, and Kwanku (or Kusanku in Okinawan karate) as the main source of examples, but a couple of throws from Jutte and Empi are also shown.
Finally, there is an appendix listing the pressure points and systems of about a dozen different writers, some out of print, and an appendix on the pressure points with a brief description and definition of each. All in all, I found this a good book although as I said, it might only be useful to someone with enough experience to connect the pressure point information with some of the alternative applications. But the book would still be useful to beginners for its useful illustrations of how to apply many of the bunkai.

Title is misleading....
By A Customer
As a student, and instructor, of practical self-defense techniques I must say that I'm very disappointed in this book. If you only read the "blurb" at the top of the book, "It doesn't matter why it works. It only matters that it works!", you'd be under the impression that this book is a direct, no nonsense approach to learning what points to attack during self-defense. Well you'd be wrong. This book is more for someone who is interested in "discovering" self-defense techniques that are "hidden" in traditional kata. First of all, someone who is interested in learning "pure" self-defense skills does not practice traditional katas, if they practice any katas at all.
Next, the "blurb" at the bottom of the book, "Simple step-by-step instructions for how and when to use pressure point fighting to your best advantage." should ACTUALLY mean "Simple, step-by-step instructions". Well they are "simple" if you have an "higher than average" knowledge of anatomy, both Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. There were NUMEROUS anatomical terms that I didn't understand at first until I read further into the book, where there was a more "common" desription of the point.
As far as the "techniques" in the book, there were too many demonstrations of "hidden self-defense" techniques in kata and not enough images of the points being attacked. I was expecting to see at least ONE image of a human body showing all the different points to attack. But no such luck. In general, this book is not for someone who is interested in ONLY practical self-defense skills, like myself. If you want a book that's more practical, I recommend Bruce Tegner's "Self-defense Nerve Centers and Pressure Points". It is far more practical and informative than this book.
