More robust version of the great earlier addition

The Tuttle flash cards are my favourite set because they include a translated phrase on the back. But I'd used the earlier edition of the cards so much that I had worn them out (the corners got frayed to pieces and they'd accumulated coffee stains). The content on this new edition is as good as those old set, but now it is made from tougher laminate that resists creasing and dirt & has rounded corners. That means I can review the cards for weeks & carry them around with me without expecting them to get damaged. It's clear that the set has been designed after a lot of user feedback. They even come with a ring, which is presumably intended to prevent them from getting lost. I don't use that ring because it's inconvient for flipping & re-ordering and is bulky. Still, it would be handy for some students.
The actual content of the cards is also a slight improvement from the earlier set, with a hand written type face on the back of the cards as well as the front (but it was fine in the older version too).
I've given this five star review after using the cards for about two months and suffering no loss of cards from wear. I bought the box only for the cards, and haven't investigated the CD at all. Since the highest review I can give is five I don't need to know what is on that to complete this review. I'd strongly recommend buying the cards, and a free CD comes with them.

So far really good! I'm still navigating my way through the flash cards. For such a difficult language, it reveals a way of learning that is quite old, but with the ANKI system of language learning, it puts a new (fun!) face on learning.

Perfect for learning how to read and write Mandarin characters

I've been using a book to learn these which is quite helpful. The flash cards are just the thing to help with memorization. Some of the Chinese characters are, for some reason, very easy to remember after the first introduction. I'm not sure why that is, but I've had no trouble with recalling about half of them that I've been introduced to. The other half...well, that's a different story. I have to keep studying them and trying to give myself a tool to recall their meaning. What the cards do is allow me to separate out those words that I have trouble with from those I don't, so that I'm not repeating the stuff I already have down cold and do not need to review. It saves a lot of time and effort and unnecessary repetition to have these. I tried making my own flash cards, but these come with some great disks that help you to get the pronunciations right the first time. Chinese is a tonal language and sounds sing-song-y for a good reason: It is! The Pinyin (Romanized spellings) have accent marks over many of the vowels -- they are there to tell you how to pronounce the sound and there are at least five different ways to do that. My comprehensive dictionary has several pages for the spelling (without accents) "xie"--so, if you do not use the correct tonal pattern, you could be saying just the opposite of what you mean to say. Xie(4) xie means "thanks"....can you imagine how easy it would be to mess that up? The flash cards are numbered and there is a printed cross-reference so that you can find one easily enough if you want to change the order (also an easy means to make notation of such actions), and there are recorded pronunciations which are worth the cost of the box alone. The cards also give examples of the word in usage--very helpful, indeed. I would call these a "must have" if you are just starting out learning Mandarin. The first set are the more commonly used words and I would guess that they comprise about 50% of the Chinese you will need to know.

Book for people with a sense of humor

I bought this book as a gift for my boyfriend, who is half Filipino. I took one look at the title and figured it was right up his alley. It IS called "MAKING OUT" in Tagalog after all. That, along with the male and female symbols on the cover give you a huge clue as to what to expect inside. Obviously, this book was made for those with a sense of humor. It is not a grammar book, but a phrase book...and the phrases range from practical to funny to downright raunchy. Perfect for anyone who has a slightly warped sense of humor, and those who are not easily offended. If you are looking for useful phrases you can use to get around on your visit to the Philippines, and you don't plan on picking up a one night stand, you need a different book entirely. But if you want to have a laugh, and make your Filipino friends crack up- get this one for sure. The best moment we had with this book was sitting in his Filipino mom's kitchen, reading the raunchy phrases to her, and watching her laugh and say "oh my gosh!" A very fun book!

TAGALOG IS MY FIRST LANGUAGE THIS IS SIMPLY A BAD LANGUAGE BOOK

I bought this book for my friend who wants to learn tagalog. However I decided not to give it and just return it to the store since it has a rediculous translation and interpretation of the tagalog phrases to the point of awkwardness. A tagalog speaker would find it funny to hear someone say some of the phrases in this book. This is not the way people in the Philippines talk in tagalog inside or outside the bedroom. I cannot now pinpoint where he got it right because I returned the book, but I am telling you, You will look stupid to be saying the phrases as how the author interpreted it.

