About the Author
Michael L. Kluemper served as a board member for the National Council of Japanese Language Teachers from 2001—08, and has worked on national task forces for the implementation of a Japanese AP course. He lives in Louisville, KY.

Lisa Berkson was honored by the Association of Indiana Teachers of Japanese as the language teacher of the year in 2007. She currently teaches Japanese and Chinese language classes at Dobson High School in Mesa, AZ.

Nathan Patton teaches Japanese language at Scott County High School in Georgetown, KY where he serves as Chair of the World Language Department.

Nobuko Patton has taught Japanese at the University of Kentucky, Georgetown College and Jessie Clark Middle School in Lexington, KY. She lives in Kentucky.

this book is great for self study if you are dedicated enough

I picked this book up at boarders for 20% off since it's liquidating and I love it. don't believe what those other reviews say about needing a working knowledge of hiragana before starting this book. this book offers complete alphabets with phonetic translations, the CD rom that comes with the book helps you out with the more difficult sounds. You DO NOT need to join a teachers class to gain full access to the online materials. the only thing you need to join it for is the games section because that is hosted by a third party website designed for school use. you could pay 150 bucks to gain access to it but you don't need to. the content that is readily available to you even before you make an account on the website offers kana and konji flash cards and kana workbooks with some activities. there is little translation for you in the text book itself when it comes to the dialogue and some vocab but it offers pictures so it makes you work your brain more which will help learning. also this book teaches you to read and write as you speak so you use more of you senses while learning which helps retain information. also I find if I'm stuck on a word I can almost see what it looks like in japanese and all of a sudden I can remember it!
This book is meant for classroom use so some of the exercises in it are kind of awkward, the work book would not be a bad buy but I don't think you need it if you just steadily work on the content in the book. get down the vocab and suggested hiragana before progressing to the next chapter, a chapter a week maybe. there is no quick and easy way to learn a language but this is the best i've come across yet. Oh and for supplementary work I have a DS game, My Japanese Language Coach, I play every now and then to just reinforce what I'm learning in the book and pick up a few extra vocab words. Plus there is several online japanese word games you can play and websites with japanese children's book you can try reading when you feel more confident. bottom line this is a great book for classroom study and self study if you are dedicated enough.

Probably best only in classroom setting.

I saw this in a local bookstore and was charmed by its attractive look and use of manga for dialogues.
I picked it up and started to go through it deeper at home.

My early conclusion is that this book is intended for use in a classroom as a textbook, and not something for individual self-study. Here's why:
1) The other reviews are correct when saying that you really need to feel very comfortable with hiragana and katakana before you come to this book. I expect that in a classroom, the teacher would spend as much time as necessary to introduce the kana. And being fairly systematic, they leave it to the teacher to go about it however he/she sees fit. As an example, in an early activity, the book challenges you to write your English name in katakana. But it doesn't go into any detail about how to convert sounds which aren't in Japanese to katakana.

2) Also, the book doesn't have English translations of the dialogues, or many of the vocabulary words. This is obviously not a problem in a classroom setting. It's possible to look up words one at a time in the dictionary in the back, but leaving them out in the chapters themselves just seems like evidence that their target audience is classroom students.

3) The website component has extra materials but you have to be part of a class to make use of it. The teacher has to make a special account and then when you create your username, you have to pick which teacher is yours. So self-learners are missing out on some amount of content that they paid for.

4) I don't like that all exercises are relegated to the Workbook sold separately. I thought the Workbook would be only for additional practice, and that the main book would have some exercises too. But so far it seems like all the exercises in the main book are clearly intended for classrooms where you would talk with your friends in pairs.

I love this textbook!!

I am using Beginning Japanese in my classroom, with high school students, and We are enjoying it very much.

First of all, my students love the manga for the dialogues. It facilitates students engaging learning and understand the context. My students ask me for a permission to take the textbook home!

I like the content, too. The Dialogues, which are also in straight text, are longer than those of AIJ; so I feel that it is more practical, and there is A LOT of cultural content (including traditional and contemporary culture, social interactions, and even its historythat). I love the point that "culture notes" are NOT separated from the main component. My students also enjoy them, we have a chat about the component or context every time after reading a dialogue.

We love the vocubulary lists with creative and cute pictures/drawings with colores! My students often smile with the pictures/drawings and ask me some questions about the pictures because those reflect Japanese cultural. (ex. "telephone" is introduced with a picture of a green public phone seen in Japan.) It may be a bit inconvenient because there is no English equivarent with those vocab. pictures, but the textbook has glossaries after each chapter and at end of the textbook. So I encourage my students to utilize those glossaries in order to build their self-learning skills.

