Easy Reading; Straight to the Point

Very good book. I work in a Korean Co. Very usefull points. Great opportunity to know in theory what I faced in practical reality. Lots of things are clearer now...! A very good book for starters in Korean culture interface. Covers from general aspects to details of daily situations. Easy to read. Subjects and capters ordered very well. A must-have-book for those who intend to work in Korea or in Korean Companies abroad. I strongly recommend. AV.

Useful not just for business

Not bad at all. Chapters are broken up into sizeable chunks that are insightful and easy to read. My biggest complaint stems from the fact that despite the author's extensive knowledge of the Korean language, he refrains from using any Hangul in the book - only romanization or transliteration of key terms. This makes for a sloppy glossary.

Don't let this questionable editing mistake steer you away from this book - not only does it contain nugget after nugget of valuable information, it also contains a fantastic summary of ancient and modern Korea wrapped up in about 12 pages.

The author does well to tie in his knowledge of Japanese culture and business as it plays a big role in Korea. However, I would have liked more taboos and "do-not-do-this-you-impatient-foreign-businessperson" tidbits - although the book has plenty. I suppose the best feature of the book is it's instant pick-up-and-read aspect however, if the proper context isn't taken into account, I'm afraid that some of this book might be forgettable - which is a shame.

Perhaps it goes without saying that this book is applicable to anyone living in Korea and has thousands of applications outside the business world. A great read

Great for an Untapped Market

As an individual who works in many different Asian countries, I am always on the lookout for books that help explain business culture in foreign countries to help with my own understanding of living and working in another country. This is exactly what Korean Business Etiquette seeks to accomplish.

The book is broken down to the T about many different facets of Korean business culture, including an essential brief history of Korea's past*. The author does a wonderful job not only identifying important characteristics but also explaining the reasons behind them. Though it is mainly aimed for foreign workers in higher positions, employees working for Korean companies can also find use in the information presented.

On a personal note, I am currently working for a Korean company and had some very large misunderstandings about the management here. Though not completely cleared up, the cultural differences are at least translucent and much more understandable than before.

I truly do feel like the author made a great effort to exhaustively cover every major issue related to working as a foreign manager in Korea.

With these positive aspects, I would like to take a moment to issue a few constructively critical comments:
-*By far the biggest error I have seen is the author's brief history of the Korean war. Unfortunately, he made a grave error in his timeline which appears at the beginning of the book. Due to this serious error, it was difficult for me to take the rest of the book seriously. I would like to advise the author to carefully rewrite the chain of events in the Korean war section.

-One aspect I feel that is missing from this great book is a more personal approach. In one book I have read about working culture in Thailand, the author includes many personal anecdotes related to the topics being covered. With his close AMCHAM connections, I would have liked to have seen brief accounts written by some of these CEOs (who could remain anonymous) related to the topics covered in different sections. These personal accounts could explain their mistake in a situation and more importantly, how they took the authors advice to rectify the situation.

In the end, I definitely recommend this book to anyone living and working in Korea, whether they are a senior level exec. or entry level worker.

Compelling Portrait of Discrimination

My reget is that there are 7 (or more) volumes of this story that haven't yet been translated into English. When I recently visited the Buraku Liberation Center in Osaka, Japan, one of the staff members showed me copies of all of the volumes in Japanese. One of my other regrets is that I am just about illiterate in written Japanese and thus must depend upon English translations.

Fortunately, this first volume of the entire story is readily available in this fine English translation. The author, Sumii Sue was, herself, not a Burakumin. However, being a woman in a male-dominated society, she would understand some of the elements of prejudice and discrimination. She was a social activist who fought for the rights of the oppressed throughout her own life.

The main character is a school-age boy named Hatanaka Koji. This first volume of the story takes place in the very early years of the 20th century. Koji was born in the discriminated-against Buraku village of Komori. He is very intelligent and wants to do well in school. However, he faces those who wish to treat him in a degrading way, calling him and his fellow villagers names i.e. "dirty," "four-legged beast," and similar. Also he faces unfair punishment and discriminataion from some of his teachers.

This account also depicts Koji's family members and others in his village. His mother is a widow; her husband had been killed in battle during the Russian-Japanese war. The family also lives with the grandmother, who recounts stories from old feudal days when she and her relatives had to live as members of the untouchable "eta" ("extreme filth") caste. One aspect I noticed is that Sumii portrays her female characters in very human ways, rather than in typical female stererotypes. These are not the "sweet Japanese maidens" that we see in too many fictional works. These are very strong people who face their struggles with fortitude.

