Better reading than a bag full of fortune cookies!
By A Customer
Twenty-four years after reading this book, its spirit still remains in me. I first read Tales of a Chinese Grandmother while in the third grade. Although I was raised in a traditional Chinese household, this book explained, with charm, the traditions and origins Chinese folklore.

This is not a college compendeum of every tradition, rather it is an endearing look at Chinese culture as explained by a grandmother to two young children as they grow up in old China.

Now the ancient Japanese Sakuteiki ("Notes on Garden Design")-the quintessential volume on Japanese garden design-is available for English-speaking readers, alongside gorgeous color photographs of Japan's most famous gardens. Infinite Spaces also includes practical advice and philosophical insights on building and maintaining water features such as miniature ponds and waterways, placing stones for excluding evil spirits and inviting the protection of benevolent deities, and much more. Great photos but very little Sakuteiki
By Eric Miller
This is a better than average coffee-table book about Japanese Gardens. The photos are for the most part excellent (a few are too dark). Many of the gardens shown are located outside of the Kyoto area and have seldom if ever been shown in other such (English language) books on this subject; this is a nice touch because it means that there is little overlap between this book and others. I had high hopes that the book would include a substantial (if not complete) translation of the Sakuteiki but despite the introduction which implies that this might be the case, it is not true. I would guess that less than 25% of the text of Sakuteiki is included, and the authors have rearranged the material into thematic sections to fit their own taste. This is a terrible pity becuase the 11th century gardening manual known by the name "Sakuteiki" is a very important point of reference in understanding the historical developement of Japanese gardens - sections from it are quoted by almost every book written on the subject, yet there is no generally available English translation of it. The 1976 translation by Shigemaru Shimoyama (publ. by Town & City Planners,Inc. Tokyo) was printed in a tiny edition of only 300 copies so the only way to read it is by borrowing a copy thru the academic inter-library loan program at your local public library. The way the authors of this book have rearranged the text into disjointed quotations (with widely varying typographic style & presentation) really does not do justice to the orginal material and is in considerable danger of reinforcing the old western stereotype of "pearls of wisdom from the inscrutable orient". I would suggest that you buy this book for the pictures alone and not pay too much attention to the text as currently presented. If the book is popular enough to merit a 2nd edition I hope the authors will reconsider the current format.

Very Inspiring
By Ronin
Infinite Spaces is lean on the commentary and abundant in beautiful full color photos displaying a wide variety of magnificent Japanese gardens. Some are from temples and others from private properties. This is not a repetitive book that displays the same Kyoto gardens like many that have been published.

While some are from Kyoto, Eric Miller's review suggests most of the gardens are located around Kyoto. This is not accurate at all. In fact, what's so incredible about this book is the authors traveled virtually the whole country and shot incredible gardens the whole length of Japan. Gardens are documented from the following regions: Nara, Shiga, Tottori, Ehime, Yamaguchi, Nagano, Nagoya, Tokushima, Yamagata, Tokyo, Ishikawa, Shizuoka, Fukuoka, Mie, Kumamoto, Wakayama, Iwate, Aomori, Yamanashi, Fukui, Niigata, Aichi, Kanagawa, and Gifu.

Awesome! Tons of great inspiration here. I highly recommend it.

Incredible photography!
By A Customer
The photos are so luscious--I can't think of a more appropriate term--that it's as if you're in these gardens. I believe all of the photos are of the ancient gardens in Kyoto, and if not, they're definately all from Japan. This book is truly one that was inspired by the Sakuteki, not an illustrated edition of the Sakuteki. You'll want it for dreamy page turning, not as an instruction book for your own gardens.

Widely practiced but not always understood, the Filipino martial arts have a rich history and distinctive character that have not fully been documented until now.

Written in the context of Philippine history and culture, Filipino Martial Culture uncovers the esoteric components of the Filipino martial arts and the life histories of the men who perpetuate them. Included are: the history of turbulence and war in the Philippines from prehistoric times to the present day; the culture of the Filipino martial arts, including warrior ethos and worldview, spirituality, folklore, and weaponry; biographical sketches of eighteen Filipino masters and descriptions of their respective fighting styles; and a comparative study of the ethos, ideology, and development of the Filipino martial arts in relation to the considerable martial traditions of India, China, and Japan.