Our school for sure will purchase "Intermediate Japanese" when it is published!

Absolutely Excellent!

Samurai Wisdom is absolutely excellent. Not only does this book provide the reader with a deep understanding of the samurai mind and their values, but if studied and applied, it also provides the reader with many valuable principles to live by in today's world. This book is a good translation of five literary works concerning Bushido from Yamaga Soko (1622-1685). In my opinion, this is one of Thomas Cleary's best books (and I have enjoyed many of his books).

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Samurai history, Bushido, or the warrior lifestyle, or who just plain wants to develop his or her character in a world becoming more and more void of character and integrity. This book is excellent. Don't just read it, but apply it to your life. 5 Stars!

Cleary does good

I'm not a fan of Thomas Cleary. I much prefer the translations done by William Scott Wilson and Ralph D. Sawyer particularly when the subject of war or warrior hood comes into play. Mr. Cleary's work tends to be aimed at the Scholar or Businessman not the Professional Warrior or Martial Artist. Mr. Cleary did an excellent job with these works making them come to life for the 21st century reader. Having read other English translations in academic sources (like Monumentia Nipponica) not available to the average Joe, I believe he out did himself.

Soon to be another Bushido Classic

This is another massive (256 pages) title from Mr Cleary, one of the best known & accomplished translators of Asian Wisdom, particularly in the field of martial arts & all things samurai. This is a totally new & refreshing look at the life of the samurai, his history, his way of thinking, the reasons & benefits for living the way they did & a deep insight into their minds. I'm sure this will turn out to be another successful book on how to live successfully.

This work is unique as it's the first translation of a series of five books by Yamaga Soko (1622-85). A somewhat contentious writer of his time & a bit of a philosopher on the side.

These writings positively add to the wisdom series of books on Bushido (The Way of the Warrior) of ancient Japan. It deals with its principles & practices & the way that they lived, worked, fought & died for. A sincere study of this type of military science, which if applied to everyday living now, is as relevant today as it was more than 300 years ago.
They offer an in-depth practical guide to building character.

If you are new to Mr Cleary, let me reassure you that his latest work is just as riveting, interesting & colourful as all his previous titles. He has a very clear, easy to read & logical style. Unlike some other similar titles around, you won't be bombarded with unpronounceable & unmemorable Japanese names on every line.

Each of the chapters of the five books are broken down further into more manageable headed sub-chapters, making it one of those useful books that one can just randomly dip & delve into.

I'm confident that this book will also become a classic in time along with others like Bushido by Nitobe, the Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, The Book of Five Rings by Mushashi & The Lone Samurai by Yagu Munenori.

About the Author
Joi Barrios holds a Ph.D. in Filipino Literature from the University of the Philippines. She serves as a Lecturer teaching Filipino and Philippine Literature at the University of California, Berkeley while on leave as an Associate Professor from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). Barrios has won fourteen national literary awards and, for her contributions to literature, was among the 100 women chosen as Weavers of History for the Philippine Centennial Celebration. In 2004, she also received the TOWNS (Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation's Service) Award.

Great textbook for anyone trying to learn Tagalog

For anyone wanting to learn Tagalog, the texbook choices are spare. Therefore, to get one's hands on any Tagalog language textbook becomes an accomplishment by itself. Luckily, any person with even just a slight inclination to learn Tagalog will strike gold twice with this book. The language that the writer uses in explaining the various components of the language is very accessible. The dialogues that begin every chapter are very practical and relatable and allow for a much easier absorption of the lessons. The "Mga Tala sa Kultura" that give important cultural notes are very detailed and include mini vignettes that put these cultural notes in the context of the language. The writer's own personal experience with the language really shines here. It's knowing the little quirks and idioms of a culture that separate the proficient speaker from the fluent one. These neat and helpful notes fast track a learner to the latter category. My favorite part of the book is the "Pagbabasa" section at the end of every chapter. This section is made up of one or more paragraphs (more with each passing chapter) in which a learner can apply what they've learned from the chapter and read little stories in Tagalog. I've studied many languages and have done so through a nice variety of methods. My personal opinion is that to really retain a language, one of the very best things that a language textbook can do for learners of a language is to provide readings in that particular lingua. You're not just, for instance, practicing speaking by writing dialogues. You're practicing reading by reading! For me, this a feature of the book that really helps to elevate it and take it beyond the offerings of others. This textbook is great for those wanting to learn how to converse in and read Tagalog. The author truly makes an effort to ease the learning process by making the lessons accessible. This is definitely a mainstay in my collection of language textbooks.