Discrimination against the Burakumin is an issue that is not very well-known these days. Many Japanese deny that this sort of prejudice still exists; some deny that it ever existed. However, many people of Buraku origin have to hide their ancestry and where they live. This is to protect themselves from job and marriage discrimination. The current Prime Minister of Japan recently was reported as telling a Burakumin member of parliament who is open about his ancestry that no Burakumin could ever advance in government.

This book is a very gripping account of a piece of Japanese history that very few people are aware. I was told that the story continues with Koji's youth, that as a young adult he ends up joining the Suiheisha (Leveller's Society), one of the first of the Burakumin civil rights organizations. I want to read all about this. I hope that the other volumes will soon be translated.

I am very happy with this book

I am very happy with this book. I am currently trying to learn Mandarin before returning to china this year for a second trip. This book is very helpful for beginners to get the basics you need when traveling to a new place. The book provides pronunciation guides and has both Pinyin and characters as you go along. i use this as supplemental material to actual language learning course work and it is great since it gives you the more useful vocabulary that you don't usually get in a class or through online tutorials.

Dr. Robert J. Lang has studied origami for more than forty years. He is recognized as one of the world's leading masters of the art—and one of the pioneers of the marriage of origami with mathematics and science. Lang authored or coauthored thirteen books and lectures widely on origami and its applications.

Meher McArthur is a freelance Asian art curator, author, and educator. Her publications include Reading Buddhist Art: An Illustrated Guide to Buddhist Signs and Symbols; The Arts of Asia: Materials, Techniques, Styles; An ABC of What Art Can Be; and Confucius: A Throneless King. We need more such books

I have had this book since mid-May although in Amazon here, it says not available so I have plenty of time to go through it.

This book is not on how to fold. The articles inside touches on the history and evolution of origami illustrated most beautifully. While it may not be possible to cover all the influential figures which contributed to the progress of origami, I was a bit disappointed that some were not mentioned, even the important ones were not discussed more, nevertheless they make excellent reads.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about origami, not just on instructions on how to fold.

This book is so full of inspiration, I don't know where to begin. I was fortunate enough to actually see the subjects of the book, and they were uniformly marvelous! All kinds of paper folding are represented in the book, and the photographs actually do the pieces justice. The text is informative as well.

One who is supposed to be a warrior considers it his foremost concern to keep death in mind at all times, every day and every night, from the morning of New Year's Day through the night of New Year's Eve.

As long as you keep death in mind at all times, you will also fulfill the ways of loyalty and familial duty. You will also avoid myriad evils and calamities, you will be physically sound and healthy, and you will live a long life. What is more, your character will improve and your virtue will grow.

Here are the reasons for that. All human life is likened to evening dew and morning frost, considered something quite fragile and ephemeral. While this is so of all people's lives, the life of the warrior is particularly precarious.

If people comfort their minds with the assumption that they will live a long time, something might happen, because they think they will have forever to do their work and look after their parents-they may fail to perform for their employers and also treat their parents thoughtlessly.

But if you realize that the life that is here today is not certain on the morrow, then when you take your orders from your employer, and when you look in on your parents, you will have the sense that this may be the last time-so you cannot fail to become truly attentive to your employer and your parents. This is why I say you also fulfill the paths of loyalty and familial duty when you keep death in mind.

In any case, when you forget death and become inattentive, you are not circumspect about things. You may say something offensive to someone and get into an argument. You may challenge something you might as well have ignored, and get into a quarrel.

informative and delightful

Wonderful read, and unlike such weightier classics as THE ART OF WAR or THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS, this one is readily accessible to the western mind.

After reading it twice, I came to think that everything after the first chapter -- nay, after the first two paragraphs -- was mere repetition. This is because all the behaviors and philosophies the author recommends would be the natural consequence if one truly were to "keep death in mind at every possible moment."

The book is a series of short chapters like "Loyalty," "Finances," "Personal Appearance;" each describing the ideal behavior of an ideal samurai with respect to each.

I can't comment on the organization or skill of Cleary's translation, though, since I know of no other version of this book. However I am inclined to think it is adept, since the nature of the work suggests the original Japanese would be extremely stiff. This is not the case with the English.

Gripes:

1. Note that this is a thin book; you can read it in about an hour. I was expecting something much thicker, at least the size of THE UNFETTERED MIND, say.

2. Oscar Ratti's illustrations will be disappointing to those familiar with his work in SECRETS OF THE SAMURAI and AIKIDO: THE DYNAMIC SPHERE. There are only a handful of them, and that handful isn't very interesting.