In the course of his research, internationally renowned martial arts master and scholar Mark V. Wiley traveled the globe, interviewing top masters and recording their life histories, thoughts, and anecdotes. In addition, he collected 320 historical photographs and illustrations, including step-by-step sequences of the masters demonstrating the distinctive techniques of their particular martial styles. A classic reference for practitioners and researchers alike, this Filipino martial arts book is as much a definitive anthropological textbook as it is a practical guide to Arnis, Kali, Eskrima, and the other martial arts of the Philippines.

An Absolute Must!
By kgodhania@aol.com
There are so few trustworthy English-language books on the Filipino martial arts that the publication of a new one is a landmark. And when such a competent and respected practitioner as Mark V. Wiley produces it, then the occasion is one to be savoured. There have been many technical manuals on eskrima, arnis, and kali, and the library shelves are well stocked with them. Even so, there has always been a need for well-researched scholarly material relating to the history and culture of the Filipino arts. Unfortunately, such works are rare--as incidentally, are the people capable of writing them. Mark V. Wiley is an exception and this book has surpassed all my expectations. I've no doubt it will become the standard reference on the martial arts of the Philippines. The book is comprehensive and covers the history of turbulence and war in the Philippines from pre-historic times to the present day. It also examines the culture from which arises Filipino martial arts, the spirituality, folklore, and weaponry, plus biographical sketches of 18 Filipino masters, and descriptions of their respective fighting styles, and a comparative study of the ethos, ideology, and development of the Filipino martial arts in relation to the traditions of India, China, and Japan.Wiley also addresses the many misconceptions which surround the Filipino martial arts, informing us firstly that the terms kali, eskrima, and arnis are not synonimous and do not represent the same art. Kali did not exist during the pre-Spanish times. Then he tells us that not all Filipino arts are based on weapons training--in fact, there are quite a few strictly empty-hand arts. These statements are based on solid historical research. I recommend this book to serious martial artists, whilst for all practitioners of the Filipino martial arts, it is an absolute must!

A good addition to your FMA library
By A Customer
While I wish this book had the same relentless scholarly execution as Don Draeger's work (and I can think of very few even comparable for any art) on Indonesian arts, this becomes an even more difficult book to review because this is in reality more than one book: it is a book on Wiley's theories of the development of Filipino Martial Culture and a book which documents the oral history of FMA masters he has met in the Philippines and America (which I presume helped shape his conclusions).
"Filipino Martial Culture" works for me because it represents an effort to document the efforts of some well-known, some less-known, but no less significant figures in the Filipino Martial Arts community. Most students of eskrima, kali, arnis, etc. (like myself) are starved for information on the masters of the FMA. I suppose that is why I appreciate this book, because it makes the effort.
While this book may be controversial for its conclusions, biases, etc. and its emphasis on some masters over others, it does attempt to tell the story of the FMA through the voices of the people themselves. It is definitely not the final word and anybody interested in exploring should seek out books by Cabiero, Canete, Draeger, Imada, Inosanto, Presas, Sulite, and others to supplement their research in Southeast Asian fighting arts.

