In her desire to influence her husband and, through him, control the other wives, concubines, and entire household, she uses sex as her main weapon. The Golden Lotus lays bare the rivalries within this wealthy family while chronicling its rise and fall. It fields a host of vivid characters, each seeking advantage in a corrupt world.

The author of The Golden Lotus is Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng, whose name, a pseudonym, means "Scoffing Scholar of Lanling." His great work, written in the late Ming but set in the Song Dynasty, is a virtuoso collection of voices and vices, mixing in poetry and song and sampling different social registers, from popular ballads to the language of bureaucrats, in order to recreate and comment mordantly on the society of the time.

This edition features a new introduction by Robert Hegel of Washington University, who situates the novel for contemporary readers and explains its greatness as the first single-authored novel in the Chinese tradition. This translation contains the complete, unexpurgated text as translated by Clement Egerton with the assistance of Shu Qingchun, later known as Lao She, one of the most prominent Chinese writers of the twentieth century. The translation has been pinyinized and corrected.

About the Author
Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng wrote The Golden Lotus during the early years of the Wanji era (1573—1620) of the Ming Empire. Nothing certain is known of Lanling's life.

Clement Egerton was at various times a senior officer in the British army, an Anglican bishop, and a writer, editor, linguist, and prolific photographer, but he is best known for his enduring translation of The Golden Lotus.

Shu Qingchun boarded with Clement Egerton and his wife when he was a lecturer in Chinese at the School of Oriental Studies in London, but he became famous as the Beijing novelist and dramatist Lao She, whose best-known work may be Rickshaw Boy. He was killed, or committed suicide, during the Cultural Revolution.

Robert Hegel is the Liselotte Dieckmann Professor of Comparative Literature and a professor of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literatures at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Remarkable novel though does require strict concentration on character names and connections

This is an amazing read. The story itself is fundamentally simple. The life of a a man and his wives, concubines, party girls and his avarice. The big challenge is keeping pace with the huge number of characters. But it is worth it. The conniving, duplicity, disloyalty all make for a wide range of truly interesting stories within the main plot.

Strong on Show, Weak on Substance

While this book offers an attractive mix of history, philosophy and technique, it does better with the first two than it does with sword skills.
There are two problems that really make this book earn a low review. First, in many of the illustrations and even in the DVD, the author clearly seems to be using the blade of his sword to block his opponent's strike. Any sword fighter would know this is a great way to get your own blade dulled and chipped very quickly. For those who'd argue that this is just a poor camera angle, I feel it appears in too many images to be a mere coincidence, and it says something about the author that these pictures weren't taken more carefully.
Second, and to me far worse, is that for a book that claims to teach sword movements, there is absolutely no instruction in how to draw the sword! You can't get more fundamental than that, and yet this critical basic skill is nowhere to be found, neither in the book nor the DVD.
While the section on selecting and maintaining a sword is helpful, the gaps and mistakes in this book make it a risky choice, at best, for beginners.

The content of this book are most like photos of kata with very well-written illustration.

However, these photos are not in a good sequence and you have to watch the including DVD to get the detail of auther's motion.

I'm practicing Kendo and Iaido, and have some kenjishu DVDs from Japan.

From my point of view,
this book is great to take you through how Hollywood actors play katana in a crazy awesome cool way. (ex: Wesley Snipes in "Blade")

If you would like to explore the simple, plain traditional kenjishu, you may get lots of demos from different ryus on Youtube.

From the same publisher, "Mastering the Samurai Sword: A Full-Color, Step-by-Step Guide " would be a good reference book for a serious martial art trainer.

Great book with DVD!

The book and DVD are excellent instructions. It's simple, clear, easy to understand. Of course, you can't expect to pick up the $20 book of Samurai sword and become expert or samurai warrior next week or next month. Learning Martial Arts is a long journey required to be patient and discipline. If you already learned from other martial arts discipline, all foot works and movements are similar. I look at this book as another different skills set to learn from something different to add to my martial arts journey, and I appreciated Kohshyu Yoshida has spent his time to pass on his skills and knowledge.

The World in a pot of leaves

This 236 page book is such a delight to read; and one could read it over cover to cover many times over. I suspect that the second reading will likely commence only after a pot of tea has been boiled and ready by one's side. The editor has collected the wisest and most serene thoughts associated with tea into this book. The sayings come not only from Chinese and Japanese sages, but also western ones. Some are just a one-liner like, "A true warrior, like tea, shows his strength in hot water." Others are lengthier poetry. The book is also filled with numerous photographs and paintings of tea, tea parties, and utensils and crockery for the consumption of tea. The paintings are mainly Chinese and Japanese art. This is a small book and makes an excellent gift for any occasion.

