About the Author
Andrew Dewar was born in Toronto, Ontario, and graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (B.A. Journalism) and University of Toronto (M.A. Japanese Studies, Library and Information Science) before moving to Japan in 1988. After completing his doctoral studies in library science at Keio University, he joined the faculty of a junior college in Japan. Soon after arriving in Japan he rediscovered his childhood love of designing and flying paper airplanes. His passion for paper airplanes led him to become president of the Fukushima Paper Airplane Club. Dewar has published over 30 paper crafting books and kits. He also teaches paper airplane workshops and does seminars at schools, libraries, community centers and museums. He lived and taught library science in Fukushima, Japan, until the giant earthquake and nuclear accident in March 2011, when the city became unsafe. After a brief stay in Canada, he's returned with his family to Gifu, Japan.

Thought I was folding "just" paper airplanes, but got so much more out of it.

Armed with my copy of Andrew Dewar's One Minute Paper Airplanes, I headed over to my long time buddies place to meet her two sons. I hadn't seen her in a long time and so when she told me they were now 8 and 9 respectively, I thought to myself damn how time flies. I figured this kit would be a good peace offering for not keeping in touch for so long and to entertain the kids (as well as myself) while my friend, her husband and I got some lunch and caught up on things.
As soon as I walked in the door w/ the kit in hand, the two kids, Bradley and Daniel's faces lit up and their eyes grew big...."oooooh what is that Uncle?!" So what I thought was going to be a nice casual lunch with my buddy and I while the kids kept themselves occupied with the kit, became a lunch slash airplane making session with all of us. It was actually a really cool kit. The designs were well made and the kids had a lot of favorites like the Wasp and what looked like a flying stingray. I think it was called a flying wing. We had a good time putting them together, it was really easy for the both of us to construct. The best part was that you can actually fly them once you've completed them.
Great product for those who are either interested in airplanes or those with kids and want to do a family project together that involved being outside and away from video games and iPads!

So much fun for both grown-ups and kids!

I gave this kit to my 8-year-old nephew and he loved it! His grown-up uncle, who is a paper airplane enthusiast was also very impressed with this kit and said that all the planes were super easy to follow the directions and build. They fly pretty good as well. Each plane may take a minute to build (after a bit of getting used to), but it's not just 12 minutes total of fun. After building them you'd enjoy flying them over and over.

They look good and fly so far!

This book and kit includes a book which has a good amount of information about making and launching paper airplanes, how to trouble shoot to get them to fly well and a bit about the dynamics of gliding flight in a fun way.
The include planes are printed in bright, smooth color on lightweight card stock, and can be popped out easily. They are not pre-scored, so you'll have to fold them yourself. Following the instructions in the book it's very easy. The book recommends using a ruler to fold, and I used a thin metal ruler and it made the straight folds. After doing the folds, I burnished them with a craft stick for very sharp folds, some parts are multilayered. There was an issue on the punch out of one of them where not all of the little V shaped areas to create the launching groove were punched, but a quick nip with small scissors fixed that. You can use either a stapler or glue to assemble them, but they are designed to be assembled using a stapler. Little lines indicate where the staples go.
The planes are all different shapes and themes. Some are very simple, some are a bit more complicated and might take longer than a minute to make. The big fun is in launching them. All the planes are designed to be launched using a rubber band launcher. You give the plane a light test throw which won't send it more than 10 feet to see if you need to adjust anything- tips in the book tell you how to adjust for drag and various other issues. After you have it ready, take it somewhere you have room and let it fly with the launcher!
So it's a bit of education, and a lot of fun. You get to make the planes, and some people will be inspired to design their own after trying the planes in the book. Then you get to launch them and see how far the different models fly and how well they fly.
My son and I had a lot of fun making and launching planes. It's a fun paper craft kit, the planes are well-designed for flight and appearance with a bold graphic appeal.