3. The binding of this book came apart rather quickly, after just the first read. Perhaps just my copy, though.

4. Sadly, the introduction by Cleary is completely forgettable.

About the Author
Ilya Somin is a Professor at George Mason University School of Law. He is the author of The Grasping Hand: Kelo v. City of New London and the Limits of Eminent Domain (2015), and coauthor of A Conspiracy Against Obamacare: The Volokh Conspiracy and the Health Care Case (2013). Somin's work has appeared in a variety of academic journals and popular media, including the Yale Law Journal, Stanford Law Review, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. He writes regularly for the Volokh Conspiracy blog at the Washington Post.

Read with an open mind, and you will be swayed

As a pragmatist with no ideological biases, who hails from a country (India) that has had a statist, planned economy for 57 years (out of 68 years of independence), I can say for certain that this book strikes at the core of our experiences with big government. It is ironic that as India and other countries that experimented with socialism shed their socialist past and move full-speed ahead towards a market economy, in the West, the opposite is happening. The ideology of capitalism is losing favour with the younger generations, and the very thing that makes the West great is at risk of being eroded.

The book provides a very strong, factual argument in favour of small government, which would sway even the most ideologically driven individuals. Professor Somin also provides solutions, with which you can agree or disagree, on the current predicaments, especially to the problem of voter ignorance.

Overall, a very highly recommended read.

Important reminder that facts matter

We are increasingly told that we live in a "post-factual" society, where ideology and populism trump reality. This poignant book drives home the point that voters do not have the information we may think they do. While I do not agree with all of Professor Somin's solutions to the problems of political ignorance, I agree that it's a significant problem that's unlikely to be solved anytime soon. The book is well argued and well written.

This book is an important analysis of contemporary American society, government and politics. So long as Americans fail to keep tabs on their government, the government will expand despite its failures, ineptitude, and corruption. To save us from ourselves, government must be limited so it cannot fill the vacuum left by an inattentive electorate.

"JEET KUNE DO: Bruce Lee's Commentaries on the Martial Way" is THE definitive book on Bruce Lee's martial art. John Little has done a superlative job of locating, formatting, editing and presenting Bruce Lee's writings in a manner that is comprehensible, informative and inspiring. In many ways this book far surpasses "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do" which, in comparison, looks to be so many of Bruce's notes simply tossed into a stew. This book presents Bruce Lee's writings and sketches on his art of Jeet Kune Do in an organized and comprehensive manner -- much like Bruce Lee presented it himself when he created his art in 1967. This book is, quite simply, the best book on Jeet Kune Do ever written. But then, that shouldn't be suprising -- it was written by Bruce Lee.

Finally a book that are Bruce Lee's own words and thoughts on JKD. Nothing filtered here. It is FAR SUPERIOR to the TAO. Although the TAO makes a great complement to this for the more serious student. It's one incredible book and by far one of my favorites I own. I HIGHLY RECOMEND this book to anyone involved in the fighting arts regardless of style. This shows what a true genius and how far ahead of his time he was.

About the Author
Samuel E. Martin received his undergraduate and masterÆs degree in Oriental languages from the University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. in linguistics from Yale University. At Yale he has served as chairman of the Department of East and South Asian Languages and Literatures, and the Department of Linguistics. He is the author of numerous books and papers on Japanese and Korean, including the definitive A Reference Grammar of Japanese and A Reference Grammar of Korean.

This book is wholeheartedly recommended for beginners and short-term travellers. Beyond that, however, this book just isn't enough. I brought this book with me to Japan, and while I never left home without it until it was replaced, it proved all too limited. The word selection is eclectic but restricted (e.g. it has "subactue myelo-optico neuropathy", but neither "oak" nor "saxophone"). Additionally, the book itself is not suited for the long term: after two months of everyday use, the binding fell apart and the cover began to peel. All the entries are in roman characters, which further restricts its usage to native English speakers who have not learned their hiragana and katakana (so forget about handing this book to your new, inebriated Japanese friends). Nonetheless, the size is just about right for portability, and you won't ruin your eyes by trying to read a small font or your back by carrying a thirty pound hardcover. All in all, think about what it is you need before you buy this book. It could fit the bill, but it might not.

Good for true beginners

I bought this dictionary before going to Japan, but I now find it to be too basic. There are lots of entries on different verb forms, so if you don't know the plain form it can be very helpful. But as you get better, you'll probably find that there aren't enough sophisticated words. Good for looking up colloquial words, but not a good choice for anyone but beginner level.

Not Enough Words!!

I lived in Japan for 5 years and bought this to help teach Japanese students English (to look up words they had a problem understanding) - Very frequently it did not have the words I was looking for - ended up buying a different dictionary - there are others out there!