Very nice book of tea quotations

I don't normally enjoy books of quotations because they tend to be overly sentimental, but the best way I can describe this book is nice. It's a nice way to spend a few moments or an afternoon reflecting on tea. It's got a nice selection of quotes from a very wide variety of sources like famous authors, ancient poets and modern entrepreneurs. Some of the quotes are moments in books where tea plays a role, I found these to be really enjoyable. Highly recommend as a gift, especially for tea lovers.

The remainder of the book offers haiku projects and exercises, accompanied by lengthy explanations, hints, and even word charts to help children create poems. The somewhat stilted color illustrations may put off older readers, and some exercises contain fill-in-the-blank sections, a format that's not ideal for library circulation. But Donegan presents a great deal of information clearly and with authority, and her enthusiasm for her subject is contagious, particularly when she describes what writing haiku encourages us to do: "see and appreciate the world around us more." Smart and iInspirational

First let me say this: I NEVER write reviews. But after seeing so few written for this title, I feel compelled to offer my praise.

After a half hour of perusing this book, I have
- Learned interesting tidbits about the history of haiku
- Gained several simple but brilliant insights into the spiritual nature of haiku
- Become determined to lead a haiku class at my sons' school
- Started planning for a seasonal haiku-writing party with friends

Put it this way: If you're interested enough in this book to actually read the reviews, then you must buy it. Must buy it.

Great Haiku for Children AND Adults

This book is a gem for adults as well as children. Not only does it clearly and simply explain the elements of haiku, and how to write good haiku, but it contains various projects to encourage children in writing. Included are projects that can be used to involve the whole family in exploring haiku together. As a grandmother who has in the distant past touched into haiku, I found the way this book approaches the subject actually inspired me to resume writing haiku. My granddaughters, 12 and 14, loved the book and are both exploring the medium.

This book is great for teachers who would like a simple guide to help them teach the art of haiku to their students. About the Author
Ronald G. Knapp has been carrying out research on cultural and historical geography in China's countryside since 1965. Currently SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the State University of New York, New Paltz, he is the author or contributing editor of more than a dozen books, including the award-winning Chinese Houses: The Architectural Heritage of a Nation.

When Function Meets Romantacism

If there ever were structures that should follow the maxim that form follows function it would have to be bridges. It is impossible to imagine a more practical structure. Yet, "Chinese Bridges" shows what happens when the Chinese bring their own romantic, over the top aesthetic to the art of bridge building. The result is architectural intoxication of the highest order.

"Chinese Bridges" begins by cataloging the different styles of bridges and then moves to the spiritual dimensions the Chinese embued in their bridges. It concludes with detailed studies of individual bridges. These bridges range from humble vernacular bridges in China's heartland to the beautifully ornate bridges of the country's elites.

Ronald Knapp has been studying the rural architecture of China since 1965 and is one of foremost historian's of China's vernacular architecture. He is a strong writer and his text is well complimented by Chester Ong's beautiful photographs. "Chinese Bridges" is a complementary volume to Knapp's "Chinese Houses". Both are beautifully produced volumes and are a must purchase for fans of Chinese and vernacular architecture. These are two of the finest books in my collection. Highly recommended.

A treasure for Chinophiles!

This most unusual book is my very favorite of all the China books in my collection! Ronald G. Knapp always turns out lovely books but this time he's outdone himself. China is full of marvelous and unique bridges and this book has gorgeous photos of many of them. What a visual feast. I am an artist and have visited China twice. Although I have LOTS of my own photos, this book will provide inspiration for years to come. Magnificent photography - photos I've never seen before. I was so sorry to get to the end of the book, I went back to the beginning and looked through it again! I love this book. If you love China and Chinese things, you'll love it too.

Bridges are for People

This book delights on several levels. First are the stupendous photographs with brilliant colors and clarity of details. Who knew there are so many interesting historical bridges in China scattered throughout the country in all geographical locations? The photos by Chester Ong are all of first-rate quality and they show both the bridges and the particular natural environments in which they were built. In a few cases historical photographs show how the bridges looked over a hundred years ago, to show us how the bridges have been repaired or tarted up to serve their contemporary communities.

The second delight is the informative text by Ronald Knapp. His explanations comment on the type of materials used, some of the construction or design principles employed, and the most outstanding feature of the bridge. Never ponderous, the commentaries flow smoothly as a compliment to each photograph. The reader will find their eyes darting from the commentary back to the photo again and again because the commentaries and photos are so well integrated.