This is a great book
By Christoph Amberger
You know 'em when you see 'em...shelves upon shelves of how-to martial arts titles at your local book superstore -- all presented by humorless thugs posing in grainy black-and white photos. Like a well-rounded Alsatian farmer's wife, they grab you by the neck and begin stuffing junk down your throat until you put the book down, none the wiser, but with the feeling that your liver justgot a step closer to becoming kung fu foie gras...
There are exceptions, of course. But few martial arts authors have the cultural awareness and sensitivity to put their art into a larger picture, one that transcends the stances, blocks, and hits -- positions it as part of a living, three-dimensional cultural phenomenon.
One writer who was able to live up to the task was the late Donn Draeger. Of course, any Westerner who attempts to create a competent comprehensive appreciation of an Oriental martial culture not only requires the appropriate amount of expertise in the subject matter he chooses. He also has to have guts to face the "my-kung-fu-is-better-than-your-kung-fu" and "my-facts-are better-than-your facts" pundits (mostly Westerners, too) who know everything better in the first place, and then believe their particular sub-system was not represented to their liking. (Or that their edition of Baedeker's Manila represents a better reference than the research of original data in sources and translations of the respective author...)
Mark Wiley has guts -- and the discipline, humility, perseverance and expertise to create a trail-blazing work on the ins and outs of Filipino Martial Culture. Rivaling, and often even surpassing Donn Draeger in scope, his book is probably the most important martial arts title to hit the stores this decade.
Wiley's approach combines solid historical research skill (uniting archeological and folkloristic sources) with deeply personal knowledge of the culture (and cultures) he is writing about. By adding an anthropological element into his analysis, he manages to put his work into a globally human perspective -- as important to a practitioner of a Filipino martial art as to any other culture.
Himself an accomplished practitioner of arnis and eskrima, the Filipino stick fighting art, he could have chosen a less holistic approach and still written an excellent book. But there's little of Mark Wiley in this book, reflecting his respect of all other styles and schools (most of which are represented in generous chapters) as well as the self-effacing humility you would expect from a master.
Even if you're not particularly interested in Filipino stick fighting, this is one of the most worth-while additions to your fighting library you're going to make for the rest of this millennium.

Go! More Than a Game, by Peter Shotwell

Master the fascinating game of Go with this expert guidebook.

Go is a two player board game that first originated in ancient China but is also very popular in Japan and Korea. There is significant strategy and philosophy involved in the game, and the number of possible games is vast—even when compared to chess.

Go has enthralled hundreds of millions of people in Asia, where it is an integral part of the culture. In the West, many have learned of its pleasures, especially after the game appeared in a number of hit movies, TV series, and books, and was included on major Internet game sites. By eliciting the highest powers of rational thought, the game draws players, not just for the thrills of competition, but because they feel it enhances their mental, artistic, and even spiritual lives.

Go! More Than a Game is the guidebook that uses the most modern methods of teaching to learn Go, so that, in a few minutes, anyone can understand the two basic rules that generate the game. The object of Go is surrounding territory, but the problem is that while you are doing this, the opponent may be surrounding you! In a series of exciting teaching games, you will watch as Go's beautiful complexities begin to unfold in intertwining patterns of black and white stones. These games progress from small 9x9 boards to 13x13 and then to the traditional 19x19 size.

Go! More Than a Game has been completely revised by the author based on new data about the history of early go and the Confucians who wrote about it. This popular book includes updated information such as the impact of computer versions on the game, the mysterious new developments of Go combininatorics, advances in Combinatorial Game Theory and a look at the current international professional playing scene.

Not a laundry list
By A Go Teacher
I was disappointed to read the last comment since I know the author and what he was trying to do and, as a go teacher, have seen his technique work on many people. As he stated on the first page ("How to Use This Book"), he was not trying to write a book that would just be thrown away after its contents were learned. That is for laundry list books and there are several hundred of them available in English for various stages of one's go career. What he wanted to do was to introduce readers to the dynamics of go playing--go is a game, after all, and not a course in school. What he advised the reader to do was to go as far as possible through the games in the book until they were stuck, then play alot (and, yes, also look at the laundry list books!), then come back, play some more and etc. That way, say over a period of time (and not just with one reading, as it looks like some commentators have done), one would get the feel for playing on, first simple 9 x 9 boards, then 13 x 13 and finally the full, complex, 19 x 19 size. By the time one finished, one would be completely conversant with any go player, and know much of go's 4,000 year-old culture and history. That doesn't mean you would *know* all of the techniques--only by playing and studying can you do that--but you would *know about* most of them and, you would also know what you *didn't know* and needed to. In other words, because of the immense amount of ground and the different levels it covers, the book is meant to be a launching pad into the world of go, and that it does admirably and certainly far better than any other beginner's book!

Lots of Taoist mysticism and a fair introduction to Go
By David C. Oshel
There are two games of Go, the forest-and-trees welter of confusion that a beginner sees, and the game within the game that everyone else comes to terms with. Shotwell's book can bring you past the boulders of confusion and leave you standing beside the deep water. Whether you swim or not... :) He's also a geisha, in the well-known Reischauer/Culture of Japan academic style, so much of the book is full of reverent Taoist and Kung Fu mysticism which may be fun, but should be transcended as soon as you "see" the inner game. It's beside the point. Bottom line, I like this book. It nudged my game forward. That said, if you want to learn Go, you should get a good computer Go game, like Go4++ (Windows, commercial) or Sente Goban (Mac OS X, freeware), dumb it down and play until you win. Then come back to this book. There's a lot of satisfaction in that first win against a computer, and it helps the book make sense.