The pedagogical feature of this book works for heritage language learners at university. There is enough number of examples and exercises for students to work on. With the morphosyntactic nature of Tagalog and other Philippine languages, some aspects of grammar are really challenging and therefore require explanation from the language teacher.

Two ways YOU can make this book much more useful

This book and the sequel, The Second 100 Chinese Characters, are excellent drill (recognition) and (writing) practice books for learning Chinese characters, their use in some phrases, pronunciation (Pinyin), and of course meanings. Rather than filling up all of the practice squares and running out of space to write in the book, cut out each of the pages and place them in clear page protector sleeves in a 3 ring binder. Then use dry erase pens (red or black work very well) with a suitably small point, along with a separate dry eraser with about a 1 inch diameter (Foray Dry Erase Board Cleaner works nicely)to clear your full page shortly after you finish it. This is important because your writing erases more easily on these sleeves if you don't let it linger after moving to another page. Both books' pages can fit nicely in one binder and you can use it over and over.

In addition to the books, I very highly recommend buying Tuttle's business card-sized flash cards Volumes 1-4, which have the numbered companions to each page of these two books. They contain most of the additional information that appears on the books' pages for each character. I bought several cheap camera/cell phone carrying cases from discount bins that are the right size to hold a stack of cards, and carry one with me to use whenever I am waiting somewhere (like in the dentist's office or when standing in a long line) with a few minutes to kill.

Organized, helpful, great workbook.

I am learning to speak Mandarin but felt I needed more knowledge of the written language to get a more comprehensive feel for the language. I looked around and settled on this one and it was a good choice. It has just enough information for me to learn the character and its meaning as well as some commonly used phrases in which each character appears. It gives ample space to practice the strokes of the character. The characters are also in a type size that makes it easier to read than some other books I've looked at.

Good introduction to writing

This book is most useful for students with no exposure to the Chinese writing system. After a clear and thorough introduction to the history and development of Chinese characters, students are introduced to 100 basic characters - a nice attainable number for the first year of high school instruction or the first semester at the university level. Each entry includes several example compounds (very important for Chinese, in which disparate characters can be combined discretely to form unexpected words) as well as nice, large boxes for practicing. While the Matthews have made a nice introduction to Chinese characters, more serious students of the language will outgrow it quite quickly. Their newer book Tuttle Learning Chinese Characters Volume 1: A Revolutionary New Way to Learn and Remember the 800 Most Basic Chinese Characters provides several hundred more characters (without the practice space) for the more ambitious.

About the Author
Harry K. McEvoy, a long-time resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, founded the Tru-Balance Knife Company there in 1949, and almost ever since has been the primary supplier of quality throwing-knives to professionals and sportsmen alike. He has coached and demonstrated knife and tomahawk throwing for more than thirty years and is the author of numerous books and articles on the subject.

Good read, good info and good history

Old school thrower, good information and I like the history and reading about the techniques they used. Yes, there are books more dedicated to techniques and How To but as a person who's been throwing knives and tomahawks I enjoyed this. Don't get me wrong, it does teach techniques. I think this is a good read for any thrower or somebody interested in throwing.

Disappointed

I know that this review may not be what some people want to read, but I just got the book a week ago and my impressions were not good. I have never gone through the trouble or expense of returning anything to Amazon, until this book. This book is old and outdated, it is not hard to tell. There are very few pictures, and a distorted sense of organization. Half of the pictures were drawings of irrelevant knives. I thought I would get detailed information about throwing, but most of the book is dedicated to famous knife throwers, and not to helping you learn. It is short and overpriced. A real let-down. I would look elsewhere for the information you wanted to get out of this book.

About the Author
Dr. Binh Nhu Ngo is the Director of the Vietnamese Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and has been teaching Vietnamese there since 1992. He was born and educated in Hanoi, and earned his Ph.D. in linguistics from the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. He has taught Vietnamese and linguistics at Moscow University, and since 1992 he has taught at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) and at a number of universities and colleges in the United States. He has served as the Vice-President of the Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages (COTSEAL) and represents Harvard University at the Group of Universities for the Advancement of Vietnamese Abroad (GUAVA). His other books include Speak & Read Vietnamese (Simon & Schuster) and Elementary Vietnamese (Tuttle).