The third delight is that the bridges are respected not only as historical artifacts or marvels of engineering technology, usually built by local people who had no knowledge of engineering theory, but bridges are explained in terms of their role within each local community. Of course bridges helped people cross rivers and wetlands, but they served in other ways as well. Many bridges had temples to local deities, so they were a site for worship, usually by people asking the gods for protection and help. Bridges could be the site of local markets, where foot traffic was heavy and the chance to sell was enhanced. Some bridges were so elaborate that a tea house was built in the middle where travelers could stop for some refreshment and to admire the view from the top of the bridge at its highest arc. Indeed, most of the photos show the interaction of local people with the bridge, so expect to see farmers, children, workers or tourists taking advantage of and having fun on the bridge.

In sum, I liked this approach that sets each bridge in a wider context. On almost every page one will find the author's and photographer's emphasis on the interaction of community, people, the economy and geography with the bridges. This gave me an appreciation for the many roles played by bridges. They were much more than utilitarian conveniences, and in some instances even became the center-point of their community.

Gr. 5-8. Although it's impossible to learn something as complex as karate through a book, this attractive volume will serve as a backup for kids interested in the activity or already in karate class. Rielly begins with a history of karate before going on to information about the uniform, including the meaning of the belt colors, the rules and etiquette of the dojo, and the interaction between student and teacher. The actual stances are clearly portrayed in watercolor-and-ink artwork that features both boys and girls in a number of stances and practicing thrusts and kicks. The book ends with advice for advancing in karate. A small note on the copyright pages advises readers to check with a doctor before proceeding with martial-arts training. There is also mention in the text that karate is to protect oneself, not cause harm, but more could have been made of that point. Boxes throughout offer definitions and training tips. Robin Rielly began training in the Japanese martial arts in 1959. He holds a sixth-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate from the Japan Karate Association (JKA) and a second-degree black belt in Shin Kage-ryu jujutsu from the Kobukan School in Yokohama, Japan. A graduate of the JKA Instructors' Training Institute, he is qualified as an official instructor, examiner, and tournament judge. He is the author of Complete Shotokan Karate, Secrets of Shotokan Karate, Japan's Complete Fighting System: Shin Kage Ryu, and Karate Basics.

Neatly done

I wrote a book about teaching martial arts and run a kid's karate class so I believe that I can speak with authority when I say that Rielly's book is well-rounded, easy to read and very child appropriate. It covers all the basics including a brief history of karate, why students might be interested in studying this martial art, an explanation of the karate uniform, description of the dojo (practice hall), discussion of etiquette, overview of warm up routines, explanation of basic techniques, and description of advancement testing practices. If your child is thinking about taking karate this book can help set his/her expectations and increase his/her chance of success. There is a small caveat about the appropriate use of karate in the front but I wish he'd spent a little more time on that particular aspect. New practitioners, especially younger ones, have a tendency to get into trouble for inappropriately trying out their skills on classmates at school. The sensei (teacher) should cover this but it is always good to know ahead of time. All in all, this book is a great overview for kids.

Boye Lafayette De Mente has been involved with Japan, China, and Korea since the late 1940s as a member of a U.S. intelligence agency, student, trade journalist, editor, and author working out of Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He is a graduate of Jochi University in Tokyo and The American Institute for Foreign Trade (now Thunderbird: The School of Global Management). His 70-plus books include Instant Korean, Instant Chinese, Survival Chinese, Survival Japanese, Asian Face Reading, Kata and Korean Business Etiquette.

Well done but with one glaring omission.

As far as phrasebooks go this is a superior effort. It has the right balance of basic grammar, essential travel phrases, and culture notes to get one going without being intimidated by the Korean language. Particularly useful was the section on counting which has different forms depending upon what is being counted. All words and phases are given in romanized form as well as in Korean script. The booklet concludes with a short but handy vocabulary list. What is missing is a pronunciation guide for the Korean alphabet. While the author does furnish a table indicating how Korean vowels are pronounced, it is presented in romanized form with no accompanying Korean script. This is unfortunate because it is relatively easy to follow Korean pronunciation when reading from written Korean. Despite this flaw, this is one of the better phrasebooks available.

Horrible HORRIBLE

This book is RIDDLED with errors and phases that you will never hear EVER! Give any Korean a red pen and this book and half the book will be crossed out. And there is so many phases that are correct grammatically but only written and never spoken. Worst ever.