Way above average
By A Customer
I am a long-time tournament chess player who is seeking to get beyond just knowing the basic rules of Go. This new title seems to offer a lot more bang for the buck than others I've reviewed. It even looks like a better buy than any single volume in the highly-regarded Janice Kim series (which has apparently risen in price due to high demand). Cost being no object, it would surely be better to own the first two or three books in that series, but given the price I think this offers better value in a single volume.
It's nicely written and handsomely laid out, and seems quite up-to-date (with information about playing on the Internet and the current [weak] state of Go-playing software).
I have over 250 chess books and consider myself quite knowledgeable in that field. This is, however, my first Go book. I fully acknowledge not having the experience to definitively judge quality as well as a long-time tournament player or teacher could. But having been around the block in life and having looked at a lot of Go titles before choosing, I can pretty strongly say that you could do a LOT worse.
In its price range, this fine new book could well become THE one to have.

Highlighted with over 60 illustrations, The Sword Polisher's Record: The Way of Kung-Fu, is an anthology of the monthly column, is organized into eight inter-connected sections, each examining a different aspect of kung-fu including its foundations, theories, important concepts and principles related to kung-fu styles and forms, usage, and training, and discussions on the future of kung-fu and it's place in our lives.

Review
"This is a book that should be on every martial artist's shelf, taken down often for reference. It is a book that should be discussed: with colleagues, with instructors, with fellow students. It is a book to be read more than once."— Plum Publications

"Very well written book of stories and philosophies."— BestJudo.com

"I think that Adam Hsu makes some convincing arguments. He has solid points and clearly states his ideas, not only with examples from his past but also with analogies that a westerner could understand. Some of the things that he said seemed to be a little one sided, however others made perfect sense. I would recommend this book for any one who is interested in learning about a famous Chinese martial art."— Robert Agnew, DCTaekwondo

"I find that this book is greatly helpful when in the hands of a novice martial artist seeking Kung-fu instruction."— A Ronin's Review

About the Author

In 1990 he founded the non-profit Traditional Wushu Association, dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and perfection of traditional kung-fu. He has been featured on the cover of over a dozen martial arts magazines throughout the world, and his monthly columns have appeared in Black Belt, MA Training, and Wu Shu Kung-Fu magazines.

An Excellent Historical & Philosophical Overview
By C. J. Hardman
Hsu's book dispells many myths, including the story of the Shaolin Temple being the ancient home of Chinese martial arts. He discusses many topics including teacher student relationships, the difference between "Northern" and "Southern" style kung fu, forms, two man fighting sets, and more. The great pity is that there are not more serious books of this caliber on Chinese (or other!) martial arts.

This is NOT a how-to book, there are no sequences of techniques or instructions on forms. It is however, an invaluable aid to those seeking helpful factual information on Chinese martial arts, written in a straightforward and non-self-promoting way. I have bought copies of this to send to friends who are studying kung-fu in remote areas, away from the constant supervision of a teacher. It serves as a good textbook for beginning and advanced alike, doing away with superstitious information and offering a well thought, gracious and full view of the depth of Chinese martial arts. I hope Adam Hsu offers his other Chinese-language books up for translation in the near future, he is truely someone worth listening to.

Are you REALLY studying KUNG FU??
By Graydon M. Webster
An excellent collection of articles from start to finish.
After reading this book, I got a sinking feeling in my stomach that I might just be "playing around". I've been to different schools and practiced on my own, never thinking quite as deeply as I needed to about Kung Fu. Mind you, I thought pretty deeply about it, but after reading Polishing the Sword, I think maybe I need to spend MORE time training and less time "playing" Kung Fu.
His articles are dead-on, he politely skewers myths, delusions, phoney Kung Fu and detrimental Kung Fu practices. Not many books on Kung Fu take the time to analyze what the Kung Fu student must BECOME in order to achieve Kung Fu.
Not many books focus on finding the right school, choosing the right style and developing the proper attitude and respect for the art.
This should be required reading for any Kung Fu student. It teaches no forms, tells no fairy tales, it is for the modern, Western Kung Fu student to study and re-study in his/her quest for authentic Kung Fu.
Also, it approaches the MUCH needed subject of Martial Arts vs. Fighting Ability. That alone was worth the price of the book.
Are you Wu Shu or are you a Poseur?