About the Author
Teri Tom, MS, RD, has spent 10 years and over 1,000 hours in private study with Sifu Ted Wong and is one of the world's most knowledgeable instructors on the lattermost stages of Bruce Lee's martial art, Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do. Watered down JKD Kickboxing

The title of this book really should have been Jun Fan Kickboxing simply because of its narrow focus. In reality, it's a rather watered down version of JKD . While Tom does outline some techniques in detail, the book is incomplete and one would be better off with Chris Kent's JKD Kickboxing. The book is marred by a number of contradictions that leads one to believe that her understanding of JKD is very limited. She makes the case that JKD was solely derived from Boxing and Fencing and devoid of Wing Chun. This is a major contradiction to every original student from Lee's final school in LA. She disputes that other arts influenced Lee in his development as Dan Inosanto claims, but then she has an entire chapter devoted to kicks that obviously come from Thai boxing and Savate and have no relationship to Boxing or Fencing. One is prompted to ask "so where did these kicks come from?" Her assumption that grappling played no part in JKD is also incorrect. According to Bruce Lee's original student Larry Hartsel, a man who also studied privately with Lee, there were 33 distinct grappling moves developed by Lee for JKD and was very interested in ground fighting towards the end of his life. Teri Tom's assumption that if Lee didn't show something to Ted Wong, then it wasn't part of JKD is poor journalism to say the least. If any reader is truly interested in acquiring an honest view of JKD, they should study from as many "original" sources as possible.
The book is also marred by her political attempt to place her own instructor as the highest authority in JKD. She justifies this position with the fact that Ted Wong met Bruce Lee in 1967 and had the most private lessons logged in Lee's Day Timer. Unfortunately she fails to mention that Dan Inosanto began working with Lee three years before Wong. Lee and Inosanto had a relationship that evolved beyond teacher slash student and not every meeting was a "logged" lesson. She also fails to mention that while Wong was given a level 2 certification by Lee, Dan Inosanto was given a level 3. A level 3 was the certification given by Lee that allowed one to teach his art and Bruce had handpicked Inosanto to run his LA "Chinatown" school. Ted Wong was a devoted student of Lee's and Lee was known for focusing on what each student needed individually. Sifu Wong had never studied any kind of martial arts before he met Lee so Lee was working from the ground up and focused on Wong having a basic structure. Many feel that's why Wong developed the idea that JKD was more of a fixed and distinct style. Alas, if Lee had only lived longer and Wong could have studied long enough to have been certified to a level 3. Then perhaps he would have had a greater appreciation of the deeper philosophical aspects of JKD. In the words of Bruce Lee "Therefore, any attempt to define Jeet Kune Do in terms of a distinct style ... is to completely miss its meaning." And that's the sad truth about this book. Ted Wong wrote in the foreward that it was a loss that the original students didn't collaborate after Lee's death and pool their JKD knowledge together. If Wong had discussed more with other original students, perhaps this book would not have been limited to a few basic kicks and strikes, but might have been more inclusive of the totality and beauty of Lee's art.

The Fundamentalist of JKD

This is a book that's hard to rate. From a purely technical standpoint, this text is actually pretty good. Much like "The Straight Lead" it covers few techniques in the tiniest details. This approach means that the reader will not get a lot of variety, but will be exposed to a very in-depth look at some of the basics of JKD.
But whereas the technical section is overall well done, the theoretical part of Tom's work is downright awful. In her hands, Bruce Lee's beautiful philosophy is turned into yet another dogma to be followed religiously. This is the worst betrayal of Lee's philosophy one could imagine. Tom is right that many JKD practitioners misuse the freedom of thought and the creativity that Lee encouraged, but her solution is worse than the disease: eliminate the very freedom of thought and creativity that's at the core of Lee's vision. Like a religious fundamentalist, Tom believes modern practitioners should do nothing but follow blindly what Bruce Lee did--which is antithetical to what Lee actually said when he explicitly stated that JKD was a continuous process of research, and not yet another "style".
Perhaps less important, but nonetheless disturbing, is Tom's argument that Lee fashioned JKD entirely out of Western sources (mainly boxing and fencing). In doing so, she completely dismisses the importance of wing chun (and of many other arts that Lee experimented with) in the genesis of JKD (btw, where do all the JKD kicking techniques come from then? From fencing?!?).
I'd love to support Tom's work in producing a very thorough technical manual, but her arrogant dogmatism is too much for me to bear.

Very well made, extremely badly done

I am being generous giving this book two stars. I should give it only one, but the book is so well done and the pictures so clear and numerous that I think this book's layout and quality should be a standard for future martial arts publications. For those reasons only I gave it two stars. Everything else in this book is either useless or outright terrible, both in technique and diction. Teri Tom's bigotry towards every other martial art, especially the "non-Ted Wong school" of Jeet Kune Do, is at once frustrating, maddening, and embarrassing. She writes about and SELECTIVELY quotes Sigung Bruce Lee as if he were a deity who is not to be questioned, even close to forty years after his untimely death. Tom (and her trainer/marketer Ted Wong) claim to be truly teaching what Bruce Lee was teaching at the end of his life, which may have some semblance of truth, but it is only a piece of the Jeet Kune Do puzzle. The evolution of Jeet Kune Do as a concept and Jun Fan Gung Fu as an art evolved greatly between 1967 and the early 1970's, yet she cannot seem to imagine that it would have evolved from the time of Lee's death to today. In addition, her ignorance of how and what the other, "charlatan" Jeet Kune Do instructors teach leads her to say false, misleading, and slanderous things about them. Unfortunate...