Not perfect, but very worthwhile and useful

I was looking for a book to help me bring my Vietnamese to the next level, and originally I had no intention of buying this one because of my bad experience with its predecessor, “Elementary Vietnamese.” However, besides the fact that it is the only resource I am aware of (except for “Contemporary Vietnamese Readings”) for learning Vietnamese at an advanced level, I have found that “Continuing Vietnamese” is a resource very much worth having and using, though there are many things in it that I wish were different. First, my criticisms:

1. This book repeats one of the main faults of its predecessor: piling on new vocabulary endlessly, and not reinforcing it. (On average, a language learner needs to see a new vocabulary item 15 times in order to retain it. Most items in this book, you will see once or twice and no more.)
2. There is 10 hours’ worth of audio on the accompanying CD-ROM, but it is distributed inefficiently. Grammar lessons are read-in English-on the CD, for some unaccountable reason. Dialogues are read only once, with no pauses for repetition.
3. The grammar explanations, while helpful, are far too sketchy, and examples are far too few, for the complexity of the drills and exercises. By lesson 3 I concluded that the aggravation of trying to figure out the exercises was doing more harm than good to my language study, so I decided to make my own exercises. (This also allows me to practice the new vocabulary often.) I think anyone studying this book independently, as I am, will have to use a bit of ingenuity to get a good learning experience from this book.

Now, the good parts:
1. The dialogues and readings are valuable practice in reading, speaking, and hearing authentic Vietnamese at an advanced level. (And this book is definitely advanced-it says “Early Intermediate,” but a book that teaches the words “feudal,” “mountain pass,” and “alluvium” in lesson one is not “early intermediate” by any stretch of the imagination!)
2. The book/CD package is priced very reasonably. Though I would have liked to see more audio practice on the CD, I am quite satisfied with what I got for my money.
3. This book avoids two faults of its predecessor: the obscure linguistic jargon is gone and there is more focus on things of general interest, such as Vietnamese poetry, economics, sports, history, and music.
4. This book lends itself fairly easily to letting you be your own professor, which you will have to do if you are studying independently! As I mentioned above, you can make your own exercises to practice the vocabulary items and the new grammar points, and this can even be fun. If you are studying this book independently, I suggest you do this and forget about trying to figure out the exercises in the book, which would probably wear down your enthusiasm!
5. Each chapter provides interesting cultural information and good things that anyone planning to visit or work in Vietnam should know.

My advice with this book is to be slow and thorough, review often, and if you are studying independently, find ways to make it fun for yourself. I’m glad I gave this book a chance, and I think any motivated advanced student of Vietnamese can use it with great profit.

Honestly the worse book. The dialogues are difficult and "intimidating" to tackle and the words to translate vocab are difficult to find, in sum the organization of the book is terrible. The other intermediate book by "Kim Oanh" is much better to learn from than this "essays of papers" called a book. "Chung ta noi" by Kim Oanh is much more interactive and easier to learn vocabulary.

Daido Loori provides an excellent introduction to the often neglected social-ethical dimension of Zen Buddhism. In writing that the precepts of the Buddha can transform our navigation of "the moral and ethical dilemmas of modern life . . . into something frankly wondrous: the life of the Buddha realized as our own life," Daido Loori reminds readers that the familiar enlightenment teachings of Shakyamuni are inseparable from "right action." Included here is a commentary on Master Dogen's Kyojukaimon, as well as Daido Loori's exposition of the precepts exemplified in the three "pure" acts--not creating evil, practicing good, and actualizing good for others--and discussion of koans on moral and ethical teachings. Daido Loori is critical of an Americanized Zen practice he calls buji Zen, the "I do whatever I want" approach to life. A must for every Buddhist collection

John Daido Loori just nails it. Without being dogmatic he lays out the essence of Buddhism in some of the clearest and precise language I have ever read, (and I've got a pretty good size library of books on Buddhism). For me it (finally) answers the question, "why bother with Buddhism?", which is expressed so well in the introduction: ". . . to live more fully in reality, and nourish one another with wisdom's complete confidence and compassion's tender and soothing hands."

Be aware that's it not easy reading and may be a bit much as a beginning book on Buddhism. (Pramananda's books might be a better place to start). But don't give up on it. I'm on my third reading and it still feels like I'm just scratching the surface.

Another gem from Daido Roshi

One of my teachers at ZCLA told me that serious Buddhism requires you to marinate yourself in the Dharma. Not just sitting zazen, but picking up bits and pieces as you go - like a fine guitar finish, you add many many thin coats to achieve the desired result. Shedding the everyday junk takes time, devotion to practice, and it takes a good teacher.

I've read several books by Daido Roshi, one of the outstanding Dharma heirs of Maezumi Roshi. With each book, the first thing I appreciate is his beautiful direct writing style. No ornaments, no heavy encoding; only clear statements of the Dharma delivered "oryoki" style - just enough words.

The Heart of Being: Moral and Ethical Teachings of Zen Buddhism (Tuttle Library of Enlightenment) is a must-read.