Very well written
By Amazon Customer
It is one of those books that I will refer to over and over again to improve my taichi practice.

Kobayashi has not only summarised his learning from great masters in the lineage of Dr. Chi Chiang Tao, Cheng Man Ching and Yang Cheng Fu, but also researched with other great teachers in the Yang style taichi.

Stunningly gorgeous book, filled with great layouts and lots of useful info
By Gdoreen
I don't normally write reviews online, but I just had to praise this book and author. First, it is visually stunning... like eye candy. Nearly EVERY page is gorgeous and that's rare even for scrapbooking or papercrafting books. Second, it's not just crammed with great ideas, tips, and layouts but it also is chocked full of very interesting information about Asian design, culture, the history of paper, Asian fabric designs, etc. There is a great resources section as well. If you've been on a trip to Asia and want to scrapbook it, this is a must-have.

The book is very well organized and written. You can tell the author, editor and publisher nurtured and invested in this publication. I own several books on card making and scrapbooking (around 30 or so) and among those are two other books on Asian papercrafting... but they all pale in comparison to this book.

I first saw Scrapbook Asian Style in a bookstore while on vacation in Singapore. I was so tempted to buy it, but it was a bit pricey (it was listed at more than three times the Amazon price and I was still tempted). As soon as I got home though (and that was weeks later, after visiting several other Asian countries) I took a chance and went online in search of Scrapbook Asian Style. That it stayed on my mind that long is testament to how great a book it is. I was delighted to find it on Amazon. It's one of my favorite treasures from my vacation and also one of my favorite books on the subject. I can stare at pages in this book over and over and it never gets old. Yes, I love it that much.

I highly recommend it-- even if you aren't scrapbooking an Asian trip. The layouts are universal. There is a simplicity and yet a boldness of color and design that is very intoxicating. I've had this book for several months and I'm glad I purchased it every time I flip it open. I'm certain you will be too.

Phenomenal
By Fredo
I can't praise this book/set enough. The instructions are incredibly easy to follow, and they are almost all beginner-intermediate. Plus the book is huge so everything is nice and big and clearly shown. I've been doing origami for a number of years, and have done my share of complex "insane" models, but I prefer the simpler models that can be made for friends "on the spot." This book is extraordinary for anyone who wants to add beautiful, unique, yet simple models to their repetoir. I can't count how many people's days have been brightened at receiving a Unicorn from this book. Some of the models are extremely simple (Golden Goose), others somewhat tedious (Kraken), however the bulk of this book is beginner-intermediate, fun to fold, and wonderful for everyone. The Dragon is made from a basic Bird Base, and is excellent for a simple, elegant version of a Dragon that takes at most 5 minutes, (intermediate/expert folders read 2 minutes). The Griffon takes a bit longer, but is still easy and looks incredibly beautiful. The Unicorn is exquisite and realistic, yet easy to make, etc etc. I found the hardest one to be Cerberus, which took me about 10 minutes, but on the second go it took less than 5 and remains one of the neatest ideas I've seen in any book.
The only drawback to this set is that the paper is very plain and limited in color, but for little cost one can find thousands of beautifully designed papers to really bring these to life. Nearly all of these models are "corners show," so I highly recommend "Harmony Paper". Don't miss this or any of LaFosse's books!

LOVED THE MYSTICAL CREATURES....
By Amazon Customer
I'm waiting to find a book that is for beginner to intermediate. it seems like you go from way simple to complex with no in-betweens !

I love this book for the unusual mystical creatures in it. It is just fun to look through and try at least. Most animal origami books are all the same animals. This one jazzed me up, but I still had a hard time finishing any of them. I think the pegasus or phoenix was easy and it looked nice too.