The book itself has very few actual "techniques", and most seem to be focused on the straight lead once again. I have no problem with this, as in depth studies of few techniques can be just as enlightening as a book with myriad techniques. The problem is how these techniques are portrayed. For all the years Tom has trained with Wong, her technique is as sloppy as someone who has just begun: flailing arms while kicking, landing with extremely wide legs, coming in with her chin up, dropping her arms to her hips when throwing an uppercut or straight lead. This can lead to bad habits to those who don't know any different. I regret spending money on this book, honestly. I wish I could have looked through it before I ordered it. I do NOT recommend this book to anyone, Jeet Kune Do practitioner or not, as I feel it fails to deliver what it promises. Her bitter remarks towards others is also pathetic, to say the least, and has no place in this book. It is truly a shame that a book so well made can be such a waste.

THE BEST CHINESE ASTROLOGY BOOK EVER WRITTEN

This one's a classic! I cannot tell you how old my first copy is, but this book has been a permanent resident on my bedside table for at least 20 years. It used to be called CHINESE CHANCE. But apparently Suzanne White changed publishers midstream and re-published it as CHINESE ASTROLOGY PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Whatever happened,it's a fantastically funny and easy-to-read book, full of pungent stories and anecdotes about people of each Animal sign. Bt the time you finish reading it, you will not only know the basics of Chinese Astrology, but you'll know lots more about yourself and those around you. I never let my copy out of the house. It's my second Bible.

A CLASSIC!

Suzanne White is really the high priestess of Chinese Astrology. Some people might not like her breezy style and those personal anecdotes she throws around, but I LOVE her writing and her simple way of presenting complex information. For once, I understood what my Dragon sign means in real life. I am a better person for owning all of Suzanne White's books - especially Plain and Simple. It's a classic!

About the Author
Alan Watts was born in England in 1915. He was an Episcopalian priest who became the spokesperson for Eastern religions during the late 1950s and tumultuous 60s. His first book, The Spirit of Zen, however, was written in the 30s when Watts was just 20 years old. He went on to write more than twenty other books. He died in 1973.

Potential Game Changer for Many Readers

I have a few short (nonfiction) books that I consider "elite" and worth owning. Among my few favorite short works, Boethius' "The Consolation of Philosophy" and Voltaire's "Candide," both fiction, is Alan Watts' "The Tao of Philosophy," a rarely potent nonfiction of similar length. Especially for those who have had no exposure to Eastern philosophy and religion, this book has the ability to induce in the reader a radical shift in perspective, a gestalt switch. For those with some exposure, this book may be enlightening, bringing into stark contrast the fundamental differences in perspectives between Eastern and Western thinking. I was among the latter, having already been exposed, and so I found Watts' text as an immense product of, most likely, an excessively deep and sustained reflection about the psychology and philosophy that goes into innate Western and Eastern modes of thought. I should emphasize the former, the psychological component. My understanding is that Watts was trained in psychology, and that this lecture series was given to an audience of practicing psychologists. This makes the text a very interesting excursion, for, even if one has reflected upon the nature of comparison between Eastern and Western thought, one is sure to find many valuable psychologically nuanced points therein.

If anything, this text is not a deep exfoliation of ideas, but something to stir our pots. The only complaint I would have for this text is its short length, but, again, I think its function is to stir our pots. What's more, the plenitude of gems, in the form of aphorisms, is enough to occupy most readers for a lifetime, because of the value and objective importance of the points Watts' brings to the fore. Some of the revealing defenses Watts makes (e.g., that "scientistic" attitudes are just a fade, and so we should not scoff at more humane perspectives), and some of the distinctions he develops (e.g., classicists and romanticists, albeit in much more flowery terminology), are downright brilliant.

In general, I recommend this book to all, scholars at university down to middle schoolers, and everyone in between. Most of all, the at-large intellectual will probably find the most use for this book, being intelligent and fairly well-read enough to understand it, yet a free enough thinker to employ its wisdom.

I love Alan Watts but I just don't really like listening to lectures. This book fits perfectly; it takes some of his great talks on the topic of Tao and the relationship between nature and man, edits and transcribes them into a neat little package.

Boye Lafayette De Mente does it again

Such a prolific writer of fascinating and interesting books all of which as so easy to read and understand. No mumbo jumbo or faffy long technical words, just GREAT writing.

I've only become aware of this writer over the last couple of years and must have all of his books by now, his style is so infectious, you just have to investigate them. He's just a natural when it comes to explaining the Japanese & their mysterious way of life - one would think he was a native.

This book was written for an audience who may be interested in doing business with Japan. The truth is that this book is an absolute "cracker" for anyone interested in life and how to learn to live it properly.

The author does get a little carried away at the end of most chapters and gives his personal opinions - as I'm doing now - but in spite of all of that I loved it. It could even make it onto a school curriculum.

Make sure that you also check out his "Samurai Strategies: 42 Martial Secrets from Musashi's Book of Five Rings" - a successful book on how to achieve successful & happy & fulfilling life.

In this book, De Mente attempts to identify the positive factors in Bushido that were primarily responsible for the astounding economic success of the Japanese, and still today play a vital role in their economic prowess.

For anyone who wants to succeed with dealings with Japanese businesses, or who has an interest in applying the character traits in the samurai code of ethics to enhance their own personal skills and performance, this book will be an enjoyable read and an interesting success manual.

The book has 59 short chapters, making it very easy to read and digest. Each lesson could be pondered for a much greater length of time than it takes to read the short chapter. Boye Lafayette De Mente has been involved with Japan, Korea, and China since the late 1940s and is the author of more than 30 books on these three countries. I have enjoyed a number of his books, and this one especially so.

As a martial artist, former soldier with the U.S. Army, and someone who follows and teaches not only the physical skills of self-defense, but also the warrior traditions and philosophies, I found this book extremely valuable not only to help improve my own skills to succeed in personal and business endeavors, but also to study, apply and assist with my own personal warrior philosophy and teachings.

A useful survey of the buddhist thought

I've never read anyone else who weaved together all of the Pali and Sanskrit literature so thoroughly. Fairly soon after Buddha's death Buddhism split into many schools. Chunks of the literature from these different schools still exist making the actual situation more complex than the usual idea that "the Pali Canon is oldest and everything else came later." Cheetham weaves together a single version of Buddhism from the variety of sources. It's a delightful job of reconstruction whether you agree with him on every point of not :) Well worth the read for any serious student, but not exactly the first book one should read on Buddhism.

There is a sequel to this!

This epic, masterful treatment of Buddhism is so thorough and complete that it can almost put you off of Buddhism. Introductory Buddhist texts these days are seemingly more numerous than grains of sand at times - but this book is NOT an introduction. The endless multitude of popular "introductory" Buddhist writings in circulation today are very well-intentioned (usually designed to help us Lay people navigate our lives NOT to become enlightened, necessarily, but rather are pointed to the lesser, more common-sense goal of minimizing any karmic harm we might unknowingly be creating during such a spiritually dark era.) Fundamentals of Mainstream Buddhism, however, is The Whole Thing - it lays the problem of delusion at your feet in understandable language, and then tells you all that is involved in becoming enlightened. A to Z. It is exquisite, elegant, knowledgeable and when you are done reading, you will be appropriately intimidated. No wonder the Buddha hesitated to tell anyone - the Path that goes all the way isn't for the timid or the unskilled. I'm so relieved that the Buddha decided to teach - and I'm so pleased that there are easier teachings out there than what is pointed to in this fantastic text.

Flash Cards on Steroids

I've never seen a line of flash cards as well thought out, organized, and executed as the ones produced by Tuttle. Like the cards in the first series, the vocubulary was selected based on its frequency count in a selection of modern works. Each word is shown in Arabic script and English transliteration along with a non-trivial sample sentence (also in script, transliteration and translation). And four words derived from similar roots are also included on each card. Need I say more ?

Just as good as Vol 1

In Volume 1 one side of the card listed a word in Arabic script with 4 related words and the other side listed the 5 words and an example sentence in Arabic, English and Romanised Arabic. Now in Volume 2 the Arabic script is no longer written on the reverse side for the 4 related words. Perhaps this does away with some redundancy and clutter but I'd prefer it if the transliterations were dropped altogether.

At least one vocabulary word that was in Volume 1 was included again in Volume 2.

Notwithstanding the oversights, Volume 2 is an exceptionally handy tool for any student looking to add a further 2239 words to their Arabic vocabulary.

I wish that this new volume would have the 4 other words in the front of the card written in Arabic in the back instead of transliteration...that is distracting to the studying. My Volume one wher eit had it in Arabic and English was better...if you are going to pick one it should just be the Arabic.
